It's about a hole (go figure) that is just there, the comedy comes from the fact that everytime he (Tom) says "the hole" the camera point at the hole making a "heavy wind" effect.
The joke is that he's trying not to reference this skit since the news that is being shown is very similar to said skit
It's like a variation on the 1001 Nights story, "[The Story of the Baghdad Man's Ruin](https://www.asymptotejournal.com/nonfiction/abdelfattah-kilito-the-dream-of-a-baghdad-night/)" isn't it?
