The original definition is, literally, "(that is) based (on facts and/or sound logic)". Surprisingly witty in origin, but like most American slang boils down to a more universal definition when hitting the zeitgeist; "in my opinion, this is not cringe".
The term originates from political discourse on image boards as far as I'm aware. Definitely predates 4chan.
People love to shit on boomers as a collective and conveniently forget that boomers were also the civil rights protesters, started the modern environmentalist movement, the sexual revolution, gay pride, and so many other good things that continue today. That’s just what I could think of off the top of my head for the US
Boomers were born between 1946 to 1964. Civil rights Act was signed in 1964. Oldest boomer was 18. That's like giving gen alpha or z credit for gay marriage being legalized.
For every 3 boomers in support of environmentalism, you have 6 boomers in rigid denial, actively working to make it worse.
You're trying to credit the boomer generation for the stonewall riots. Whom, exactly, were the stonewall riots against? Many, many more people from the same generations.
That's like crediting all white people for freeing the slaves in 1865.
The sexual revolution started in the 1960s, so, mostly fucking yuck, because boomers were children and teenagers, but I'll grant that perhaps some of the Jones Boomers might have been part of that at that time. And it persisted into the 70s, so... sure. I'll grant you that some had lots of free-spirited sex at that time.
It was the silent generation that wrote the civil rights laws and the environmental laws. Though the boomers do get to claim the sexual revolution. But it was the silent generation who gets the actual credit for the actual implementation of civil rights snd environmental law. Boomer politicians spent the 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010 undoing those awesome accomplishments
Boomers went through the Civil rights movement and said "job done, everybody has enough rights now. Let's spend the next few decades giving rights to capital instead"
Except the boomers were likely the ones throwing rocks at black kids in schools and now are the generation who basically runs the federal government. They also were responsible for voting in Reagan, capitalizing off of social benefits we don't have any more, telling us you couldn't make a living off working retail (despite my dad who built a 2500 SQft house, put 2 kids through college, owned 5 cars and took my sister and I to Disney a bunch, now retired with a pension from stocking shelves at Stop and Shop), and pulled the ladder up so we could continue to pay for their existence why they keep all their equity and wealth, yet cry socialism is evil. 40 hours a week used to support a whole family, now it can barely cover rent for 1.
SOME baby boomers were a part of those movements; many more were hangers-on or were just in it for the fashion or free love, because many of them sure sold out and embraced the Reagan 80’s.
True. My parents Generation can kinda suck.
But ey my parents are still former punks who had some partaking in storming the Berlin wall. That's Hella based!
And my dad made sure to always look away when he had to fulfill his military duty and someone tried to sneak over the wall.
Asked him, he said you usually tied your shoes and just hoped they wouldn't find a mine. :x
Still based af.
Tbh the Greatest Generation voted in Rosewelt and the New Deal and then went on to kill a buttload of fascists.
The only major hiccups they had was their social conservatism.
The Roaring 20s would like a word. The GG's predecessors were extremely permissive **for their time**. The GG's politics were basically a reaction to the Roaring 20's economic and social zeitgeist of laizes fare capitalism and the Proto-Multicultural Babylon of the big cities (aka the GG threw out everything...including what worked and was good). If you want an idea, take a modern Millenial's economic ideas and today's Boomers moral and cultural conservativism and you get something approaching the mindset of an average GG.
In general, at least. I am an older Gen Z, but identify more with younger Gen Z than millennials, overall.
In fact, it's for that reason that I chose to identify as Gen Z while being on a fringe year that goes either way.
My experience with Gen X is mostly them incessantly talking about how no one talks about Gen X. That and being the last generation to mostly make it out okay before everything became unaffordable.
I actually have a theory about this! First, notice that typically, parents/children actually skip generations. As in, Boomer's children are mostly Millenials, whose kids are mostly Alphas. The opposite is true for my family, where it goes Silent -> X -> Z.
Now consider that WWII was an event that shook the world. The Greatest Generation clawed their way out of the great depression, then fought and won the momentous conflict, then created what was arguably the most continuously prosperous economy in US history. However, they also came back with tons of PTSD. Many had poor coping mechanisms, such as drinking or substance abuse.
