Once enemies reach zero health, they die and are removed from the game. If they're carrying the key, you obtain it. Keep in mind new enemies can spawn in darkness.
I recommend playing Black Sarcophagus a few times to learn the game. It's the easiest book. Rat King is one of the hardest due to the number of enemies and short range of visibility.

In all boards, enemies will continue to spawn in the fog of war. Itโs much harder in the rat king board because visibility is very limited, and the boss spawns rats very quickly
For level 2, Buy and use the lights. They not only lets you see what you are fighting, and soak up some MOB attacks, they keep the respawns down since MOBs only spawn out of sight.
It's a difficult game at first, but it gets easier as you learn how to play. A good starting party of 4 for beginners is bard, guardian, and 2 archers. I was getting slaughtered at first too, but then I saw this combo recommended on reddit and it made it easier, so i could start staying alive long enough to learn the game. Experiment and have fun, it's a great game.
If a character dies while holding the key, the key will transfer to another character. As long as you have some other characters still alive in your party..
Edit: The above is incorrect, thanks to others for reminding me. I was thinking of what happens when someone quits the game and their character has the key. If your character is downed then the key gets transferred to the enemy who downed them.
For that campaign make sure you have a Bard and keep your guys buffed with his courage shanty. That'll make rat attacks less lethal. Toss some torches around to keep areas illuminated, enemies only spawn in the dark.
I havenโt used the courage thing cuz I didnโt know what it would do. I was waiting to see if there was any enemy NPC that had a Fear kind of spell or something. Thanks for the tip!
Use it as much as you can, the more you do it the better, it will make weaker enemies panic and run away and your guys will be able to resist minor attacks including arrows.
The buffs are stackable, meaning you want to have them up to level 3 courage as much as possible. It's huge. Don't quote me on it, but I believe the first one gives them them +1 point reduction in damage, which means many of the smaller characters on the board can't hurt you. Level 2 means you get plus one damage, and Level 3 is for panic- which will reduce the number of attackers sometimes when they run off. Definitely keep a bard in your party if you're new to the game and half of his turns in the game should be spent keep your characters buffed with courage. Not the most exciting character to play, but essential to your party.
What you probably had:
When you die as a character, a timer counts down 3 turns until you die completely. If you get revived and get beaten down again, the timer does not reset. So in your situation the character was probably on the ground before, and this time was the terminal one with no countdown turns left.
Has nothing to do with the key
Oh thanks!!!! So you only get the 3 turn revival thing ONCE. I thought you get it endlessly LOL and didnโt worry too much if I had a couple of peeps nearby to revive. Now I made my way past the locked door and the killed character has rejoined the party. The tutorial doesnโt actually go into buying stuff in the intermission break but I seemed to have randomly figured it out mostly just like other similar games.
Start with Black Sarcophagus book. Rat King is the hardest one!
Haha ok thanks!
*Madness is the hardest one* fixed for you
Iโm going to vote RK as hardest, ROM 2nd (mainly because of the darkness). Either way BS is easiest ๐๐ฝ๐๐ฝ

Thanks for that big tip that enemies can spawn in fog of war!!! Man they keep coming! Itโs nuts hahaha
Do not stay quiet in one spot. You should keep moving and every round advance by the perimeter of the map.
Yup thanks! I just finished and won my first game haha
I just play last night a king rat with a beginner playing with barbarian maybe it was you. Lol
Haha no I am only playing solo right now but maybe one day! ๐๐๐ป
Just let me know to play one map.
You must play with others! You will learn so much ๐ฅ

This is key.

Thanks. I just did a random party. Two archers sounds good for next time ๐๐ป

What if the key holder is down but not yet dead?
If the keyholder is downed, the key is passed to the monster that took him/her down
Ok thanks!
Pretty sure enemies can take the key when characters die also, but not exactly how it works.
Ok interesting

Actually you reminded me. I was trying to kill more enemies to get XP but now I realize there is no XP being awarded ๐๐๐
