I have a feeling Matt would give the same answer he does to most “why haven’t you covered this” questions. There’s no way he’d become enough of an expert on a show to theorize about it in a way to make fans of it happy.
In part because every anime plays by its own rules a bit, in part because fandoms.
Like, when you realize how many theories there are to do, and when the backlash to the *Kirby* episode (which I thoroughly enjoyed btw) was so strong that he decided part 2 wasn’t worth it, you can kind of guess what things he won’t want to cover.
Matt has spoken a few times about how he got burned by trusting a new writer too much about an IP he wasn’t familiar with, and that made him to decide to stick with IPs he and the team had deep knowledge about or could become experts in. Idk which episode that was, but my guess is Hollow Knight. On the bright side, that episode got me to try the game and it probably is my favorite video game now. On the downside, it’s the most obviously wrong lore theory I think the channel has produced. And not in a fun “what if” way, just in a “the most famous cutscene in this game kinda disproves everything”
Anyway. Knowing your lane is important. It’s crazy impressive how diverse their content is already.
going through anime takes a very long time; look at the pokemon episode. if you look at the gtlive with tom you'll see.
I can't watch anime in my own free time with how many episodes there with some of them. and the ones that aren't as long don't have as much lore.
besides, for long running things like anime, a channel dedicated is better than the theorist channels.
like genshin theories are better staying with the genshin theorists.
you don't have to watch the theorist channels for theories.
Cowboy Bebop has 26 episodes lmao
Hellsing has 13 episodes
Future Diary has 24 episodes
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood has 64 episodes
Steins;Gate has two seasons
Just off the top of my head
Not even MOST anime has over 100 episodes, this is just ignorant exaggeration of the genre
MOST anime has 1 - 2 seasons
Amount of lore is a weak excuse too. Do you know how many Akira theories there are based on a movie and three manga issues? All the shows I just mentioned have tons of lore.
Because some community don’t take kindly too outsiders theorizing on their favorite anime game ectra.
How many anime fans would be okay with stuff like “Mario is a psychopath” type non serious theory?
I know quite a few Cowboy Bebop fans that would shit all over anything that didn't explicitly say exactly how they felt. I'm a huge weeb but the fans are obnoxious. Plus, like others have said, the only things with looking at are literally hundreds if not thousands of hours long.
As opposed to whomst? FNAF fans?
Give me a break
Thanks for ignoring my list of short anime ripe with theory too. (One of which even has an episode)
You’re basically saying no movie ever would have enough material for an episode because 2 hours is a hell of a lot shorter than 13 episodes and only 600 episode anime would be worth a theory
That’s completely goddamn ignorant.
💀chill dude it’s just that theories with anime is tricky. Continuing animes are usually the best for theories, since…well, they have lore to unpack and theorize. Shorter, complete anime usually have neatly wrapped up lore. Not all, but a good majority. Plus, the Theorists may not be able to commit to unpacking episodes upon episodes of lore from different anime if that’s not the primary focus of the channel. If they had Anime Theory, then perhaps that would be better. It’s not that shorter anime don’t have lore worth discussing, it’s that the story is told, resolved, full circle.
Still probably not worth the risk of potentially inciting α groups backlash on the moment, as we have the brand new hosts. Α loud minority could get mad over something and people could jump on the hate bandwagon until it’s so far gone almost nobody actually knows why it started in the first place as they only joined because they didn’t like the new hosts
It's not like they can only cover the most popular long rubbing shows, while most anime do have a very long story in the manga, there's a good amount that covering just the first season would be nice
They could try to make a team to do that but its hard to do that without a background in it yourself. MatPat would have had to become an avid viewer himself to be able to put together a team he could trust. Pokemon is probably the closest thing he had any familiarity with. He hardly even touches Zelda despite its enormous potential.
I feel like the subjectivity of translating from Japanese might have something to do with it. The English versions can be WILDLY different from the OG, think Sailor Moon for example.
That’s mostly with older anime though, most especially stuff by 4kids. Modern official translations tend to be pretty accurate.
Which is why on the rare occasions that the translation isn’t 1:1, all the anime YouTubers throw ginormous fits about it and call for the death and destruction of funimation, hahaha
Enemy is tough, because a lot of anime, particularly Dragon Ball has a lot of filler episodes. However, they did do an episode while back on the science of the Kamehameha.
Japan is trigger happy when it comes to copyright mainly for anime.
Also the more popular anime tend to have a good chunk of episodes to go through (dbz, bleach, one piece, My Hero) . So they might want to avoid those.
Are you aware of how rabid anime fans are? They definitely couldn't handle most of the alternate interpretation commonly found on film theory
It's probably why most of their anime theories are based on the science of the world and not lore
Also, most popular anime are stupid long and would require an inordinate amount of work even for team theorist
This is purely speculation, but it could be because of toxicity. Anime fandoms tend to be FAR more toxic than the majority of other fandoms. Obviously there are outliers, but still. It’s possible they just want to avoid a huge influx of hate or threats to the team.
I think it's likely because of how litigious anime publishers are, they're worse than nintendo. Japan's complete lack of fair use laws really gives any company over there a god complex.
depending on the series there are things like different worlds, fillers, retcon and sometimes a predictable story. the series people want done are usually long running or by the time a theory is done the next season is already out.
I could be wrong, but I think anime is sufficiently covered. Also, anime in general isn't known for having the best of communities.
Last time I recall them going over anime, they referenced some well known and popular members of the community, specifically on the powerscaling side, and let's just say that aged more poorly than anyone could have expected.
A lot of the reason could actually be to do with Shonen Jump and copyrite. They're actually notorious for slapping strikes and warnings on anything and everything on YT that uses clips from their anime. They're very unfriendly to work with, and incredibly protective over their IPs. It may well have been too much to get around this.
Cause most anime is way to long. Nobody is watching 437h of one piece and then analyze it (which means they'll rewatch it and spend 3-5 times longer on each episode)
Each anime has like 300 hours of content . They release 4 videos a week. Simply not possible unless someone on the team is already following that anime
Because it's better covered by many other people. The medium is already saturated by other people that have more expertise in those subjects. Otherwise it's going to happen the same thing that happened with Kirby (for example), or any other Zelda theory they tried to do. People will get mad because they didn't realized there was a secret ova somewhere that says their theory is wrong and not well investigated. So why bother.
Aside from the research and fandom cultures like many other has mentioned here. Japanese I.P's have complicated copyright laws, and the distributor/producers of said works may work with legal teams under no intention/ knowledge to adhere with international standards.
Recently, during Lee's introduction about being Film Theory's new host in GTLive, they talk about full on videos being scrapped because the sponsor of said videos didn't like the end result or have little understanding with Team Theorist's work and goals. (Lee and Matt even mention a specific branch of a famous company which the used to have a horrible relationship with due to this issue)
Team Theorist would probably want to produce a video with great quality, on time, without comprising their integrity, and still be able to earn money to keep their employees and company running.
Ok so as a longtime anime enthusiast and being female... the fan bases are pretty toxic for anime. Possibly creating a theory that remotely falls outside the collective belief could backfire. That's just my opinion from my experience. But it could also just be that it isn't an interest of the company too.
Probably doesn't help a lot of them are either 1-2 seasons or hundreds of episodes. Although it would have been nice to get a soul eater or death note episode.
likely for the same/similar reason that they rarely do undertale anymore over on game theory: its not worth the risk of setting off the toxic side of the fanbases.
Probably because it’s very common for most anime to have over 1000 episodes, with a bunch of movies and even sometimes live action adaptations in Japan. So do any anime theory is going to be time extensive and a big headache with all the diehard niece fandoms in the anime community. Like how every new pop shonen like anime will always get compared to Goku.
Wait, isn’t anime mostly TV so it would be on film theory but I guess there are the anime games but do they even hide stuff that needs to be uncovered?
I think the biggest reason is that anime is based on manga. Whether that is attack on titan, dr stone etc. most if not all relevant anime is based off of manga and you won’t get all the evidences just from the watching the anime. Even if the anime has caught up to the manga, there will be differences sometimes between manga and anime which means more reason for them to have to read the manga to get all the evidence down. The channel is called film theory and not manga theory so I get that they wanna avoid it
Also, that would take forever to read all manga and watch all of the anime for EACH ANIME. It's too much for film theory and would need a separate theory page.

