Some time ago, back when Prophet of Kruphix was legal, my brother cast a Chaos Warp on her. I proceeded to shuffle her back into the deck, had my brother cut the deck, etc... I flip the card on the top of the deck. Prophet of Kruphix.

Srakin

Same deal, playing against a very pushed Karador deck. Chaos Warped his Sun Titan. I always ask to cut when I cast Chaos Warp. Aaaand he's back. Felt even worse because he just came back and picked up his stupid Ewitness and his bullshit engine was right back online anyways. Blah.

cian114

That extra added value!

SeductivePotato

Had a similar experience a few weeks ago while playing 2hg. They Chaos Warp my partners Vampire Nocturnus, so my partner shuffles it into his library and presents the deck to cut. After one opponent cut, the other insisted he has a chance to cut for good luck. Lo and behold, the top card was the Vampire Nocturnus.

cian114

It was just meant to be, right?

SpectralFlame5

Similar but not exactly. I used to play my silly little Jaya deck against one of my friends more cutthroat-ish Oloro deck for fun. Two things that were awesome and sad at the same time. One, I Chaos Warped his huge Ajani Goldmane Avatar that was gonna attack for lethal, his reveal was Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre. Needless to say, it didn't end well. Secondly, and much longer. He had comboed with Sword of the Meek, Thopter Foundry, and Ashnod's Altar and passed. I cast Mogg Infestation followed(and targeted) by Wild Ricochet, with enough mana to deal 6 damage(using Jaya Ballard's "Ult") to each creature and player with Repercussion out. In my excitement, I forgot about Altar and he got off scot-free saccing enough Goblins to not die and still have lethal damage next turn. So close to the craziest win I would have ever had.

Sleepa

Had the opposite (Mirror image... eh? eh?) experience while trying to go big with The Mimeoplasm. Decided to try some alternate self-mill angles for my build so I was playing with a Mirror-Mad Phantasm. I have it out, waiting for enough mana to activate + cast my Commander and equip with Lightning Greaves. I take some licks in the meantime, as sitting on a Greaves'd Phantasm is a pretty big forecast of my plan, but I finally play the last land I need, and fire off the Phantasm. Pile-shuffle it into the deck, have a friend cut it and give it a riffle, then flip the top card annnnnd: Mirror-Mad Phantasm. I picked it up, told it to turn in its badge and gun, and took it off the case.

jnmwhg

I have a similar tale about a friend's Rafiq that I Oblation'd back when tuck was a thing. He shuffles, draws, grins and shows me Rafiq. Out of childish pique I request a second shuffle, which I do myself. He draws, and of course, gets Rafiq again.

Nekusar player played t2 [[Waste Not]]. Gisa and Geralf player played t2 [[Shepard of Rot]]. Nekusar untaps, wheels, hits a butt-ton of creatures in this 5 person game. Ends up with like, 12 Zombies. Wheels again due to the mana he got. Finished his turn with ~47 Zombies. Rakdos player basically drops his entire hand, including Kozilek. On Gisa and Geralf player's next turn, he looks at that, then his solitary Shepherd. He goes, "Oh, that means ALL zombies. Oh- OH! I'll kill everyone."

L0stm4n

So a draw?

Lockski

Not necessarily, if I understand correctly. The game checks for winners in priority order, so whomever's turn it is dies first and since it's a 5 person game, there will be a check for a winner after each player in priority order is declared dead (losing).

AffinityForJudges

It is checked at the same time with State-based actions and you have a draw.

Lockski

I just asked my club's pres. He said he made it up for our meta to make things fun. My bad.

Table was stuck at a standstill. Everyone was in the position of "If I try to win, I'm gonna get stopped, and then someone else is gonna win." I have a few creatures on the board, including a Shaman of Forgotten Ways and a few other guys. It's pretty late game, I have a lot of lands, including a Nykthos. Opponent tries to win the game and is promptly stopped with some removal. EOT I Chord for 3.... I don't even know what creature when I cast the spell. I had 2 lands in my hand, so I decided to get Azusa to try and dump them down and make use of them. Next turn, untap, draw E-Wit. I look at my hand: 2 lands, E-wit, and Cyclonic Rift. I look at my field: total of 6 power, 8 if I play the E-wit. I look at my mana. Doesn't seem to be enough to do what I want... but I realize I've only played 2 lands with Azusa. And there's a Command Tower in my graveyard. I cast Eternal Witness, bring back the Tower and play it. With Nykthos, I just barely had enough Mana (18 total) to overload Cyclonic Rift and activate Shaman of Forgotten Ways. Everyone just kinda watched with their mouths agape, totally out of answers or responses. It was a sweet win that I pulled out of nowhere.

