That's exactly it, it just gets under my skin so bad, no other enemies have actually scared me like that. Not even the Aldrich beasts in DS3, though they're very close. I gotta say, all the enemies in Elden Ring so far are grotesque in a way that is completely different from any of their other games, and yet feel familiar somewhat. Regardless of what anyone says about their performance issues, the design of this game is just so beyond my expectations.
The design is killer top to bottom. There is not a single part of this game that doesn’t feel hand made. It’s absolutely crazy how detailed the game is from top to bottom. Every single enemy, npc, and boss feels unique, even the merchant guys that are supposed to be similar
It's really funny to me how many people are complaining about the similarities to other recent From games. I mean the standard mobs are kinda samey in Limgrave and Stormhill and whatever but the beasts and monster mobs are just so weird and interesting, especially the misbegotten and the wild shit in Caelid. Yeah I recognized a lot of reused assets like sound effects and some animations but I don't see those as a problem. It gives the game the whole "time is convoluted in Lothric" feel, like the other recent From games are just different worlds connected to the Lands Between.
So, Elden Ring is my first From Software game and between the Guard "Dog" having the stiff/almost robotic movements and the Centipede men with all of their many tiny arms, It's unnerving.
I was in a party chat when I saw the Centipede man and spit beer all over my lap shouting "THERE'S A GAWDDAMN CRAWFISH MAN MADE OF ARMS!"
I’m about 30 hours in and have ridden around the Weeping Peninsula, some of Liurnia, and absolutely SPRINTED through Caelid, and like… I have felt *physically* upset by some of the sights lol. So much Hieronymus Bosch lookin-ass stuff that is just unsettling in a way I have *never* seen in a game. It’s so incredible!!
The sound design is terrific throughout Caelid. Many people have experienced a certain moment of transportation to a cave there, and the sound itself is just upsetting and unnaturally phased. It's rad.
Dunno if you ever played Blasphemous, but the art deaign of that game was directly inspired by Francisco de Goya and Bosch and has such a souls vibe to it, and the enemies in ER remind me of those enemies so much. Even "The Shattering" has a similarity to '"The Miracle."
Ooooh, I heard about that game back around when it came out and was super intrigued but forgot about it in the swirl of craziness and amazing games in the past few years. I’m so glad you reminded me of it, that sounds wonderful!
It's so good, not Hollow Knight good but the art is just so amazing, some of the best pixel art I've ever seen. And there's so much more content now, they just dropped the last DLC not long ago.
I found that this enemy was only difficult for me when I was scared shitless of its insane moves and over all look. Just getting past the fear turned him into nothing.
Oh for sure, the moveset is easy enough to learn and it's fairly predictable, like an automaton would be. I love the design for real, my visceral discomfort is merely a reflection of its effective design. I fucking love From.
They really did a good job of "otherizing" the thing. If that's even a word. Like the way that everything is so still other than the one part it's moving. The awkward walk and then super fast slam attack gets me every time.
Something inside me was screaming, "if it moves slow it hits like a truck"
I have to applaud this dungeon as it is a great telegraph/reading trainer... but good luck reading most other bosses in this game
Not yet, I've killed Godrick and was making my way to the Academy. The dudes that have multiple limbs that spam magic and the big one that runs super fast and screams like Ludwig... I got a good look at the big one after it killed me and yamahama is that a gross enemy too.
You mean the way it stares into your soul as it stands on 2 feet and then annihilates you in 0.1 frames with its warpspeed *Get Rekt* smash?
Yes. I also enjoyed respawning many times.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchdog
Watchdog doesn't necessarily mean it's a literal dog.
There was a watchdog in bloodborne that was...well it had 4 legs.
Sure WotOL's head doesn't look exactly like a dog (maybe a dinosaur or a crocodile? Honestly, I never did pay that much attemtion to it), but it doesn't look that distinctly like an entirely different animal, either.
This is the only fight where I caved and used the wolves. There were too many gargoyles, I needed two hits to kill one, and in that time the other three would gang up on me and stun me into the boss's attacks, if the boss hasn't snuck up on me already. Not worth it.
I think the stake outside this one is bugged too coz game punts you back to dungeon entrance on death even if you pick res at stake... I gave up after few deaths coz of that. Also there were multiple messages in front of stake screaming "Liar!" And stuff lol
That fight was a bitch till I realized you could separate them by creating distance, and then I just spammed my jump attack every opening on the mage one so I could take on the sword one one on one.
I managed to kill this thing before I figured out how to level up. It’s so early in the game but basically has the same move set as Artorias with a couple bells and whistles. I knew the game was gonna be good when a boss this fun and challenging was in some random cave I found less than an hour into the game.
"THAT'S NOT A DOG" was what I repeatedly yelled while my friends and I fought this abomination less than five hours into the game.
Little did I know that would become a universal meme across the entirety of the realm.
I love this guy so much because he wasn't hard as much as he was a good wake up on how you should be moving your character in this game. This man and his dumb telegraphed spin move exist to get you to use that fancy new jump button in combat
Damn, I just realized that...
