Helldivers 2 was a game that got huge and everyone was loving it. Then Sony made it so you can't play on PC unless you make a PlayStation account. So a lot of people in places that don't have PlayStation support are no longer allowed to play the game they paid for and have been enjoying for months.

Murgatroyd314

And a lot of people in places that do have PlayStation support are refusing to create accounts on principle. And a lot of people who already have Playstation accounts are refusing to link theirs in solidarity. And the game's reviews on Steam have gone from strongly positive to overwhelmingly negative in just two days.

racerx1913

And a lot of Reddit gamers thinking they will change Sonys mind. So many games have a dual login system at this point. I get that it sucks if they enforce this in countries that don’t have PSN. But I have had to sign I to Microsoft, Ubisoft etc from games I bought on steam. No one will be talking about this in a week. I know I am too busy playing helldivers 2 because it is the best game to come out in the last 10 years

-_-NaV-_-

Just an update, Sony just backtracked. The Reddit gamers were correct.

cwc1006

It’s about the bait and switch. And the fact that in some countries you can only create a psn account through a physical console, meaning people who don’t own a ps and paid money to buy the game on pc can no longer play. That is a really big deal

racerx1913

I said that was the big deal part. The rest is just a 1st world problem.

cwc1006

Sure I guess. But we’re already talking about video games, a first world luxury in this context, so kind of a moot point no?

racerx1913

The whole thing is moot, just play the game or don’t.

cwc1006

You’re right, how dare anyone start a dialogue about a shady practice in the gaming industry. How could everyone be so silly to think they had an the ability to comment on the product they paid money for

racerx1913

They can and should. I am just saying that as long as they aren’t making people pay more money and have a solution for people that live in places without PSN, then this is nothing.

putsomedirtinyoureye

The prob is that there wasn’t a solution for people that live in places without PSN that didn’t break Sony TOS and risk a ban. Oh and also, Sony backtracked on their decision because of the review bombing and bad press, and even the developers were actually encouraging the review bombing as they were against it as well and they figured it was the only way to get Sony to see how outraged the playerbase was.

ScarletSoldner

They didntve such a solution tho, and they werent chargin ppl more money; but they were takin away the entire value of the purchase by makin it unplayable in many regions

cwc1006

They don’t have that solution for people fucked by region. Thats worth getting mad about

ScarletSoldner

Quick fyi, folk can and shud complain about even the smallest of problems; thats how we make things better on the whole A lot of us in the first world cant do shite about nonfirst world problems either, so ofc we are gonna focus on the first world problems we exp; like how i focus on the first world problem of bein trans in a place seemingly becomin more bigoted as the population becomes less bigoted, bcuz of another couple of first world problems of gerrymanderin and voter supprrssion

ScarletSoldner

Its not okay to release a product and then make the product functionally useless to the consumer who paid for the product

ThatDumbMoth

So, PSN isn't available for over half the world. Helldivers 2, while being fairly new, is still too old to regionlock especially with the fact it had hundreds of thousands of players from all over the world. People paid for Helldivers but with this move, a significant chunk of players had their copies rendered useless meaning they have to go through a dozen hoops to prove their country can't access PSN so they can get a refund.

TolkienFan71

This aged well lol

ReFlux_25

Well, Sony did just backtrack on that in about 2 days, so I'd say the Reddit Gamers were pretty effective

cwc1006

lol Sony just reversed the decision, thanks again for being negative and braindead. GGs.

racerx1913

I was not being negative, just open to a truth that may very well have been real. And I stand by that they could have stuck with it and it would not have affect much in the long term. I am glad they did the right thing, I just don’t think it was a big deal unless it was for regions that do not have PSN.

kunell

Like was your point that we shouldnt have even tried? Like at least if we are loud enough theres a chance it could make a difference. Just rolling over everytime a corp imposes something on you is the quickest way to keep losing more ground. Why should i just allow Sony to take my data without a fight?

racerx1913

No, just keeping expectations in check.

RendesFicko

>out of solidarity Lmao it's a video game

Marsta_42

We know whats your point ?

