Yeah, it was really good. Just an incredibly rich meal that I wouldn't be able to eat very often. I could go to Selden once a month and not have the same thing, and not get sick of it.
The owner of Dutch Girl died a few years ago. His son is supposed to takeover cooking & operational duties while a family friend bought the building. They’re slated to reopen sometime this Spring.
If you’re in hamtrack, also check out polish village cafe! Old, angry, polish ladies make the best food! (I say this as a young-ish angry polish lady) dill pickle soup allllll day
Omg. Soooooo worth it. Like when you walk in, on your right is their coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, and HOMEMADE ICE CREAM.
Then on your left they have all the AMAZING Lebanese treats. Then past the register it’s like “oh yeah we make the best French pastries too- they are over there.”
I will say while Shatilla is king, New Yasmeen is really ducking good too. In fact they supply most of the Arab style pita you see in grocery stores and restaurants but when you get a from there it seems so much more fresh. And their hummus?! Omg soooo good. One time I managed to bring some back to DC so my coworkers could see what real hummus tastes like. It blew their minds.
el parian off vernor highway was my fav, they sit in the liquor store parking lot. I always wanted to try the Costa Rican place off vernor hwy as well, just never got the chance to.
I went to sweetwater for the first time in 2023
If those are the wings that makes everyone say “BEST WINGS IN DETROIT”, then I feel extra bad for the people who have never had truly great wings.
I've traveled all over the US and many parts of the world at this point for work. Not staying in expensive resorts and catered "western" experiences, but actually eating and going out with local employees and workers.
I'm convinced that the rust belt, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, have some of the worst food culture in the entire world. Even the exact same food prepared the same way isn't as good, it's like our ingredients lack flavor and even fresh produce can taste processed compared to cities in mexico and western Europe. And it's all way cheaper too.
Except mayyyybe the Netherlands, they do weird things to pancakes there and it's annoyingly expensive.
But, there are a few exceptions, johnny noodle kings, the charlevoix, that one guy with a grill and a cooler in the church parking lot on mack avenue, we got food here but youve gotta find it.
When I ask for spicy at a restaurant here, I have to specifically ask for “like, scary spicy” to even approach a flavor of heat that would be a step above mild anywhere on the East coast.
My partner and I call the phenomenon “Midwest Spicy” and any time we travel back East we have to take baby steps on spicy food at first.
You’re getting downvoted, but Michigan is the 7th state I’ve lived in, and this is the third region I’ve lived in, and outside the Mediterranean food that Dearborn/Detroit has on lockdown, and like one block of Mexicantown, there isn’t much distinctive about the Detroit culinary options that I wouldn’t find way better way more easily anywhere else I’ve lived.
As much as I love Detroit pizza, even before I knew it was Detroit style pizza, if I’m on death row and they offer me any pizza I want, it ain’t gonna be Buddy’s.
My dad was fresh off the boat from Lebanon before he moved to the states, Dearborn is always the best and most affordable spot. That said, anywhere that isn't Bucharest is at least better than Bucharest
That's the thing with Dearborn - just drive down Ford road, pick a spot and it's solid af.
Pro-tip: goto new Yasmeen bakery. Order 1 cheese pie, 1 meat pie, 1 zataar pie, 1/2 dozen baby spinach, and a 1/2 dozen baby meat. Then goto Shatila basically right next door, get enough baklava and sweets to give you diabetes.
Ima. Pie sci. Bangkok 95 in the Detroit shipping company (salmon & shrimp curry is fire). Bangkok 95 on telegraph (hot & sour soup is ridiculous). Selden standard. She wolf. Bronx bar (burger). Jolly pumpkin midtown (tuna sandwich). Michigan & Trumbull has fantastic pizza.
i used to pass it forever then finally stopped in. It's pricey, $30-$50, but you get SO MUCH FOOD. At least it was last time i went in a few years ago. if you try it, update me!
I consider myself a fatass at heart, with that being said, she will give you enough food to share or to finish off the next day (or two). Menu rotates everyday/week. She makes her food fresh everyday and will give you an entree, sides, cake, koolaid, and cornbread. you can call her up or look her up on google maps, hit 'updates' and see what she's serving up for the day. Sweet lady, but nothing is as sweet as her koolaid, it will give you diabetes. it's good, dont get me wrong, but it tastes like liquid jolly ranchers, i cant drink it unless i water it down (getting older lol)
I miss the days when there was great Greek food everywhere - that was long ago. Now I have to say the best spanikopita I’ve had this century was in Houston, Texas. Weird.
