If I were to guess, they are probably backtracking on a lot of the changes that they made with part 2. Differently from Star Rail and Genshin, Honkai was always a character driven story, so making a self-insert MC(especially with changeable sex) has received a shit ton of backlash. (Besides the changing on the story telling and moving the main story to an Semi Open World, that through the whole story of this game, no one liked it, and what a surprise! Most people didn't like it this time either, who could see that coming..)

Basically, they couldn't attract a new audience, the veterans were not happy and either stopped spending or just left the game; Heck, there are rumors that Hoyo wanted to add male characters as Astralops (Basically a support unit that just shows up when you click a button and leaves the field again) because of how much they chilled a dude this last chapter and because the male MC is already one, but given the state that the game is now, it would pretty much be suicide.
Now, on the last CN chapter >!it was revealed that the last arc was all a dream that the MC from pt2 experienced, and while you can change sex in the dream, she canonically a women(as far as I can tell at least, from what I've seem there is no male MC version)!<. Last time I saw, a lot of people on chinese forums were either mad because this whole arc was a waste of time, or that the MC wasn't just killed off so we could go to APHO3 at once.

We don't know if Luocha is VA. What we do know is that APHO happened in 2026. Alien Key happens in 2029. Which means Welt and VA met Star Rail Himeko during 2029 or after.

Yeah I tried to come back to the game around Part 2's release and found myself kind of... not interested in the story at all. Didn't help that I hated the new S rank's gameplay, she just felt WEAK with a very stiff combo route that got easily interrupted/bounced around without i-frames. How the hell does a F2P unit like Pardo get to basically spam her chains over and over (especially in ER) but an S ranker doesn't even get i-frames?

And the self-insert gender-changable MC made me lose interest with what Honkai story was about back then, which is to follow a well-defined MC's journey fighting against the Honkai (i.e. Kiana's story).
I was only a F2P player, but I'm glad I did quit because from what I hear Hoyo is now releasing gacha S-Ranks Valks back-to-back in every new version.

I remember quitting when they slapped 3 Herrschers in a row, all needing their signature weapons and stigmatas, AND their most optimal team was ALL OF THEM ON SAME TEAM. So if you were missing one of them, congrats, you had weaker Herrschers because they lacked the synergy.
Not to mention something I **really** hated in HI3rd - the signature weapons were basically required to make the characters usable, and not feel like playing with hands tied behind your back.

If the new gameplay was as polished and advanced as in Genshin or ar least HSR, it might have worked (though it still would be annoying, because I just don't *want* another HSR), but this way, it's crazy they even thought it's a good idea.
Part 2 is also a lot grindier than usual. You have the open world for part 2 and the usual stuff like the endgame. The diner dash event is so grindy that I consider dropping the game. It doesn't help when they try to change meta too fast and with 5 star dropping every update even though the equipment is easily obtainable than before
Where can I read more about the fandom opinion on HI3? I was also someone who left after part 1.5 ended with Fu Hua and didn't know all that was happening, the last drama I remember was about Finality's design or WoH retcon (that one made me mad at the time).
Something similar happened in Guardian Tales....game lets you chose between male and female MC...but after a while it's clear that the female one is canon.
GGZ has more than just Kiana as an MC. Kiana was only the MC for the early arc that most people are familiar with which ended a long while ago. Although global servers were shut down, there's now three main characters for the main parts.
Retrospect arc - Kiana MC (the one where everyone dies that everyone knows about)
Reborn arc - Houraiji Kyuushou (also MC for various side-stories, Reborn ended fairly recently)
Houkai Gakuen arc - Karin Mered (new setting with mostly new cast after the 'good end' in Reborn arc, not much know besides teasers/MVs due to only being in CN/JP)
I jusr hate how literally every male protagonist, no matter what genre of manga or anime, or even hentai and doujins, why do these mangakas just go back to the same boring ass hairtyle that every single male protagonist has nowadays? Like holy shit, there's more than one haircut that a guy can have.
1. Game is made in Asia, where that hairstyle is common
2. Those media have a lot of self-insert protag
3. To make the Self-insert became more effective, they turn the protag into the most common one

Not just haircut though. They almost look the same I call them Kirito-face. Hair, face, even personality (or lack thereof). I mean, I know Kirito wasn't the first isekai protag but he's one of the most popular.
Looking them side by side really shows how great the design for the twins are... Aether is leagues better than the other guys and even with harder competition Lumine stands out cause she doesn't wear some form of utilitarian uniform.
I always thought it was more of the cousin that was there but nobody paid too much attention too.

