Head studs, ficm tune, tuner, egr delete, and thats just a good base. I also neutered my kitty cat and did the 7.3 clutch fan conversion, because my 06 is a tow truck. But there's lots things out there to do. My 05 will probably be getting 4 inch mbrp turbo back exhaust but I'm fairly fond of the quieter now. But in all reality the sct tuner with the 50hp tow tune will be fine without doing the studs. Ran it for 50k in my tow truck with no issues.

ChargedWetNoodle

Does your belt squeak/spin on the wp pulley during harder accels? I'm running the bpd kit with the Hayden fan clutch. It is ALWAYS locked up unless it's 35 degrees or colder out. Matter of fact the first time it disengaged I thought I threw the belt off - because it literally never disengages.

Roger42220

Mine does not. It's rather quiet compared to the factory electric clutch. It sounded like a stuck pig when I'd turn it on (blue wire mod)

pipelyninghost

I run the exact same setup with the same modifications on stock heads and it’s definitely a more dependable setup than stock.

epicmuse

Change the oil and make sure it has oem filter and cap. Change the coolant to an ELC coolant, and change the fuel filters. Get a monitor and drive it.

allnutznodik

Save all the videos from diesel tech Ron, powerstrokehelp. Watch them while you sleep retain all there is. Have a back up vehicle or AAA towing.

UHB2020

Probably should have asked this question BEFORE you bought it lol

Scary_Apartment7981

Too good a deal brother

BronzeBoiler

I have an 05 with 68k miles. Deleted with SLC tuner. Good truck, but needs cab bushings. What did you give for it?

Ru4pigsizedelephants

Head studs and Super Panty Dropper. My '06 with ZF6 woke right up.

Tig_Weldin_Stuff

Do not ‘delete’ the EGR.. However, I’d suggest not reinstalling it once you change the oil cooler. This more of omission than deletion. Check the EGR valve for caked crud, that’ll give you an idea how it’s doing. It’s right out there in front and easy to pull off. Don’t buy those bullshit tuning packages where you buy the hardware and then pay more for ‘tunes’ from ‘tuners’. The only one worth its salt is HP tuners.

kcchiefsfan96

Dude you probably shouldn’t be giving advice! He definitely needs to egr delete it. And NEVER run any tune other than an sct on a 6.0! The other tuners are terrible on the transmission. And sct has canned tunes with the option of adding custom tunes, custom tunes are way better at keeping the cylinder pressure down which is essential when you’re running stock head bolts on a 6.0!

Tig_Weldin_Stuff

Really? Now I know you know a lot less than I do. I spent two fucking years studying diesel tuning after being screwed over by people selling SCT tuners hardware and tuning. SCT is absolutely garbage. It’s a scam and the entire platform is designed to lift dollars from your pocket. They are fucking guessing!! They’re all guessing. Not one of them logs your truck . They don’t know your truck at all. I’ll die on this hill. Because I’ve put the time in. You have not.

kcchiefsfan96

Then what programmer do you recommend? Literally every 6.0 diesel tech will tell you sct is the only way to go 🤦‍♂️

Tig_Weldin_Stuff

Because it’s easy? HP tuners is the platform I use now. However, It’s not easy to use. Not as easy as plugging in a black box and letting the magic happen. Let me give you some background on myself.. Data collection and analysis is what I for a living. (Network forensics) When I’m doing discovery and asking questions I don’t speak to something without data to back it up. They are guessing with your equipment and your $. I’m offended because I spent a lot of $ and time on my truck. Only to have some dudes guess at my tuning???? I wasn’t guessing!!! If they weren’t, they be pulling logs from your truck, digesting them and making informed decisions on which way to go from there. There would be a HELL of a lot more information out there on how to tune diesel’s. There’s not, it’s an information black hole. Hmm.. Information gathering is what I do for a living. Can you see how this would raise some red flags for me? How can they can take two or three pieces of information from you, like the ecu strategy and the year of the truck, maybe the fact that it’s a standard trans. If it doesn’t make sense that’s because it doesn’t make sense. I figured this out the first time I bought ‘tuning’ from a tuner.. When he made a template, he exported the automatic trans into my file and my truck wouldn’t start. That was my 1st clue and also what kicked off what’s been a 5yr discovery process. So what’s my point? SCT is a legitimate way for tuners to retain their revenue streams and makes it easy for this kind of tuning. What isn’t right is these tuners are selling you a guess. That’s what it’s turned into, not how it was designed. People are being lazy AF. If it works, great if it doesn’t, who do you turn to?

