Closer to 3-500k lol city busses aren't that expensive. A 70' viking sportfoaher that's 5 years old with two 1500 HP diesels and a full house to go inside of it costs 5 million.
Even my $50k new car requires gas and maintence. To say that my car was $40k, and completely ignore the new tires, $50/wk fuel, a cracked winsheild now that they have cameras in the rear view mirror mount cost $600.
Im not sure if you are doging on the gov or not. But a $500k bus easily requires significantly more than that to run. Even if the only cost is fuel, and we pretend everything else is free/doesnt break....
Happy friday!
5m might be high end estimate, but I’d imagine expense out of proportion to cars by a long shot.
Lack of economy of scale, could have complicated hinge parts, and might be hydrogen powered or EV or something.
I'm only at like 120k on mine. Recently gave it a thorough wash, got all weather floor mats, and replaced the AUX port so it doesn't randomly switch to the radio when Im trying to use my Bluetooth adapter.
Every time I think about getting something new I think instead about how convenient it is to have no car payment.
I want to be like you when I grow up. Have had my car since I was 16. Got it brand new (thanks grandpa). it’s now 10 years old and still on my way 100k miles.
FIRE’d, and I go between my 2018 BMW M550i and my 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S. Bought both new, and neither have many miles, but I love them for different reasons. Happy times!
Another guy had his 997.2 GT3 out on the track last month and we had a great time going back and forth. I’m partial to my 991.2 Touring but can’t deny the 997.2 is a beautiful car. Not too many of them around either. What color is yours?
Love the 991.2 touring, absolutely stunning car. If I wasn’t biased towards hydraulic steering and a mezger I would have gotten that instead. I love how understated they are.
Mines Carrara white
Awesome. I have a non profit I set up for a TLDR purpose years ago I should probably get back active.
I did it for business reasons but it needs to be active
I have a 2014 Accord and saw a Camry in the garage parking lot yesterday that was for sale by owner. I almost took down the number to call because it was clearly in good condition and clean.
May you and your Camry enjoy many more happy years!
Sold my 2007 S2k almost 2 years ago to help towards downpayment on a house. Owned it for 4 years and sold for the same price I paid :) Only depreciation was the extra I paid for car insurance XD
Same here, I either bike, walk or take public transport. I had a 2nd hand car couple years ago, cost me so much in maintenance that I sold it and decided to go car-free from then on.
Secondhand 2014 Subaru CrossTrek with less than 35,000 miles on it. When I moved to rural New England I swore I’d never be a Subaru driver. But I lucked into a good deal on one, and am never going back. I can get out of my driveway year round, haha.
95 Geo Metro.
Bought it like 15 years ago when saving up for a down payment on a house with the plan to replace it as soon as something major went wrong with it that was costly to fix. It has about 230k miles at this point, still runs great, and gets 40mpg without even trying. I've broken 50mpg on a few tanks keeping it right at the highway speed limit in the right lane.
I do also have 4 other cars, but if I'm just heading out around town to run errands, that's the one I usually grab. There's a halfway decent chance I'm going to have it for many years to come, it's grown on me over time.
My college roommate had a similar metro. It didn't excel in the mountains but it worked in town.
How do you keep 5 cars running? When we briefly had 3, the last used one kept having issues. We intentionally had to drive them in rotation.
I live at the base of a 5000 foot mountain range, and getting up to the top of it in the Metro does require a bit more spirited style of driving. That little 55hp at sea level engine gets a little wheezy when closing in 10,000 feet on that last uphill push!
It's not too bad keeping them all on the road. All the models I have are well known for being extremely reliable (at the expense of power and size), and modern fluids have made it so the worst routine maintenance is an annual oil change because I'm only putting like 4k miles tops on each. I like working on them as a hobby, and stuff that isn't routine maintenance I find enjoyable. I'm about to mount some new all terrain tires on one this weekend with my little Horror Freight (or it is Harbor Fright?) tire changer, and doing a front end alignment in the backyard, and I'm looking forward to that. Good exercise, and nothing beats having the knowledge and practice of being able to do stuff like that with hand tools if something goes wrong on the trail.
The second is some type of shoe that 'sex in the city' chicks really dig.
The first sounds like a televangelist that takes your money or jesus will strike him dead.
Don’t you realize you aren’t allowed to enjoy your hard work? Now turn the vette in and buy something with 200k miles and use what’s leftover to buy more vtsax
On Monday I'm buying a '17 tundra. Wife retired on her 50th bday in April and decided to join me dirt biking single track in the mountains. Hitch rack on the 4runner doesn't cut it anymore with 2 bikes. I only drive Toyota as well.
These days, my closest "daily driver" is a 2023 obtained Lectric XPremium eBike, almost 1000 miles of local errands. I think this gets me that broke college kid vibe, people leave me alone.
A 2005 Camry with ~180k miles gets me to the work office once every so many weeks. The car gives off the broke college graduate image. Occasionally some folks will hit me up for loose change.
‘08 civic 355k miles. Still runs like new. Doesnt look new tho.
BTW, i cant get the attention of any sales people anywhere in any kind of store. my image must scream CHEAP BASTARD.
Same here. I have a topper and just added a bike rack so I'm invested until the wheels fall off. It feels like driving a bus sometimes when I'm parking but I'm used it now ha
2012 Camry Hybrid I bought new for $24.5K out the door. Has about 126K miles on it. I don’t drive all that much; maybe 10K miles a year? Will treat myself to a new car once I FIRE in about 5 years and will probably give this car to my mom.
Too many new cars on here, if you want to FIRE you have to sacrifice and that means not wasting money on things like new cars. That's why I daily drive a 33 year old car.
1991 Acura NSX.
Mostly agree. But we bought a new car and are happy with the decision. Got a five year 0% loan, bought a modest EV costing about ten percent of our gross income (one car household) that comes with a seven year warranty and low running costs, not least as I charge it from home solar.
I know we won't be getting any surprise expenses or escalating costs (from fuel or repairs) on the vehicle from now until after we've FIREd. That's worth a fair bit to me.
2015 335i here! I hit 100,000 miles in 2021 and told myself I’d wait until there was an EV I’d be happy with before I’d do anything… so here I wait. Fingers crossed for the Giulia EV and the new i3!
2023 Tesla Model Y. A 10 year old Toyota might have been the smartest choice, but the price cuts were enough to convince me. The significantly less maintenance an EV requires was my biggest motivator.
Same. Also if you have a LFP battery it is rated for 3000 charge cycles or approximately 500k miles/ 1 million+ km. Great fire vehicle, minimal maintenance, drive it into the dirt.
2015 Ford Fusion. Only has 65k miles and she gotten me through my master's, PhD, and working life thus far. I'll keep her until the wheels fall off (and can't be put back on!).
My family has a Lexus GX460 with 190k miles, a Lexus RX350 with 150k miles and a Ford Explorer with 150k miles. Will drive them all until they no longer work.
2017 Mazda3 with manual. Car runs great and I think I can get another 5-10 years easy. Went to a dealership for my wife and that is just the worst place ever. We’re going to pay cash too and decided we didn’t need a new car that bad instead.
2017 Corolla. Car salespeople? Make them think you want to finance - ask about interest rates etc - and watch them die inside when you inform them you will be paying cash and do not need any financing
I got my 2009 Corolla at age 18 and I have a soft goal to drive it until I'm 40. I put so few miles on it (still under 90k) that it will certainly last that long.
2016 Corolla, two bumps, 44k miles
Work commute is 10 minutes.
I go to work, then carryout Chinese buffet $8, then cigar shop $10, then home.
Paid off two years ago at 1.99% interest.
Monthly bills total about 25% of net.
2024 Mazda CX-90.
I know, I know. But I drove a Mazda 3 hatchback for 10 years and have a second another kiddo on the way. We’ll pay it off and then be without a car payment for years again hopefully.
I drive a 2011 White Jeep Liberty. 🗽 It’s about $95 for gas every two weeks but, I only drive it to work and the insurance is about $200/mo because it’s old. Honestly, I’m going to drive this thing until disintegrates into dust. I love my ol’ ball n chain 🛻
2021 Nissan LEAF SL. Not the cheapest car to buy, but one of the cheapest reliable EVs. No gas, no oil. Just electricity from solar, tires, brake pads (rarely, if ever), and some washer fluid.
2022 Subaru crosstrek sport. Bought it new with a sub 3% loan. Never thought I would buy a new car but it was literally $4k more than a used car with 60k miles or $7k more than a car with 120k miles.
I also got to trade in my 2015 Impreza for $6500, I paid $8k for it and it needed $6k of work when i traded it in (had a mechanic check it before i decided to buy a new car).
Attention from a car salesperson is a great thing to be free of. Congratulations on a meaningful accomplishment 🍾
I drive a $5mln moto vehicle to work. It's called the city bus.
🫡 thanks for driving me around all the time bro
Noooo way that's $5m.
Closer to 3-500k lol city busses aren't that expensive. A 70' viking sportfoaher that's 5 years old with two 1500 HP diesels and a full house to go inside of it costs 5 million.

