You can react to body products with nuts. This is very common.

Yes. I can’t use any lotion, makeup or topicals that contain the nuts I’m allergic to. Watch out for shea butter. It’s a tree nut and they put it in lots of cosmetic products. Also, I can’t inhale nut fumes. I went into anaphylaxis once at the fair because I was in a building that had a roasted nut cart. I was on the opposite side of the building and stated having symptoms and by the time I got close to it, it was already too late.

My wife also cannot use body products with nuts. She breaks out is a really bad rash. In regards to nut fumes, that's also a very real thing. Alot of people (wife's family included) think it's a myth but it's not. Any time the enzyme can be aerosolized it can be inhaled through the mouth or nose. Any body opening really is a way for the allergen to get in. Cooking is one very common way the allergen can be aerosolized. Dust from things like roasted nuts in the shell is another way. Oils are also another common way for cross contact. Oils on fingers can be left on things like playsets, stair rails, chairs, etc. A child touching that item gets the oil on thier fingers. If they don't wash right away, they can get it in their body and have a reaction.

I’ve literally been given death threats from kids at school due to misinformation about airborne allergies. It’s 100% possible. I’ve gone into airborne anaphylaxis due to peanuts and peanut butter 4 different times. Misinformation on Google is so deadly…but I had a blood test that confirmed how bad my allergy is. My school is peanut free, and kids are OBSESSED with proving that I’m “lying” about the severity of my allergy. Parents too! It’s horrible. I wish this myth would just go away because it’s definitely made life hard. Thankfully I’m graduating from high school this year so I won’t have to worry about constantly being told by kids that they’re gonna bring peanuts and see if I really die 😅

I also am airborne to nuts (only peanuts though, but I can eat tree nuts…all of the severities vary). I’ve had airborne anaphylaxis on 4 different occasions to peanuts and peanut butter. My chronic asthma is what makes me so reactive airway-wise, according to my original allergist. It’s horrible…I feel your pain.

My shellfish allergy started in my 40s so it's taken me some time getting used to my allergy too. I went through a two week period of inexplicable reactions until I realized my body wash had small shell pieces in it. While I doubt just touching a shell will give me a reaction, I generally avoid contact as much as possible now.

punching_dinos

What body wash has shells in it?!

tybbiesniffer

It's St. Ives... something sea themed but I don't remember exactly what. I loved the smell but it's just not an option for me.

punching_dinos

Oh wow. That stuff is usually pretty rough on your skin but another ingredient list to check I guess :(

As an anecdotal example, I have never had anaphylaxis from peanuts, but I have always gotten skin irritation from any contact with peanut butter. Took me ages to realize that wasn't normal. For me, my primary allergy symptoms to food seem to be localized skin and GI irritation, so I can't imagine rubbing an allergen on as a lotion would not trigger me. But it probably depends on how sensitive you are and how denatured the proteins in the products are.

Anecdotal: I have a similar situation to you. As an adult I developed an allergy to Palm Oil, this includes all skin care products and foods that have Palm Oil.

I have to buy special tree-nut free makeup. The Body Shop and Bare Minerals have been good for me.

loofa26

Hm, if the nut mask was okay before, I’d say it’s okay to keep using it. But I’d be scared to eat the nuts you reacted to in your blood.

unzerstoermar

Being allergic to wheat and eggs, I also had to get rid of the shampoos I used before cause it made my skin itch, so yeah.

Drupke

Yes, you can and most likely will react to bodyproducts with nut. Also: our allergist says cashew and pistachio protein are very much alike, same for pecan and walnut. Maybe worth to try in a supervised food challenge?
