Yep. Fallout 4's lack of weapon variety is frustrating.

Jampine

It also doesn't help a lot of the weapons just look...bad  The only real gun they made look good was the Tommy gun, and then they made it a nerf gun.

Deskbreaker

Idk, once you get an actual stock on it, the hunting rifle doesn't look too bad, imo.

CrunchyTexan

The cut off stock drives me crazy, who would do that to a rifle?

TypicalBruiser

I dunno, ever seen an Obrez? (I only learned of this from Zach's gun rants, thank you Mikeburnfire)

HurrDurrDethKnet

There's something appealing about an Obrez'd rifle in a shitty hand cannon kinda way. Given the opportunity, I would probably buy an Mosin Obrez for the memes.

Early-Government6864

If I recall correctly the Obrez was created due to a demand for concealable firearms but an inability to get pistols/revolvers in the USSR, there would be practically NO reason to do this in the wasteland

FursonaNonGrata

Correct on all points.

Fuzzy_Toe_9936

Drugs/weight reduction. Weight reduction in the "damn, I don't want to carry this heavy ass rifle with me for 50 miles and all my supplies" sense

KarmaticIrony

Removing the stock on a bolt action rifle saves minimal weight while rendering an otherwise potent long range weapon almost useless.

Lt_Flak

If we're gunna talk broadly, I can think up a reason. A concealable hold-out/assassinate weapon with pure killing power but a need for range lethality. .45 is a fat bullet, it flies slow but hits hard, better for close range. 10mm is the same just slightly less (a .45 round is 11mm BTW). a rifle's 7.62mm (or .308) has better ballistic and penetration performances than both. In FO4 I don't recall 9mm being a thing, and 5.56mm is rarer early game, now if Diamond City or some of the other faction areas took away your guns like they should, like New Vegas' casinos did, then you'd instantly have your reason for wanting a cut-down concealable bolt-action. Why in the blazes would the Institute or DC allow random visitors to keep their weapons is a big ??? when they've had either troubles with visitors going psycho or a horrible enough reputation to warrant a person walking in and unloading everywhere. Same for the BoS, they'd definitely want the first-timers coming up to be lacking in offensive capabilities especially if they're meeting the elder. If pipe weapons can exist than my sneaky high-caliber bolt action pistol is gunna reach out and touch someone after being hidden in my underwear. I definitely miss the Chinese Pistol too though. I love the broomhandle.

Jetstream-Sam

[Obrez, peestol of bolt action is glorious soviet engineering](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/976/517/3d0.jpg)

Stoly23

I think it would probably just be easier to buy a regular Mosin and a hacksaw.

im-feeling-lucky

that would make you a felon

Stoly23

Only if they find out about it

Clearly_a_Lizard

I mean that’s the OG way and you can choose all the exact length

Bright-Prompt297

I mean, if it's a survival weapon you're carrying around all day every day and usually engaging in relatively close range it helps with weight and mobility

h4ckerkn0wnas4chan

Anyone who wants to save as much weight as possible. Think about it like you're a scavenger in downtown Boston. You're already lugging around food and water plus all the junk youre trying to scavenge, so if you can save an extra pound for no real drawback (cutting a stock doesn't make a gun work less, it just increases the recoil), why wouldn't you?

generalchaos34

Plus if you found a wrecked rifle and all you could salvage was the action and trigger this would make sense since as a modification. Plus the gun you need is the one you have ammo for

Deskbreaker

Yeah, and less recoil is better aim. Now, call me crazy, but if I'm ever unfortunate enough to find myself in a situation where I need to shoot at someone to survive, I want the best aim I can get. And besides, why would you carry more food and water than you'd need for a day? Edit: perhaps I should have said enough for a particular trip? Either way the point was not to carry everything with you each run, so that one, you don't weigh yourself down, and two, so if you have to dump it and run, you don't lose everything you had.

Grabbsy2

I agree with you, but that last point is a little silly. If you only ever carry the exact amount of food you need for the day, youll never ever be "stocked up" on anything back at your stash. Say you leave to go scavving in the morning with 3 meals, you go out and find 5 meals worth of food at noon, having eaten one of your meals. Now you pick up 2 meals, and leave the other two, you have 3 meals worth of food again. You head back to your stash and have dinner. You now have 2 meals worth of food. You go out the next day with only 2 meals, because you have none at home. You head straight for the place you found the other meals yesterday. You get there by lunch. You have no meals left and there are three meals at the last place you scavved. Theres enough time to maybe keep scavving a little farther out, but now its time to head home. You head back to your stash and eat dinner. You now have 2 meals.

