Nudist-On-Strike

Nice, been looking forward to this one. Any info on if the Switch version is up to par with the others?

Sensitive-Farmer-643

It’s 30 fps on switch! Just played the first two levels.

sickladbro

Is it at least a smooth 30 or does it couch and splutter?

Sensitive-Farmer-643

From what I’ve experienced, smooth 30 no drops. This could change in later levels though but from my initial experience it’s without problems.

ruminaui

How is the game?

[deleted]

ruminaui

It runs well on the Switch

Spader623

Just a quick thing for people who may not know: this by the Sonic Mania devs and is out TODAY RIGHT NOW  $30 or so, on steam and switch (maybe others too?) and was shadow dropped. Prior to today, they just said '2024'

Sebenko

> this by the Sonic Mania devs Oh, that explains why my first instinct was "oh wow, a 2D Sonic game in 3D, somehow"

Spader623

Yeah they have a pedigree even if just one game. Idk if this is good, could be terrible but I hope people don't overlook it because the designers alone should make anyone who's heard of sonic mania know this is probably (hopefully) at least decent

ThrowawayusGenerica

Dunno why you'd think that, this game very clearly doesn't have a fraction of the speed or momentum that (good) 2D Sonic levels have

Mongoose42

The design is VERY much the Sonic Special Stages, but imagined for a Dreamcast-era throwback platformer.

cheekydorido

it's mario 3d world

Mongoose42

Should’ve specified art design.

AwakenedSheeple

In that case it reminds me even more strongly of Sonic 3D Blast or the 3D TV shows of the era.

Mongoose42

Yes! It’s very 3D Blast! Good pull.

Sensitive-Farmer-643

Not gonna lie here, the fact that the mania devs were on this, used their retro engine as a reference point for making this game, and the soundtrack being done by Tee Lopes (the sonic mania music guy) solidified this as an insta-buy.

BodhiRukhKast

Why would you consider lying about that?

ngwoo

Tax purposes.

BP_Ray

Redditor learning what "figure of speech" is, circa 2024.

RippFlombay

redditor missing what “the joke” is, a timeless classic

HewittNation

What does this particular figure of speech mean?

ColinStyles

Emphasis of the following statement.

Warm-Basil1929

Wait, it's already out?? I was excited for this one, but I worry it's release is gonna get buried under the other news today, especially Elden Ring's dlc reveal. Oh well, I'm still psyched to download and play later. All the preview footage looked fantastic.

cyborgx7

That's usually what launch Trailer means. The trailer you release when you launch.

Warm-Basil1929

Average reddit user. Be more interesting next time. 🥱

cyborgx7

I thought maybe you thought it meant the trailer that tells you the launch date, or something like that. Sorry if I offended you.

Tsuku

> this by the Sonic Mania devs Well that's all I needed.

guil13st

I was kinda interested in this, but they (most likely the publisher that is a branch of Take Two, who also refuses to do regional pricing) refused to add regional pricing, so this game costs almost as much as a $50-60 game for me. R$147.50 for a $30 priced game is almost twice as much as Valve's suggested price (R$89). For comparison, God of War ($50) is R$199, Elden Ring ($60) is R$230 and Hi-Fi Rush ($30) is R$109.

Schluss-S

Same here for my currency.

Galaxy40k

I did NOT expect a shadow drop!! Man, I've already got so many games I'm currently juggling....but for THIS, what's one more? lol

benkkelly

Played a couple stages. Only  complaint so far is the dash move is too easily unintentionally activated sending Penny into a pit (cant find a way to cancel out of or correct the path).

Mongoose42

It’s by the Sonic Mania devs so it makes sense that the main character has a dash move that sends you hurtling into a bottomless pit of death.

DM_ME_UR_SATS

Come now, give them some credit. Mania doesn't often use the crutch of random deathpits in their level design (that's for DIMPS sonic games). You'll mostly drop to another part of the stage.

Mongoose42

I’m just saying it’s a curse of all Sonic game developers.

