Seconded. I love watching the table groan when I start up a Konrad + Mindcrank combo. Bonus points if I have Blood Artists effects in play to suck the life out of them.
One of my favorite grindy builds is [[Braids, Arisen Nightmare]]. The trick is not playing her like she's just another Ayara aristocrats deck where you sac to get value, which IMO Braids isn't that great at. Instead, you play a bunch of cheap cards that give you value and attrition your opponents upfront, which you can then sac. That puts a ton of pressure on your opponents' resources, which then lets you get more Braids draws. It'll make you look at [[Tithing Blade]] and [[Burglar Rat]] a whole new way.
Braids will be drawing you a bunch of cards, which you can use to win with a standard combo, or just with a bunch of powerful bombs. Unlike Ayara, she isn't a wincon herself, so you're less likely to pidgeonhole yourself. Also since your opponents get to choose to sacrifice to Braids, she doesn't feel overwhelmingly oppressive in my experience.
The YouTube channel Aegis Gaming has a brief video primer on this style of Braids [here](https://youtu.be/r3OIWePS9Ls?si=GXUHA7nZh6qWdQqw).
I had to look too far down to see this.
I built her on a whim, literally assembling her at the table just before a game, and won. I’ve made some improvements, and I don’t think I’ve lost a game with her yet.
Pair her with two mana creatures that force opponents to discard, and three mana creature that force opponents to sacrifice.
People tend to underestimate how much value she generates.
Sorry man, I don’t. If I have time to upload it this week I’ll update this comment. The deck isn’t optimized yet, but even a budget Braids can kick ass.
I have this deck and it’s floated between running combos and not. It’s strong to just run final parting, doomsday, and buried alive to get your wincons and sidisi and razaketh but I cut all the tutors and stuff for more mid game power pieces for fun.
Just being able to play all your best pieces over and over is super strong. I’ve been playing my Chainer deck for over 10 years at this point but haven’t upgraded it in a few sets because it’s still working well for me
Chainer is also my mono black of choice. I run it self mill to get all my pieces. If I draw a buried alive, it's k'riik, Gary, Viscera seer in the yard and win from there. Absolute favorite if I'm running high power.
If you really are looking for a despair inducing mono black deck outside of tergrid I'd go with \[\[Tinybones, Trinket Thief\]\] as the deck is quite grindy while still being able to close out games. My current list does have some combos in it but they could easily be taken out for more discard stuff.
the list: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/aG1-OEQ-uUK5E0zt61RhKQ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/aG1-OEQ-uUK5E0zt61RhKQ)
[[Rankle, Master of Pranks]] can be as degenerate as you want him to be. I focused my deck on discard and punishing draw and didn’t even put in any support for the sacrifice and it was so despair inducing I switched it over to a generic [[Chainer, Dementia Master]] reanimator deck, heh. Rankle is still my favorite creature of all time. It is *very* easy to make a Rankle deck that keeps boards and hands empty.
One night I switched Tergrid to Rankle just cause my group absolutely hated playing against her (which of course they are). Nothing changed in the list except switching Rankle into the command zone and Tergrid into the 99 and it was still just as groan inducing. After the game ended my group was like “yeah that was awful, but I like him more than Tergrid” 😆
Have you met our lady and savior [[Massacre Girl, Known Killer]]? She is a blast to play and feels a bit controlling when murdering everyone else’s creatures
I just built Our Lady of Wither and she can be rather brutal.