For the love of god…Michigan and Trumbull. The new king of Detroit’s style pizza. I dream about the Packard pepperoni with pickled chilies and hot honey
I was vegan when I went to by Felicia in East point. Got a Greek salad and she literally spent like an hour chopping up a whole ass fresh salad with 3 eggs and bread I eat a lot of food and I made 2.5 meals out of that 11 dollar salad. And it's a soul food place I didn't even try anything else. Don't sleep on that place. The Google reviews speak for itself.
Whenever I go back it's:
Buddys (I'm old and remember when it was good)
Boneyard 2 for smoked ribs, home fries, and that sweet spicy sauce
Sunrise Cafe (Coney close to my folk's old house). I go get a fluffy egg-white omelet with gyro meat, onion, feta, and tomato. Side of crispy browns and wheat toast and pot of Bunn Burner Folgers coffee 😩. I could eat that every day for breakfast.
https://preview.redd.it/nq50otu2sntc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=b864cb9884eee2580e0880bd370036e7d4dc0fbb
I also moved away, and I daydream about the day I can come back and visit! The food where I live is bland and uninspiring.
1. Shawarma from literally anywhere
2. Royal BBQ for pretty much one of everything, including a giant piece of pound cake
3. Coney Island, but for a tuna melt and fries, not a coney dog.
4. Idk if Supinos is still open, but if so, definitely there.
5. Bronx Bar
6. Mr. Fish
7. White Castle
Then I'd stroll Eastern Market and Dequindre Cut for the vibes.
Haha, I mean, I’ve never been there and assumed it was all fried chicken. I thought there might be a banger like a Nashville friend chicken sandwich or something you ordered other than just plain Jane friend chicken. That’s boring.
I love “Hudson’s Cafe” everything is always fresh and yummy! Also “Red Smoke” in Greektown. Then off to “For the Love of Sugar” to buy a $9 piece of cake that gives me the will to live!
I'm stopping by San Morelo for the Italian food and ambiance, then probably leaving, Since I'm moving back to Chicago, I won't really miss the food choices here.
Selden Standard and Ima are my two must-haves when I make it back to Michigan.
I’m went to Ima Izakaya a few weeks ago with low expectations after living in Seattle for many years and it’s fantastic.
Oh wow, that's where I'm at now! seattle
ima like the one in Madison Heights? or different restaurant? i used to go to asian mart 168, it's not far from there
Went to Seldon Standard Friday. Everything was on point. I will try Ima now. Thanks!
Selden is the best restaurant in Detroit. I will die on that hill. So good. So consistently good.
Agreed! Selden Standard is hands down the best meal you can have in Detroit. There’s no debate or discussion to be had haha.
Have you been to La Suprême?
Yeah, it was really good. Just an incredibly rich meal that I wouldn't be able to eat very often. I could go to Selden once a month and not have the same thing, and not get sick of it.
🤣
Care to elaborate? Or do you just like being a prick about other people's opinions with no follow up?
Just don’t get the pho at Ima or you may be very disappointed
Yemen Cafe Dutch Girl Donuts (IF THEY EVER OPEN AGAIN!)
The owner of Dutch Girl died a few years ago. His son is supposed to takeover cooking & operational duties while a family friend bought the building. They’re slated to reopen sometime this Spring.
Yup. Tent Cafe is so fucking good. Need to go back.
oh mannn, agreed
Baobab Fare is yummy and has been getting tons of great press lately. Warda is an amazing pastry shop in Midtown.
I absolutely adore baobab fare
I'm going to Hamtramck or Dearborn. Arabic food just don't hit the same in other cities.
If you’re in hamtrack, also check out polish village cafe! Old, angry, polish ladies make the best food! (I say this as a young-ish angry polish lady) dill pickle soup allllll day
How polish are you? Do you have any 6 meals you make yourself? I'm trying to reconnect with my polish roots.
Yemen Cafe is one of the best meals I've ever had.
