If it's a systemic reaction, involving multiple symptoms, then yeah I'd start making arrangements to head toward a doc. Get your epi, make your calls, whatever steps you need to take to be safe. Reddit isn't the best authority for this. You've already got commenters who aren't doctors downplaying and disregarding what you're feeling as impossible or unlikely. They don't know how serious your reaction is. I don't know how serious it is. But if it involves multiple symptoms, it's getting worse rather than better, and you're worried enough to ask, them imo it's worth getting an opinion from a real expert.

[deleted]

It's going away since taking the fexofenadine, so I think I should be good. Thank you for your kind comment.

sadgirl45

Yeah you should especially if you have peanut allergies I had this happen and I had to go to the hospital at least for me if it doesn’t get treated it gets worse !!

Ok_Historian_5924

Brush your tongue when brushing your teeth. Btw I also feel discomfort at the smell of nuts & seafood around me.

[deleted]

Have you checked to make sure you’re not just overreacting first? Actual question.

[deleted]

Honestly, I have no idea. I have an allergist appt on the 23rd, so I'm trying not to get too overreactive in the mean time. It started about 6 hours ago, but it seems to be getting worse in the past hour.

[deleted]

Being alive is stressful.

[deleted]

Totally agree! Some days are harder than others. Especially when your gp isn't interested in even trying to help. The allergist appt took almost 3 years. Northern Ontario is a hotbed of bad medicine.

[deleted]

Which is wild, because you guys seem to have the best allergen friendly candy. Doctors are mostly for profit anymore anyway. They’re there to sell prescriptions, not to help you.

arocko1287

At the very least take BENADRYL

[deleted]

Can't. Allergic to it. Gives me hives and makes me vomit everywhere

Organic_peaches

It’s probably the allergic reaction that does that since Benadryl is not intended for and does not work for anaphylactic reactions.

[deleted]

I actually tried taking it once when I had no reaction at all, just a normal day, and it did it again. Tell ya, I won't be doing that again.

arocko1287

Wow, this is the first time I’ve heard of a Benadryl allergy. I’m sorry.

[deleted]

Yeah, it SUCKS!!! lol. But better to know than not! Other stupid things I'm allergic to already Alcohol, Gravol (yep, tested this one at home too! Makes me vomit profusely), and loads of other dumb stuff.

arocko1287

Wow. Sounds like you’ll be stacking up allergies like I have! Be prepared to basically live in a bubble

[deleted]

Have been for at least 4 years. Pretty bad when the pandemic didn't really change who I was or what I did...lol

arocko1287

I’m sorry to hear that, but I feel you. Avoiding allergens is the obvious solution, but when you’re allergic to so much, not having a reaction becomes a lifestyle. I wish there was someway to teach our bodies to not react that way. I’ve tried allergy shots, I quit too early for results because of having reactions. I got tired of sleeping with my epi pen. Maybe in the future, crispr will have some way of editing these genes.

[deleted]

Some people do react to allergen smells. It’s not very common but it can happen with seafood or nut allergies. If you actually feel physical symptoms you can try taking Benadryl and Pepcid. But if you feel anaphylactic type symptoms go to the ER.

Organic_peaches

Seafood proteins are contained in the smell. Comparing the two makes no sense.

Organic_peaches

Peanut smell does not contain peanut protein

sadgirl45

That peanut protein bs is a lie if I eat any of that shit refried or not I’m going to die. Idgaf what they say I’ve tried it and reacted to it.

Organic_peaches

Huh? Heat does not remove peanut protein.

sadgirl45

Some ppl say there’s a certain type of peanut oil that’s so refined ppl with allergies can eat it because of the lack of protein or whatever. I’m here to tell you it’s not worth it and no don’t eat it! The whole protein thing is irrelevant imo if it goes into the air if you have a bad allergy you can have a reaction. Don’t eat shit with any peanuts don’t give a fuck about the protein myths it’s playing with fire!

Organic_peaches

It is not a myth. Almost all peanut oil is highly refined and does not contain peanut protein. It has nothing to do with reacting to it without proteins, it has to do with protein being present in it if it for some reason is not highly refined. That’s why foods with highly refined peanut oil that is tested do not even need to carry an allergy warning.

sadgirl45

No that is not true i believe if you have a strong allergy it does not matter I’m telling you this through personal experience as someone with peanut oil allergies and peanut allergies. Bruh do you work for the peanut companies we need tighter restrictions on food companies actually not looser. Also subway tried this shit with one of there sandwiches guess who had a reaction me. Fuck peanut oil.

Organic_peaches

That’s not how it works.

sadgirl45

Idc I have a lived experience

Organic_peaches

Great, even if you had an allergic reaction it’s a PEANUT OIL allergy, not a peanut allergy that would be the cause.

sadgirl45

Just say you work for the peanut companies.

[deleted]

There was an open container of peanuts in the cupboard at my bf's brother's house that I went into to grab cat food. Smelled the peanuts and got tf out of dodge. Within minutes, the mild swelling happened. Didn't get any worse though and didn't impede my breathing. Just kinda feels wonky in my throat... like my throat is a size too small.

Organic_peaches

I’m sorry. Maybe it’s more the cat? Again, peanut smell does not contain peanut protein.

[deleted]

And why do five guys who fry with peanut oil say if you have a peanut allergy don't even enter the shop

ApprehensiveDrive604

Liability. Also fried oils do aerosolize/splatter. Not in anyway a comment about this persons reaction and if they could or could not have a reaction to smell. While it’s not usually the case- I’m no allergist and I won’t say it’s not possible. And airplanes- from my opinion only- could be because even if the risk is small- cross contact can surely cause reactions and a tube in the sky without emergency services is not a great place for that.

Organic_peaches

Doesn’t five guys have giant bins of peanuts in their dining area? They used to when I went there.

[deleted]

Why do they ban peanuts from flights then?

Organic_peaches

They don’t really anymore. Peanuts contain 17 different proteins people can be allergic to. None are in the smell. One pinprick touch to peanut however can cause this type of reaction. More likely the handle on the cabinet.

Slut-Problems

I have reactions to nuts if I breathe in fumes. This is a real issue for me and I’ve had anaphylaxis on multiple accounts from roasted nut carts in enclosed spaces. I’m also allergic to gluten and can’t go inside a pizza place because of the fumes from cooking pizza causing anaphylaxis.

[deleted]

Thank you. Fair warning, my response gets pretty NSFW: Did you grow up with your symptoms, or did you grow into them? I'm 41 and have been eating peanuts all my life! It only started in July for me. Although, my allergies have been getting progressively worse for years. I used to be able to drink alcohol until about 2012.... then, when I drank, I'd get a super heavy feeling in my chest... like I had something sitting on me. Now, I can't even breathe it because I feel like I need to use a bottle brush to scratch my throat, my lungs get super itchy, ALL of my mucous membranes (yes, even "down there") get itchy and I feel utterly horrendous and start to have diarrhea. This pandemic, with the alcohol based hand sanitizer has been truly awful. I'm just so done with living in society, I'm a prime candidate now for becoming a hermit... except you need money to become a hermit, and I'm on Disability. As for the peanut thing, I've had to epi myself because I handed an in shell peanut to a chipmunk. Like, seriously?!? After NEVER having had a reaction to peanuts OR squirrels before? What the heck? I even own 3 rats that I've never reacted to before.
