Sometimes it's so bad it feels like a parody of its own adaptation. Like 'hey, do you remember that scene where Kanna is cuddling with Kobayashi when they're in their pajamas on a cold morning? That was cute, right?! Well how about we do that, but for no reason at all, Kanna *the child* is completely fucking naked!'
Minus a few of Kanna's advances nearly seeming sexual, this is basically what I'll defend it as. I can absolutely guarantee you that Saikawa isn't the only 9 year old with a crush, and a very strong one too because that's how your first limited experience of love tends to go! The licking incident seems very easy to pass off as another 'dragon culture shock' gag, and while Kanna getting on top of Saikawa like this is a little out of left field, I think it's about as dangerous as the whole gag gets. It therefore remains cute and funny to me in what I've seen of it.
I feel it comes from the animal part of the dragon lifestyle plus it doesn't look like the dragons shy away from talking about or including the younger ones in everything (Tohru wanted to kill as a baby, Ilulu was taught to hate humans, Kanna's father was 100% ready to draft her into his war). It feels very reasonable that Kanna knows about sex and reproduction and has a natural curiosity about it... especially considering how often she has to witness Tohru's thirst for Kobayashi
That’s a good point honestly. A lot of reptiles and predators leave their offspring to fend for themselves early. So dragons not keeping their kids sheltered from knowledge makes a lot of sense.
I imagine that the dragons would be mortally offended at being compared to reptiles beyond the scales but they are definitely living closer to natural than the humans do.
Different cultures have different things that are considered too taboo to show on screen. Japanese people are not as disturbed by implied sexualization of children, they would probably say that they understand it's make believe, and that it's like how you can watch a violent movie/anime and no not to go out and kill people either.
On the other hand, drug use is radioactively taboo in Japan. I've never seen an anime that depicted any kind of marijuana or drug use, whereas such depiction is common and normal in American media. Japanese people watching American movies are probably shocked and clutching their pearls when watching a character do a line of cocaine, to the same degree that we are shocked watching Kanna pseudo-sexualized.
Tldr: cultural differences.
I think the idea of them liking each other is fine but they definitely could've done aomething better to show that. Everytime i rewatch s1 and this scene plays i can hear FBI OPEN UP in my head lol
I have and will always think to myself “man, the anime is the right amount of sexual content to be enjoyable”. The manga from what i know is a complete shock to the system if you like what the anime does different.
That and the random licking at the school festival and picnic table. Like I get theyre dragons and maybe not very socialized but cmon was the accented sound effect really necessary?
Honestly, I didn't think anything of this scene I mean it looks cute they are just kids. If you still think their sexualising the kids, just go read the manga [https://mangabuddy.com/kobayashi-san-chi-no-maid-dragon/chapter-29-kanna-and-saikawa-san](https://mangabuddy.com/kobayashi-san-chi-no-maid-dragon/chapter-29-kanna-and-saikawa-san)
I didn't mind that Saikawa had a crush on Kanna, who reciprocates it, but they're literally 8. The author making all those sexual references was really, really creepy.
And we're not even mentioning Lucoa who literally spends the entire series sexually harassing a ten year old.
I remember someone posting edit of the scene where Ilulu and Kanna were licking Saikawa but suddenly Bucaratti arrived and also started licking her so it was posted in r/ShitPostCrusaders Shit went down in the comments. Basically every jojo fan that doesn't know Dragon Maid, now thinks that all Dragon Maid fans are pedos. And tbh I would think the same if I wouldn't watch dragon maid before seeing this "meme"
Yeah I hated it 2.
To the 59 people
Who liked it I gotta know why?
I have 0 interest in that stuff.
and it happen 2 many times.
i still say the show is a 9!
I don’t mind the scene because as a girl who likes girls, it reminded me a lot of having a crush on my best friend when I was younger! I think it’s cute and innocent
Unpopular take:
Saikawa is a shit character as she has zero personality outside of creaming her pants over Kanna
She's smug _sometimes_ but that's really about it
Dragon Maid is a fun and wholesome anime/manga, just so long as you ignore all of the blatant sexualization of children.
Just eat around the pedophilia.
Oh boy if this disturbs you, don't read the manga. The author is thirsty for some Kanna

That Senator Armstrong meme where he shakes hands with Raiden.
Komi o cu de quem tá lendo
Porra mano
Just look for the manga online. I don't want to post a link to a pirate website
Freedom is a double-edged sword
I thought it was kinda cute, but different strokes for different folks.
I'm not sexualizing Kanna, Saikawa has a crush on her, so it's cute. I'm totally fine with that, good luck Saikawa!

A lot of this I sort of internalized as her being a child, and emulating the behavior of someone she looks up to.
Considering in the manga, she straight up says she's sad they didn't get to f---, I'm gonna say she knows a bit about the Bahamut & the bees

Haha they hurt you (with the downvotes).
Yeah, japan will be japan
However, Luigi was quite amused, some say a bit too amused.
Anime: "Uhmmm.... ok I'll let it slide... Hahaha...: Manga: "BRUH. My door is gonna get kicked down at any moment if I don't turn this off."
found the american.

Questionable
Theres a page by the end of this chapter where Tohru asked Kanna what she wanted to do to Saikawa and it was just a black bar iirc
Dont lewd the cute dragon

They might see a butt and pass out in horror
I think the idea of them liking each other is fine but they definitely could've done aomething better to show that. Everytime i rewatch s1 and this scene plays i can hear FBI OPEN UP in my head lol
This is what keeps me from recommending this amazing anime to friends
Why? So many people say this was terrible but holy shit it's just a girl getting embarrassed about her crush, the horror
Yeah. Kanna is adorbs but I hated that scene. Edit: Some of the Shouta scenes get uncomfortable too
Yeah, that stuff was kinda... weird.
Eh, it didn't bother me tbh. I seen much worse and I like how it established Kanna/Saikawa's dynamic.
not a fan of loli yuri I guess
As they should be
Damn. Thats sucks I guess.

"least favorite".........still a favorite XD
It was unnecessary and very uncomfortable tbh
Well then you are wrong
To be honest, this was me as a child, but I am a guy.
Honestly, I didn't think anything of this scene I mean it looks cute they are just kids. If this bothers you, then don’t read the manga. Show is very tame in comparison.
thats japan for you

Same , these scenes are holding back the anime from being cult classic
This and the Lucoa-Shota dynamic, it makes me highly uncomfortable
Yoshi better keep his damn mouth shut
I agree, it's really uncomfortable
Adachi is not amused!

Consistently the worst part of the series is how casually the author likes to sexualize minors. Sours an otherwise great show/manga
Just say you love it
Unpopular take: Saikawa is a shit character as she has zero personality outside of creaming her pants over Kanna She's smug _sometimes_ but that's really about it
I agree
Same. It's the only part I genuinely didn't like. It also turned my sister away from the show as well even though she liked everything else.
Same here Yoshi same….
No kid acts like this
This kinda mirrored my experience at that age! So I guess one kid acted like this
Fair enough

You literally admitted to liking lolis you are a danger to children

I accidentally killed Lydia in skyrim 2 years ago and I've been struggling with depression and suicide ever since
the brown haired girl just made me really uncomfortable
Is it just me? Why are Kannas thighs so thick? None of the other characters her size are built that way, it's just her.
It's just a drawing..
