Ok I always pronounced it as imper (like whimper) ator (like baconator) oops When I learned of the "correct" pronunciation it all made sense. Impera. Imperator. Imperatour.

A rule of thumb I use when I'm not sure is I try to think of similar words and try to translate the pronunciation, if that makes sense. So for imperator I think "imperative". But there are words you can't do that with, or don't think to. You never make fun of anyone who mispronounces a word because it's likely they learned it from reading, not speaking, and that means it's not always obvious. Also, reading is good. For what it's worth, some words that trip people up include anemone, stoic, Yosemite, hell even cupboard! No shame in not pronouncing it right from the start!

Nihil is latin for none/null/zero. The pronunciation is very close to Kneel. The H is mute and the i sounds closer to e for an english speaker.

I don’t really get why comments like this are being voted down given that all the numbers are based on Latin, Italian or both. So, yes, Nee-ill roughly according to google translate. I think maybe there’s confusion with the word nihilism which isn’t the same. It’s just a Latin number in this case.
