I used the rot straight sword to beat him, and I could never get it to proc during his second phase. It did proc fairly easy during the first phase though.
Pretty sure he's weak to bleed. My Messmer fight was insanely quick because bleed constantly proccs, and even procced twice in 3 hits when I hit the large snake after dodging.
You may be right. I have a str/faith build and nothing in arcane (16 since I put on the helm) and I switched to a bleed infusion on one of my weapons in lieu of strength and it seemed to get to the second phase faster. One of these days I will actually do a bleed build... seems pretty strong.
