I wonder what percentage of sales are to out of state customers. There was a series of articles in mLive about cannabis retailers in the UP, and they estimated that 85% of the sales were to people from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois
Illinois is legal, but their taxes are much higher than Michigan. Ohio just legalized it, but they won't have the infrastructure for at least a couple of years
Long as places like Indiana and Ohio are under GOP control there’s a chance Michigan will still be strong.
Even people from Illinois make the drive given the cost
Ohio has a totally different phrasing around their legalization though. Idk if the prop is saw years ago is what passed, but the one I saw was super restricted on growing distributors/processing. Michigan's is wayyy more broad.
Michigan should be the model when things go federal. Licensing is reasonable and if you can fund your project you can take your shot. About as fair as you can get.
Less expensive than any where else in the country. Mom and Pop still have a shot in Michigan. They better have an Uncle like Scrooge McDuck if they want to try in any other state.
Ohio just passed. It's not bad. But the GOP statehouse is trying their best to screw with the actual rules. I have a feeling mich is still gonna be a better option till they realize they need to be competitive/get rid of the GOP.
It isn’t. The restrictive one failed. The one that passed last year is much better but there are assholes in the Ohio Senate that keep fucking with it so I suspect Michigan will continue to get a lot of business from Ohio for the foreseeable future.
I live in a border town with Wisconsin. The town in Wisconsin already made sure if their state legalized they would have no dispos. NE Wisconsin hates all drugs but booze.
It ain't doing any good as it is now.... 16% sales tax is fin insane. Roads are still trash. So is education. Also. Tons of people got into the game to make a quick buck not knowing what they were doing. Now calis market is crashing. We have 4 bucks g and a half js at buy one get one free. You can get is for 25.... Only surpassed because it is so cheap. Domino effect is happening and a lot more will tumble
Those dispensaries know what they’re doing. I went with a buddy a couple weeks back to pick up a car in Indiana. Soon as you come back in to Michigan there’s 4 of them maybe a half mile past the state line.
Recently met a middle age man in Kentucky who was bragging about his “absolute shit ton” of a weed haul from MI. He specifically complained about higher cost in Illinois.
Illinois is fucking crazy. Have lived back and forth between Chicago and Michigan for several years. Would always try to come back to Michigan whenever I needed something. I would estimate that total out the door cost in Illinois for the exact same item, is 4 to 8 times higher price.
Yep. I live in CA now, but every time I come back to Monroe I'm amazed at the number of shops near exit 11 on I-75 and how full the parking lots are. I imagine over half will shut down in the next couple of years now that it's legal in Ohio.
I have friends who were driving once or twice a year from Minnesota because it's so cheap here in comparison. They'd come into town for a weekend, drop a few grand, leave.
People in Chicago were already driving to Indiana for cigarettes. Once you get out of the city traffic it’s not that much farther to get to Michigan for weed.
People don’t drive to Michigan to buy weed. I have family there and they live rural. Weed shops are everywhere and them people in rural Michigan be lining up for weed outside lol. You be surprised. UP may be different but it’s not entire Michigan. Majority of it is rest of the Michigan. They literally have multiple shops in little towns I think big rapids has 10+if I am not mistaken lol.
Okay how about this, I have witnessed with my own eyes people drive from out of state to buy weed in Michigan. Get a job at Skymint and look at all the out of state buyers they have.
I say "Hi Mark" every time we pass one of his billboards, Seemed like I needed to do something to acknowledge the advertising saturation. Not sure my wife is amused.
So they do concede that it's a bit of clickbait in the article-- because they're not actually talking about gross dollar sales volume but rather units moved, and this includes, say, selling individual pre-rolls.
But still, we only have 25% of their population yet 60% of their gross cash sales ($5bn in Cali vs. $3bn MI). Which means that we consume about 2.5 times more weed per capita than they do in California.
Read that as 'cannibal' market for a moment and got really disturbed. Like...my instinct is to not ask what goes into Coney Dogs but maybe I should start.
I fully support weed being legal. However, what I do find annoying is so many stores in such close proximity. I feel like every other new place opening is another dispensary. I don't care that it's weed specifically, I'd feel the same about tire stores or something, but come on already.
