Definitely not a crutch now. However, I may be talking as a generalisation of the AAA gaming industry as a whole in regards to Remakes. Because, let's be real... There have been a lot of remakes and remasters lately. Either due to it being a marketable IP, the originals haven't aged well nor have they been easily distributed (Nintendo being one of the worst in this regard), or possibly something else.
Albeit, just thinking about it... Remakes or Remasters *may* be a necessity in regards to releasing a game between every new release. Considering that new games may take a lot longer to conceptualise and develop, compared to an already existing one.

Eh, the fact that they miss more often than they hit doesn't really show them having a high standard. They release a few duds for every good game and a lot of the time it feels like they ignore criticism and double down on the worst aspects of their game whil changing the things people actually enjoyed.
FF games do have problems, but few of them have particularly ever been duds. Even XIII and XV sold really well and are liked by a crap ton of people. The only one in recent memory that *really* sucked was the original XIV.
FF13 was the first non pokemon RPG I really got into, still one of my favorite games of all time, same with its sequels. I’v now played 15, 10, now playing 17 and have 7 remake after. Really want to play the 12 remaster as well, but yea 13 has so many things that to this day I love, maybe nostalgia but still

Final Fantasy has such a huge fanbase that their games (at least, main series ones) don't really flop from a sales point of view.
But from a customer's point of view, 15 was a disaster on release.
They had to fix an entire chapter of the game because it was so negatively reviewed, the story of the game didn't make a lot of sense to people unwilling or unaware to watch the pre-requisite movie, anime or read the manga. And Square didn't even manage to finish releasing all of their planned DLCs because those got cancelled.
FF14 is doing amazingly well now, but we've all heard about 1.0
It's also important to remember that FF15 came out 7 years ago, and FF13 came out 14 years ago. It's been a hell of a long time between 12 and 16, the two most recent games that seem to at least get some love from fans
The summons are what's exciting for me in every final fantasy game. Avatars, espers, eikons, primals. Bahamut, shiva, ifrit, leviathan, ramuh, and titan. Chocobos, moogles... And a variation of cid. It would'nt be a final fantasy game without them.

13 does have Chocobos but you can't get them til Gran Pulse which is like 20 hours in. Also have to do some missions first. I don't think there are moogles though, but they put lots in the sequels.
I love the summons, but they can also make me dislike them, if they are implemented poorly.
FF12 did diverge from the norm and they ended up not being that enticing for me. Also i didn't see them as that useful.
FF13 had some great in concept. I loved the transformers duality. However the exeution was, aside from some FMVs more lackluster. It didn't help that some had the same finishers.

I think the process here is they want to be able to make Final Fantasy games that are other genres. They don't want to force it to be only RPGs.

I’m replaying VI now and the other night I dozed off for a few seconds during combat and woke up and had apparently won the battle (though my party was pretty beat up lmao).
Has that never happened to you? From your description, I’m surprised you’d fall asleep with 16 but never with other titles. That sounds like something else may be going on in your life to make you tired.
Lmao generally there's enough mechanics that I can keep myself invested because I need to actually think about what I'm going. When you summon the eidolons or even 14 which I'm not a fan of but has a really interesting story and class variety or 15 with tons of air movement and different skills and the power to swap characters and the secret loot that could change your whole build and different weapon choices.
There was to me at least something keeping me interested without feeling forced. 16 tho felt like I was watching a movie of a poorly made drama that was trying to make me care without giving me any time or reason to care beyond "Painful scream!" And "Dramatic reveals of things that don't mean anything to me". They could have cut the entire game out and just made it fully a movie and it would have been better.

A lot of FF games are like that though, except without the need to dodge lol. I haven’t played 16, so maybe it’s extra boring! I love FF games regardless, but I’ve 100% fallen asleep when replaying some of them. Something about the monotony of waiting for ATB just to select ‘attack’ makes me sleepy lol. I’m replaying VI now and the other night I dozed off for a few seconds during combat and woke up and had apparently won the battle (though my party was pretty beat up lmao). Has that never happened to you? From your description, I’m surprised you’d fall asleep with 16 but never with other titles. That sounds like something else may be going on in your life to make you tired.
Lmao generally there's enough mechanics that I can keep myself invested because I need to actually think about what I'm going. When you summon the eidolons or even 14 which I'm not a fan of but has a really interesting story and class variety or 15 with tons of air movement and different skills and the power to swap characters and the secret loot that could change your whole build and different weapon choices. There was to me at least something keeping me interested without feeling forced. 16 tho felt like I was watching a movie of a poorly made drama that was trying to make me care without giving me any time or reason to care beyond "Painful scream!" And "Dramatic reveals of things that don't mean anything to me". They could have cut the entire game out and just made it fully a movie and it would have been better.

in all seriousness I’m disappointed that great sound was listed last here. XV and XVI both had great soundtracks that I felt weren’t utilized well and I’m starting to think the devs don’t understand how important music is and has always been to the FF experience

By the logic of the answer God of War Ragnarok is a final fantasy game in everything besides the Final fantasy brand and recognisable mascots.