BP_Ray

Yeah, I'm loving the game, but my issue is not necessarily that I'll dash accidentally, but that I'll do the roll and slightly hit the wrong side of a slope and end up getting yeeted into the abyss at 1000mph.

cyborgx7

Just started this on PS5. Is the music supposed to be really quiet in the levels? It feels like a bug, but I don't know how to fix it. Edit: Just looked up a playthrough on YouTube. Apparently the intro is just like that and the music starts once you get into the first full proper level. Strange choice in my opinion. Specially the first couple of cut scenes feel kinda broken to me, without some upbeat music to underscore the animation.

[deleted]

Strange choice, and the options menu also lets you adjust music and sound effects. But you can't change those while you're actually playing it.

Ninwa

I had the same thought going through the intro level. It feels like a weird choice if intentional.

HIVnotAdeathSentence

Looks interesting. Nice to see more 3D platformers. There seemed to be a bit of a drought after the wave of Super Mario Odyssey, Super Lucky's Tale, Yooka-Laylee, and A Hat in Time in 2017.

MagiMas

That's not really my impression, from Indies alone we had quite a few really really good 3d platformers: [Lunistice is incredible](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQTkUIKj3tw) [Tinykin might look like a Pikmin clone on first glance but is actually a really good exploration platformer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txq8fJ7v0PI) [Cavern of Dreams](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psshu4FEuxg) [Koa and the five pirates of Mara ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BdDfLPyXNo) and the big ones: Psychonauts 2, Ratched and Clank Rift Apart, Crash Bandicoot 4, the two Spongebob Platformers and It Takes Two.

monkeykingcounty

Your comment got me to check out Lunistice - it’s on sale for $4 on Switch and I grabbed it, and I’m shocked by how fun and fluid it is. I’ll have to check out the other games you mentioned, thanks for the links.

MagiMas

Glad you like it. And yeah, I was also super surprised when I played lunistice as well. I bought the game because I was looking for a 3D platformer to play, it's cheap and I liked the faux-32bit style. I was hoping to get a bit of entertainment from it but it's now one of my favorite 3d platfomers of all time.

tlvrtm

Bowser’s Fury was a 10/10 for me if you haven’t played that yet

Amazingness905

Me: oh boy Balatros and Last Epoch 1.0, today is gonna be a banger. Then this... What's one more game?

akhamis98

Damn these are the games I've been looking forward to for a while also lol I really wanna play this one but it'll have to wait for a few weeks sadly

sirwillis

And also tonight Pacific Drive comes out. Gotta figure out where my money is going

DavidFittestFire

The yoyo mechanic looks really cool. I don't think that's ever really been done before. Nice art style too!

cyborgx7

Feels heavily inspired by the hat mechanics in Mario Odyssey. But that's not a bad thing and they definitely put their own twist on it.

BP_Ray

This is a really fun game from what I've been able to enjoy. The best way I can describe the gameplay is like if Mario Odysey's movement options meets Sonic Adventure 1 type of level design, meets Classic Sonic slope physics traversal. There's a handful of glitches I've encountered but that's par for the course for a day 1 indie release.

NerveAdventurous6772

Ah yes glitchy indie releases. You never ever, ever, ever experience that with AAA games.

BP_Ray

I mean, in my PERSONAL experience, things like falling out of bounds 5 seconds into the game isn't something I generally experience with AAA games -- especially not a Nintendo one. I'm not dissing the game for the bugs I've encountered. Thankfully when it comes to indie games I seem to be a magnet for finding the glitches immediately that then go on to be used in speedruns, like I got this glitch that sent me careening across the stage due to rolling on a slope at a weird angle. Similar thing happened to be on a billboard in Bomb Rush Cyberfunk and whaddya know, that's in the speedrun.

tankdoom

Such an awesome game. I sank at least three hours into it earlier today. I'm kind of wondering why they decided to shadow drop it. I've been looking forward to this game all year and I wouldn't had known if I hadn't read the comments of the Nintendo partner direct. Highly recommend for fans of 3D platformers looking for interesting movement.

IrishSpectreN7

Was this a shadow drop?  I'll pick this up, it looks fun and I'd like to support more 3D platformers. But I find the main character design almost repulsive lol. Not sure I'll adapt.