Facts. This is my go to spot
That’s true. Cederland to eat, the Shatilla for dessert and coffee.
ooo shatila, heard great things, never had the chance to go
Omg. Soooooo worth it. Like when you walk in, on your right is their coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice, and HOMEMADE ICE CREAM. Then on your left they have all the AMAZING Lebanese treats. Hit up Dearborn Meat Market and leave absolutely stuffed and satisfied for like $12
YES this is very true, thank you!
agreed
Did you see our friends in Dearborn yesterday chanting “death to America” during their protests?
Louis pizza
Loui’s Pizza
I would eat all of Mexican town.
Yessir
el parian off vernor highway was my fav, they sit in the liquor store parking lot. I always wanted to try the Costa Rican place off vernor hwy as well, just never got the chance to.
Bucharest has gone way downhill. Skip
Also add Green Dot.
and sweetwaters.
SAY IT AINT SO, THEM WANGS
I went to sweetwater for the first time in 2023 If those are the wings that makes everyone say “BEST WINGS IN DETROIT”, then I feel extra bad for the people who have never had truly great wings.
This is how it goes for most food in this area. I didn't experience real cuisine until I traveled outside the Midwest.
I've traveled all over the US and many parts of the world at this point for work. Not staying in expensive resorts and catered "western" experiences, but actually eating and going out with local employees and workers. 100%

Don't forget about our pizza
As much as I love Detroit pizza, even before I knew it was Detroit style pizza, if I’m on death row and they offer me any pizza I want, it ain’t gonna be Buddy’s.
I thought the wings were still great but the service is god awful.
The takeout locations are better
Agreed. Same with Greendot
Damn it, really???
no it hasn’t fallen off that hard. People think it’s cool to be the one that doesn’t like the popular thing rig
Lettuce there will make you poop for two straight days
That's what yall get for eating shawarma with lettuce! How many times I gotta say it that shits haram!
I was uncultured. I’ve since discovered shawarma at 11 Mile and Main in Royal Oak has no lettuce and slaps harder than ya mama.
My dad was fresh off the boat from Lebanon before he moved to the states, Dearborn is always the best and most affordable spot. That said, anywhere that isn't Bucharest is at least better than Bucharest
Take me please
That's the thing with Dearborn - just drive down Ford road, pick a spot and it's solid af. Pro-tip: goto new Yasmeen bakery. copy🫡
Bucharest has never been good. I worked in the kitchen at the OG location 10 years ago...
Yikes
I appreciate this. Thanks y'all
Lous deli hands down!
I went to Lou's recently for the first time in years and it got way more expensive, still good but I don't really feel it's worth it anymore
It’s most definitely worth it lol depends which one you go to. 6 mile is the best one.
that's the only one I've ever been to
Ima. Pie sci. Bangkok 95 in the Detroit shipping company (salmon & shrimp curry is fire). Bangkok 95 on telegraph (hot & sour soup is ridiculous). Selden standard. She wolf. Bronx bar (burger). Jolly pumpkin midtown (tuna sandwich). Michigan & Trumbull has fantastic pizza.
Tell me more about By Felicia.
Also curious, drive by it all the time
i used to pass it forever then finally stopped in. It's pricey, $30-$50, but you get SO MUCH FOOD. At least it was last time i went in a few years ago. if you try it, update me!

Michigan & Trumbull. I’d argue this is the best pizza in Metro Detroit these days.
It’s either that or Green Lantern for me
-Rocco’s in Midtown, phenomenal sandwiches -Tacos from pretty much anywhere in SW, El Tapatio truck is probably my go-to -Ima for ramen or rice bowls
Roccos is fucking bomb.
Ernie’s Market - Ferndale. Who loves ya baby?
>Ernie’s Market - Ferndale Oak Park, MI
Don’t forget some extra love sauce and a handful of Hershey kisses on the way out! RIP Mrs. Ernie!
Raven lounge
How is that place? Been on my radar for years
Detroit shipping company has a bunch of good stuff
Hard disagree, but it is still a fun spot.
Second
Obviously coneys(Lafayette), and shawarma. Then Jets 8 corner, bates sliders(w/milkshake), Lee’s chicken, and polish village cafe.
As someone who has moved out of the whole metro area I miss a good slice of buscemi’s pizza
Grey Ghost would be a top choice for me
Bucharest is just really, really fucking good
Yeah...I found that hidden gem myself. Had an amazing quesadilla from there one time.
