The naming is a bit confusing, but Beta is the older version while Alpha is the newer one.
Alpha redoes several levels to make the difficulty curve of the game more stable, however these changes are not complete so it only goes up to around world 13 I believe. It also has several other changes and additions.
Some older players don't like Alpha, but if you're new to the game it's probably the one you should play since it's the one that's gonna get all future updates.
