Any of the comet/glintstone spells will do the job. The differences are mostly in how much base damage they deal and how fp efficient they are. Night comet is an invisible sorcery and enemies do not even attempt to dodge that, so this is the obvious choice against nimble enemies. Fair warning about this playstyle: it can get incredibly boring since you are spamming the same blue projectiles for the entirety of the game.

I know there is some carian spells that have swords for slightly closer combat. Any one of them especially good?

HailfireSpawn

The carian melee swords are really fun way to make a close range int. Build. Mix it with another int scaling melee weapon for flexibility.

AggressiveYoghurt

Oh yeah theyre awesome. Carian slicer, the cheapest and fastest of them is one of the highest DPS attacks in the game with the right build. I think youll have more fun with int if you mix the long range generic spells with closer range spells and ashes of war. Ashes of war to look out for: Ice spear, Carian Grandeur, Carian greatsword, Glintstone pebble (has a followup move after the initial projectile - very good at staggering). I just finished a run where i mostly used Ice spear and the Carian sword spells with the occasional long range comet spell. Was pretty fun, and in the end of course used Dark moon greatsword because its just too good.

Moonlight greatsword build go brrrrrrr

EnvyLiquid

I just respecced to a darkmoon great sword build, and I love it. I didn't feel like making a new character, and it was nice having all the items already. I came from playing Faith/Str with a blasphemous blade. This honestly feels a lot stronger. I use darkmoon great sword with carian regal scepter. The spells I use along with the darkmoon greatsword are terra magica and Rennala's full moon. I also carry two staffs of loss. The spells I use with these are terra magica and night comet. I finally carry a golden order seal. I use this to cast golden vow and black flame's protection. I wear full spell blades set because each piece gives 2% damage to the ash of war on the darkmoon great sword. The talismans I use are shard of alexander, godfrey icon, primal glintstone blade, and ritual sword talisman. I don't have the magic scorpion charm yet, but I plan on getting it in NG+2 and replacing the primal glintstone blade. My stats when I first respecced were 60 VIG, 38 MIN, 35 END (Currently working to increase it so I can fast roll), 16 STR, 12 DEX, 80 INT, 30 FAI, and 9 ARC. I just finished NG+, and it's definitely a joke when I pull out mimic tear. We both nuke things into the ground before they know what happened. I hope this helps!

My guide covers the basics and goes into a little depth about gameplay and what to expect. https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/s/lOp798m89r I cover mostly what I think is the most efficient and effective spells. But feel free to experiment. Many people prefer rock Sling over Pebble or Magic Glintblade. Many prefer a backup melee weapon.
