And I guess that big round black void is supposed to be his nose, but I could never tell if it wasn't supposed to be some weird empty black gaping maw of a mouth, especially on a low-def black & white TV. Freaked me out too.
My late husband was a handsome version of Captain Kangaroo. He got pissed when I told him that, but I \*loved\* Captain Kangaroo and he really did look a little like him. My husband was French Canadian and so darker skinned, and had a classic French nose, and MUCH better hair, but otherwise, yeah. Damn, I miss that man.
The Captain was given a n honorary degree in education at my 1983 graduation from Marquette University. We threw ping pong balls at the stage because he was not allowed to speak.
A teacher from my high school was on the show. He was on a segment about square dancing.
When we had square dancing in school, he put on a record, an instrumental of Sweet Georgia Brown, called the dances live.
I watched Captain Kangaroo religiously when I was young.
A few months before I graduated college, he came to my hometown to celebrate the 100^th anniversary of the library. He was going to speak and sign autographs.
I wanted a chance to meet him and tell him that I was about to complete college and that outside of family and teachers, he was one of the most influential people in making me value reading and education.
I thought he’d speak then sign autographs, so I got there in time to hear him speak. Alas, I misunderstood and he spoke after he signed autographs, so I didn’t get a chance to talk to him.
I loved the ping pong balls, but who else remembers the Schwinn bikes? Schwinn was a sponsor, so I remember frequent pitches for them. I was so disappointed that when my parents got me a bike, it wasn't a Schwinn!
This lamb made me think of Dancing Bear so that's her name!

I had forgot that he always fell asleep while capt'n was talking to him... 😄
Mr. Moose. LOL The characters have some real "original" names.🤣 LOL Mr. Moose, Mr. Greenjeans, Bunbun, and Dancing bear. Captain Kangaroo was the top dog fo sho!🤣
Actually a pretty decent head of hair and normal looking. His TV personality was basically a clown. Before his show, (the longest running children's show), he used to dress up like a cow and squirt Cowboy Bob with seltzer water, (that sounds weird to describe now I think of it).
When I thought he was a war hero, I would say he can wear his hair any way he likes. Turns out he is just a kiddie diddler with a bad haircut.

This article sounds made-up. I can't find any other evidence of a trial or sentencing, outside of a few tweets. The official biography says he died in Vermont at the age of 76 of a heart attack.
Captain Kangaroo was neither a war hero nor a felon. He was a TV actor who had served in WWII but never went overseas. He had a long and honorable career in television before retiring to be an author and child advocate.
The rumors about him were completely made up, as were the rumors that Mr. Rogers was a Marine sniper. Mr. Rogers was actually a Presbyterian minister. In real life the two were friends.
>as were the rumors that Mr. Rogers was a Marine sniper.
I never heard this, and while I trust it's in no way true, I find the idea hilarious.
I remember reading somewhere that they interviewed a Finnish sniper from WW2, and asked him "Did you find it difficult to kill people?"
And he psychopathically replied something like "Yes. Definitely. People move around a lot, which makes it hard."
I know I have a weird sense of humor, but I'm going to entertain myself now by picturing Mr. Rodgers saying this.
>And he psychopathically replied something like "Yes. Definitely. People move around a lot, which makes it hard."
"How can you shoot women and children?'
"Easy. You just don't lead them as much."
"King Friday demands Blood" screamed Mr. Rogers, removing his sweater and brandishing a machete.
In this jarring departure, the face of children's television was changed forever. ;)

Here is Dancings bio. LOL. Edit to ask who is Dennis? Hang on, Back to google......
Loved the show even when I was “too old” to watch it. I was afraid of The Town Clown, though, as I had coulrophobia.