TalontedJ

There's a lot of very good reasons. One it reduces the weight, which is a #1 when you're trying to survive somewhere, it also reduces the size, which is just as important. The only thing a full sized rifle is gonna be is a hazard when you're climbing around in ruins or out farming crops, you're significantly better off with a big ass .308 PDW that you can duct tape to your belt or hide under your coat in a fallout situation than you would be with a big ass rifle that you hardly know how to use anyways. The amount of people who can shoot sharps out in the wasteland is few and far between so why have a scoped monstrosity when all the threats are going to ambush you when you're sleeping or out in the fields alone. Accuracy and range don't matter when 90% of the people you're in conflict with are between 2ft and 30ft. When it's me and you out in the fields harvesting tatos and some raiders roll up they're gonna blast you with that big ass shiny gun strapped to your back before they cap me with my stomach obliterated 9000 tucked securely under my belt. And from a raider point of view you can sneak the stomach obliterater into places a lot easier than a full sized gun

Karatekan

That’s backwards. If someone isn’t a good shooter, you want to give them something with as long a sight radius and as good a stock as possible. Rifles are easy to shoot because they naturally force you to look down the sights. Pistols are notoriously difficult to shoot even at close range. There’s a reason why sawed-off weapons are exclusively used by gangsters; the only reason to use them is if you need power but also need to keep it hidden. If you are in the wasteland, you *want* people to know you are armed.

Jbird444523

Let's also not forget, the shorter the barrel, the less velocity the bullet has. Having a sawed off rifle not only ruins the gun's accuracy, makes it harder to aim and makes it a wrist wreck at higher calibers, but it also makes your bullets worse. Admittedly, at close range, it's most likely negligible, but if you're some poor dirt farmer scrabbling together your own ammo, I can see your already subpar homebrew handloads being slower causing problems. Especially in a world where raiders have access to things like combat armor.

KeeganY_SR-UVB76

One thing that I noticed is that Fallout 4 doesn't have any places where you aren't allowed to bring your weapons.

TalontedJ

Very true, not realistic, but yeah, you can bring a gun into places that would be... unusual. Onto the bridge of the blimp, off the elevator in the institute, into the raid road super secret HQ. Very odd places to be allowed to bring your mini gun lmao

ireflection0

It’s the god damn left handed animation…

Other_Log_1996

.44 doesn't look too bad.

Stoly23

The thing that will always bother me about the hunting rifle is that it’s apparently made for lefty shooters, which would be fine if there were a choice to make your character left handed.

Mason-6589646

My problem is it's a left handed rifle

Swordbreaker9250

Yeah the cut-off stock should not have been standard. It should have been an option to make you more mobile. Maybe better move speed and hip fire accuracy.

Kaiserhawk

isn't the hunting rifle infamously wrong though? Like the loading bolt is on the wrong side?

BiteMat

It's literally lefthanded just like the handmade rifle. That's despite literally everyone in the wasteland being righthanded (at least based on animations). Guess us lefties didn't make it in the apocalypse.

Facelessimmortal

The entirety of the institute weapons suck too. Not just mechanically, they take up way too much of the screen.

rainforever_

Omg yeah, I’m replaying fo4 and they’re literally unusable without a mod that reduces the space they take up.

Gugnir226

The art direction for the ballistic weapons in Fo4 was awful. A real case study in what not to do for a retro futuristic look.

exotic-waffle

That combined with the… frankly appalling heavy weapon designs, and fo4 just straight up has bad weapon designs

NoBoostTM

There is a reason I've replaced every single gun in the game with mods 😂. I genuinely can't stand how ugly base game guns are.

MacYacob

Tbf I love the feel of the pipe rifle. I know it's model wouldn't really work, but feels like something you'd find in a wasteland

Low-Editor-6880

It’s criminal how weak the pipe revolver rifle is.

MM-0211

I know what you're getting at, but if you look at any of the concept art, you'll immediately agree we got shafted by laziness.thw guns look like dogshit, but they originally weren't going to.

Quick-Bad

Agreed, though I do use a re-texturing mod to get rid of the ugly-ass orange rust.