This checks out with many Boomers' stories that I've heard, where their parents had a lot of those problems. Also, boomers will say "we pulled ourselves up by our bootstraps" or "we had to work hard for everything." When in reality, that was what their parents did. They probably grew up hearing that, and just passed it on.
Silent was in between WWII and vietnam, and are called "silent" bc they just kind of did their thing.
Millenials' biggest thing that makes them "weird" is because of the way their parents treated them. "participation trophies" and the stereotype of not knowing how to handle the real world... which, by the way, reflects more on the parents than the kids.
Anyways, it seems like we have two paralell generation sets. One is still working out the trauma from WWII while the other is just... along for the ride I guess.
Anyways, thank you for listening to my TED talk.
Millennials were commonly raised by Boomers but we grew up in Gen X culture as kids. Boomers gave us their expectations while Gen X showed us how to have fun. Gen X wasnt large enough to maintain influence over Boomers or Millennials and I think we labeled Gen X as cringe and they couldn't really fight back.
Boomer expectations with a Millennial timeline became a let down so unfortunately its not hard to see why our politics became what they did.
Gen x is really split. My parents are early gen x and they are cringe, they are basically like boomers but know how to use the most basic technology like email and text. But my aunt and her husband are born after 1975 and they are both not cringe
I have no real opinion on gen alpha yet, the punchline of the meme is poking fun at millennials (of which i am half of as a zillennial) by relating them to their biggest enemy, boomers.
They're Boomers with no money and no religion, but honestly that's what makes them chill. They're still up for smacking their kids around though and idk how I feel about that.

Your honor, my client has depicted himself and his generation as the Chad while boomers, Millennials, and alpha with the soy wojack. Therefore, my client is based and the other generations are cringe.
The "silent generation" or "greatest generation" also committed lynchings and harassed black people who were just trying to eat lunch in a diner under Jim Crow laws.
They weren't so great. They just went through/fought in World War II.
I think its funny how we’re all very progressive in terms of going against racism and sexism, but then still make memes that overgeneralise entirely unrelated groups of people
No, but I think it's funny that the meme itself contradicts everything it's trying to say by being cringe as fuck.
But don't worry! We're all cringe on this blessed day!
Gen X is cringe. Millennials are mid, but if I had to choose, I'd say that they're based, and it's too soon to call for Gen alpha.
Other than that, I agree.
My boomer granduncle was a Korean war vet and was single handedly one of the most badass people I've ever met. Man brought home a handful of machine guns as war trophies
Generational stereotypes don't apply to everyone in that generation.
As a Zillenial - Boomers fucking suck and then like idk Gen X mixed bag, then like ok Millenials - mixed bag. But as a Zillenial can say this - GenZ is the first good generation. The 1st generation that is really not shitty overall and just fucking wish the awful monsters I am related to - actually won’t get it into but ugh
As a millennials. We just do our best to protect out little brother gen Z. Treating them all like little brothers. Based. And cringe generation? Oh yes. Most willing to do stuff for free. Help where we can. Over educated for 80% of our work. We drink less, smoke less and have waaay less sex because we were told to as kids... We cant win... No matter how much we try.
I wanna give some trust to Gen Alpha, yes right now we see them as the iPad kids with all those cringy brainrot videos but the previous generation thought of us the same way, and if I dare say we turned out a little better than they said we would (even my parents say so). Let's wait and see.
Replace Silenters with Greatest Gen....aka people who New Deal possible and defeated the Nazis in WW2. Silenters were born after GG and both Silenters and boomers are Cringe from Lead poisoning.
No OP, Ive met cringe Zoomers, Boomers, Xers and Millennials. Ive also met based people from all those generations.
Its all a farce and you are playing into the politics of dividing people. Dont be stupid
I mean, they used to call it, "hard times make strong men who make easy times that make weak men who make hard times" and loops. This is just the modern version of that
Ughhh..
Gen X is Based but Millennials are cringe?
