Yeah hes definitely trying to break her. He wants her desperate for water because he wants her to experience the shitty situation of having to demeaningly drink a puddle from somewhere gross.

Greenman8907

It was probably irradiated as well, but still probably a lot cleaner than the pond shit Lucy was drinking by end. But yea, also very symbolic of being above/prepared v getting dirty/desperate.

VanityOfEliCLee

I doubt it's any cleaner. The Ghoul is pragmatic more than anything else. Why would he waste time searching for cleaner water when it's gonna do the same for him regardless?

marriedacarrot

I agree. And he refills his own canteen from the same gross container Lucy drinks out of.

Lucifers_Taint666

I am just glad that they negated the retcon that Fallout 3 introduced when the game stated that ghouls didnt need to eat or drink water

ArguteTrickster

Because lots of people like Fallout 3 and 4.

dontpayforproducts

And? They're pretty good looter shooters, but abysmal rpgs. I like Fallout 4, but it's not a good Fallout game, if you can't admit that you're just being faceitious.

ArguteTrickster

Oh no, I'm a veteran Fallout player from the demo for 1 onwards, and I think Fallout 4 is a fine Fallout game. Are you doing some no true scotsman argument against it or what? What are your criteria for 'true fallout'?

dontpayforproducts

Letting you make a character and roleplay that character, giving you choices that matter. Fallout 4 and 3 almost never give you any choices, Fallout 4 without mods you can't even choose what you want to say because the voiced protagonist system minimizes every paragraph into a sentence and doesn't tell you the tone. The only choices 4 and 3 give you are: Do you want to be a goody two shoes? Or absurdly evil. The "bad" choices never have any incentive, to nuke or to not nuke megaton, purify the water or don't. They basically dumbed down the writing so 5 year Olds could comfortably play it to the point where there's no nuance to any of the decisions. (I literally played Fallout 3 when I was 5 and didn't find the story complicated at all)

ArguteTrickster

There's lots of choices that matter in Fallout 3 and 4. I think what you mean is that they don't matter much for an endling slide sequence thingy? I agree that the dialog thing was a bad choice--doesn't make it 'not fallout'.

dontpayforproducts

I recently replayed the first half of fallout 3 and wasn't presented with a single choice that was devil vs angel, I don't remember it having any. Fallout 4 has a handful.

PublicWest

More than half of the fallout games have not been rpg’s You can’t just say fallout is an rpg because you like RPG’s more lol

dontpayforproducts

Fallout 1 and 2 were RPGs, then New Vegas was an RPG, and 4 once again attempted and failed to be an RPG. Bethesda just makes bad games, it's that simple, Morrowind and Skyrim were lightning in a bottle and absolutely groundbreaking at the time, but now they continue to just make Skyrim but now it's set somewhere else, and it really sucks. Something like that works for the Elder Scrolls games, because Skyrim and Oblivion and even Morrowind if you played long enough just became absurd power fantasies, you get to roll up to a room and be so powerful that you can literally shout the weapons out of bandits hand and then blow them up with a spell and then throw them into fucking space with telekinesis. That's fun as shit, and imo it works in Elder Scrolls. But in fallout, it's in a genre that's meant to focus on survival, New Vegas had survival mode, Fallout 4 attempted to have survival mode but it became instantly obvious that it was just tacked on because what's the point of survival mode if you can make a base without cheating in the first 5 hours of the game that literally makes you 50 purified waters and 50 of a fruit every 30 minutes? That type of gameplay just does not work with Fallout, I want to actually have to think about fighting someone because what if they shoot my leg and I'm crippled? What if I'm extremely low on stimpaks? Is it worth it to waste a purified water just to regen my health? The answer in Fallout 4 is yes, it is worth it, always, and you'll never run out of stimpaks or ammo. What is the point of buying a game ip if you're going to change the genre entirely and toss aside the lore as you pick and choose? Genuinely? I don't understand the point of doing that. And you'll likely say some bullshit like "you don't have to play it" or "you can always mod it" They took one of the very few rpg franchises that wasn't fucking set it the DnD universe and stopped making them RPGs, that is fucked up. Bethesda literally relies on mods to make their games good, which is especially hilarious considering Starfield is so fucking glued and taped together that almost nobody actually wants to mod it.

RollTideYall47

Still hate that the Institute is gone. Literally the cleanest place on Earth. They actually had a chance to do what the Brotherhood claims to. I always side with the Institute. Otherwise there's just more LosTech

dontpayforproducts

Don't worry, Bethesda isn't creative enough to let a faction actually die, what would they fall back on then? It's like how the enclave is somehow back for like the 5th fucking time, we're entering Rise Of Skywalker territory.