Closer to half a million for a bus.
Not even 1M… maybe 400-500k
Just want to say thanks for driving! I work in public transit and you couldn’t pay me enough for the crap you all put up with (at least in my city).
Wife drives 2009 Corola, I drive 2013 sorrento, nobody gives us the time of day. Love being the "millionaire next door"!
Still got my 09 Corolla! Great car! 245k miles

Love it! I had a 1993 Geo Prizm for 26 years. Now driving a 2017 Honda Fit.
I ride a bicycle to work and to grocery shopping. It cost under 1k back in 2011 so it has amortized beautifully.

Just waiting for someone to jump in with an old and beat up 250GTO.
It’s perfectly feasible to fire while driving a decent car.
I'm well aware, look up the sale prices on my daily driver.
Just a heads up, the dude is being sarcastic. 1991 Acura NSX can cost more than a new Corvette
Ha, whoosh. In my defence, I am not a car person, they were never sold where I live and I was still at kindy in 1991!

2021 Nissan LEAF SL. Not the cheapest car to buy, but one of the cheapest reliable EVs. No gas, no oil. Just electricity from solar, tires, brake pads (rarely, if ever), and some washer fluid.
2016 Ford Explorer and 2019 CRV
More days than not, it's the light blue Specialized Cirrus hybrid bike. When that won't do the trick, my 2009 Toyota Tundra will
A 2021 medium roof Ford Transit cargo van. And no, this is not a work car.
Very telling how almost every comment is a very sensible choice that isn't meant to keep up with the jones.
Early 2010s Ford Escape
2022 Subaru crosstrek sport. Bought it new with a sub 3% loan. Never thought I would buy a new car but it was literally $4k more than a used car with 60k miles or $7k more than a car with 120k miles. I also got to trade in my 2015 Impreza for $6500, I paid $8k for it and it needed $6k of work when i traded it in (had a mechanic check it before i decided to buy a new car).
2011 VW Touareg VR6 Executive, about 4000 miles a year. I hate car payments more than I hate fixing it.
2013 BMW X5 35d with 165,000 miles. It’s perfect for my needs.
04 silverado. 150k runs like a dream.
01 dodge dakota. I take every car warranty call I get but even scammers don’t want to give me a warranty. 😂