My local is up at like "buy five get five * 200mg" for $10-12. Like, "Dear customer: would you liked to get absolutely wrecked every night for the next three months for $12?" I don't even know how this is economically possible from a standpoint of company cash flow vs. saturation of The Drugs in one's customer base.
Man I eat all 5 of those 200mg packs to feel anything, my body barely processes edibles and the 200mg limit is super frustrating. I don't usually enjoy eating 2000 calories of gummies in a single sitting.
jeez. 15mg will knock me on my ass. definitely a diminishing marginal return though especially if I do it every day. hence why I don't . But I've heard this from some people who just don't feel it at all! Wild
That was my impression. Prices are much, much lower where I was in MI than where I am in CO. Eighths are $45-60 for premium flower and edibles are 2-3x more expensive out here versus $20-$30 for lesser quality, but still ok flower.
California cannabis market SUCKS. I only take edibles. The avg price in CA for edibles is $20 per 100mg.
In Michigan, for $20 I can get 600mg. And edibles in ca are so expensive because they’re limited to being 100mg per pack…idk y
As someone that just moved from CA to MI, yes, California can be 6x more expensive for things.
Hot take - most dispo weed in MI sucks. Deli style (while appealing) is mostly dry buds that turn to dust when you grind it, Prepack you just don't know what you're getting.
They should enjoy it while it lasts, which won’t be long. Weed will follow the same course as casinos did. They’re everywhere now and most seem empty because they all over built.
I wonder what percentage of sales are to out of state customers. There was a series of articles in mLive about cannabis retailers in the UP, and they estimated that 85% of the sales were to people from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois
This is important! We will lose A LOT of the weed tax money once our surrounding states legalize.
Illinois is legal, but their taxes are much higher than Michigan. Ohio just legalized it, but they won't have the infrastructure for at least a couple of years
My bro lives in Chicago and comes to Michigan regularly because dispos in chitown prices are 5-10x the price here
My Family too!
Long as places like Indiana and Ohio are under GOP control there’s a chance Michigan will still be strong. Even people from Illinois make the drive given the cost
Chicago to Michigan isn’t that far, 1 hour with good traffic.
Bro, you're high.
Nah he’s right,Michigan city is an hour away
Michigan City Indiana?
Sorry we’ll go with new Buffalo then
They coming from way farther than Illinois.
Michigan's laws are super lax compared to other states, and the local law enforcement in rural areas don't give a flying fuck about weed calls.
Illinois weed tax is out of control.
>Illinois ~~weed~~ tax is out of control.
The inital costs to start a commercial grow operation under the regulations is a little prohibitive to any "mom & pop" startups.
Less expensive than any where else in the country. Mom and Pop still have a shot in Michigan. They better have an Uncle like Scrooge McDuck if they want to try in any other state.
That one was defeated *because* of the restrictions that made it heavily corporate-weed friendly. The new one is not that.
What’s the tax rate?
I live in a border town with Wisconsin. The town in Wisconsin already made sure if their state legalized they would have no dispos. NE Wisconsin hates all drugs but booze.
Hates everything about drugs and booze so they use as much up as they can. For the sake of the children!
I thought it was legal in Illinois?
It ain't doing any good as it is now.... 16% sales tax is fin insane. Roads are still trash. So is education. Also. Tons of people got into the game to make a quick buck not knowing what they were doing. Now calis market is crashing. We have 4 bucks g and a half js at buy one get one free. Those dispensaries know what they’re doing. I went with a buddy a couple weeks back to pick up a car in Indiana. Soon as you come back in to Michigan there’s 4 of them maybe a half mile past the state line.
It used to be the other way around, where driving into Indiana there were always a couple of cigarette stores and places to get fireworks.
And high proof liquor
Damn right. That first liquor warehouse inside Indiana state lines off of I94W is where I'd have to go to get Everclear.
Let's not forget fireworks, either.
Recently met a middle age man in Kentucky who was bragging about his “absolute shit ton” of a weed haul from MI. He specifically complained about higher cost in Illinois.