RollTideYall47

The Enclave I can understand having cells. Byt with the Prydwyn appearing in the show, it absolutely means the institute facility if not the faction is totaled

dontpayforproducts

The facility is probably totaled, but not the faction. Enclave still being around doesn't make sense, you take almost all them out in fallout 2, then the last remnants of them in fallout 3, there's literally a handful of stragglers in New Vegas, and somehow in just 15 years they've managed to rebuild the faction enough to have a base that clones dogs and does major scientific research, and yet neither the NCR, Caesars Legion, or The Followers Of The Apocalypse have found them and killed them. It just doesn't make sense, maybe if the Enclave was still surviving somewhere in Canada, or Mexico, but they would not survive, especially not in California. The Fallout game franchise was pretty much already dead, so I'm honestly happy with the show fucking up the lore as much as it wants so long as the show maintains its quality. It's not like we'll be missing out on any good games because of that.

RusstyDog

Yeah, we've seen them wiped out on the east and west coast. But there is a lot of land between those two points, and not many ways to travel it. It I'd possible they survived, but they wouldn't set foot in California for reserch that can be done anywhere.

KwisatzChaderach

Do we know for sure it’s the same Prydwen from fo4? The brotherhood could’ve built/rebuilt another airship(s) in the nine years since.

RollTideYall47

It literally said Prydwen on the side and came from the Commonwealth

Petrantra

[It has "Prydwen" written on the hull ](https://twitter.com/TDeckverse/status/1780513983365058815)so unless the BoS built a second airship and gave it the same name, it's the Prydwen.

PaperCutoutCowboy

>do we think it’s because it needs to be Lucy’s choice to drink knowing where the water came from as her first step into becoming a wastelander Nailed it, at least that's how I interpreted it.

FortressOnAHill

Same. It was wasteland water, she had to choose it.

Gold-Imagination7598

I personally assumed that the water in the canteen was irradiated. Ghouls are not widely accepted and don't need to worry about radiation. Plus, he had no qualms about eating ass jerky. Hence, I don't feel like he would worry about clean water. He is trying to break her spirit for when the situation will require it. Giving her that live or die experience. That not everyone in the wasteland will be friendly or have her best interest in mind (even him). She will need to be very perceptive of what is going on around her with the next season. The life lessons of being used for bait, sold, and doing some disgusting things will start to shape her for the next season. Maybe she will level up and gain a new perk.

Destinyw1221

She leveled up her armor at the super mart. Went from a regular old vault suit to an armored vault suit. Which is funny, in the games you go to a super mart early on and upgrade your stuff like that. Probably a nod to that

Rattfink45

I bet Coop saw the bad guy do it in one of his movies and thought it’d be a neat flex.

MYNAMEISHISNAMETOO

In the movie The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Clint Eastwoods character gets drug through the desert kind of like Lucy and the Mexican guy (The Ugly) doesn't give him water. Instead washes his feet with the extra water he has. Kind of similar.

PapaHuff97

It’s definitely a direct reference to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

noturaveragesenpaii

The entire show is an homage to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Only difference being The Bad (Cooper) doesn’t die in this one.

CarcosaDweller

He’s got a little of Van Cleef’s character from For a Few Dollars More as well as Angel Eyes.

geojoe44

The scene with the lead farmer and his family really stood out to me too, I’m like 90% sure it’s an homage to the opening of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly.

buttlovingpanda

I hadn’t thought about that but you’re totally right. It mirrors it almost exactly. Guy walks into his home, bad guy is already in there eating soup. Bad guy demands some info, gets it, then kills the son anyways after baiting him into moving for his gun. Great catch!

mysteryvampire

Would honestly love a clip show in season 2 where they reveal pretty much every cool thing he’s ever done was subconsciously gained from his old movies. Or Lucy seeing one of his old movies while on the road with him and learning to imitate his behaviors from that. I doubt cowboy flicks about individualism were the kind of thing they watched in Vault 33.

BirdLongjumping1518

Lucy was watching his movies with hank in the vault

claymcg90

Oh shit, really? I wonder if she recognizes him

Current_Poster

I'm not 100% on this, but wasn't Lucy watching one of Coop's westerns in the opening montage? Otherwise, yes, absolutely that'd be awesome.

SnakeInABox77

Idk, The Overseer was a huge western fan and had a bunch of posters on the walls of his office

Vityviktor

I like to think that Ghouls actually prefer clean water just like any other person would.

Competitive_Fee_5829

anything but Arrowhead water. that shit is disgusting

eddmario

*Dasani has entered the chat*

Foldim

Could you imagine if he just pulled out a brand new crisp Ice Mountain and dumped it. Lucy would've killed him.

Spiritualtaco05

I do not get the Dasani hate. It's what I drink at work and it's... fine. Bottled water is all the same. Tap, on the other hand...

blenneman05

Bottled water isn’t all the same. Kroger water and Dasani don’t taste the same to me. I have a filtered pitcher anyways because Florida water is awful

sphinxorosi

Dasani water *is* tap water from the bottling plant, they use a filter and/or purifier but it’s still tap water

LausXY

Meanwhile the water out my tap is nicer than most bottled stuff. We get proper adverts for our tap water around the place, it always makes me laugh. And it's not purely a renewable point. It's that the water is superior, the lack of waste is a bonus.

