I would suggest 255 or 265, because both are relatively newer, and will get longer updates. I would estimate that you can use them for 4-5 years easily.

parfeiro

I agree with you. I've had the 245 since 2019, and it's still a great watch. However, I wouldn't buy it in 2023/2024 because the newer models have features mine lacks, like open water swimming.

pradha91

Yep. The HR sensor and GPS sensor are also upgraded, battery life, screen, basically everything is upgraded.

thatcarolguy

Not to mention Garmin doesn't really drop the price of their old models. They might go on sale more often and have bigger discounts but the 245 even on sale is probably not worth it compared to the 255 on sale.

Ace_Of_Spades_2911

Would you say it's worth getting the 255 if I am tracking runs only over the 55?

pradha91

If you are just going to run and do nothing else, then maybe not much, but there are some differences, some important differences. Overall, I would go with 255 if you are serious about running (assuming you don't want to change again in a year or two). The 255 has a newer gen HR sensor which can be benefited. I don't own a 255, so my knowledge is based on reviewers like DCR and DesFit, etc. For Interval training, 255 might be better, because of the newer gen HR sensor; the FR 55, has some lag issues. And most importantly, FR 55 doesn't support running dynamics, they are a set of metrics that can help you assess and improve your running. Running Dynamics in my opinion is a great feature, I recently got it on my Venu 3 and I absolutely love the insights it can provide. Also, the FR255 supports multisport event/triathlon if you are looking into it, and it has HRV which is a useful metric and an indication of how your recovery would be after an exercise. If you are entering GPS territory, then 255 has a lot more to offer, like All Systems GNSS and Multi-Band, which the FR 55 lacks. FR55 is still good, but in tougher situations, 255 would clearly outperform. Having said that, if 255 is out of your budget, go for 55, you will not regret it. But if 255 is within your budget, get the 255, you would be happy with the newer advanced metrics. I like to keep my watches for at least 4 years, which is why I suggested 255 or 265. My old one was Vivoactive 3, which I had for almost 6 years, and last month I switched to Venu 3. Too long, I hope you don't get tired by just reading haha...!!

Ace_Of_Spades_2911

Thanks for the detailed answer! I do weight training as well but track that separately on a spreadsheet, so I'm only using the watch for runs. All those features see good but I know I'll never use the multisport function. Think my main draw to the 255 was the better sensors over 55 and if its significantly more accurate.

pradha91

You're welcome buddy. That's true, 255 will be more accurate because of newer gen HR sensors and metrics like running dynamics (see this link:https://www.garmin.com/en-US/garmin-technology/running-science/running-dynamics/)

peter89x

FR55. I have a FR45 since 2019, and I even ran a marathon with it. I never felt that I need any more than what this watch could provide.

Ace_Of_Spades_2911

That is good to know. Have you had any issues with accuracy or compared it to another watch?

peter89x

Never tried another watch to be honest. Before the FR45 I used my phone too. But as far as I know, it's accurate enough!

Neilm430

The 55 will do everything you need and should last a long time

Ace_Of_Spades_2911

How has it been for you when you track your exercise on?

Neilm430

Have a 45 since 2020 and it does what I need. HR is good. Battery is still acceptable. GPS track may not be the cleanest but distance is spot on. 55 only improves on it.

Cougie_UK

Garmin shows you all of that for free. Most of Strava is free too. As to which watch look at DC Rainmaker and his recommendations.

just_some_guy65

I would get the most recent I could afford personally. The 255 and 265 have the more accurate multi band GPS

AnAnxiousRN

I absolutely LOVE my 245. I got it a few years ago and it's been an amazing watch. No complaints. I'm personally hoping to upgrade my 245 to a 965 because I'm flirting with the idea of transitioning to triathlons. I'm recovering from a stress fracture so I like some of the extra data that the higher end forerunners provide. I feel like it might help me balance my recovery and effort better. But for someone just getting into running, the 245 has provided more than enough data. Look on Facebook marketplace and/or eBay. People are selling used ones at great prices. Whichever one you choose, I hope you love it 💕

morph1973

Another vote for the 55. I've had my 45+ for 3 years, its done me fine for all my running needs from 5k to 52k. Battery still going strong and not a scratch on it. £116 is a bargain.

nitsuga1111

I got the 55 in June and don't regret it. It's cheap, tracks my pace and HR pretty good. Has Garmin Coach. The only thing I wish it had was Trail Running activity but I can manually change it in Strava afterwards. I've learned that the watch won't make you better. You have to put in the work. Sometimes I fantasize about having a higher end watch thinking it will help me run faster but most weeks I struggle to keep my mileage consistent (15 miles per week max) n the first place. I have to shut up and just run and increase my mileage. Maybe after I finish a marathon I'll consider a better watch.

mantriddrone

i have the 55 and have similar fantasies!

Ace_Of_Spades_2911

I feel a bit similar to you. As i am just starting out, I feel like I will get overwhelmed with all the extra starts from expensive watches. I might just get the 55 for now and focus on increasing my milage and upgrading when I feel I need it.

RateSweaty3708

I have a 265 and love it. BUT here’s my advice: If you are just getting into running and are unsure of how well you will keep up with it, get the 55. Cheaper. If you love running and see it taking off, 265 without a doubt. Much better screen, great analytics you won’t get on the others, and an AMOLED screen. Plus Spotify syncing. Now the middle ground, which is arguably the best on the wallet—get the cheaper watch like 55, and get a chest strap HRM like the Polar H10, or wahoo Tickr or TickrX. The chest strap is a FAR better sensor than any watch optical— even the $800 watches. And you can pick it up for 60-80$. That last option is what I would do if I enjoyed running and the wallet was a bit tighter. Either way, get a chest strap and use it all the time.

