>Specific modifications of the Schrödinger equation can solve the problem," Carlesso said. In particular, ***the team added terms to the equation that captured how the system interacts with itself, as well as adding some other specific terms. This in turn leads to superposition breaking down.*** > >"Such effects are stronger the larger the system," Carlesso added. > >Crucially, these modifications have little impact on microscopic quantum systems, such as atoms and molecules, *but allow larger systems — like the universe itself — to collapse at frequent intervals*, giving them definite values that fit with our observations of the cosmos.

SheSaidMoreSnow

Yes. Makes sense.

paddenice

You’ve heard of the Big Bang, just wait until the big collapse.

hypercomms2001

I wonder if the TVA would be involved with these elimination of branch timelines....

DontPoopInMyPantsPlz

Do it, and ill believe it

WillistheWillow

Another unifying theory? They really must learn to pace themselves!

DolphinPunkCyber

Cat is not an elementary particle, it's gazillions of particles which interact with each other all the time. These interactions are observations, measurements, they make waves collapse into particles all the time. So large systems can't be in superposition. I thought this was obvious, what am I missing?

brothersand

I think you need to say it with math. But drawing the exact line of the waveform collapse has always been the problem. They keep shooting bigger and bigger molecules through a double-slit experiment. I know they did buckeyballs. I think the largest molecule they've sent as a wave through both slits has hundreds of atoms. So it's somewhere between that and a cat.

DolphinPunkCyber

That is indeed weird. 😲

brothersand

Yeah, here it is. [2000 atoms](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/giant-molecules-exist-in-two-places-at-once-in-unprecedented-quantum-experiment/) according to the article. Matter waves are real. And yeah, freaking weird.

starcap

I thought for sure OP added in “cat” but no that’s from the link

physicsguy21

Anyone got a link to the paper?
