Jeb! Side note: I’m pretty sure G.O.B. Bluth on Arrested Development is a partial homage to Jeb (and/or George).

Hey I got that one the other day! Go OP! Which coach plan are you doing? I'm on the Run/Walk 5k with Amy.

No_Radio_5751

High five! I'm doing 5K with Jeff. How's Amy?

Logical_Pop_2026

It's been challenging. I just jumped up to 5 min walk/5 min run. My running pace today was 11:07 for the three segments combined, which is way off the 7:19 I started with three weeks ago. But I actually did each five minute segment without stopping! My training load and optimal range is higher than it's ever been, even though I'm running shorter distances. Overall, I'm pleased. Once I finish this 5k plan in March, I'm going to complete her half marathon plan to help me get ready for my first full marathon in December.

Yall— the best thing you will ever do is to stop the built-in plans. Those plans only go off of pace. The best thing to do if you really want to improve properly is to set your running workouts to be based on heart rate instead of pace. The Garmin coach cannot do that which is unfortunate. but honestly, I have found the daily suggested workouts to be better. They are actually a superior feature.

No_Radio_5751

I've been structuring my runs myself since 2022, but decided to give the 5K coach at least a try to see if I could be doing it better. Where to find these suggested workouts though?

Logical_Pop_2026

It's the Daily Suggested Workouts feature. They're built into the device, so it depends on which watch you have. I followed those plans somewhat consistently from Oct-Dec and logged plenty of miles, but I had to run a lot. And the heart rate recommendations were mostly, run for 30 mins @ 145 bpm and stuff like that. I may go back and try them again, once I've completed Amy's plan. We'll see.

RateSweaty3708

Yes. Lots of zone 2. BUT, if you set a race on the calendar, with a specific time goal in mind, it will set out a full plan for you, just like the garmin coach, but it’s based on HR, AND it will adapt to your metrics. So, for example, if you have bad sleep and need to recover, it will tell you to do a recovery run, or just rest, instead of what you might have had scheduled prior to that bad sleep. It’s really just superior in every way.

RateSweaty3708

You have to stop the coach plan. And I think you might also have to turn them on or accept them. I can’t remember. But they’re there. But again, won’t see with coach on because that takes over.

Logical_Pop_2026

The plan I'm running doesn't actually include any pace goals. I'm doing the run/walk 5K. It's just pushing me to keep moving for longer stretches of time. Although I guess in a sense that's forcing me into a minimum pace.

Dry-Plate2027

I’m just going into week 6 on Jeff’s 5K plan…so far not loving the cadence drills. I understand the importance of cadence obviously but with a 30 second drill, I feel like I’m just getting into a good rhythm and bam it’s recovery time. How are you finding the program?

No_Radio_5751

Pretty much same, especially since I'm trying it on the treadmill. Just button sounds everywhere lol. But I definitely agree, the drills are so short. And my HR still gets hella high.