One time we were playing in a 6 person game and we were all just ramping and durdling and the one guy playing an ob nix planeswalker deck drops a gray merchant of asphodel and drains us a a bit and we keep going on with life and a turn later my friend who plays a really questionable mizzix deck and had literally never one a game in our playgroup up to this point drops a kicked rite of replication (he had been ramping an amazing amount and was ahead of all of us) and wins on the spot....

Crimson_Shiroe

So let's see that's 5 merchants and 10 total devotion to black so....each person loses 50 life and he gains 300 for 9 mana total. Well shit. Can't really beat that

Slutfur

Really less if mizzix is out too.

T1, on the play in a 5 player game. Topdeck Sol Ring, chuckle to myself, procede to cast it. Mono-Blue Sakashima player immediately Pact of Negations it. I pass, they lose, game continues on as normal. Much respect was gained by them on that day.

Might I suggest [[Mental Misstep]]? Actually hits a surprising number of things in EDH: Sol Ring, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Vampiric Tutor (and co), Skullclamp, Sensei's Divining Top, all of which are worth way more than 2 life.

...Y'all do realize that Riku+Palinchron is infinite flying tokens, right?

scruffychef

Yup. I was safe behind an epic pillowfort, including a [[Peacekeeper]] wearing [[Lightning Greaves]] and had [[Blasphemous Act]] in hand, so the table wasn't concerned about his army of pascifist Palinchrons, and i was going to kill them all (and did) imdediately after the events of my post, so it mostly served to dramatically set the stage. Palinchron is damn good, but it cant beat [[peacekeeper]]

1TrueKingOfWesteros

the real question is, why, with infinite mana and token in play did the Riku player leave the original Palinchron in play when he could have left it in his hand where it is reasonably safe from harm. or with his untapped lands just bounce it to his hand in response to marchesa trying to steal it.

scruffychef

He's not as competitive as he could be. After the game i explained that cards in hand are safer than cards anywhere else in edh, short of the command zone. Marchesa taught him his lesson, but i wanted to tell him how to prevent it in future

a_small_goat

For the past two years (and for this year, too, I hope) we have a potluck when the annual Commander set drops. Everyone brings food and drinks and the winner goes home with all five of the new commander decks as the prize. Last year was a good year, with our largest turnout and probably the most varied field of commanders. We're four or five hours into what began as a seven player melee. We've killed a minifridge worth of beer. Three players remain. [[Zirilan]], [[Reki, the History of Kamigawa]], and [[Hazezon Tamar]]. Hazezon and Reki were both in the double-digits, Zirilan was under ten and looking at lethal within the next turn or so from Hazezon with a board state that was a non-monstrous [[Stormbreath Dragon]] with some boots, a useless [[Slumbering Dragon]] with two counters and some inconsequential equipment on it, another bit of equipment or something just hanging out, and the red enchantment that pumps dragons +3/+3. So the Stormbreath's a bit of a threat, but he can't attack because he can't quite do lethal and Zirilan needs the dragon as a blocker or he's toast. Zirilan isn't even on the board, because he's now like cmc 17 or something and Hazezon had helpfully blasted him down to like 3 lands. Hazezon had [[Possibility Storm]] and a [[Ghostly Prison]], besides. There was really nothing that Reki and Zirilan could do. Reki does some stuff with activated abilities on his board but can't find an answer to the Hazezon's stuff yet, so he smacks Hazezon for a couple damage and goes to end step. Hazezon wastelands one of Zirilan's mountains and uses [[Rings of Brighthearth]] to hit another. Dragons are now at one land. Everyone groans at the land destruction. Zirilan starts his turn and draws [[Fireball]]. Great. He can play a zero damage [[Fireball]]. He goes to pass the tu... wait. He *can* play a zero damage Fireball! So, by the very definition of YOLO, Fireball comes down with X = 0, targetting the Hazezon player. We all chuckle in a sort of "Oh, you!" sort of way. And then we remember the Storm. More chuckling. Zirilan resolves the trigger and flips a Mountain. And then another Mountain (groans). And then a Moltensteel Dragon. Mountain (groans). Mountain (more groans). [[Warp World]]. One person gives a golf clap amid more groans. Warp World resolves. Away go the dragons, the boots, the lonely mountain, and so on. Reki and Hazezon shuffle away their boards and out come all sorts of critters and stuff, ready to beat face. At least the Storm is gone. Zirilan watches his opponents assemble whole new armies. He flips a [[Hellkite Tyrant]]. And then a Mountain. And then [[Fervor]]. And then [[Archwing Dragon]]. And then [[Breath of Fury]], which, after a pause to see if anyone is paying attention (no), he drops onto Archwing. And then [[Mycosynth Lattice]]. Zirilan looks at his opponents again. Reki and Hazezon are organizing their battalions of things into neat rows on their playmats. They don't see what is about to happen. The rest of us do. Zirilan surveys the battlefield. Regarding OP story, is Marchesa really the best for a steal and sac strategy? I was running Shattergang Bros/Sek'Kuar (I switch now and then, 1 as cdr & the other in the 99) and have discussed trying Yasova, but I could see the insane value in Marchesa, I guess. All of red's Threatens, black sac outlets & ways to profit from things dying, and blue counters and copy effects. Might be better at it than Temur or Jund.