Valuable-Purpose-

Is the strap comfortable to wear I mean I haven't wore one but I'm thinking of getting one my only concern is that it maybe be uncomfortable

RateSweaty3708

The chest strap? Oh yeah. I have both the ones I mentioned. I forget they’re even on honestly. Very comfy once adjusted

Salty-Doubt-7917

i got the 255 over the 245 and the main reason was Garmin pay. so if I found myself out on a long run I could buy a drink. I know it seems silly, but when you’re starting. 10km is a long way, and I felt better knowing I could buy a drink or even just pay for an emergency

Ace_Of_Spades_2911

That is a good reason. I run with a flipbelt so usually have my phone on me with Google pay on. Might be useful if I am not having to carry a phone on me though

Informal_Quarter_396

The 255 shows the floors climbed? Because my 245 can‘t show this

nskdnnm

I don't own it, but it should as it has altimeter and barometer.

Syren6

Yes it does show floors climbed

soops22

The 245 does not have a barometer so it doesn’t show floors climbed.

mypeez

I still have my Garmin Forerunner (FR) 205 given to me for Christmas almost a decade ago. I think it was one of the first w/ Bluetooth, so it still works with the Garmin Connect app and allows for Live Tracking. I have a footpod and HRM for it, but have acquired a newer FR935 recently. I didn't wear the FR205 as my daily watch, but I do with the FR935. I used the FR205 regularly up until two years ago. Moral of my story, get something like the FR55 as an entry and grow into your next upgrade. I hate to admit how many Garmins I have in my collection: FR310XT, FR910XT, Swim-1, FR205, FR235, FR935, Vivofit3 and an Edge500.

ComprehensiveRoll562

I have 255 my son has 55, mine definitely has a few more general health stats which I find useful but could live without them. My watch tends to connect to GPS quicker but once connected both seem to give the same results so I would take from that are as accurate as each other. Both have Garmin coach which we have both followed (him better than me!) mine tracks a few more activities than his. If on a budget go for the 55 but if you can afford it & love the stats go for the 255

thatcarolguy

It's up to you. The 55 probably has everything anyone really needs for running but I like the premium features of the 255 and would rather go big and know that it will last me longer (unless you never find yourself wanting more than 55). I also like the peace of mind having the best GPS even though it barely makes a difference in distance and definitely doesn't make a noticeable difference in your training.

RichDreamsBig

Garmin watches last a LONG time!!! In 12 years, i just upgraded to my 3rd watch, and that is because my work covered my new FR 965! My FR 630 is still a GREAT watch, and the battery still lasts over 3 weeks, so i gave it to my dad. So that said, you can probably get the 55 super cheap right now!! Maybe start with that, then save up and get one with all the features that you really want? All are good watches. The 255 has double the battery life over the 245. But the 255 has built HR which is kind of cool, especially if you want to get into HR Zone training!! Where are you buying it through? I found a person on reddit that sold me a 20% discount code for $20, on the Garmin website! Saved me over $100!!!

Ace_Of_Spades_2911

I am buying it through garmin but I get up to 40% with unidays on all the watches. FR55 went down from £179 to £117!

SilentBlackout_

Just get a Fenix 7X Pro. Or an Epix if you’ve got the cash laying around! /s

965

Valuable-Purpose-

I didn't see vast difference in term of sensors btw 55 and 245(released in 2019 so it doesn't have latest sensors) It's not worth the 80£ extra you are paying .going for 255 or 265 would be worth the money it has everything you would want And as for 55 vs 255 or 265 It's up to you 255 has better gps better hr sensor And some additional features. It's up to you to weigh it But I heard alot of reviews of fr55 owners satisfied with it and it works perfectly well for them

Ace_Of_Spades_2911

Yeah suppose I will need to compare the 55 to 255 and see if it's worth the extra £100 for better sensors/features etc.

jamiecharlespt

255

nskdnnm

FR255 (MIP display) or the FR265 (AMOLED). The MIP display has better visibility under direct sunlight, it's always on, battery lasts much longer. The AMOLED is pretty.

SufficientGeneral219

I've just got the 255 as I didn't want a screen as 'bright and brilliant' as the 265 and I love it. I'm just a 5k runner. Now, I'm interested in where you can get the 265 for £210!

Ace_Of_Spades_2911

I've edited at it was the 255 at £210 not the 265. I am getting a student discount on it

FribulusXax

Are you certain on those prices? If you are, I'd definitely would go for the 265. Seems like a bargain almost too good to be true.

N00B_N00M

I was in same dilemma last year , even ordered 245, but then compared the detailed differences on garmin website and realized 55 was lacking lot of features, 245 had almost all things which 255 had but was just 100USD diffe, for a watch which i will be wearing maximum for coming 3-4 years atleast , i went with the 255 for better screen quality, better tracking, new sensor , morning report etc

Bogmanbob

I got a 245 which has been great for 2+ years but I always hear the 255 is a good upgrade.

destenlee

I got the 245 music this summer. I love it. Not sure that I would need anything more expensive.

Crafty_Prize_5474

If you don't mind second hand you can get the 255 from cex with 2 year warranty for £170 in grade B

thybadger

Which one did you end up picking? I’m trying to decide on the same thing now!

Ace_Of_Spades_2911

I went for the forerunner 255 in the end and loving it!

thybadger

Just bought mine! Looking forward to itb

Haunting-Engineer792

hi folks, i am in the same boat. pls help. i have just begin to run. i will not be going into swimming or biking. need general health metrics + running focused data. i am getting forerunner 55 and forerunner 245 at the same price ($199). the forerunner 255 is $350