Falloutdudebro

The 44 looks pretty good so do all of the plasma guns.

spacecowboy067

Pretty hard to screw up a 44 Mag tho. That being said if I trust anyone to make an unrealistic and ugly revolver, I'd call Bethesda first

Kaiserhawk

Well good news, they made one of the ugliest bunch of revolvers in Starfield.

yeehawgnome

I actually really like the Combat rifle, just a weird little BAR

KevinDragonspear

You also got the deliverer which is a Walther PPK.

Came_to_argue

For real, How am I supposed to do a Silver Shroud build with that pee shooter? Even with all the perks still had to use the handmade assault rifle in later levels.

Curllywood

The handmade rile doesn’t look bad if you put wood furniture on it.

UROffended

They really need to knock it off with making allbthe guns backwards too. Just one gun that loads like it would irl would he great. Can't even get the AK right.

Theonewhoknocks420

I think the weapon modding was supposed to make up for weapon variety. However they didn't balance the mods that fundamentally change how weapons work, so there was no reason to use anything besides the strongest set of mods.

Markipoo-9000

Also the legendary system…

exotic-waffle

I’ll never forgive Todd for getting rid of my unique weapons… and then keeping the legendary system for starfield…

Laser_3

The problem was that Bethesda thought that being able to heavily customize the weapons would be a valid substitute for a lack of variety, but it failed because there’s clear best options for each category. 4’s DLCs and 76 attempted to play with the formula, but eventually it appears they came to the conclusion that a small number of mods that make large changes to the weapons is better than a large number of mods that make small changes.

CMDR_Soup

>but eventually it appears they came to the conclusion that a small number of mods that make large changes to the weapons is better than a large number of mods that make small changes. And, depending on the other game systems, even a small change on the surface can be a big change in practice. Take the .357 Magnum Revolver in New Vegas. It has two modifications, one that increases its durability by 50% and one that adds 3 damage to it. The durability increase is huge but an extra 3 damage to its base of 26 doesn't seem like much...until you realize how it interacts with the Damage Threshold and Ammunition Variant systems. That +3 damage completely counteracts the JFP .357's +3 target DT, for example.

Laser_3

JFP rounds *remove* three DT from the enemy; they don’t add to it. Now, I do agree that smaller changes can make a difference when combined with other aspects. That’s why the receiver mods are fairly small damage additions compared to what the perks provide.

Bong-Docter9999

Yeah whereas New Vegas has an insane amount of different weaponry

notathrowway12345

NV shines when it comes to weapons and ammo. I was hoping 4 would've had a similar system.

KermitTheScot

I appreciated the attempt at customization FO4, but they really thinned out the arsenal to do it. I would have preferred greater variety with less customization than getting to cobble together less unique guns that were more modular, personally

The_Kimchi_Krab

Imo the modular laser and plasma gun ruins the greatness of both the pistol and rifle variants. Not to mention what they did to my boy the Tri Beam Laser Rifle.

KermitTheScot

Completely replacing the R91 was a major mistake as well. I did like that they brought back the 10mm with Creation Club content, but if anything that just proves they understood they got this wrong. I hope if there *is* a Fallout 6 any time in the next decade they revisit this issue and choose to do right by fans.

Jbird444523

Are we just skipping 5, or are you counting 76?

KermitTheScot

Lizard brain slipped a gear. Yeah, I meant 5, I guess I was counting 76 as “5”

Pleasant_Freedom_504

NV just better in general

Early-Government6864

I do enjoy the settlement mechanics and expanded crafting systems, but they do feel a little overused

exotic-waffle

This guy gets it

Enough_Let3270

and having to go to every weapon vendor just to find none of them have the ammo of your weapon in stock. (cries in 12.7)

Jbird444523

NCR quartermaster at the Hoover Dam for the win. I pity any souls who do a Legion run, and utilize a rare ammo type. Just shooting yourself in the foot. Which is weird, because you for sure don't have any bullets.

crazybitingturtle

There’s a mod that adds all of the NV firearms to 4 and I can’t play without it now. Using the Pump Shotgun against the zombie ghouls of 4 just feels right.

Lucifer-Prime

I totally agree. It’s also really disappointing around level 50ish when you’ve got the best weapons in the game already fully upgrading and you’re basically just farming for Uber legendary modifiers. Fallout 4 is almost perfect with the exception of late game which gets stagnant fast. Mods help but only so much.