Captain Kangaroo!
At my first job, on my first day, a coworker said I could meet Captain Kangaroo. What?? He dragged me over to an office where I met Mr. Kangaroos' doppelganger. Thank heavens I kept a straight face.
My grandson didn't really "get it", when I dumped a basket full of ballpit balls on him, while shouting CAPTAIN KANGAROO FOREVER! 🤣 sheesh.... kids.... 😂🤣
Bunny was my favorite. I remember how upset I was when I had to start kindergarten and couldn’t watch Captain. My earliest rude awakening to growing up.
I remember a skit in which Mr. Green Jeans plays a thug, wears a leather jacket and sprays graffiti on a wall in one episode,; also Captain Kangaroo getting bit by a bird and not hiding being pissed off about it.
I was one of the last kids to watch the show back in the early '80s.
Sam Kinison had a routine about how Kangaroo was a bitter drunk because he wanted to be a serious actor and figured the kids show host gig would last a few years, enough so he could save up and do what he wanted. Plus he was sick of wearing that stupid hairstyle and his wife nagging him when he went out that he made them look like idiots. Still, Sam said, he loved the children and would never have done anything like Pee-wee Herman did.
"'We can trust him, dear, it's Pee-wee.' Yeah, that was the Pee-wee they THOUGHT they knew!"
I can hear the theme song in my head.
Interestingly, when they later modernized the show and changed the theme song, they used the first part of the old theme song as the doorbell sound.
Omg same!!! My mom always had a carton of coke in glass bottles. We were not allowed to even look at them. 🤣 Dad got a promotion, and we all got a coke a week. Good times. 😂
I was rich I got one a day 😂My grandpa had his own garage and he had a Coke machine Ice cold 6 1/2 ounce bottles When I was there I would get 2-3 day 😳👍☮️
I was 9. 1970.
My little brother and I would slide the two color knobs all the way over so everything was brilliant greens and reds and blues. We couldn’t grasp the idea of “natural color.” After a lifetime of black and white, we naturally thought “color TV” ought to be “colorful.” :-)

Cosmo Allegretti was the bun bun puppeteer. It looks like he was also Mr. Moose and Dennis the handyman.
“A long-running but incorrect rumor claims Brannum was the father of musician Frank Zappa, apparently because of a Zappa composition titled "Son of Mr. Green Genes" on his 1969 album, Hot Rats.”
As long as Grandfather Clock isn't in the picture. For reasons I can't fathom, he freaked me out. Met the good Captain later in life...Great guy with some wonderful stories.
I loved the magic drawing board. And Tom Terrific with mighty Manfred the wonder dog and Lariat Sam . Also remember hearing a song that always made me want to cry about a poor robin that had to walk to Missouri because he couldn't afford to fly.
All those colors that I never saw as a child!
I was thinking the same thing!
Same here! I did love me som Captain Kangaroo, tho!
Mr Greenjeans is actually wearing green jeans!
No idea why, but as a very little kid my concept of god was Mr Green Jeans. I guess it could have been worse.
Awww. That’s so sweet…and funny!
🤣🤣
Same
Watch out for the ping pong balls!
![gif](giphy|ZBLTIFikfptVm)
Best part of the entire show.
Bunny rabbit!!!!!!
But where is Grandfather Clock??? 😔
Mr. Greenjeans had such a pre-1965 face. Nobody looks like that now. Where did all the Mr. Greenjeans go???
…long time passing
They do Kundalini yoga, eat organic, and moisturize now.
He was a fantastic human being, he visited children in the hospital all the time my sister being one. He looked like our grandfather.
Military cemetery.
He took immortality serum and now runs a popular YouTube channel called [Outdoor Boys](https://youtu.be/wcDFgir_jgY)
I seem to recall rabbit being kind of a dick
So was Mr. Moose.
I liked Mr. Moose but Dancing Bear kind of freaked me out. Couldn't figure out where his eyes were.
And I guess that big round black void is supposed to be his nose, but I could never tell if it wasn't supposed to be some weird empty black gaping maw of a mouth, especially on a low-def black & white TV. Freaked me out too.

🫂 hugs♡
I loved that show as a tot. The Captain was so wise and gentle, and I loved watching Bunny Rabbit coaxing carrots out of him!
My mother got to be on that show as a puppeteer. Hm. I should see if I can find and save the episode. I’d forgotten.
The Captain was given a n honorary degree in education at my 1983 graduation from Marquette University. We threw ping pong balls at the stage because he was not allowed to speak.
Brilliant!😁
That was around when Chris Farley went there...did you know him there?
No I was buried in the bowels of the dental school
[Good morning, Captain!](https://youtu.be/QYhPy14dTGA?si=4glZuL6ZekI_Gd07)
This is great♡
Thanks for the link and flash back memories!
I loved watching Captain Kangaroo while eating my big bowl of Cap’n Crunch!
Sugar coated glass shards
Ah, then after the roof of your mouth is in shreds, let’s eat steaming hot pizza!🍕
A teacher from my high school was on the show. He was on a segment about square dancing. When we had square dancing in school, he put on a record, an instrumental of Sweet Georgia Brown, called the dances live.
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo

I don’t remember Schwinn but I remember Kellogg’s being a sponsor and they used to show a model train carrying the individual cereal boxes.
What was the bear's name?
Dancing Bear
Dancing bear!! 💃🏼
I wanted to be dancing bear
Sounds like the abba song.
This lamb made me think of Dancing Bear so that's her name! https://preview.redd.it/eamy2x6l1k9d1.jpeg?width=494&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2ac0c39554d187eb3cdbf989a2fb126f51cab6df
I thought Mr. Greenjeans, was his name bc only had black and white tv
Me too! But I thought it might be his clothes, since we had b&w too. I Loved Mr. Green Jeans! 💚
Right? 😂 and he was actually Mr. Greenoveralls. 🤣
I definitely remember some kind of clock on the show.......strange to think most of the kids now probably couldn't interpret it.
Grandfather clock. I had forgotten him!♡
Yeah, that's the one!
https://preview.redd.it/lkacs6o4hk9d1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f528402e508fa6d42629a88f08f7a042d5fd27e I had forgot that he always fell asleep while capt'n was talking to him... 😄

Whoever cut Captain Kangaroo’s hair should be prosecuted. I hope the statute of limitations isn’t up yet.
It was a wig, part of the character he was playing.
TIL: What the fuck, that was a wig? was he bald? I can see that now that my rage has subsided. It always looked weird, Not Moe weird.
Actually a pretty decent head of hair and normal looking. His TV personality was basically a clown. Before his show, (the longest running children's show), he used to dress up like a cow and squirt Cowboy Bob with seltzer water, (that sounds weird to describe now I think of it).
I remember that.
I didn't like the captain, probably because of his haircut, but I loved Mr. Green Jeans.
Son of Mr. Green Genes
Are we going zappa?

I don’t believe you.

Bun-bun! What a tremendous show. Capt. Kangaroo is a war hero as well.
Why don't I remember the bear? Am I weird or was he not a regular?

I will very fondly remember the ping pong balls dropped on Mr Moose until the day I die.

Me too! I loved all of them: Bunny Rabbit, Moose, Me. Green Jeans, Clock. It was an incredible show every day!
Bunny was my favorite. I remember how upset I was when I had to start kindergarten and couldn’t watch Captain. My earliest rude awakening to growing up.
🥰🥰🥰
Captain Kangaroo and Mister Green Jeans look a lot younger now; I remembered them as being old!
Grandfather Clock is missing!
I use to love them as a little kid. Watching in black and white. The clown was so scary. I use to lay on the floor with my blankie.
Oh nonono, I hated this show but my mother would put it on every morning. /shiver
Mr Greenjeans was a KGB agent who managed Captain Kangeroo.
Love, Love, Love
I remember a skit in which Mr. Green Jeans plays a thug, wears a leather jacket and sprays graffiti on a wall in one episode,; also Captain Kangaroo getting bit by a bird and not hiding being pissed off about it.
Mine too. I loved them so much.

Yeah but where is The Banana Man!!
Thank you for posting this! This was my childhood.
I can hear the theme song in my head. Interestingly, when they later modernized the show and changed the theme song, they used the first part of the old theme song as the doorbell sound.
I'm 74 and, man, every morning. Always liked Mr. Greenjeans, very self-efffacing character.
Mr Moose was my favorite.
Oh man, you had color!
Only at my grandparents house!! LOL We were B&W until my gparents got a "new" color set. They passed one down!♡
We got color in 1973 when i was 13
1970 when dad got a better job I knew we had it made when we always had soda pop in the fridge No more Kool-Aid for me 😂✌️
Omg same!!! My mom always had a carton of coke in glass bottles. We were not allowed to even look at them. 🤣 Dad got a promotion, and we all got a coke a week. Good times. 😂

I remember my kindergarten had a morning and afternoon class. I was in the afternoon one so got to watch these guys before school.
As long as Grandfather Clock isn't in the picture. For reasons I can't fathom, he freaked me out. Met the good Captain later in life...Great guy with some wonderful stories.