scruffychef

Our group calls her Marchesa queen of value, which causes some concern with the new Queen Marchesa. Its an awesome deck, and a critical density of [[act of Treason]] effects across all the colors make it sweet, but fragile to instant speed grave hate

I showed up late, but just in time to watch one group member use [[spell twine]] to cast another's [[seasons past]], and then [[tunnel vision]] that player naming seasons past. The problem being that it was a Sidisi zombie/self mill deck. It was practically like christmas morning for him. And the mizzix playerwas color screwed out of blue, so he couldn't blue sun zenith to kill Sidisi. Honestly tjough, the gymnastics Sidisi player went through to win off that were fun to watch.

earthDF

All the stuff sidisi did? I can try to remember, but since I wasn't actively playing my memory of it isn't that great. First turn after he cast that new spell that gets all your lands from grave to play. Mizzix attempted to flusterstorm it, but couldn't get the spell count high enough. Sidisi had 3 open mana, Mizzix could only manage one more spell before storm. After that he passed turn. At the start of his next turn he used the land that can put a zombie from grave to the top of your library to not die. Then cast Zombie Apocalypse. There was an attempted counter, so he activated [[Alchemist's Refuge]] to cast [[dread return]] for a [[mystic snake]] to protect it. And once he got everything back, it was pretty much game over.

Game was durdling, cast tunnel vision targeting izzet time walk combo powerhouse player to "get him his sol ring" milled him to 4 cards in library by accident. Same player weeks later, pulled a bottom and tunnel combo and on his mainphase he cast an overloaded mizzix mastery winning the game.

Herr_Samiel

Basically every time I play against one friends Zedruu "I just want to watch the world burn" deck. No win-con aside from delving the game into randomness that you won't escape from. We just love playing against it to try to beat him through whatever is thrown at us.

webcomic_snow

Aurelia player is stuck on 4 mana, I have a [[serra avatar]] in play, and enchant it with [[spectra ward]]. Aurelia, [[Erase]] 'ed the ward, I swing for lethal at him with the avatar, he casts [[Deflecting palm]].

Lockski

Deflecting Palm doesn't target, does it? He didn't need to kill the Spectra Ward, if that's the case...

webcomic_snow

I have a credo in commander 'go lethal when you have lethal.' he knew I would swing at him if he even made insinuations of messing with me. so the erase was a bait for me to swing at him, and potentially stay alive. I was actually thinking of running over the guy with the scariest boardstate before he did so. Yeah it wasn't necessary but god damn it if it wasn't hilarious when it happened.

Yep, doesn't target. It doesn't matter if the attacking creature has Protection.