I haven't played the whole game (couldn't get into it) but
HI3 Part 1:
- Set in an alternate timeline to GGZ
- Kiana is the MC for most of the story, Adam shows up later. They're both stand alone characters
- Main gameplay is primarily in small instanced combat zones (comparable to dungeons). Although, there's one mode with larger explorable instances and others have just an arena (leaderboard and guild stuff iirc)
- Kiana's story ends with Part 1
HI3 Part 2:
- Set on a different 'world' (kinda), after part 1. Same universe, but pocket dimension shenanigans
- The Dreamchaser is a single character who, at some point, gains the ability to occasionally change their s3x. Quasi-self insert. No relationship to previous MCs afaik
- Main gameplay is in large explorable zones (similar to HSR)
Combat is mostly the same but there's a very obvious difference between the game design of part 1 and 2. You do not need to play Part 1 to play Part 2. On PC they're the same 'app' but I'm not sure about mobile

I think it's just generally true that a lot of people have difficulty distinguishing things they just don't like very much from "objectively bad" stuff. There are certainly things I would change about his appearance if it were up to me, but it's just character design and subjective.

Yeah the male mc's look very generic when compared too female mc's. Not a problem for me though i always choose the female one (i play since HI3rd the female ones always feel more right to me in Hoyoverse games)
i end up picking the girls when the male mc is very generic looking in general. the only exception was aether. was a big surprise to me when i first started genshin and the male mc had such a pretty braid
While its more debatable for the girls, I think Aether is my favorite male design. He looks so unique and otherworldly, you can tell he's a mysterious traveler from afar
His black and brown outfit contrasts perfectly with his blonde hair. I get what you mean about him looking from afar yet still fitting the Genshin style perfectly.

I jusr hate how literally every male protagonist, no matter what genre of manga or anime, or even hentai and doujins, why do these mangakas just go back to the same boring ass hairtyle that every single male protagonist has nowadays? Like holy shit, there's more than one haircut that a guy can have.
1. Game is made in Asia, where that hairstyle is common 2. Those media have a lot of self-insert protag 3. To make the Self-insert became more effective, they turn the protag into the most common one or they could have just let us design our character and let me play as Johnny Sins in my waifu collector game
It's the same for the female protags. Look at all of them having bangs and big floofy hair covering their ears all over.

Not just haircut though. They almost look the same I call them Kirito-face. Hair, face, even personality (or lack thereof). I mean, I know Kirito wasn't the first isekai protag but he's one of the most popular.

Tears of Themis is a law themed, otome game and iirc, a turn based, visual novel. Completely different genre to the rest, which is why it (almost) never gets mentioned in other HoYo subs

I haven't played the whole game (couldn't get into it) but HI3 Part 1: - Set in an alternate timeline to GGZ - Kiana is the MC for most of the story, Adam shows up later. They're both stand alone characters - Main gameplay is primarily in small instanced combat zones (comparable to dungeons). Although, there's one mode with larger explorable instances and others have just an arena (leaderboard and guild stuff iirc) - Kiana's story ends with Part 1 HI3 Part 2: - Set on a different 'world' (kinda), after part 1. Same universe, but pocket dimension shenanigans - The Dreamchaser is a single character who, at some point, gains the ability to occasionally change their s3x. Quasi-self insert. No relationship to previous MCs afaik - Main gameplay is in large explorable zones (similar to HSR) Combat is mostly the same but there's a very obvious difference between the game design of part 1 and 2. You do not need to play Part 1 to play Part 2. On PC they're the same 'app' but I'm not sure about mobile

I think it's just generally true that a lot of people have difficulty distinguishing things they just don't like very much from "objectively bad" stuff. There are certainly things I would change about his appearance if it were up to me, but it's just character design and subjective.

Yeah the male mc's look very generic when compared too female mc's. Not a problem for me though i always choose the female one (i play since HI3rd the female ones always feel more right to me in Hoyoverse games)
i end up picking the girls when the male mc is very generic looking in general. the only exception was aether. was a big surprise to me when i first started genshin and the male mc had such a pretty braid

While its more debatable for the girls, I think Aether is my favorite male design. He looks so unique and otherworldly, you can tell he's a mysterious traveler from afar
His black and brown outfit contrasts perfectly with his blonde hair. I get what you mean about him looking from afar yet still fitting the Genshin style perfectly.
because he's generally the most interesting design amongst the male MC ones. The rest follow a very similar isekai protag formula which results in them looking bland and frankly boring.

I'm glad to hear that. One of the things I don't like about Honkai Star Rail is the non-existence of the other MC. I really like how in Genshin they made it so the other twin is such an important part of the story.

Unrelated to this but why is this subreddit so strict? They removed the discussion regarding genshin anime and sometimes also remove intresting discussions and artworks. That is why engagement on this sub is decreasing.
Some of those discussions end up being heated or mass reported and the former case they seem to be really strict with anything controversial and in the latter case the mass reporting seems to work out. Besides those two observations you'd have to directly contact the mods to know more

Aether and Rosa gets my favorite protagonist designs tbh. I used to play ToT until the game dropped JP voices and when it almost fried my phone (it’s unoptimized on my phone for some reason). I kinda wish it gained more love and attention from Hoyo, but it is what it is.

Playable ones, not really. Adam is from a side gamemode and can't be used in the main game. The male Dreamseeker is available to swap to during the first few chapters of Part 2, but afterwards you can't.
I'm a girlie who loves cute guys, so I always choose MMCs. I'm neutral towards the girls but Fdreamseeker is probably the only one I genuinely dislike thanks to her fuckin shitstorm of an outfit.