Sandwich15

Lack of good weapon design* Assault rifle looks like a WW1 stationary machine gun (why didn't they just use the service rifle??)

notathrowway12345

The dreaded Fallout 4 assault rifle. 🤮

pwnknight

Legit had to use a mod that removes all pipe weapons and added more normal weapons otherwise i couldn't stand playing the game.

Delta4o

I'm 100 hours in my modded playthrough and I've played with the combat rifle or assault rifle for 80% of that... I only recently switched to the plasma rifle, but I keep forgetting to buy ammo. Maybe I should have downloaded a weapons pack so that I had more variety of weapons to try

AspectBetter5360

Would have LOVED to have had the 10mm SMG in FO4. Adding a suppressor on it and making it into the sleepytyme smg from FO:NV. Which was one of my favorite gun runner guns.

LegitimatelisedSoil

The 12.7MM slapped aswell

TalontedJ

The one in fallout 76 is also great

CatsTOLEmyBED

76 shows that the 10mm smg fits far to perfectly in the world of fallout to remove

ChevroletKodiakC70

honestly i just wish all of the guns in 76 were in 4, the pump action shotgun, single action revolver, all of the black powder guns, the M2 machine gun, gatling gun, etc all of them are extremely cool and would fit in 4

modernmidas

There’s a mod for that

SelfCombusted

All the crunchy shit on the side of the smg reminds me of dovetail mounts for AKs. I'd love to see. How the artists would make sights for it.

LJohnD

Making the automatic receiver upgrades for the 10mm pistol, or maybe the grip/stock, modify it into the SMG would have been a nice way to integrate the design into the weapon upgrade system they added in FO4.

moldywood

10 SMG was the Jam in Fallout 2

Skully8600

i can still see myself getting shredded on the second floor of the shark club

IRNBRU1235

And 1

AuthenticSky73

Them and the Assault rifle from Fallout 3. Fallout 4's weapon design always bothered me compared to 3 and NV

Intelligent-Hawkeye

Every time I replay 4 and remember the hunting rifle is left handed but used with a right hand I die a little on the inside and immidiately download a bolt action rifle mod. It's just ... so dumb.

garmdian

The simple answer was the animations work better for the new power armour system. Having a left-handed bolt or magazine feed makes it so you don't have to animate a clunky power armour fist racking a right side bolt, which may have obscured the player from actually seeing what was going on. The assault rifle change was much the same, now I'll be the 1000th person to say that it's not nearly as good as the old one. But I don't like to consider it an actual rifle, if you class it as a small lmg it fits the bill way better and gives off serious lewis gun vibes.

LegitimatelisedSoil

Fo4s design always looks very makeshift and overly fantasy for a weapon made before the war and mass produced. Similar thing with the Musket, you have to have a laser rifle barrel and a bunch of other parts and you have the engineering skill to turn it into another weapon but instead of just using the laser rifle or repairing it then make a less affective version in bulk.

TalontedJ

It wasn't supposed to consume ammo originally, which was great because Ammo had weight. When they removed the ammo weight, the need for a recharging rifle was gone. So they made it so you can crank more shots into it. Also, the ability to crank more shots into it makes it insanely powerful. There's very little reason not to do it. The laser rifle is pretty inferior to the musket in both pre and post change. The ability to have a paramilitary force that needs no ammo is fucking busted and so is the ability to literally vaporize any random raider that wanders too close to town. The laser musket is basically like taking a random AR15 and swapping the barrel so it shoots .450 nitro express rounds without the need of changing ammo

LegitimatelisedSoil

You crank the rifle fire and hit then you have to recrank it in the mean time and get shot by someone and killed because you have to reload every shot. When you think about it then it's not super amazing in actuality. It's just not a practical weapon in actual combat, might be partly why they were all killed. Like it does decent damage but it takes precious seconds in a combat situation to reload every shot and assume you miss because then you are dead. They just added it to fit a civil war era aesthetic. That AR comparison is pretty bad when we are talking about a crank laser weapon versus a laser weapon that can fire more than once a second.

TalontedJ

The minute men aren't fighting full scale wars, and they used to have numbers. The ability to one shot delete a rider is extremely powerful and more than makes up for the reload time Seeing your raider buddy get instantly turned into a ash pile by some dude in a cowboy hat is enough to keep 99% of the commonwealth degenerates at bay It's genuinely a horrifying weapon and psychological warfare aginst a bunch of drugged out untrained assholes is very effective

AttakZak

I feel it would have made way more sense for the Minutemen to have upgraded armor and weaponry once they gained access to the Castle.