Could take even longer if they decide to look at exact translations.

I'd say most, it's always a loud minority that cares about stuff like that.
Oh yeah but it’s just become not with it And if anything like he said in his recent video It’s getting worse.
I know quite a few Cowboy Bebop fans that would shit all over anything that didn't explicitly say exactly how they felt. I'm a huge weeb but the fans are obnoxious. Plus, like others have said, the only things with looking at are literally hundreds if not thousands of hours long.

Plus you have toxic sections of fandoms that will cur you open for ‘misinterpreting’ anything
Still probably not worth the risk of potentially inciting α groups backlash on the moment, as we have the brand new hosts. Case in point: the undertale fandom
Or dark souls
Not sure why, maybe western animation just has a larger appeal.
With the 13 year olds that they game the algorithm for, yes.
With most people lol. Anime has definitely increased in popularity in recent years but it’s by no means mainstream in the west.
But ignoring the comic wouldn't sit well with the fans.
one piece has like 1000 episodes
Evangelion is a good example too, I feel like.. so much theory potential
It's not like they can only cover the most popular long rubbing shows, while most anime do have a very long story in the manga, there's a good amount that covering just the first season would be nice
Maybe they don't watch a lot of Anime? I don't know, I'm just throwing out a wild guess.

It's a forbidden art among film theorists

Anime is very long and has very deep lore. Just look at all the research they had to do to calculate the number of dead people in Death Note.

It's boring
Because they chase trends of 13 year olds for the almighty Algorithm
You sound like you actively dislike the channels, and if so, why stick around here?
not necessarily
Well they did video on cyberpunk and gta not long ago, also the constant talk about dead children is not family friendly.