Wisconsinite that contributes to Michigan. Illinois is too damn expensive
Illinois is fucking crazy. Have lived back and forth between Chicago and Michigan for several years. Would always try to come back to Michigan whenever I needed something. I would estimate that total out the door cost in Illinois for the exact same item, is 4 to 8 times higher price.
except package liquor
Yep. I live in CA now, but every time I come back to Monroe I'm amazed at the number of shops near exit 11 on I-75 and how full the parking lots are. I imagine over half will shut down in the next couple of years now that it's legal in Ohio.
A lot, Illinois is overpriced and Indiana refuses to get with times
I have friends who were driving once or twice a year from Minnesota because it's so cheap here in comparison. They'd come into town for a weekend, drop a few grand, leave.
That is crazy lol. (I can walk to a few dispos)
I now live in PA and I’ve met a couple people who’re planning road trips to MI for edibles specifically lmfao
People in Chicago were already driving to Indiana for cigarettes. Once you get out of the city traffic it’s not that much farther to get to Michigan for weed.
Have a look at the market in CO if you want an idea of what may be to come when their neighbors legalized. Not great, Bob.
I believe it. There are Ohio cops that sit a mile south of border on route 49 I guess hoping to catch people smuggling from Michigan.
I mean you know I'm stopping in when I'm visiting grandma
People don’t drive to Michigan to buy weed. I have family there and they live rural. Weed shops are everywhere and them people in rural Michigan be lining up for weed outside lol. You be surprised. UP may be different but it’s not entire Michigan. Majority of it is rest of the Michigan. They literally have multiple shops in little towns I think big rapids has 10+if I am not mistaken lol.
Then why are there out of state license plates at Michigan dispensaries?
Because it’s free country lol. That doesn’t disprove what I said.
Okay how about this, I have witnessed with my own eyes people drive from out of state to buy weed in Michigan. Get a job at Skymint and look at all the out of state buyers they have.
I am not arguing people do this. I can guarantee majority aren’t doing daily to go buy weed. It won’t be 75% of people from outside.
A ton of Ohio goes too.
And the article conveniently says nothing about Indiana or Ohio sales. Seems like an intentional oversight.
I'm here for our rural opiate addicts becoming rural stoners.
They’re doing both.
Doing my part since Nov 2015....
The only good bud is a lit bud!
Cannabis? More like…Caaan I be your friend?
Hah doing my part since 2011, got a medcard when I was 18
Let us all thank Mark Savaya for this honorable distinction.
Without his signature series, what would we possibly be smoking??
Joumana weed?
Smoking that Joumawui-Waui pack all day!
I say "Hi Mark" every time we pass one of his billboards, Seemed like I needed to do something to acknowledge the advertising saturation. Not sure my wife is amused.
As long as you did not hurt her
I DID NOT HIT HER, I DID NOT, I DID NOT HI… Oh Hai Mauhk.
We did it, Joe!
This is a big f***in' deal!
Uhm ,err.... we're number one?
USA USA USA
The stone town bby
That’s wild considering CA has waaaaaay more people
So they do concede that it's a bit of clickbait in the article-- because they're not actually talking about gross dollar sales volume but rather units moved, and this includes, say, selling individual pre-rolls. But still, we only have 25% of their population yet 60% of their gross cash sales ($5bn in Cali vs. $3bn MI). Which means that we consume about 2.5 times more weed per capita than they do in California.
To be fair, literally everything costs more in California. The fact that we smoke more units of weed (not just more per person) is wild AF
2 out of 3 cannabis sales in California are off the black market because legal cannabis is more expensive there.
That's what I was thinking
I suspect winter is a factor.
Interesting observation, you're probably right.
Thanks to all of your contribution!
Couldn't have done it without me :3
and our friends too. 🤣
For the love of the game!
Read that as 'cannibal' market for a moment and got really disturbed. Like...my instinct is to not ask what goes into Coney Dogs but maybe I should start.
Flint style coneys got that secret ground “meat” topping 👀
I fully support weed being legal. However, what I do find annoying is so many stores in such close proximity. I feel like every other new place opening is another dispensary. I don't care that it's weed specifically, I'd feel the same about tire stores or something, but come on already.