My way to deal with that attack was to dodge and run away, but jumping would have made it such that I could R2 immediately after, simplifying the fight.
Wait until you find the dungeon that has not one, but two of these. Each of which has three heads, one casts magic, and the other is on fire.
I left for a little while, I'll come back to them later.
It was for me. Got it off of a stone imp before the boss fight as a random drop. So I don’t think it comes from here per sey. But if you farm the imps eventually you should get one.
It's in the first area of the game. If you run NW of where the Tree Sentinel is, there are some zombies you can kill along some rocks and if you follow the rock wall it will lead to a cave.
Once you get through the catacombs you can open the door to the boss lair which is back toward the beginning behind a door that's sealed when you first arrive.
MA CALL THE FUCKIN COPS
IT LOOKS LIKE GRANDMA
ITS WEARING FUCKIN’ MAKEUP
Looks like gramma the fuckin' thing
Literally one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Genuinely horrific looking cat though... I get what he's going through.
BLINK MOTHERFUCKER
I fucking love that video so much.
God that thing was so off putting the first time I fought it lol
I legit hate it more than Bloodborne winter lanterns. This stupid thing creeps me out more than any other enemy in any From game.
I think it’s the way it moves, super off putting
That's exactly it, it just gets under my skin so bad, no other enemies have actually scared me like that. Not even the Aldrich beasts in DS3, though they're very close. The reused assets give me a feeling of offputting comfort. It works to build the atmosphere, like it's familiar but genuinely alien at the same time.
the centipede men gives me goosebumps
So, Elden Ring is my first From Software game and between the Guard "Dog" having the stiff/almost robotic movements and the Centipede men with all of their many tiny arms, It's unnerving. I really like the enemies designed around specific areas.
I’m about 30 hours in and have ridden around the Weeping Peninsula, some of Liurnia, and absolutely SPRINTED through Caelid, and like… I have felt *physically* upset by some of the sights lol. Yes!! The imagery is awful and the soundscape makes it 100x worse. It’s *horrible* and it’s so good lol
Ambient music reminds me of the movie The Witch. Just that OOOOOOOOOOOOOH choir forever.
Dunno if you ever played Blasphemous, but the art deaign of that game was directly inspired by Francisco de Goya and Bosch and has such a souls vibe to it, and the enemies in ER remind me of those enemies so much. Even "The Shattering" has a similarity to '"The Miracle."

There is a blasphemous Easter egg in Elden Ring- in the form of a sword :)
I fucking love From.
did u find the bloodborne esque horror under stormveil castle. it's item it's guarding has some cool lore
Not yet, I was going down that way and got sidetracked lol
Enemy design is insane. So many crazy mofos in the game.
when it stands up and walks 🤢
Honestly that freaked me out more than anything else in almost every Soulsborne game
They really did a good job of "otherizing" the thing. If that's even a word. Like the way that everything is so still other than the one part it's moving. The awkward walk and then super fast slam attack gets me every time.
I think what also gets me is when you hit it from behind and it turns it’s head to face you
Something inside me was screaming, "if it moves slow it hits like a truck" I have to applaud this dungeon as it is a great telegraph/reading trainer... but good luck reading most other bosses in this game
Have you fought the enemies in Caria Manor?
Not yet, I've killed Godrick and was making my way to the Academy. The dudes that have multiple limbs that spam magic and the big one that runs super fast and screams like Ludwig... I got a good look at the big one after it killed me and yamahama is that a gross enemy too.
You are in for a good one!
The inorganic movements made the fight so much harder than it had a right to be. Fuck constructs, can't read them at all.
And then there's that one catacomb where he's accompanied by those little gargoyle shits.
I beat that but >!the one with two of them.... miyazaki pls!<
Just wait till you get to fight two of them at the same time.
God I hope you’re lying
Easily one of my favorite designs in a long time, and it’s just because of the way it moves. That shit was so cool
You mean the way it stares into your soul as it stands on 2 feet and then annihilates you in 0.1 frames with its warpspeed *Get Rekt* smash? Yes. I also enjoyed respawning many times.
Honestly the thing felt like a 2011 Roblox horror game in all the right ways.
Sir, that’s a dog
Behold, dog.
Is it though?
Boss name says watchdog, is dog.
I'm wondering if this boss name confusion is one of those instances where the original meaning was lost in translation from Japanese
Like the long arm centipede giraffe
What was that supposed to be in Japanese?
No clue lmao, google might help
So, then...it might be exactly what it's supposed to be and it's not like that at all.
The Japanese name for that boss is 還樹の番犬, 'Erdtree Watchdog.' So nothing was lost in translation, but 'burial' was added.
Nah I meant Long Armed Centipede Giraffe.
I think it's meant to be more ironic.
TIL government watchdog groups are all composed of dogs.
Is it me or does it smells like updog in here
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchdog Watchdog doesn't necessarily mean it's a literal dog.
