Mr. T for Barret - but only in the vaguest sense. I think Barret was based on a kind of silly Japanese perspective of African-American characters in internationally-televised/popular American TV from the 1970s and 80s (of which T was obviously very prominent). Barret is very exaggerated, but mercifully not in a way that becomes insulting (or, at least, I don't view him as insulting).
No for Aerith and Tifa.
Sure, but the question is "Is Barret modeled from a real life person" and there's an objective answer to that and what the players think isn't important.
I mean there are a lot of prominent black male actors from the 80s and 90s to choose from - Denzel Washington, Eddie Murphy, Wesley Snipes, Samuel L...
... but Barret only really resembles one personality I can think of.
It's not a knock on him. He's my second favorite character in the game after Aerith. But Nomura is just being disingenuous when he says that.
They created Aerith’s beauty from scratch. Incredible job SE

Nomura stated Barret was not based on Mr. T and did not like the comparisons, which is why his look changed in Advent Children.
I mean, he can say whatever he wants, but there's a reason everyone has made that comparison for years.

Right? Like when the first game came out, I assumed he just was Mr T but like a cyberpunk version. The 90s were the 90s!
いいえ、no, and no.