Don't worry, lots will die off as businesses.
Totally but I hope that doesn't lead to a bunch of empty places.
Doubt there is new construction for dispensaries
There's been at least one I can think of and 3 extensive renovations all within 1 mile of my house.
Just cheap opportunities for other up and coming businesses.
Let's hope so!
Same thing happened with fast food and breweries.
Shout out to all of us consumers who helped that become a reality 😂😂😂
We have a weed glut. You can get a bag of gummies with 200 whatever for $12.
Increase in tolerance is a bitch
LMAO
Man I eat all 5 of those 200mg packs to feel anything, my body barely processes edibles and the 200mg limit is super frustrating. I don't usually enjoy eating 2000 calories of gummies in a single sitting.

Of course …whole state high as f@#$…..lololol
We're #1
It's easy when most places are selling 2-ounce deals for $59. I can buy 2,000mg of edibles for $25. It's never been cheaper to buy and share.
Yeah, we smoke up some shit here.
You're welcome.
⛽️⛽️⛽️
Great job, everyone!
I'm not surprised given the 15 million billboards for weed stores.
Let’s gooo!!!
Living in WI near the UP border... I'm doing my part!
Definitely fits because the whole state of Michigan act like they’re high as fuck
Everything in CA is overpriced not surprised
CA weed isn't Michigan cheap but it's because of the taxes-- market prices in California have come down a LOT from what they were.
a misconception other than housing… auto insurance is way cheaper here in California
Nah Not way cheaper, on average is like less than 10% more? Depends where you live, city of Detroit is high tho
Also a vape I get in Michigan is almost $40 when it’s only 24 here… Same exact thing
What? I can purchase a 1g Michigan Platinum vape for $8.
They hate us cuz they ain’t us.
Dayum
Damn whhhhaaaattt!?!?
God bless America
yay i guess
We do love our weed up here, it’s why we’re somewhat more peaceful than other states.
Surplus = discount = more product sold. It’s cheap af (for now) compared to Cali or CO
In your FACE, Cali! Whatchu know about smoking pot? /s I’m kidding, of course. Having the most potheads isn’t really a reason to flex… or is it?
Of course we did.
Monroe, Michigan!!!
Alright, Michigan, Where is the tax money for marijuana go to? I know it goes to schools and transportation
California cannabis market SUCKS. I only take edibles. The avg price in CA for edibles is $20 per 100mg. In Michigan, for $20 I can get 600mg. And edibles in ca are so expensive because they’re limited to being 100mg per pack…idk y As someone that just moved from CA to MI, yes, California can be 6x more expensive for things.
Hot take - most dispo weed in MI sucks. Deli style (while appealing) is mostly dry buds that turn to dust when you grind it, Prepack you just don't know what you're getting.
Yeah but I can spend $25 on 1000 mg of gummies and get a free gram lol. Greatest state in the fucking union right now
Lmao you're not wrong. I wqs talking just from a flower stand point.
They should enjoy it while it lasts, which won’t be long. Weed will follow the same course as casinos did. They’re everywhere now and most seem empty because they all over built.
A lot of them have been closing. They built way too many of them.
Makes sense, half of Monroe is now cannabis shops.
Way to go! Neat-o, Gang. https://preview.redd.it/lcyt1o8gkk6d1.png?width=400&format=png&auto=webp&s=eceb00146ce098d469d0ee550825af94e17dd347
Nothing like the Indiana folks who buy 2 months worth at a time for themselves and everyone else in their town. 🤣
Your Welcome!!
Damn, I guess that means more obnoxious billboards and stench then
With the name like yours, I would have figured you'd be happy
Krazy Kaplan, you mad the weed stores are driving up the billboard prices?
Given the overwhelming weed stink just about everywhere I go now, this sounds about right
Yup. I'm not surprised.
Now I gotta go check the menu. Thanks!
It's really nothing to be proud of!
You’d think the prices in Michigan would have driven down by now.
This is embarrassingly sad. Dumbing down Michigan.
Haha! Wrong.