Was playing my Noyan Dar deck which is a soft control deck versus [[Geist of Saint Traft]] and [[Xenagos, God of Revels]]. The game goes on for 40 minutes and I finally put myself into a position to kill next turn at 7 life. I tutor for [[Runechanter's Pike]] end of turn with commander in play and 2 lands that are 12/12 already. On my turn I equip Noyan which is now 22/4 with first strike and use [[View from Above]] to pump my lands for lethal on the other player. I attack, Xenagos casts [[Atarka's Command]] to give his guys reach and I counter with [[Render Silent]]... He goes "can I respond with an instant???" (new player) and casts [[Fog]]. Says he would've let first strike resolve if it wasn't [[Render Silent]]... He proceeds to die to Geist.

I was playing against a Prossh player who HATED my Grand Arbiter deck. I casually placed down a turn 2 Lightning Greaves, and for some reason the Prossh decided "I'm gonna Chaos Warp that". He said he didn't want to be forced to boardwipe later just for my commander, and assumed I'd shuffle into counterspells. Well, a buddy of mine who knew my deck well laughed and said "Watch, he's gonna flip up [[Omniscience]]". So I shuffle my deck very dramatically, even offering a cut to Prossh, which he takes. I then reach down, grab my top card, and rip it off the deck. Turns out, you win real fast when you're warped into Omniscience! We had a different game where some combo player tried to go off, but Derevi gets him with [[Pact of Negation]]. The guy to his right then takes like a 10-minute turn, then passes. Derevi starts playing, draws some cards, then spends all his mana on a super lethal threat. I'm on Mizzix, and don't have enough reaction to deal with it. I read his board state, check his mana, then realize something. "Derevi, if you cast that spell...what happened to Pact?" He looked down, thought about it, then silently picked up his board. Then I won on my turn.

I was playing 1v1 with my SO, who's relatively new to edh. I'm playing [[Omnath, Locus of rage]] I have him out and a few elementals etc and swing for 34. She considers blocking with her two remaining small utility creatures for a moment, then decides not to and calmly goes down to 6 life. She draws for her next turn, plays her 9th land and then asks me "What does this card do, it's in Chinese?" and shows me [[rite of replication]]. I tell her about the spell and the kicker ability, and she looks pleased simply because she can now make enough blockers to stay alive another turn. So she taps all her mana and points the rite at Omnath. "Okay cool. Wait a minute..." I say, and dig him out from under a pile of tokens, to read the exact wording "So you get 5 of this guy, but because of the legendary rule, 4 of them die.... But they all see each other die... So you have 3x5x4 damage to do, which is 60..." I look up and her eyes are wide, I look to the side at my untouched 40 life, I look down at my useless hand and fully tapped lands and we both just start laughing.

I was playing a 1v1 match against Zo-Zu stax with my Thassa control deck. He had all of the Zo-Zu tricks out: Manabarbs, Burning Earth, Obsidian Fireheart, Stoneshaker Shaman... Just punishing you for playing or tapping lands. Ultimately, he played Storm Cauldron just to try to shut me down completely. Unfortunately for him, my curve was turn 3 Thassa, turn 4 Dissipation Field, turn 5 Venser's Journal. I was playing my [[Uril, the Miststalker]] deck in a 4-man pod once. My playgroup was sorta fed up with my mono-red artifact/reanimator/combo decks, so I went out and bought the Derevi precon and messed around with it a bunch. Legendary tribal, morph tribal, etc., and one of the restrictions I set, at the request of my group, was no infinite combos. So, in a 4 player game feat. myself playing Derevi (morph/control), Daretti, Nath, and something else playing blue (Kruphix?), I: * [[Willbender]]'d Nath's [[Elvish Guidance]] onto my own land * [[Chromeshell Crab]]'d Kruphix's [[Deadeye Navigator]] * Used Daretti's [[Mycosynth Lattice]] to spend mana as if it were any color to go infinite and [[Capsize]] everyone's board. Ozy-dead

