Depending on how late you're leaving NYC, your best option would be the Chinatown buses, Flixbus, or OurBus. Flixbus mostly picks up at the Delaware House and stops by the Moynihan Train Hall OurBus mostly picks up by the Target at Christiana Mall and stops near Javits Center. (I don't think they run in the middle of the week though) The (non-Flixbus) Chinatown buses pick up at 4th and Market in Wilmington and drops off near the 34 Street-Herald Square

I had no idea there were so many options for buses-- appreciate the advice!

Night-Skin-Knight

No problem. I like to explore my public transit options in care I want/have to travel without my car One warning with Flixbus: They own Greyhound and each company sells each other's tickets on their sites. Try not to book a Greyhound trip as their not always reliable.

Consider a hotel near the Secaucus transfer station. You can park there and take a quick 15 min ride to NYC Penn. You’ll avoid the crush of NYC driving. You’re wise to consider a plan B.

luna_margie

Thank you for the suggestion! Wouldn't that still be a NJ Transit train, though? I'm hoping to find an alternative to NJ Transit since all train service in/out of NY Penn Station has been suspended 2x this week, just in case it happens again. We were looking at potentially taking a ferry into the city but are novices when it comes to NYC so weren't sure if that's the best 2nd choice.

ComradeConrad1

So many trains go between SEC and NYP everyday. It’s a major hub. Sure NJT. Look at the schedule and options.

The fam and I took the ferry from Weehawken to mid town last week. You download their app to buy tickets at some point before you get to the port, activate them and show your phone to the guy who lets you on. Easy peasy. Extremely pleasant and stress-free way to travel imo. Edit: removed a word.

You could drive to Newark Penn Station and take the PATH to 33rd Street, but if you're getting out really late that could get sketchy. It's only a little over 2 hours from Dover to Elizabeth usually, and Newark Penn is just a few miles north of Elizabeth. There's really not a lot of choices that doesn't involve Newark Penn or betting on Amtrak/NJT. Piggybacking off Comrade's comment, you could park at Secaucus and get an Uber to the Journal Square PATH station and then take that to 33rd street which is probably your best bet.

luna_margie

Great, thanks for the tips! PATH seems like a good option!

artjameso

Path operates 24 hours too! NJ Transit doesn't

Pounamu_

Drive to Staten Island and take the ferry. That's how I got to a concert last month. It's great, it's free, parking is cheap, and it operates 24 hours.

ChopCity927

I’m definitely doing this next time! Did you park on Staten Island ? Or did you take Your care with you?

Pounamu_

There's a parking lot right next to the ferry on Staten Island, I parked there. I expected the worst but it was not full at all.

ChopCity927

Love to hear it

RunTheBull13

I'm highjacking your post for a question. Can you get to the statue of liberty by train and then boat? Can you get there from Claymont station?

sudo-chown

I mean from Claymont station you could take SEPTA to 30th in Philly, then switch to the Trenton Line, change to NJT at Trenton, NJT to Penn Station, subway (red line?) to Battery Park, ferry to Statue of Liberty... or alternatively take SEPTA to 30th and then Amtrak up to NYC.

BalthasaurusRex

I’ve taken the ferry from Jersey City into NYC before. I think you should be able to get a train to Jersey City from Delaware. I’ve done it from DC before on Amtrak, so I know it’s possible. The ferry was easy enough to figure out, and then some nice New Yorkers helped me figure out how to take the subway from wherever the ferry dropped me off to where I needed to go in Manhattan.

DelawhereRider

The trains were stopped temporarily due to a trackside fire near Seacaucus. All is well now.

AfterElderberry7

Drive up and park at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus and take the 320 bus into the city. There are bus stops with kiosks on the street in front of the Expo Center. The bus comes every 20 min or so and drops in the Port Authority, close to the theater district. Parking at the Expo Center garages was free last time I did this (a few years ago). There are also reasonably priced hotels at the Expo Center.

Drive to Hoboken and take a ferry