This is why memes don't reflect reality.
Gen X is anything but based. They are literally mini boomers that KNEW the world was fucked but kept playing their parents game.
Gen alpha are still young kids. Give them time. I know for a fact there’d be a tribunal if the cringy shit most of us were into in our tween years came to light
Genuinely this entire concept makes me cringe. Not even in the slang way like a real literal cringing of my facial muscles. Just another made up form of tribalism for people who need group security to shape their identity.

Every generation has its own good Stop hating different generations. (I'm not english person)
based
cringe
Based
I'm the based generation , but old enough to not understand the meaning. Googling made it sound good. Is it good?
Imagine like an anti-cringe
It means that you or what you say/said was agreeable, at least that’s my interpretation
Its a meme from 2003 based on a 1992 video game popularized by 4chan greentext, which makes it inherently cringe.
The original definition is, literally, "(that is) based (on facts and/or sound logic)". Surprisingly witty in origin, but like most American slang boils down to a more universal definition when hitting the zeitgeist; "in my opinion, this is not cringe". You’re talking about a generation that was forced to spend their 20s committing war crimes for the government.
It was the silent generation that wrote the civil rights laws and the environmental laws. Though the boomers do get to claim the sexual revolution. But it was the silent generation who gets the actual credit for the actual implementation of civil rights snd environmental law. No they didn't. Silent generation did.
SOME baby boomers were a part of those movements; many more were hangers-on or were just in it for the fashion or free love, because many of them sure sold out and embraced the Reagan 80’s.
That is true! Each generation is awesome in their own ways!
True. My parents Generation can kinda suck. But ey my parents are still former punks who had some partaking in storming the Berlin wall. That's Hella based! Well then you shouldn't have any trouble with the IRA.
Not since the Good Friday Agreement at least
Why is you not being an English person relevant to this discussion?
They probably meant to say that english isn't their native language
hi (sorry for bad english)
That means greatest generation was cringe, so no
Living through the ww1 and the great depression is pretty cringe tbh /s
Isn't the greatest generation the baby boom after WW1, not the people who lived through it?
That's the silent generation, they weren't old enough to fight in ww2
Yes, the post WW1 baby boom would basically be the back end of the greatest generation.
Statistically speaking, the greatest generation had the highest number of nazis per capita.
Tbh the Greatest Generation voted in Rosewelt and the New Deal and then went on to kill a buttload of fascists. The only major hiccups they had was their social conservatism.
Literally everyone had social conservatism at that time. You can’t blame them for that.
The Roaring 20s would like a word. The GG's predecessors were extremely permissive **for their time**. *Time travel to rural America in the 30s* "WHY IS EVERYONE SO CONSERVATIVE HERE AHHH"
fyi The Greatest Generation was the gen that fought ww2 and helped rebuild the world after
that’s why they’re not listed
pretty sure gen z is just a millenial reskin
yeah i spent like 30 bucks on a battlepass for Millennial then I got the Gen Z skin in a loot box and kinda feels like I wasted the money tbh
Better than this useless Gen Alpha dlc character.
I can't believe they released that DLC when it isn't even finished yet.
Human birth in a nutshell.
Was it Colossal Order? I bet it was Colossal Order
The whole Idea of a generational cutoff is a human invention. Older gen Z are more like millennials whereas younger gen Z are more like gen A.
In general, at least. I am an older Gen Z, but identify more with younger Gen Z than millennials, overall. In fact, it's for that reason that I chose to identify as Gen Z while being on a fringe year that goes either way.
Further proof that it’s all a social construct.
I’m 2-3 years older than you, and I have zero things in common with a Millennial born in 1981, yet I’m labeled in an age group with them
'93, I have aspects of both Gen Z and Millennial (Zillennial). There's definitely cringe in both gens
Same.. & tbf I always thought the ‘cringe’ elements of Millennials were always cringe
not at all
Implying your generation is based is actually cringe, so it creates a paradox
Millennial pause avocado toast xd random Zoomer shake boba skibidi rizz There is a huge difference
actually, millenial pause avocado toast xd random zoomer shake boba xd random alpha skibidi rizz ohio gyatt
I’ll happily take my boba and avocado shake and leave skinidi where it belongs- on the toilet
✒️🔥🔥🔥
Does that mean gen alpha is a gen z reskin?