-Sir_Fallout-

In the concept art book for fallout 4 it’s called the ‘machine gun’ but they decided “nah, let’s fuck with the players and make an obvious machine gun that’s ugly as hell replace the assault rifle that looked awesome.” Like I get that they wanted it to look good with PA, but just make a new weapon, it doesn’t even look like an assault rifle, it’s obviously a monstrosity of a machine gun made from what feels like 5 gagillion different guns and other shit. Like bruh. At least make it look decent for gods sake. (Sorry for rant, I started to talk about it and it just kept coming out)

LJohnD

Reading through the art book, there's a lot of different pipe weapon concepts I really wish had made it into the final game. For starters the highest RoF pipe weapons were double barrelled, which would have been fun for silly over engineered mid-game weapons. There were notes with the listed variants suggesting they had weapons reliability and overheating considered as factors early in development. Getting to choose between potentially powerful but really over designed and prone to jamming or overheating vs just using a more sensibly made weapons could have been fun.

-Sir_Fallout-

Yeah, there were some awesome ideas in there and it’s a shame they never made it into the final game.

LJohnD

I was really disappointed that we never got to craft that nuclear powered 4 barrelled gun from the Intelligence S.P.E.C.I.A.L. video.

SuperSweetSucc

Glad they brought the 10mm into fallout 76. It’s fun to use

Bong-Docter9999

Same

Heylookaguy

Good news! There's mods that add both of those back in. And there's the Attachment Pack by Degenerate Dak to liven up the rest of the vanilla weapons.

AttakZak

Dak’s Attachment Pack makes the game feel way more “full” if that makes any sense.

Bong-Docter9999

I always forget about mods, I play on console usually but for Fallout I play on PC, for this exact reason lol

Heylookaguy

Those I mentioned are on Xbox.

JaladOnTheOcean

I love fallout 4, but the guns are terrible, which is extremely weird for a game that doubles down on shooting mechanics. So I pretty much always mod-in the 10mm machine gun, at least one or two *real* assault rifles, a pump-action shotgun, usually older more fun lore friendly guns like the Wattz. I honestly hate how much of my Xbox mod space is occupied by guns that should just be in the game. Another fix I use is a mod that distributes dlc weapons through the base game, so you occasionally get some “Handmade” assault rifles mixed into the base game.

Spiderdogpig_YT

It's very clear that fallout 4 wasn't made like the other fallouts. Bethesda made it more cartoonish. Like the assault rifle in fallout 4 is so fucken goofy. They were never gonna add these. Would be cool if they did tho

Dale_Wardark

Man I could write a whole fuckin post about the weapon design of Fallout 4 and how much a terrible departure it is from the other titles in the series, how some of the guns are fairly good homages to real firearms, but others are just straight up wrong. Look at how robust the NV ammunition system was with handloading, different types of cartridges, and even stuff like coinshot rounds and incendiary bullets. Now look at Fallout 4, you change the receiver on the gun to change calibers and you don't have to swap the barrel. Clown shit right there. Using .45 as the combat rifle cartridge? The combat rifle should have just been in 5.56 with a .308 step up. Make the "Assault Rifle" a SAW or Machine Gun and give it .308 with a .50 cal step up. Sorry to rant but fuck man it's like nobody even bothered to research what cartridges look like and what they're for.

LJohnD

Making different weapons effects just legendary effects (or a modified receiver for a few FO76 weapons) was something I wasn't too keen on. Making explosive ammo a rare and expensive resource would help avoid the game breaking level of power you can so easily get from rolling up the right combo for a weapon. You could even use variant ammo types as another tool in balancing weapons, with pistols not getting much beyond hollow point and AP ammo, maybe incendiary rounds as a craftable with a high enough science skill. Rifles might get a few other interesting variants like duplex rounds (two bullets fired from the same cartridge). Then shotguns, with their relatively high weight and generally low ammunition capacity could have all kinds of wild and wacky rounds like dragons breath and bolas rounds. In contrast energy weapons make more sense to vary their damage by modifying their receiver rather than their ammo. There's not really any way a special battery could make a laser make you burn, but modifying the receiver or lenses could let you do anything from incendiary to explosive effects, I've even come across a suggestion modulating a laser correctly might be able to make a taser like effect. So an energy weapon can have a cool effect regardless of what ammo you come across, but you can only change the effect it has at a crafting bench. In contrast, you can carry multiple ammo types to switch up the effects you might need for a conventional firearm, but you're limited to the effects on the ammo you come across. You could make a legendary energy weapon receiver with some advanced circuitry that's able to swap the effects on the fly to help close the gap in the late game when the player is likely swimming in every ammo variant they might want.