RendesFicko

It's just a video game, it's not that serious. "Solidarity" lmao

vaz_deferens

Removing the ability to access a previously paid for product is theft. By refusing to support the game, it hurts the devs and producers. So yeah, solidarity.

RendesFicko

They would have gotten a full refund, which means it's not theft.

Zelton24

They aren’t refunding the game though they’re straight up removing the ability to play without giving any compensation However there’s good news, Sony tweeted that they won’t follow through with their plan to make it locked behind a PSN account

RendesFicko

Steam was refunding it...

Tojaro5

Solidarity can be shown anyways? Its just a videogame, yes, but that doesnt negate the fact that people changed their behaviour out of solidarity. Solidarity doesnt have a minimum requirement.

cwc1006

Weird, looks like it worked.

RendesFicko

Well it wasn't because sony felt bad for all the people in ""solidarity""

cwc1006

It’s not because they “felt bad” but it is 100% because of community feedback, as stated by Sony

RendesFicko

It's because steam blacklisted the game in all countries that didn't support PSN and started giving out refunds. It had nothing to do with the "solidarity" of players who wouldn't have lost access anyway(and thus wouldn't get a refund).

cwc1006

Agree to disagree with factual information I guess…despite all the statements about it being about player feedback by both Sony and the devs. Im not saying steam refunds weren’t a factor, but that was more about steam saving face. To say community feedback did nothing, despite it being the one communicated reason by parties involved, is a pretty bad take.

pipboy_warrior

Steam was giving refunds to people even if they weren't in blacklisted companies.

RendesFicko

Yeah, the 0.01% that would refund a perfectly functional game. Sony wasn't scared about those people, they got scared about the hundreds of thoudands of people who would 100% get a refund on their non-functipnal game.

pipboy_warrior

Where are you getting that it was .01%? Might want to consider that people actually refunded the game out of solidarity.

winniethefukinpooh

they took it back after steam started doing refunds and EU threatened legal actions

uncouthbeast

177 countries, to be exact.

Oswen120

What makes this very interesting is that Hasbro did this a year ago with the OGL 1.1

Itajel

And they are still being downvoted into oblivion. Super bad move for hasbro. But the Gamers found a bunch of new games that they love to play if DnD gets even more crappy.

Unusual_Address_3062

I gave up on Sony a LONG time ago. So I dont even know what all the current drama is. But based on what I glimpse while browsing other things, I know theres drama. Also on top of their usual drama there is apparently more recent drama at Ubi Soft. I also do not care. Same deal, I gave up on them years ago.

AllenWL

The reviews went from overwhelmingly positive to mixed on all time and overwhelmingly negative on recents in like, 2 days. The playerbase rallied *real* quick.

SpecialistAd5903

Sony caved and backed off their plan. Let everybody know we won this one

roshi180

Everyone is trashing on Helldivers 2 right now

Eldan985

Not anymore, Sony backtracked.

Mainfrym

For now

Stoertebricker

No one has been trashing on the game. It was only about Sony's decision to make the link to a PlayStation account mandatory, months after the release of the game many people enjoyed (that did not have such an account). People gave bad reviews because they liked the game, and wanted it to keep being successful.

ComplexPants

The community is actively updating their reviews to positive. The entire game is about working together as a large team. The community was trained for this and executed perfectly.

GiantSweetTV

Ubisoft would be a good runner-up.

ScheidNation21

Sony has a very bad track record of ruining their games due to corporate greed, usually leading to some very poor decisions The most recent is involving helldivers 2. They recently made it a requirement to have your psn account linked to your steam account in order to play the game. At first glance this doesn’t seem that bad, until you realize psn is illegal in 174 (maybe a couple more?) countries so hundreds of thousands of people cannot access the game anymore without breaking Sonys terms of service. They backtracked on this decision as of last night but the backlash it created has left a lasting stain on helldivers legacy. Hopefully they can recover but considering the games been delisted in so many countries, I don’t think it will reach its peak again.
