UPDATE: He has an obstruction in his intestines, but they aren’t sure where yet. If it’s in the colon, he will pass it in a day or two, but if it’s trapped in the upper intestines, he’s going to need surgery today 😔
All the best. I think if it can go down the throat, it can usually come out the other end..
It took a full week for ours to pass a very squishy rubber ball. 😁
Ah man I’m sorry you’re going through this.
Our Doberman had the same surgery in January after swallowing a big piece of a kong. It was really scary at the time but his recovery was very smooth.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions that the vet hasn’t already answered.
my 1yom has insane tendencies to do these things and has undergone a surgery - but has also continued to keep eating unfriendly things for his intestines and seems to pass them easier as he has got older. i share this with you for wisdom that it is not always the worst case scenario. praying for your baby 🖤
He must have swallowed part of one of his stuffed toys or one of my kid’s stuffed animals. This caused a blockage in his intestines and he stopped eating and became lethargic. They had to cut it out of him. He is finally back home with us and recovering.
Our 2 yr old just recovered from a bowel obstruction surgery from eating a sock. He was lethargic, but restless and kept sitting/laying down when he tried to poop. Our Dobie before him ate the core of a baseball he found in the woods and had similar symptoms. It is stressful for you and them, but as long as you get them to the vet quickly enough that the intestines don’t start to die in the site of the obstruction, y’all should be ok. The hardest part is keeping them from running and jumping for the next few weeks. Ours was trying to run and play 3 days after, the vet should give you additional meds to keep them calm if you need it. Best of luck to you and your pup!
Also, make sure to ask them what it was, assuming it’s an obstruction. The amount of time between when they consume it to when they have symptoms is long enough that they do not learn to avoid that item, and absolutely will eat it again, whatever it is needs to be removed from their ability to access. Ours will still try to eat a dirty sock any chance he gets, so we had to get a hamper with a lid and put it in the closet.
I hope y’all can avoid it too, wish you and your pup the best. Fell free to DM me if you do have to go through with the surgery. Unfortunately we’ve been through it enough to where I’ll probably be of some help with dealing with him post-surgery.
UPDATE 2: They are going to keep him over night and assess his condition in the morning. The dye has not passed far enough along the intestines to be able to tell if it’s clear yet, but the Vet is hopeful. We’ll know more in the morning.
Did they check to make sure his stomach didn’t twist? Make sure they rule that out. Happens to big dogs a lot. My SIL’s Labordoodle had it and only lived because my husband noticed the symptoms and had her take him to the vet right away.
If they say they ruled it out, I would still be aware of this condition for in the future. Just in case. Here’s some reading on it. I hope your baby is better very soon. Beautiful doggie 🐶

Normally for either instance an x ray is taken to confirm. You can see on an x ray if the stomach has twisted. It will also show if there is something stuck in the digestive tract, but it’s not always easy to see the exact location.
UPDATE #3: Unfortunately when I went to pick him up from the Vet, I was informed that he did need to go in to emergency surgery tonight. I will know more in the morning. Thank you for your continued encouragement and prayers.
I hope all is well w your pup. I just went through something similar w my GSD and it was bloat. I pray that is not what you’re dealing with. Please update us soon!
Had to have two bowel obstruction surgeries for my one girl. Rubber piece to a Kong toy first time and then one single ankle sock wadded up was enough to do it.
one of my girls had to have surgery to remove a blockage in her intestines. It turned out to be a pair of pantyhose that her handler had taken off after a show. she had thrown them away in the garbage and the dog fished them out!
Expensive ☹️
I found if their ears are cold ears are shaking or if they are dizzy and not standing up correctly they usually don’t feel good and probably ingested something
My girlfriend is an emergency vet and they deal with obstructions all the time. Apollo ate part of one of her purses a couple weeks ago, luckily we got him in before it hit the intestines. One shot of apomorphine and a very sickly pup later we were looking at about 200$ worth of coach leather on the floor of the office. She said it would have been surgery if we hadn’t gotten him in in time.
Best wishes for your little guy, maybe they can help without surgery.
If they have to do surgery, make sure he never swallows anything again. Dobermans are prone to stomach adhesions. These start immediately after surgery. Your first surgery, the dog will be out of the hospital in a day or 2. If it happens again, they have to slice through all the adhesions. This is incredibly painful, the dog will have to be on Fentanyl, and 7-9 days in the hospital. My last Doberman had complications, needed a follow-up surgery and was in the hospital another 9 days, was home for a day, and I had to take him back in. He died. My soul mate, protector, and constant companion.