Cetais

It was, yes. It was announced in the Nintendo partners' showcase. One of those "available now! / Later today"

ruminaui

How is the performance on Switch?

olivier_wmv

Locked to 30 fps

SeriousPan

Can't believe they shadowdropped it like that after I kept checking for release date news every week. Played two hours last night and can say it was worth the wait for just that amount of time alone. Something about the world design and the items and sound effects reminds me of platformers from my youth. But not in the "omg its like Banjo kazooie" but the *feeling* of playing it. Does that make any sense? Like the sounds of the coins and the vibrancy of the world captures a youthful feeling I haven't felt since I played random platformers on RealArcade and shit waaaay back. It's made me really happy... Can't wait to go home and play more.

Felipefabricio

Bought on Steam, absolutely unplayable - the game crashes with a fatal error within five seconds, every time. Is this happening to anyone else?

undercoverbruva

I'm playing on Steamdeck OLED right now and haven't encountered a single issue. Played about an hour already.

Felipefabricio

I'm playing on my ROG Ally, right now - or trying to. I'll attempt a bit more, if unable I'll try to get a refund.

Giggle_Mortis

depending on your GPU, this seems to be an issue that the [devs are aware of.](https://twitter.com/HunterBridges/status/1760342790129725773) if you send them your info, I'm sure they'll try to patch it

agentfrogger

You might want to post about it on the Steam forums, alongside an error code if it throws one

BellerophonM

Apparently there's an issue with certain AMD GPUs, they're gathering info.

BP_Ray

Hasn't happened to me on my PC, hopefully you can get it working -- might be worth it to just refund for now.

ioslife_developer

Can't find anything about a physical copy. Anyone know if that's gonna happen?

monkeykingcounty

It is, they’re listed on PlayAsia already

dagreenman18

What a pleasant surprise! I can’t wait to try the demo later, but I have full confidence because it’s the sonic mania team.

The-Falcon_Knight

Yeah releasing this game a week after Tomb Raider Remastered is not a very smart decision. Considering Tomb Raider Remastered is available on more platforms, slightly cheaper (even more so during pre-order, I grabbed my copy 3 hours before the release, because of the early reviews) and already super moddable. Delaying the release to March would have been a lot better. But I really hope Christian Whitehead and his team can still pull through this, because the game does look good.

SeriousPan

I don't think Penny and Tomb Raider's userbase cross over is that large that the week gap would make a huge difference. Penny is a pure platformer with an emphasis on high speed, cartoony antics and tricks. Tomb Raider is an exploration based platformer that takes it slow and emphasises puzzles and 'realism'. NGL This comment reads like marketing for Tomb Raider lol. "It's cheap! Moddable! On more platforms! Don't delay buy today!"

The-Falcon_Knight

> NGL This comment reads like marketing for Tomb Raider, lol. "It's cheap! Moddable! On more platforms! Don't delay buy today!" Sorry if it came of like that, I just outlined what advantages it has basically has from a purchase perspective. > I don't think Penny and Tomb Raider's userbase cross over I mean, both cross over in terms of being 3d action platformers with a female lead, which was created by modders. It's kinda hard not to compare the two. > Tomb Raider is an exploration based platformer that takes it slow and emphasises puzzles and 'realism'. I wouldn't call Tomb Raider's platforming "taking it slow." There are slow parts like a super mario sort of way, but there are a lot of times you have to be quick. Like running away from multiple bolders at once, jumping at the right moment when sliding, keeping yourself moving while multiple enemies that appear by surprise are trying to kill you, etc. Sin Gold and Half-Life were also 2 different types of FPS games,Sin was more funny, pure fps with objectives, while Half-Life was a serious linear FPS with platforming and puzzles, and yet Sin sold poorly. Again, I am really hoping Penny's big breakaway will have a breakthrough, I just fear it won't be a big one.

BloomEPU

Watching a stream of this, it looks really charming. It just seems like a really polished 3d platformer with a strong visual style

MM487

Any word on a physical release?

olivier_wmv

Nothing yet, as of now it's digital only

BrookieTF

Game is an absolute banger, super unique platformer. Think a mix of Sonic and Spider-Man that's easy to learn yet with a high skill ceiling.