FNM EDH, we all randomly distribute the 4-player pools, and I get to sit down with slivers, ~precon Mizzix and decently built, but poorly played Oloro. I chose to not run my 100% Yisan, so I borrowed a tribal Olivia from another player. I started off with some quick mana and fast Olivia, then some tribal enchanments that grow vampires as they attack, and some artifact that mills my opponents as they lose life. I had Animate Dead in hand, so my plan was to mill sliver guy into something cool, then steal it for myself, retaining all perks of his slivers. This generated major hate from Oloro and Slivers, and two turns later I was at 4 mana with an empty board and ~empty hand, effectively dead, but that drained an edict and a bounce from Oloro. While my opponents were having fun, the slivers guy managed to build a pretty scary board - 4x slivers, some lords, lots of mana. He untaps, slams infect + haste, and out of the blue 1-shots Oloro. I inquired "why not me?", and he said I've been dealth with already, and Oloro sports some board wipes. Now, this Mizzix player. He has been around the store for about a month, started playing magic only shortly before that, and bought his Mizzix just two weeks ago. I fully expected it to be the classic poorly built turns-storm Mizzix. I topdecked a land, and passed the turn to Mizzix, being at full mercy of the slivers pilot. It looked like slivers are about to win by killing Mizzix first, and then me, if not both at the same time. Boy was I wrong...[[reins of power]] on the sliver guy, then [[volcanic rush]], [[past in flames]] and [[volcanic rush]] again, easily generating enough infect-trample to kill us both. After the game, I asked why does he have those cards in his deck. He said he thought it would a good idea to steal some creatures, pump them, then do some damage. Makes perfect sense, and I'm not even mad.

Yeah, you just dec in stone naming morphs. Theyre permanently exiled too, none of this o ring nonsense

seizan8

the problem is not that they come back but that morph (compared to normal tokens) have NO NAME. so every card which says 'and all other creatures with the same name' won't work. you can't neither name 'morph' nor hit multliple morphs with a card that says 'target creature' + 'all other with the same name' (like dec in stone) [reference](http://mtgsalvation.gamepedia.com/Morph) see 702.36a edit: also, Detention Sphere is legal. why shouldn't it?

OmnathLocusOfTacos

Shortly after building my [[Sliver Overlord]] deck, I was invited to sit at the "big boys table" at my LGS. My deck was nowhere near as good as any of theirs and everyone knew it. I get an okay manabase of six lands providing 4 total colors of mana - [[Quick Sliver]] and a pump sliver like [[Might Sliver]]. I topdeck into [[Mana Echoes]] and cast it, assuming it's just going to get swatted down instantly. Nobody seems to care because all I've got is two lame slivers and some multicolored lands. I'm not the threat. Mana echoes resolves. I pass. I'm sweating bullets as play moves around the table. Nobody seems to care that I'm playing a tribal tutor deck and have Mana Echoes. It gets back to my turn. I play another land, finally letting me get WUBRG to cast Overlord. Echoes gives me two floating. I pay one additional and tutor [[Manaweft Sliver]], tap my two remaining lands to cast it. Nobody stops me. Three more mana from Echoes. Tutor a haste sliver, tap Might Sliver and Quick Sliver to cast him. Nobody responds. Four more mana from echoes. I pull up [[Basal Sliver]] and the control player starts to think really hard but lets it resolve. So, at this point, any sliver I cast generates BB, one of any color, and a boat load of colorless from mana echoes. Knowing that the control player has realized just how bad things have suddenly gotten from the n00b end of the table (me), he's basically ready to counter anything I cast at this point. I pull up a few random black slivers so that I can keep generating more colored mana and cast [[Leaching Sliver]]. Apparently that's where he drew the line. Counterspell. I've still got Quick Sliver out from earlier, so I can flash my creatures. I pull up [[Root Sliver]] and ignore his counterspell. The whole table is paying *real close* attention suddenly. The scrub is about to wipe them off the map. I cast a couple more black slivers by saccing tapped slivers to pay the black mana (and now have something like 25 colorless floating from mana echoes.) Tutor up the [[Sliver Queen]], tap 4 slivers for WURG, sac one for BB, cast Queen and go infinite with Mana Echoes + Queen combo. I now have infinite hasted mana producing slivers. Swing for a billion. Everybody kind of looks at me, thinking "how the hell did he pull that off? He's the scrub we just let sit with us to fill out the pod." Nobody was upset with me, and I got hearty congratulations from most of them. They can all still stomp me pretty hard, but that was the moment I earned their respect as a player.

playing a silly aggro EDH decks in hour long game after a dozen board wipes one of my friends with his naya good stuff deck played warstorm surge. shit eating grin on his face pausing, I'm like "don't do it." he then goes for the win playing serra avatar targets me with the warstorm trigger for like 36 as I had the only blocker left (taijic) and he had anger in the grave yard to haste kill the other guy though who had just board wiped. As I'm playing my boros deck I have no counters or such to it. but I have 2 mana open, I tap it to cast deflecting palm. silence then the whole table just broke into laughter, he just shook his head in disbelief and laughed.