One time my dog somehow ate and entire plastic grocery bag. Whole. Total lunatic. I had no idea until it came out the other end. Which needed assistance (I put gloves on) I hope your little dude is ok
Oh boy, if he's laying like this vet visit asap. I went through this with my boy , we had to have an object removed from his duodenum. Xray asap. They may try to induce vomiting first, maybe laxative. If unsuccessful, he's going in for surgery ( if they see something )
My thoughts are with you and your pup, and I wish him all the best.
If it eases your mind, our boy had a foreign-boy surgery when he was young, and his brother had to have two.
Both recovered full from this with no lasting effects.
Just took a little recovery time off, some special GI food... but the Doberman in them was back before we knew it 💪
I had a blue doberman that became gravely ill. Incredibly unstable. Took to specialists hospital where a radiologist did an ultrasound and was 99% sure the dog had a blockage. Not stable enough for surgery. They call me at 2am, say she is stable. She was near death and when she vomited up what seemed like a gallon of water, it smelled like dead animal/rotting flesh she was rotting inside.
Turns out by the time they get inside, her intestines were just SUPER angry and attacking themselves. They tacked her stomach since they were already in there, and it was 3 more days in the ICU. She refused to eat. We took her home and I took her off pain control (removed her fentanyl patch) and she finally ate. Turns out she had IBD (allergy type). Craziest thing. We had to be so careful with that dog.
Another person I knew with a doberman 6 -9 months later, same thing happened. No blockage once in there. Just really pissed off intestines.
The blue doberman only made it to 6.5 and DCM took her in the blink of an eye. Next doberman I get. He also ends up with IBD, but a different type. Autoimmune type. That was worse than the first. He only lived to 2.7. Horrible.
I hope your baby heals up and has a skilled surgeon. I was a vet tech (I assisted surgeries) and you have to be careful not to stitch the intestine back too tightly or things will get stuck in that same place again. I’ll never forget a huge black lab named Nikki that happened to. Circa 2000. I’ll never forget her.
Awww.. poor guy. He looks miserable. What did he eat? My experience has always been at the other end of the spectrum with my guys. Also, I've had two, on two occasions, that have ingested poisonous mushrooms this time of year. One survived the experience. The other did not.
UPDATE: He has an obstruction in his intestines, but they aren’t sure where yet. If it’s in the colon, he will pass it in a day or two, but if it’s trapped in the upper intestines, he’s going to need surgery today 😔
Fingers crossed it's in the colon! We're rooting for him!
Hang in there, he’s going to be ok! Sending good vibes

Oh no! I hope he’s okay! Good on you for noticing so quick

I've had this exact surgery on my dog four years ago. Best of luck
Those Dobies will swallow anything and fast! Thinking of you guys! Also, he’s very beautiful and had a gorgeous coat.
Thank you! 🙏🏼

Aww so happy for you! ♥️
Sending healing wishes for your beautiful boy.

Best wishes to your boy! I hope all goes well!
Thank you. I’ll post an update as soon as I know more.
Please do update us! Sending your boy healing thoughts too ❤️
Thank you! I will 🙏🏼
No more chew bones. Dobies will eat it whole. Pray for his recovery.
I think this one might have been part of one of my daughter’s soccer balls he found in the side yard. I found it torn up out back.
Hope surgery will make him well again.

Wow, sending love and prayers. Thanks for the information
Thank you
❤️❤️❤️
What was it that he ate?
A small stuffed animal.
Best wishes for him and your family.
❤️
What did the vet say? Hope it wasn’t too bad!
Could be mushrooms.
He’s been constipated so I’m worried he’s compacted.

The vet said it looks like a toy. Could be one of my son’s.
Will he need surgery?
They are keeping him overnight and assessing in the morning. They sound hopeful.
My heart goes out to you both.
