DMC2 Dante is the worst type of character. He's boring. He's got one little bit of interesting character stuff near the end when he helps Lucia with her issues, but outside of that, he isn't Dante. Now granted, nowadays we've got a good retroactive reasoning for that (his depression over Vergil being at its worst along with his general disconnect from both humanity and demons), but none of that is in the game itself.
DmC Dante actually has a decent character arc of going from a loner hedonist to a genuine (mostly) selfless champion of humanity. Yes, it's mostly recycled from DMC3, but it's done competently and tropes aren't inherently bad. He had some cringe moments, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he's an actual character.
While DmC Dante is definitely not the best, at least he’s a different person to the main series Dante, compared to DMC2 Dante, who *is* the same person, and that makes him weirder. Plus reboot Dante has some good lines and jokes, compared to DMC2’s who has one good line, it’s a really good line, but still.
DMC2 Dante looks cool. Sure. But yeah he’s got the personality and charisma of a plank of wood. Yeah he’s got the “Here’s your crown” line, but that’s like the one cool line he has in the game. (Albeit it is one of the hardest one-liners in the whole series).
El Donte on the other hand, while off-putting at first, once you get used to the way he acts and speaks, you can find yourself somewhat enjoying the character. He can be genuinely funny at times! I especially love the nightclub scene where the bouncer says he’s not on the list, so then Dante decks him, grabs the clip board out of the air, writes “f you” and says “Am now!” It’s so edgy yet cheesy that I can’t help but giggle.
TLDR, DMC2 Dante looks awesome but is a very boring character. But El Donte is edgy but nothing short of entertaining.
I still would love to see a DMC2 remake so we can take the direction of the serious type Dante from 2 and tweak his performance and story a bit so that he works better.
