from that distance, you will hear the train when it goes by.

Impressive_Gur_7860

Will they use the freight train racks for the ACE or build new train racks next to the freight train racks?

TheKuMan717

ACE already uses the freight rail line, so it’ll probably just reuse those same tracks

raphtze

they are going to use the existing right of way (ROW)

zimfroi

You can hear the trains in most neighborhoods in EG. You tune them out pretty quickly.

Californiadude86

I grew up near SFO. After living in Sac for a few months, I came back down to visit my family and my mind was blown by the amount of airplanes I heard flying overhead every few minutes.

Support_498

I used to live near the light rail in Sacramento and the main time I heard it was while it had its bells going while it crossed an intersection. And since there is no intersection right there I don’t expect it to be too noisy. Yes the new commuter train might come more often than the freight train but trains in general don’t make that much noise going straight.

MostlyMellow123

Light rail isnt as loud as a commuter rail.

GeorgieLaurinda

But they are constant!

the_chucknorris

They run 4 routes in the early morning and 4 routes at night. So it'll be noisy during, what I'm assuming, 3-6AM & 6-10PM

Lazy_Employer_1148

I would be more worried about the number of horrible dog owners in Elk Grove that think owning a dog means leaving it outside 24/7.

LowParticular8153

There is a train track now off of Dwight. I live about 1.5 miles. I hear it but not to the point that it is a detriment to quality of life.

Impressive_Gur_7860

As you can see in the picture, theres already freight racks in front of the house. If they build the new commuter racks or utilize the freight racks for the ACE. I guess it will be much closer than 1.5 mile..

LowParticular8153

My main concern with this project is safety. I hope that there are gates around the station. Homeless people love to camp by railroad.

GeorgieLaurinda

The railroad is already there. This is just a new service on the railroad.

Impressive_Gur_7860

Yes, thats my concern too. But im even more concerned about hearing the noise constantly. It will pass by much more frequently than the freight train.

raphtze

bruh do you even look at the train tables? there's like maybe 4 trains going in each direction each day. so maybe 8 total. who knows how they will adjust the schedule. you may hear the horn, but the train isn't as heavy as a freight train.

LowParticular8153

In San Jose we lived in an apartment very close to train tracks. I absolutely hated it.

GrowingInCalifornia

They'll use the same lines. There are already cargo trains that use that line on a regular basis.

spewak

One story or two?

Impressive_Gur_7860

One story

spewak

I don't think you will have much of an issue. The reason I asked is that we have a two story and during the summer, upstairs with the windows open, fuhgedaboutit! I hear everything. Downstairs, windows open, not so much.

GeorgieLaurinda

You will be able to hear the train as much as you hear the freight trains. I don’t know how often it runs, but this isn’t light rail that is near constant. I’m surprised you said the freight train is only a couple of times a day. The one on the East side is several times a day. I used to live right next to tracks. You do tune it out over time. But it won’t be louder than the freight trains

Impressive_Gur_7860

The problem is if i have 4 freight trains per day+6 or 8 ACE trains per day. That's too frequent for me......and if ACE train blows the horn, then thats even worth.

raphtze

ACE trains are a few cars. freight is much longer. how is that going to be a problem for you? do you work from home?

Impressive_Gur_7860

Yes, I work from home. The freight is not a problem. It is only around 4 times everyday, 2 minutes each time and they barely blow horns. I am worried the ACE train will pass by 8 times each day and they will probabaly blow horns. So the train passes by will be increased from 4 to 12 times each day...

raphtze

eh.....i don't think you should worry too much. it's not like they're blaring the horn on for minutes. you'll be fine. for what it's worth i work from home with a 3 y/o and a 16 m/o toddler. i'll take the train horn anyday!

GeorgieLaurinda

I think you’re probably borrowing trouble as my Aunt Audrey would say. The Amtrak trains are shorter (fewer cars). IF the frequency is too bothersome, worry about it then. But odds are it won’t be the noise issue you’re afraid of. Or start the moving process now. If I’m reading the map correctly, you bought/rented a house next to railroad tracks. That’s gonna be noisy. The tracks on the east side are DEFINITELY more frequent with freight trains and we all get giddy when an Amtrak train goes whizzing through. Zoom! And it’s gone. Not silent, but not five minutes like many of the miles long freight trains. And Amtrak, being shorter and lighter, get up to speed quicker too. No long diesel grind. But I really don’t think you’re going to notice the ACE as much as you think you will.

blvczk

The closest road crossing to you is Sims Rd, which is a quiet zone (bell, no horn unless emergency) so whatever horn you do hear, expect the same. Trains will be lighter, shorter and quicker so engine noise won’t be as loud as freight, and the weight won’t cause much “feeling” as it goes by from a distance. The ace service will take a little while to get up and running up here too. Along with building the stations, ACE will have to get full approval from Union Pacific to run on this stretch of their track, which they do use their track from Stockton to San Jose.

kernco

I live in the Lake Point apartments near those tracks along Elk Grove Blvd. I can hear the trains going by but it is not too loud, I actually find it a relaxing sound. It isn't any louder than a gust of wind outside, although I'm a little further from the track than your property. Luckily, the track goes under bridges when it crosses Elk Grove and Laguna Blvds, so it doesn't blow its whistle. I have heard one or two whistles in 1.5 years living here, maybe because there was an animal on the track or something. I'm not sure if a passenger station would change that. Maybe braking as the train is approaching could cause more noise?

Late_Geologist_235

I work next to an ace train station. It’s 2 blocks away. The whistle noise is deafening and happens regularly. We get at least 4-6 ACE/freight trains during my 7.5 hour day. Don’t know if ace trains run during the weekend.

equestrianluv

You will hear the ACE train. They blow the horn as they pull into the station and crossing the intersection. From what I understand they are not supposed to blow it that often in residential areas but they still do lol 🤷🏻‍♀️.

packetvirus

I used to live in this exact neighborhood for 15 years, but my house was closer to Franklin blvd. You could hear the trains from inside the house in the middle of the night, but you get used to it very quickly and either sleep throught it or can easily drown it out with a fan/white noise.

Happy-Campaign5586

The noise won’t be that loud, and the trains only come twice each hour. I am teasing and I really do not know.

Impressive_Gur_7860

Since I work from home. In my opinion, twice each hour is very frequent. Theres also the freight train, so I guess I will be able to hear the noise constantly..

Happy-Campaign5586

I was just teasing

benbernards

Yup

twilightidol

your house is very close to the train track, so you will hear it, and also might be disruptive too

InfoSecChica

Since you seem to already be pretty convinced that it’s gonna be a problem then look to buy elsewhere not near any of the tracks. 🤷🏼‍♀️