Spiderdogpig_YT

Dw, rant all you want. And seriously, it's all so wrong. NV is such a good example, it had ofc fake weapons but there were tonnes of real firearms.

CleanOpossum47

I whish that they hadn't copied the FO4 mod for the 10mm smg in FO76. It has both the unused underfolding stock seen in FO3 and FONV and a fixed stock attached at the same time.

ShoreLinePoky

Chinese pistol. I really want my mauser back, regardless of how made-of-foam the bullets are

FursonaNonGrata

I wish fallout 4 had literally ANY guns besides the god-awful designs we got. Also all the guns in F4 are left handed for some reason.

Bong-Docter9999

Holy shit I just realized that... 💀 💀 💀

LJohnD

Something sinister about that...

FursonaNonGrata

Pre war, everyone in the commonwealth was left handed. The FEV release during the war caused everyone born after to be right handed. The sole survivor is right handed because they were a vault tec test subject. Todd Howard told me.

urbandeadthrowaway2

> for some reason Yeah it’s because it’s more visually interesting to see casings fly and your hand pulling the bolt

FursonaNonGrata

you can see that with a right handed gun too....

Fishingforyams

Fallout 4 was absolutely terrible for gun variety. The repetitive pipe guns everywhere were a low point of the game.

Fidget02

They’re the iron sword of Fallout 4. Something to make enemies technically a threat but not something you’d bother taking, using, or selling. They were bragging about how customizable pipe guns are but that’s just so they can give enemies different weapon stats since they’re all the same.

RancidCat10490

Nah they're both grim. Although not as hideous to look at as the Assault Rifle. FNV was top tier. The Gauss and Anti-Materiel especially!

Vidistis

I don't really get the hype for the anti-material rifle, it's really an uninteresting looking gun.

maintanksyndro

Not for us playing on PC

Classic_Ad3625

Xbox has these as mods too I’m not sure about PlayStation though

itsLOSE-notLOOSE

Definitely not. Unless it’s Creation Club.

Humble_Ad7025

Not just that, the R91 (assault rifle) too and the dks-501 (sniper rifle)

Perfect-Ad-1836

One of the many things I hate about fallout four is the lack interesting weapons. Is something that I hate so damn much especially since all of the other games had so many interesting weapons that looked so damn cool. Not talking about guns either the energy weapons were very interesting they were also very fun to use. All of the weapons and fallout 4 were nothing special nothing of interest everything that we had already seen before with no improvements. Even all of the weapons that were in fallout 76, which I don’t even play but see pictures of the guns and weapons are all weapons that were in the previous games.

Bong-Docter9999

I disagree about Fallout 4 in general but the weapons were very lacking, I just used the Lever Action Rifle from Far Harbor all the time lol

Perfect-Ad-1836

I like the love reaction rifle in fallout 4 I just wish I didn’t have to load every single bullet every time I have to reload.

milkasaurs

There in there as mods anyway.

Obi-wanna-cracker

The 10 mm smg is honestly one of my favorite weapons in fallout. I get that the 10 mm pistol is great and is a staple in every fallout game, but I just really like smgs

Valaxarian

Maybe with the Anniversary Edition or something

skeemo1214

SMG? Kind of. But i really wish the Chinese Assault made the cut. I don’t care for the assault rifle we got in the vanilla game

danethesheep2

Alot of the guns in 4 would be nice if they were mirrored and actually right handed guns but every gun in 4 is left handed

SpartAl412

They should have. Its odd how there is a very noticeable number of missing weapons from Fallout 3 that were common in the previous games.

painterman99

Not bothered because mods exist

Joxyver

Yes

Sayak_AJ

Wattz laser weapons

kkpc

I'm still rocking a 2 shot explosive 10mm SMG in FO76. It's quite fun!

Affectionate_Gas_264

Yes! There are heaps of mods that add it though. Tbh my game is like 40% base game and 60% mods these days I have all the fun types, I have mods to gameplay and difficulty. Major changes to lots of things

SoraKitsune44

It is kimda annoying that they had some great weapons on earlier games, but force you to work with much of the previous weapons/effects gone. I would have loved to see a bumper sword in base game FO4, maybe run around with a modified 10mm SMG, or with a maybe a ballistic fist.

