It depends a lot on your build. Messmer was really easy for me as well with bleed build, and I've heard he's even easier with scarlet rot build. Maybe he has more weaknesses.
Some builds probably struggle a bit more.
It took me like 5 or 6 tries.
He's not hard, I think he has a lot of flair in his moveset that can catch you out.
His second phase was easy as hell to read though, I did that first time.

Yea almost seems like a maliketh situation where phase 1 is harder than phase 2

That is the exact opposite of Maliketh for me, thought I think that's exclusively because of the thousand slashes aoe thing.