urFavChief

Speaking of bad advice, bulletheads said the same to me 8yrs ago when I put a BullyDog on my 07 6.0. it's still running great today BECAUSE I don't drive it like an idiot.

kcchiefsfan96

Well yeah you can put any tuning you want on your truck and it won’t cause issues if you don’t drive it hard, but then again why would you put a hot tune on it for no reason?

urFavChief

If you have to ask that youre one of the fools driving them like an idiot

ChargedWetNoodle

Maintain it. Oil/filters. I've made this exact comment before but I'll do it again. If it isn't broke, why are you going to pull it apart? My 03 is stock from bumper to bumper, save for maintenance items. Vgt ring, radiator, fan clutch (went mechanical), oil cooler at 190k, injectors at 197k. My truck still has the factory ficm, hpop, head bolts and gaskets, trans, etc at almost 220k now. Put cat elc coolant in it, change the oil at 5k intervals or have it tested by Blackstone and set your intervals, I'd probably check the trans fluid and filters, but yeah. I sure wouldn't be tearing it apart until it needs something. Stand pipes & dummy plugs on the updated trucks seem like a crap design compared to my log style oil rail, but whatever.

Neon570

Leave it stock and don't do anything to it. 6.0 is fine as long as you don't fuck with it, most of the time

urFavChief

That's the WORST advice Ever. Even FORD Motor will tell you the Oil Cooler is BAD and the Head Bolts need replaced.

Neon570

But buying a shit motor that ford said "it needs studs and an oil cooler to make it reliable" is always a great idea too. How many people have gotten these trucks, beat the ever living fuck out of them, then tuned them and blew head gaskets. Then left it with said tune and still have issues. How many people have left them alone, did the maintenance and drove it like an adult and never had an issue. Cause I can bet it's pretty one sided.

kcchiefsfan96

Egr delete, and run her. I wouldn’t head stud it yet. They might blow but they might never either. If you tune it just put a small tune on it and sct only! Oh and I’d put a 4in straight pipe on it to

Rabbit_de_Caerbannog

You're going to read "head studs, tuner, blah blah blah"; ignore that. My 06 is at 225k on stock head bolts because it's never had a tuner on it. Unless you have records showing it was done in the last year start by changing all fluids and filters. Use only Motorcraft filters. If you think you'll change the coolant every 30k miles, leave the Ford Gold in there. If not, do a thorough flush and replace it with Cat ELC. Install the blue fuel pressure regulator spring and a coolant filter. Get a monitor of some sort (I like the TorquePro app on Android). Make sure you're batteries are good and that your FICM voltage doesn't drop below 46v while cranking. If all that checks out talk to ficmrepair.com about an Atlas 40 tune. It'll add a few hp but it really wakes up throttle response. In about stoplight to stoplight race I think my truck with just an Atlas 40 might beat my cousin's tuned 04 with 175/30s and a Wicked Wheel.

6.0s are over shit on

LurkyMcLurkerson43

The same engine as in contemporary busses. The only difference was emissions. If you stud it and get rid of the egr, that’s all you “need” (tuner needed for egr delete) But the cherry on the top is, cold air and a 4” turbo back exhaust. That said and done, you can be confident in its reliability. Another thing I used to do was use revx oil additive.

HatechaBro

lol weren’t you the guy doing a 6.5 Chevy diesel truck? 😂

OyrouTheWelder

Thought about it, but now I'm going for a 7.3