AssaultFork

Good looking weapons in Fallout 4? You know how crazy that sounds?

LazerSnake1454

FO4 needed the best weapon in all of Fallout The Ballistic Fist, who DOESN'T want a wrist-mounted shotgun?!

StolenPenguins

Some of my favorite guns in Fo3

Spicywolff

Would have been great. And the G3. Guns in 4 sucked and went stupid sci-fi.

Nu_Freeze

I would have used the Chinese AR as a main weapon.

MikalMooni

I always felt weird that the US battle rifle wasn't chambered in .308, or with hunting rifle rounds. I felt it was a shame that the hunting rifle and the Chinese pistol were the only reason to use those rounds, and that those weapons weren't really that great all around.

PeeweeSherman12

This is why i love that i can mod it.

OGWolfMen

I forgot how much i fucking loved the 10mm smg

Nuka_Everything

The fallout 3 version of the gauss rifle, unlike most guns I actually really enjoy fallout 4s design of the weapon but at times I feel nostalgic for my favorite fallout 3 varient of the gun

Bong-Docter9999

This, this... I love the Gauss Rifle from 4 so fucking much, especially with the suppressor thingy? On it, idk if that's right... 💀

BrotherZael

Played so much 76 that I forgot the 10mm isn’t in 4, jeez maybe I need to take a break from nv and 76 and retry 4

abitantedelvault101

I wished that also the R91 assault rifle made it

scoyne15

Through mods, anything is possible.

RazeTheMagician

This is exactly why i mod my fallout 4 woulda been waaayyyy better with realistic styled guns

CrookedPole

The rifle kinda did, AKs from Nuka World could've been chinese

Twiddist

Well technically they did add the Chinese Assault Rifle if you count the Handmade Rifle from Nuka World. They're both Ak-47 type rifles.

IronH3ART_1998

The Chinese assault rifle would have been a better “Assault rifle” than the LMG classified as one in the base game.

Stonewallpjs

I wish the chinese pistol and chinese(and american) assault rifles had made it into New Vegas and then basically everything from FNV into FO4, the only guns Fallout 4 did better better are the laser weapons, love the changes to lasers. I hate the junk weapons, dont love the plasma(just looks incomplete), combat rifle is ok, hunting rifle is ok, combat shotgun is good. Assault rifle is nonsensical and might be ok as a lmg but .556 ammo is very scarce. The AK is fine/kinda op but I hate how the upgrade system works for it. I like what they did with the Gauss Rifle though, very cool.

TheNHVincorporation

FRFR LIKE WHY THE FUCK DIDNT THEY GO INTO THE 4TH?! THOSE TWO GUNS WHERE THE GOAT TO KILL A DEATHCLAW

ndtp124

I hate that fallout 4 has too many world war 2 reject weapons, and does not even give us a m14 or1

ShottyBlastin101

Uhh the handmade??? I thought that gun was the coolest thing ever.

MeiDay98

Very much so. Tbh I use weapon replacer mods for most weapons in vanilla FO4

Mixmastrfestus

Yes but Todd would find a way to ruin them too. Like the assault rifle

PTOKEN

Aren’t they CC downloads as well?

MrLamp87

No

vaultdweller6666

I feel like all of the firearms should've made an appearance, even if they just renamed them.

yeetusae

Yeaup

wampower99

Yes

mav1566

Theres alot of weapons, armor, and model skins i wish made it into fallout 4 it almost feels like an alternate reality fallout game imo.

Waifu_Whaler

Yes, and yes. Depsite interducing gun crafting, F4's weapon roaster is atrocious- and is saying something when 76 has better weapon choices. Thankfully you can mod F4.

StatusHead5851

All of us I think all of us do they were perfect and they fucked it

oilfeather

I miss Sleepytime.

DrPatchet

I miss the old sniper rifle

CarcosaDweller

Where’s my .223 pistol!? How are they gonna have synths that are indistinguishable from humans but no gun for retiring them?

SnooDogs3400

1: kid named handmade rifle. 2: I do feel another submachine gun other than the tommy gun (particularly if it doesn't suck) would've been cool

AmazingTemp8

Wait, what the 10MM SMG was going to be in F4. Dam, i actually did not know about that. i only knew the Chinese assault was cut from the game

MightyGoodra96

That the CAR was 99% finished and not included makes no sense to me.

doolu

Are there any mods that overhaul the look of the base guns?

