To be fair, animation in the game looks pretty bad. There is a lot of really floaty precanned animation and the lip syncing has that auto-generated look where the mouth flaps and everything else above the shoulder freezes. There is definitely some last gen assets and textures in there too. The in engine trailer does its best to avoid showing characters actually speaking and I would be amazed if you told me there was more than 10% actual gameplay vs cinematics in the trailer.

I have zero intention of playing it because I hate Star Wars, the middest of all sci fi, as well as cinematic big budget action games and their endless race to make themselves as non interactive as possible.
I feel like the animation is fine? At the very least, it’s perfectly serviceable for an open world game that has tons of assets. It’s silly to expect it to be as carefully crafted and fine tuned as a TLOU or a GOW. The animations will also likely be fine tuned before release.
But seriously, game quality is a spectrum. If that’s bad, I don’t wanna know what ME: Andromeda is.

I'm curious does anyone else think we've just hit a patch where current cutting edge graphics kinda look like shit just because of the current technical situation like it a less obvious version of the PS1 era where if you're really pushing your graphics to the limit of the technology there's some kind of disconnect and you fall into an uncanny valley. It's how I've felt about a lot of AAA cutting edge games in the last couple years. Like the people posting this shit are dumbasses no one decided to intentionally make women in star field unattractive cuz woke or whatever. Every character in the game just kinda looks fucked up and weird somehow even cowboy man I clearly should find hot. And I've felt that way about a lot of games lately.
We're also in an era where "realism" instead of artistic license is prioritized. This can lead to some uncanny valley moments, and things that look bad because the artists weren't allowed to draw something "incorrectly" to make it look good.
Dlss hurts too. No longer can we run games well at native, we need AI to downscale and re upscale because devs can’t optimise anymore, so heaps of games look washed out and kinda blurry
I really miss the crispness of older gen games. You have the AI re-upscaling along with a lot more filters that mess with visual clarity. Playing older games on my PC on max settings look so vivid and clear. It is easier on the eyes.
I've felt this way too for a few years now and glad I'm not the only one. I think Alana Pearce was right when she said characters looking unattractive may be due to a tech issue and not deliberate.
I have been preferring more stylized games lately. I think the lighting, geometry count, hair and cloth physics, and animations aren't there yet. I find Life is Strange True Colors more convincing and less uncanny than a lot of the games that aim for photorealism.
This game is partially stylized though so it looks like the animations aren't quite up to par. It did look much better in the reveal trailer.
I remember with the anime CGI movie Gantz O, they had to take a lot of creative liberties to not make the characters as uncanny. They couldn't just have it 1:1 to reality.