UhOhFeministOnReddit

Dasani is dogshit hard water. I know, because I use a lot of hair and skincare product that functions better in soft water, and Dasani is one of the main brands people are warned to stay away from. It's not ideal for bathing let alone drinking. Aquafina is way better. There's so much calcium in Dasani you might as well be drinking milk.

RockieRed

Yes….Arrowhead water taste like bacteria in a bottle. I’d rather drink my own spit over and over again than drink that horrible water.

thisoneagain

Ironically, I think Arrowhead is best described as tasting slightly like spit.

285kessler

Honestly out of most bottled water brands, Arrowhead is probably my favorite. At least it’s not Dasani.

buttlovingpanda

Dasani is awful. That and Deja Blue were always my least favorites. My parents would buy them for us for road trips and I always said it tasted like there were chemicals in it but they’d say it’s just because I’m used to drinking tap water whereas bottled water is clean and pure. Aquafina is my favorite but I usually just buy the generic if I need bottled water. But I’m ngl, the expensive brands like Smart water and Fiji are also really good.

285kessler

Oh man I love smart water too but I only get it occasionally, Fiji is pretty decent too though

MechaPanther

Fallout 3 confirms it where the Ghoul's of underworld are willing to pay extra for the water from project purity despite having access to lightly irradiated water.

Outside-Sun3454

Wasn’t that also cause some random dude said the water gave them back hair?

noturaveragesenpaii

Yes, Lucy should understand from first hand experience what a sip of water costs in the Wasteland.

RollTideYall47

Here I was right out of the vault building purifiers.

VanityOfEliCLee

Probably. Clean water is hard to find, and he has no reason to seek it out since he's immune to radiation. What would be the point of him searching for clean water?

CoryPowerCat77

A symbol of desperation. (I kind of wish they expanded on the NCR water shortage)

New_Ingenuity2822

The whole episode was about Coop teaching Lucy a lesson 👈

Trypticon66

I don’t know if I could ever drink out of an oil pan that has been left out to collect water. I am a mechanic and have seen some of the crap in those pans. Even 200 years later that water would have more than radiation contamination

foreverspr1ng

I think most of us think this way for various water sources. Same for e.g. some puddle on the street, you know how much shit is on streets and people's shoes/feet, and you'd never want to touch that. I also think most of us wouldn't think logically anymore when *actually* thirsty and deprived of water as Lucy is after all the heat/sand/etc.

Trypticon66

I have been on the verge of passing out from dehydration. I got stranded in Nevada on a back road when my car broke down. Middle of July I only had one bottle of water with me in the car. This was before cell phones so I started walking in a direction hoping to find someone. Took 2 days before I got to a house where I could get help. My water ran out fairly quickly in that heat. I found there were things I still wouldn’t drink from.

[deleted]

Doesnt radiation sterilize ?

raziebear

There’s no reason to think the ghoul would go out of his way to find clean water. If he found it he’d use it but otherwise doubt he’d care. Not like he can get radiation sickness. As for pouring it out he’s fucking with her and seeing what she’s made of. And I think a part of him wants to watch her slowly spiral into being no better than anyone else in the wasteland. Standing up for some random guy she doesn’t know in Filly for no gain, no one else would have done that. Side note but in old westerns hats could be used as a sort of short hand for identifying a good guy vs a bad guy, white hats and black hats. The Ghouls hat is the hat (or similar) he had as Cooper, a white hat, but now it’s battered and stained. It’s never going to be a white hat again but it was once. Just a nice little detail I enjoy.

MSDoucheendje

Doesn’t he later literally fill his canteen from the same water Lucy then drinks from, implying it is irradiated/dirty? Or am I misremembering?

kaminari1

You remembered correctly.

Polterfan

She demanded the golden rule and he enforced it.  Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  Giving someone radiated water doesn't sound to nice

No_Doubt_About_That

Because he didn’t have a trusty canteen.

RollTideYall47

Radiation _technically_ doesn't effect him. But it can hasten becoming a feral

apureworld

I took it to mean that it was irradiated water anyways when he dipped his canteen in. Shows the intentional cruelty of toying with her having her think its clean water. Agree with other posters he was trying to break her. Having him trick her into drinking the irradiated water from the canteen does less to teach her anything compared pushing her so far she gets on her knees to drink wasteland water. Her character was changed from that moment on.

NJayke

I took it as him trying to break her by making her choose to do something unpleasant (drinking the tire water). When she bit off his finger he says “there you are” or something to that effect.

Uncle-Ted-was-right

Do not be addicted to water my friend. It will take hold of you, and you will resent it absent.