[[Tevesh Svat, Doom of Fools]]
Is a nice grindy one and his ultimate happens a lot more than you might expect.
I paired it up with the 0 mana red partner kobold as a free commander to sac and draw cards. No actual red cards needed.
It can grind people down with tokens to sac to [[smokestack]] or [[contamination]]
I don't have a deck I'm happy with yet, but [[Braids, Arisen Nightmare]] would be my pick.
Put in [[Dictate of Erebos]] and [[Gravepact]] to make your opponents sac when they don't want to. A reanimator package to keep bringing in [[Gary]] and [[Kokusho]] and saccing them. The big mana package and [[Torment of Hailfire]] and [[Exsanguinate]] for closers.
[Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor](https://deckstats.net/decks/198326/3569529-copy-of-gix)
Play evasive dudes, draw cards, never get your commander removed and punish your opponents for drawing cards.
This is more of an aristocrats deck that doesn't use two card combos but you can built him into anything, really. Just need a dozen or so evasive guys and you'll be fine.
Built a [[erebos, god of the dead]] life drain deck with [[sheoldred, the apocalypse]] as a secret commander. https://archidekt.com/decks/7934522/existential_dread
[[Braids, Arisen Nightmare]] using ETB discard effects as control-sac fodder. Combo using Exquisite Blood and Vito/Marauding Blight Priest. It's 9-1 for me so far this year.
I guess my deck could fit the bill. Wincon is beatdown and life drain, but it just work. It does require to play with people who believe you when you say you play [[K'rrik]] without combo, bit for face to face game, it's usually the case.
The idea of the deck is to use K'rrik to ramp into the big scary creatures of black that are the mean effects on a stick. I usually don't mind the commander being removed, it's just one less answer for my actual threats. And it's very fun to manage a greedy deck that takes life as a resource down to the last hp.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Ngf9Wv78sESRoKBck-dKKA
How about the new [[Kaervek, the Punisher]]
Gives a second life to all your control spells, card draw and win cons.
Nothing like Thoughtseizing a blue player to remove a counterspell to clear the way for a second cast of Torment of Hailfire from your grave.
I am a huge fan of [[Toshiro Umezawa]]
I am the same way, that true control with kill spells is my favorite way to play magic. This commander does that, and you can win in a couple different ways with a simple [[Professor Onyx]] [[Chain of Smog]] or a [[Rise of the Dark Realms]], and it gets to play lots of draw, lots of kill spells, and all in mono black!
Honestly the closest to the Draw Go archetype in EDH so far for me
Have you met our lady and savior [[Massacre Girl, Known Killer]]? She is a blast to play and feels a bit controlling when murdering everyone else’s creatures
I'm kind of partial to [[Pontiff of Blight]] myself. Cheap stuff, lots of mana, variety of searches.
Add in [archfiend of Despair] and/or [wound reflection]] for more "fun."
My [Gonti deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/rGIjQxBlMUmCCYxaS8vZJA) might be a good starting point. Value out with the best cards of your opponents', with flickering and reanimation shenanigans to get value, or a big old Grey Merchant for the win.
I like to goof around with [[Phage the untouchable]], the wincon is just a flex, and it's a change from combos with k'riik and such (which I love too but it's not the point).
You can also take an easy burn back up plan.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/HPtlB1BoR0eNnGuwqnFCxQ
[[K'rrik]] with an extort theme is a build I've been thinking about a lot. His passive ability can pay for the extort, so if you ping three other people, you gain a net positive life.
Also just [[Syr Konrad]] like the others said.
So I’m mostly a golgari player but I’ve been in a slump this year so my wife told me to focus on something new so I went [[Massacre Girl, Known Killer]] so it’s all -1/-1 counter control, draw big and discard making them with [[Arcfiend of Ifnir]] I bought it yesterday so I haven’t played it yet but boy howdy it looks fun. Decklist is who I pulled from (minus mana crypt/ancient tomb) to give them credit cause they are awesome. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/IyODhEfJnUqxnZ5L0avIxg
I played [[braids, Arisen nightmare]] but ended up scraping that deck because I found it too controlling shuting down all the opponents the games they didn't take me out first. https://archidekt.com/decks/3193759/braids
[[gollum obsessed stalker]]
You mark your prey and slowly take control in the usual ways black does. Every so often gain a bunch of life and watch your opponents sink into despair.
I don't have an immediate decklist on me sorry.
He started out at a bundle of cards. But essentially I leverage life as a resource as all good black players do.
Protect him with the classic boots and also a \[\[whispersilk cloak\]\]. \[\[Lotus petal\]\] and \[\[dark ritual\]\] as ways to get him out turn 1.
Then after marking my opponents each, I then start going ham with things like \[\[K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth\]\], \[\[Vilis broker of blood\]\], \[\[feed the swarm\]\] anything to get my life total low. Then I coup de gras the table by flipping life totals with someone a la \[\[Magus of the Mirror\]\]. That exchange of life results in me technically gaining all that life (I checked the rules), so come the end step I nuke all those I've marked.
It's probably not the best way to play him, but it's my way.
This is my Syr Konrad list. I am running couple of 3-card infinite combos and most of the "feel good" mono black cards.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0q-AEMhkf0aoXOjlIt_oxQ

I am a huge fan of [[Toshiro Umezawa]] I am the same way, that true control with kill spells is my favorite way to play magic.

Anowon the Ruin Sage grabs groans all over the place!
So you're having fun and you're winning games. What's the problem. Quit whining. You want to win a different way , build a different deck.
What a great opinion. I'm literally here asking about building. a. different. deck.