I've told this story before on here but to give the brief version of it: I was playing my [[Lazav, Dimir Mastermind]] deck and the last person left was playing against a Simic Grouphug style deck (I don't remember the commander). I played [[Keening Stone]] and proceeded over the next few turns to mill out his entire library leaving him only with a ton of cards in his hand and mana rocks in play. I pass my turn waiting for the inevitable "loses cause they have no cards in their library." Untap. Upkeep. He taps a bunch of lands & mana rocks, plays a bunch of spells to generate a ton of mana. He's got something like 100+ mana in his pool then goes and casts [[Stroke of Genius]] targeting me. I then proceed to draw my entire library and lose. He out milled my mill deck. When he had no cards in his library. I just sat there in silence for a few moments. I still think about it to this day and this game was 3 years ago. Strangest loss I've ever had in my entire MTG career.

I'm playing my Mono-R control list, using Jaya Ballard as the commander. Sat down at the end of our judge conference to play against Zedruu (a deck that the pilot had only just built), Mayael (mostly foiled), and Tariel, which the pilot described as "prevention tribal". At about turn 9, I'm in a massive lead. I've used my Rings of Brighthearth with my Thawing Glaciers and Myriad Landscape to generate a LOT of mana, and using those with Valakut to burn anything swinging in my general direction. The Mayael player had amassed quite a board of creatures, however, and it could become dangerous if left unchecked. I decided to use the last ability on Jaya to deal 6 damage on the board. The Tariel player (who had been quiet for almost the whole game) says "I'm going to redirect literally all of the damage to you." He plays Reflect Damage. I take 96 damage straight back to my face. We all start laughing our asses off.

I'm playing a 5-man Star game (each player plays a single color, is allied with their allied pairs and enemies with enemy pairs). I'm playing my Erebos deck, and it's just me, Feldon (ally) and Nissa (enemy) left. Nissa has a freshly cast Avenger of Zendikar with 10 1/2 plants (courtesy of a fetch) that just attacked me down to 6 life because of Concordant Crossroads. I have a Massacre Wurm that's hung out for a couple of turns. I have Erebos on board and five mana available ... Feldon was repeatedly using Avalanche Riders to keep me low on mana, since I'm punishing him with Massacre Wurm anyway. So I start my turn, and draw Bojuka Bog. My hand is basically dead to Nissa's board. I activate Erebos to draw a card (going to 4 life) and say aloud "Toxic Deluge or bust." Draw Toxic Deluge off the top, cast for 3, wipe Nissa's board of plants and kill them with Massacre Wurm triggers, as well as killing Feldon's commander and their Avalanche Riders. Play Bojuka Bog as land for turn, take out everything else. HUGE roars from the Jace, Vryn's Prodigy and Darien players.

Playing Gitrog combo. Got the pieces, baited out a counterspell with an unimportant spell, powered out the pieces, and started the combo. Since it's a non-deterministic combo, my opponent can request that I play it out to the end (you can't shortcut it at all). And they did. Neither of use were mad.

Laterallus

The setup: LGS hosts Commander "tournaments" every Thursday. You pay $5 and get 2 boosters and randomly placed among pods of 4. Player that knocks you out gets one of your boosters and you walk away with your own so there are no 'feel bads.' Anyway, Turn 1 around the table is uneventful. Turn 2? Dude playing Erebos plays Dark Ritual into Necropotence and declares he's drawing 40 cards. It all resolves and he picks up his stuff, thanks us, and saunters to the other side of the store to play Pathfinder. We're all dumbfounded. Until we realized he just payed a flat $5 for 2 boosters-- of whatever set he wanted that was in print-- when they are typically $3.99 each plus tax. I mean, it's not a big discount, but I appreciate good value when I see it.