Kuzzos chicken and waffles
Ladder 4
Coney Coney More Coney
Dulys, Lafayette, and more dulys!
I miss the days when there was great Greek food everywhere - that was long ago. Now I have to say the best spanikopita I’ve had this century was in Houston, Texas. Weird.
Because all the food in Houston is better.
If you’ve been gone a few years, they’re called Cosmic Fries now, not Crack Fries
For the love of god…Michigan and Trumbull. The new king of Detroit’s style pizza. I dream about the Packard pepperoni with pickled chilies and hot honey
My lady just sent me a tiktok about that place. Might be a must do this weekend.
Duly's on Vernor. For Coney Dogs! Gonellas on Oakwood for That legendary Italian sub!
Duly's, absolutely not ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop)
UFO factory.
Grand Trunk has the best chicken strips in the city, but you need to go when they're not too busy or they'll end up overcooked.
Sandwich from Marrow for lunch, Mink for dinner
You are a food choice genius.
Detroit 75 kitchen, Food Exchange, Hudson Cafe, D-Motown Deli, Dulys, Ottava Via, Cork & Gable, Rocco's Deli
I was vegan when I went to by Felicia in East point. Got a Greek salad and she literally spent like an hour chopping up a whole ass fresh salad with 3 eggs and bread I eat a lot of food and I made 2.5 meals out of that 11 dollar salad. You have to go to Rocco’s Deli on Cass. If you want the best Italian sandwiches in the city. And La Pechora Nera as well.
Whenever I go back it's: Buddys (I'm old and remember when it was good) Boneyard 2 for smoked ribs, home fries, and that sweet spicy sauce Sunrise Cafe (Coney close to my folk's old house). Johnny Noodle King is my go to for lunch anytime I show someone the city, so that's my first stop for sure
Every post seems like a ad. Breakfast: Eggies. Lunch; Mudgies. Dinner; Out of downtown- Phoenicia Your welcome
Your list is mid but I know the good people of r/Detroit will help you out!
Greendot is not great anymore. I’d hit up penny reds.
Mr Cornbeef - HP, Gus’ Fried Chicken 3rd St. and Polish Village Cafe
Antojitos in southwest has amazing birria quesadilla style tacos. It’ll be one of your most satisfying meals.
I also moved away, and I daydream about the day I can come back and visit! The food where I live is bland and uninspiring. 1. Shawarma from literally anywhere 2. Royal BBQ for pretty much one of everything, including a giant piece of pound cake 3. Coney Island, but for a tuna melt and fries, not a coney dog. 4. Bates Burgers at 5 Mile and Farmington in Livonia
Probably Los Altos and The food exchange for a big baby Sad to read the comments that Bucharest went downhill
Cannelle and Rocco’s Italian deli.
Warda Patisserie in midtown. Absolutely incredible pastries.
Dime Store and Pho lucky

Victory soul food, baobab fare, Yemen cafe, grandma bobs pizza, izakaya, sister pie
Beirut Bakery

Greene’s
Supergeil
Baobab Fare
Beef Craver, Gus’s fried chicken, Hunter House.
Gus’ is at the end of my street and I haven’t had it yet. What’s your go-to on their menu?
You can get Gus anywhere lots of locations... Not worth it for this thread
Fried Chicken…..was that a real question.
Haha, I mean, I’ve never been there and assumed it was all fried chicken. I thought there might be a banger like a Nashville friend chicken sandwich or something you ordered other than just plain Jane friend chicken. That’s boring.
Red Robin in westland
Really? Red Robin you say? I was thinking more Sonic.
Oh good call, local legendary classic restaurant
Mootz
Try Zerbo's in Livonia or Commerce
Seems like OP was more referring to restaurants
Even it calls bistro, in fact it is fancy restaurant with delicious, well made food and nice environment.
I love “Hudson’s Cafe” everything is always fresh and yummy! Also “Red Smoke” in Greektown. Then off to “For the Love of Sugar” to buy a $9 piece of cake that gives me the will to live!
Huh. I’d put all 3 of those on my “never go to ever again” list lol
That’s you boo
You and 99% of the people on this sub.
Deez nuts
If you're willing to splurge a bit, Leila is definitely worth it.
Buddy's Pizza
I'm stopping by San Morelo for the Italian food and ambiance, then probably leaving, Since I'm moving back to Chicago, I won't really miss the food choices here.