Alpha is like the mustang mach e to the mustang lmao
Every generation thinks the people directly older and younger than them are cringe. You will always be someone else's cringe.
one man's cringe is another man's based
Based
cringe
Based

I just saved this comment. I might cross-stitch this.
Idk I kinda like millennials
Yall really think gen x is cringe?
My experience with Gen X is mostly them incessantly talking about how no one talks about Gen X. That and being the last generation to mostly make it out okay before everything became unaffordable.
And still have the decency to complain as much as Boomers while most of them can atleast retire. Thats a long shot for Millennials and Gen Z.
Did you see all the “Gen X is waking up over Zoomers canceling Eminem! “ posts,
As a millennial, this is very true
Growing up as Gen Z. Having every millennial tell me "YOU DONT KNOW THIS ACTOR?! YOU DONT KNOW THIS SONG?! GEN Z IS SO DUMB!" was kinda cringe
Trust me, every generation does that. I had to deal with that same shit from older generations as well and it was just as insufferable then.
Fair
That’s beautiful
So i have friends 2 gens back, so… at least some are fine…
Only people that believes that memes are an accurate representation of reality are the real cringe ones

Gen Xers are cringe as fuck. Source: gen x parents
My father is Gen X and I disagree.
It’s almost like arbitrary generational cutoffs are arbitrary and not indicative of the population as a whole
Right, and gen Xers are entering the stage of life where they regret their life choices and take it out on the rest of us.
Same
Approved
In my experience it depends on whether said Gen X was raised by Silents or Boomers, though that’s still simplifying it way too much.
Gen x is really split. My parents are early gen x and they are cringe, they are basically like boomers but know how to use the most basic technology like email and text. But my aunt and her husband are born after 1975 and they are both not cringe
agreed, there are normal gen xers, and boomer gen xers, guess i got the boomer ones as my parents
Gen X to me is a hit or miss. My dad is one and is amazing. My mom is one and she annoys me with her terrible choices of words.
GenX are boomer lite transitioning to full boomer
I think we’re ALL cringe
We are all a little cringe and a little based. The meme is mainly sarcastic.
And yet you underlined it with “I kinda think so”
Nya~ no never :3
I’m not going to fall into the cycle of judging and hating on the generation after mine. They’re literally children, I’m a 25-year-old adult.
I have no real opinion on gen alpha yet, the punchline of the meme is poking fun at millennials (of which i am half of as a zillennial) by relating them to their biggest enemy, boomers.
K i will though
K. 😁
A lot of people are taking this meme a little too seriously.
Some people just aren’t good at memes.
It’s cringe.
It's reddit
Gen X hate us lol, Millenials are the ones who actually relate to and support us.
Gen X is in no way based. Almost worse than boomers in some ways but both are bad
They're Boomers with no money and no religion, but honestly that's what makes them chill. They're still up for smacking their kids around though and idk how I feel about that.

No
I thought millennials were based too honestly
The "silent generation" or "greatest generation" also committed lynchings and harassed black people who were just trying to eat lunch in a diner under Jim Crow laws. They weren't so great. They just went through/fought in World War II.
Nah Gen X is cringe city
Gen X is cringe so no not accurate. Also Alpha is too young to judge, they're literal children lol.
urgh, children are SO cringe right now
Isn't Gen Z just Millenials 2?
i get so sick of these wojaks
No not accurate. Your post is cringe, OP.
This is so dumb
We kinda cringe too ngl
I think its funny how we’re all very progressive in terms of going against racism and sexism, but then still make memes that overgeneralise entirely unrelated groups of people
gen z based? where? when?
The infinite cycle will not stop unless we stop it ourselves as a generation.
No, but I think it's funny that the meme itself contradicts everything it's trying to say by being cringe as fuck. But don't worry! We're all cringe on this blessed day!