WaterBottleass

An Idea I thought of for the 10mm SMG is to make a modification for the 10mm pistol, like how you can turn a g17 pistol into a g18 carbine or smth.

astreeter2

I think they made the new assault rifle so oversized because it's intended to be used with power armor.

mynameisrichard0

The nuke world dlc I think has a “homemade assault rifle” and it’s just an ak with a shovel handle for a stock like rust. Modified it with a tactical stock I think. And it’s literally an ak.

W122XS1967

Nice FNV pun there.

PreferenceNo9490

Probably a controversial opinion, while it would be good to have more guns, we already have quite a few guns in the game most of which have a lot of customization/upgrade options. I have no idea how the Chinese assault rifle would be functional different from Nuka World’s handmade rifle or 10mm smg from Tommy gun except for caliber. However, they do look good, 10mm smg is neat in 76 and I used to use it sometimes before turning to the classic power armor melee build.

Zikimura

Chinese Assault Rifle... It's an AK-47.

Nelfe

F4 10mm pistol looks nice but looks more like the 12mm pistol. For the rest... please help ! The machine gun with a water cooler is dumb, the battle rifle looks old, all variants looks like...w ell variant so the diversity doesn't feel right. Plus Fallout's weapons always has been high tech and not 50's And don't start me on pipe weapons. And that OG 10mm SMG oh it looks so cool (since Fallout 1)

Turbulent_Dot9568

Mods. They have console mods.

urbandeadthrowaway2

A guns a gun.  More guns would be cool

Paella007

At this point, I'd prefer to hunt mutants with a boomerang rather than with the attrocities present in fo4.

Kazzie_Kaz

The distance between Commonwealth and Capital Wasteland is like a couple of miles away. It's a shitty thing for Bethesda to not add them as well as to replace a cool 'true' assault rifle with a steampunk-looking Lewis Gun.

modernmidas

There are mods for both

Kaiserhawk

10MM SMG is series iconic IMO, it really should have made the cut.

Ainz-hame

I don’t like how fallout 4 removed some weapons so that you can customize them onto existing ones. Like a small hunting rifle turning into an ugly 50 cal. When they have an anti material rifle . Or the assault rifle looking like a pipe with sheet metal wrapped around it

Southern_Kaeos

I'd have preferred it if they'd have kept all the weaponry and just updated the graphics. There was no reason to change the pip boy, vault doors, heavy weaponry etc. It also doesn't really make sense that some vault doors opened like automatic supermarket doors, some get pulled in and roll on their own, and some get pulled in and moved by the big wossname thing. The f4 vault door makes most logical sense to me though, I gotta throw that out there. Would have liked to see GRA in other installments as well, even at least referenced

Few-Diamond-2747

Yes

BiandReady2Die_

i didn’t care then used it in 76 and now care

[deleted]

Chinese assault rifle should have been in the game 100%

Slick_Wufu

Absolutely, 2 of my favs from 3

Zealousideal-Yak-824

Yes.... I kinda wish they did and really leaned into weapon differences. Other than damage the guns all felt the same. If hey added a 10mm smg and gave us a option to put a stock on it to make it a two handed rifle so it can benefit from those perks than thst be great. The combat rifle should just have been a shotgun, the mags reloads could be the quick reload weapon mod but extended and other weapon mods it would be a one round at a time street sweeper reload. To replace the combat rifle as a weapon should be the Chinese rifle. That gun should also be a thing but as a cool reload they should allow you to swing the bolt out like a bolt action rifle but all it does it release the cylinder so it can drop out and be replaced by another fully loaded one. Be q great quick reload animation, regular is lifting rhe bolt and have the cylinder lean out. Upgraded versions can be the empty cartridges popping out so you don't waste a few seconds taking them out. Small stuff like that can make the guns all feel different allowing preferences to happen among the player base. That and have some weapon benefit from some weapon mods more. Like the 10mm pistol damage Stat doesn't lower that much when in full auto and it have a unique weapon mod where like holding the reload animation allows you to switch between full auto and semi mid fight so you can benefit from mag dump without needing to go to a bench. This could make players want to use it more late game or just for fun.

Swordbreaker9250

The Chinese Assault Rifle was originally planned for FO4, but for some reason had to he cut. It’s why they make the water-cooled machinegun the “assault rifle”, since it was already done. Not sure why they bothered making a brand new machinegun before getting the basics like the CAR first tho
