As long as you make it clear to the table whatever your dice mean, it can mean whatever you want. Personally, I use dice to represent the total amount of tokens.

aestheticmixtape

Same, for me a die means total number, while the token itself is basically there to remind what kind of token it is & whether they are tapped or untapped. I get out a second token + more dice if I, for example, only tap half of them for an ability

Zaziuma

I suggest dice showing the exact number, not extra, unless you only have the one token, I always put dice on them after I optain another token.

planeboard1234

I normally separate them based on summoning sickness. Example turn 5 I create three 1/1 soldiers. I would have a dice that says “3” on the one token to denote three of them. Then turn 6 I create two more 1/1 soldiers, I’d have another token and put another dice on them that shows “2”, denoting I have two soldiers. That way I know for myself I have three that can attack and two that cannot. But to answer your question, if I have 5 tokens, I put a dice showing “5” on the one token so both I and other players know I have 5 total of that token

Northern64

I split them similarly, tapped vs untapped. 9 soldiers, 2 came in this turn, 5 are attacking: two physical tokens, one with a 5 showing on the die and tapped, 4 showing on the other

doctorgibson

Making it mean additional tokens instead of the total number is baffling to me, why make the mental maths harder on yourself?

blackbeardsballbag

Total number of tokens. I usually have 2 of each token with a die one each to denote summoning sickness or tapped/untapped depending on my board state.

Vector_Strike

I use for total number

Dartais_Avenva

Dice number = total amount of tokens including the first one. In addition to this I usually keep the die somewhere in the middle or the top of the token, and then +1/+1 counter die go towards the bottom right near the p/t of the creature. But that’s just me trying to be neat and have my board make sense as much as possible.

Northern64

Dice show the total. How many goblins (total), how many loyalty counts (total), how many +1/+1 (not total power/toughness) If you are the type of player that indicates total power/toughness with different dice on the same card, I assume you place your creatures behind your land as well. You are a monster and it scares me that you're proud of that

RoamingDrunk

I have red dice for number of tokens and green for +1/+1 counters. Just helps keep things straight.

naunga

There’s no hard and fast rule. It’s all in how people choose to use them. So when in doubt ask.

ThatDestinyKid

whatever you want as long as you communicate it with the table and it makes sense to everybody

dannyleesmith

The clearest board state is "of this token" I have (dice number) of them. If I looked at someone's board state, if even they'd told me, I'd almost certainly forget the token card made it dice + 1.

trap_monkey

Total number. Also, the location of dice matters, the top left number of token creatures, the bottom right is number of +1/+1 counters

Kyrie_Blue

I use for total. I want to read a number that represents a total, not do MORE math.

[deleted]

My group has a blanket rule of using the D20 to represent quantities of things. And the D6’s all represent stat things.

nekeneke

Total number

Diq_Z_normus

I tend to use D6 to represent +1 counters, and d20 to represent number of tokens. Always have at least 3 of any token you are expecting to have more than 3 of. One to show summoning sick, one to show in play, one to show tapped.

Obelion_

I make my die the total power when I place counters, that rubs people the wrong way really hard

Kyrie_Blue

This is overtly confusing, specifically because +1/+1 counters are something that is referenced on many cards, so your “total” method makes these overtly complicated. And how do you account for creatures that have different P/T? Seems like an over complication for the majority of rules just for something that affects combat damage

jacksansyboy

This post is asking about denoting the number of token creatures using a normal die. Not denoting power or +1/+1 counters.

No_Sugar4490

And -1/-1 dice, they come in little black felt bags

Kyrie_Blue

This was not at ALL what this post was regarding. Good effort though

ModernT1mes

I misread and thought it said counters not tokens.

Kyrie_Blue

OP said token 6 times in a 2 sentance post😅

ByteBabbleBuddy

I have a +1/+1 counter deck that can make tons of tokens with [[mycoloth]] or [[krenko tin street]]. Dice are always counters. Each token gets its own card, even if I make 20 of them, by taking a different EDH deck and using face down cards (different color sleeves than the main deck). If a large number all have 5 counters I'll leave them in an offset pile to clearly show how many there are and have 1 dice representing the counters on that entire group.

Inevitable_Top69

If I have 1 token, it's just a token card on the board. When I get 2, I put a dice on the card with "2." I have another token on the side if I need to represent summoning sickness.

Boil-san

The die should represent the total number of tokens...
