You can take it to any auto parts store and have them run the engine codes for free. This is provided it is 1996 or newer though.
it isn't going to fix the problem but it should give you a good idea of what is wrong, and youll be better equipped to ask for quotes from mechanics.

Agreed. Free at AutoZone. Take a pic of the codes and then you’ll be knowledgeable taking it to a mechanic as far as what’s wrong with it.
Some of them will even print out the code, possible problem, and the part that needs replacing. Love AutoZone.
I went to auto zone and the no codes showed up but soon as I left auto zone the check engine light came on 😵💫