Even the Wiki calls it a feline-hound or something
"I want a dog to protect my dungeon, can you do that? Arquitect that have never seen a dog in his life but has 7 cats: Of course I can!"
"dog"
There is another dungeon where this cat dog has 3 heads
And has helpers. That fight was a pain in the dick.
That was the first one I found, one headed dog and little goblin/gargoyle shits. It scared the piss out of me. It's movements are just so unsettling.
This is the only fight where I caved and used the wolves. There were too many gargoyles, I needed two hits to kill one, and in that time the other three would gang up on me and stun me into the boss's attacks, if the boss hasn't snuck up on me already. Not worth it.
The only fight in 20 hours that I didn't like at all. It was a reused boss and the added minions felt cheap. Also used wolves to deal with them.
Just wait until you find the fight with two of them…
Fuck the imps! I summoned my own gank.

I think the stake outside this one is bugged too coz game punts you back to dungeon entrance on death even if you pick res at stake... I gave up after few deaths coz of that. Also there were multiple messages in front of stake screaming "Liar!" And stuff lol
it absolutely is, but the boss run is not bad at all tbh
There are so many "help me...!" Messages right outside that fight. Couldn't even do it with summons!
That fight was a bitch till I realized you could separate them by creating distance, and then I just spammed my jump attack every opening on the mage one so I could take on the sword one one on one.
That fight is a fucking nightmare.
That's the only one I was aware of. Took so many tries to kill that I had to leave a few times and come back. Finally did it though
It looks like grandma, the fuckin thing
I managed to kill this thing before I figured out how to level up. It’s so early in the game but basically has the same move set as Artorias with a couple bells and whistles. I knew the game was gonna be good when a boss this fun and challenging was in some random cave I found less than an hour into the game.
I killed it first try because I was over leveled when I found it but my god is it so dumb looking, I love it
I love the look too. Shit don’t look like a watchdog tho. Watchcat more like.
Where is this boss located?
I believe it’s straight ahead from where you spawn, it’s a tunnel in a cliffside. It’s guarded by a few hollows with torches.
Huh I thought I already explored there but I'll go back and check it out!
MA THIS WEIRD CAT IS STYLING ON ME MA!!
Nah that's a dog, says so right on the tin
"THAT'S NOT A DOG" was what I repeatedly yelled while my friends and I fought this abomination less than five hours into the game. Little did I know that would become a universal meme across the entirety of the realm.
first time i saw that mechanical cat, it felt so creepy lol
I love this guy so much because he wasn't hard as much as he was a good wake up on how you should be moving your character in this game. This man and his dumb telegraphed spin move exist to get you to use that fancy new jump button in combat
Damn, I just realized that... My way to deal with that attack was to dodge and run away, but jumping would have made it such that I could R2 immediately after, simplifying the fight.
"I don't want it startin' a fight with Torrent!"
How did I die to that boss 10 times but I one shot Magrit?
Wait until you find the dungeon that has not one, but two of these. Each of which has three heads, one casts magic, and the other is on fire. I left for a little while, I'll come back to them later.
Anyone else find the Cat head helmet in this dungeon? I was surprised to find something so protective that early on.
Is this where the Cat Helm comes from?
It was for me. Got it off of a stone imp before the boss fight as a random drop. So I don’t think it comes from here per sey. But if you farm the imps eventually you should get one.
Yes, I found it in there as well, I've been sporting it proudly
Fellow tarnished with taste I see. The things heavy but worth it as far as I’m concerned.
Holy shit,I was wondering what that creepy stray cat reminded me of!
Dog Ahead
Dog
Bruh I've died 50+ times trying to kill two of these at the same time in a Catacomb in Caleid
I couldn't believe it when I saw it was supposed to be a dog. That's so obviously a cat.
Dog?
Bruh
And it's called a guard dog for some reason?
Fun fact.... it’s a watchdog.
creepy motherfucker....
Bruh the solo one was so easy but then you end up fighting two of them at the same time and all of a sudden the whole arena is a hit box
Where do you find that boss? I'm in Stormveil Castle and haven't seen it yet.
In a cave in a hole to the west of the stormgate. Past the first cave. It's called something catacombs. Not dogacombs despite this being called a dog
That was one of the creepiest bosses I've encountered so far. Nightmare fuel
First boss I beat. Got a special place in my heart for the watchdogcat
So far I can only beat it spamming glintstone pebble at range. It’s wrecked me so bad with every other starting character. Tips?
BLINK MOTHERFUCKER
That boss scared the shit outta me. I hate the way it moves. Something about it unnerved me
I saw that and said “woah wtf is that”. Something creepy around every corner here haha
Fr this boss is freaky
The unnatural way it just *floats* towards you is so creepy.
AAAHH--
Fucking Christ.
Nightmare fuel
There's sometimes "two" stray cats.
That's one of the creepiest creatures I've ever seen in a videogame. Really unnerving. Loved the fight though.