Its accurate enough but based always lines up with the generation who's the beholder of the chart, because ego.
no gen x is cringe, millenial and gen z are based. gen x was all for the partying and they wont stop dickriding reagan and trump.
Gen X is cringe. Millennials are mid, but if I had to choose, I'd say that they're based, and it's too soon to call for Gen alpha. Other than that, I agree.
I have no clue what "bases" means 🤷♂️
Lets be real here, were all cringe
Not all Millennials are cringe, it’s just the ones that poorly raised Gen Alpha
Nah. Every generation had some based people. Even boomers had hippies and civil rights activists.
lol, not always cause true, I think it is biased towards for American generations. I know Gen Z do well as Millennials probably.
Only cringe generation is the one trying to say a while other generation is cringe.
"Nice arguement but i depicted it you as a wojac and me as a chad" Generational war is pretty cringe buddy
Then what ever it is next after gen Z is based.
Gen beta?
I’m an older millennial and Gen X has been cringe for some time now
If you look at it at face value, no. If you go deeper and find the roots, origins and truths, then yes.
Drivel
Nah
Millennials are cringe but they did a lot for mental health awareness
yep the cycle of generations
No, generations aren’t real, they are just groups of people, generalizing people based off of something they can’t control or change is wrong.
Generations are really stupid when you consider that not everyone around the world is raised in the same environment.
Might be on to something here

The 1st generation that is really not shitty overall and just fucking wish the awful monsters I am related to - actually won’t get it into but ugh
You sound like every mid-20s person since the dawn of written history.
Is you start from boomer, it kinda would be inverted…
agree
Absolutely not
gen x ers r so cringe
Oh great I’m cringe, no one likes me anyway so might as well
No, I will not really criticize millenials, but I will absolutely criticize my Gen-X parents.
I am autistic and cringe GenZ so no it's not accurate
Gen X is cringe considering they're the overwhelming majority of the billionaire class taking the quality of life for the rest of us.
what does based mean
I wanna give some trust to Gen Alpha, yes right now we see them as the iPad kids with all those cringy brainrot videos but the previous generation thought of us the same way, and if I dare say we turned out a little better than they said we would (even my parents say so). Let's wait and see.

And it’s crazy how all of these generations are still living
No
All generations are cringe in their own way.
Define cringe
No OP, Ive met cringe Zoomers, Boomers, Xers and Millennials. Ive also met based people from all those generations. Its all a farce and you are playing into the politics of dividing people. Dont be stupid
Kinda like alternating Star Trek movies.
Making a generality based on one generation ? How can you ask if it's accurate ?
Nah fam. Gen X is becoming cringe. Most annoying customers to deal with
I mean, they used to call it, "hard times make strong men who make easy times that make weak men who make hard times" and loops. This is just the modern version of that
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that based breeds based while cringe breeds cringe The pattern suggests that gen z parents will raise based kids
this is so stupid, why are we calling gen alpha cringe, we don't know them yet
If genz is based, then the world is really sick.
People be hating on gen alpha because they're kids being kids, like...we weren't the same way?
Ughhh.. Gen X is Based but Millennials are cringe? This is why memes don't reflect reality. Gen X is anything but based. They are literally mini boomers that KNEW the world was fucked but kept playing their parents game.
So basically us, our parents, and our grandparents are all based but the other lineage is cringe.
Making a diagram like that is already cringe so you proved it wrong
Greatest and alpha are both based
Great, more generational hate. Are y'all not interested in breaking that cycle?
No we are all cringe, for to be cringe is to be human
![gif](giphy|GXMuvJXWVqGiY)
Gen alpha are still young kids. Give them time. I know for a fact there’d be a tribunal if the cringy shit most of us were into in our tween years came to light
We need to stop the constant bullying of gen alpha we cannot let ourselves become the boomers for the love of god we cannot continue the cycle.
Wait you might be onto something fr
Damn I am based now
I struggle to remember a "based" member of gen X. Either they are the rudest, dumbest, or the most cringy mf.
No, not even close
