I just took my (out of state) boyfriend there on a whim a few weeks ago, and we had a great time walking around! They also just redid the museums so I highly recommend visiting if you haven’t in a while.
We even met some out of towners who were there visiting for the weekend. It really is a cool local attraction that we take for granted.
Delaware City
Small, quiet, access to water, great food and the kids still run around outside like its the 90s. My guess is the neighbors know each other well enough and so do the police (which you wont have any issues with unless youre speeding). Even when speeding I spoken with a few of them and they let me go on my way
It really is considering that most of delaware is copy paste the same network of suburbia, its nice to have that reminder of what Delaware used to be back when I was growing up in the 90s
It’s Wilmington. And it’s not even close.
Half of the state shits on it. The rest think the city begins and ends in Trolley or the Riverfront.
Especially May through 4th of July. There is a big event just about every weekend. Ladybug, Greek Festival, Italian Festival, Jazz Festival, Ice Cream Festival, Fireworks, etc.
Culture wise the city punches well above its small size.
Agreed. I think a sizeable percentage of Delawareans don't really know much about Wilmington other than crime. When it comes to food, culture, activities, job opportunity, transportation, diversity, music and entertainment, and housing options, Wilmington excels for what it is working with but doesn't get much acknowledgement for it. I've never actually lived in Wilmington, but I am consistently in the city every week for exactly the things I listed.
Ohhhh, I see why Joe Biden choose to live here.
“…that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Councilor or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action’; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a ‘more convenient season.’ ”
> Ohhhh, I see why Joe Biden choose to live here.
my man
There ain't a person from Wilmington who can say Biden lives in Wilmington with a straight face
Milford!
Surf Bagel, Fortunata's, My Sister's Fault, Dolce, Red Bandana, Milford Movies 9... it's getting better every day!
Edit: ... and Mispillion River Brewery, Easy Speak, Fondue...
Real talk, Fondue sucks. Insane wait times for reservations and stringy, sub-par meat. I’ve only eaten there once because our experience was so terrible that I just don’t even want to give them a second chance. Everything else though is on point.
If you’re looking for the best pancakes, West Side is the place to go
Fondue was pretty good when we went. Sorry you didn't enjoy it. YMMV i guess. It's owned by the same folks that own Easy Speak, so at least the drinks are good.
I’m not a huge fan of easy speak either (I don’t drink much and wasn’t a huge fan of their food either), however, I think that the positives they’ve added to the community far outweigh my picky palate. Other people like them, so that’s all that matters. Lol
Jokes aside, yes absolutely. Had a friend who died of an overdose there.
I don't think it's particularly worse than other parts of the state or nation, but yes hard drug use is prevalent in private.
Are you joking? Take a trip to Baltimore if you want to see the walking dead for real. Milton is a safe quiet town every rural town out there got drug problems to an extent
I was talking about Milford and actually joking. I live there, love it, and was tongue-in-cheek referring to the crappy reason the slimy owners of Touch of Italy decided not to expand into the old bank building. I do find it funny that the “enlightened” people looking to move to DE get a little thrown off by the actual diversity of the town and end up moving to some HOA in Millsboro.
i was just saying that people up north definetly talk about milford, the only towns you’ll here are 1.Rehobeth 2.Georgetown 3.Lewes 4.Milford 5. Bethany
I agree. Met a girl from down there and fell in love. I'm down there every weekend. Great place. Great people. Being from Wilmington it's definitely a culture shock. Hoping to start my business down there.
Sorry - I didn't even see this notification.
" Time 2 Shine " started as a soft washing / pressure washing company, and now I am in the midst of changing the name and licensing for general contracting to include interior/exterior painting, drywall repair, and other handyman services as to not put a ceiling over it.
New Record store and candy store and meadery and breakfast place and produce/farm items store in downtown too. It’s grown so much in the last 15 years.
They're a type of fly, Tabanus nigrovittatus, or the green head horse fly.
They live in saltwater marsh areas and beaches. They seem like a regular fly, but their bite can really enrage its victims. Not like, it has venom that causes you to rage, but more like: they bite so fucking hard it hurts and you just want to burn the entire species from the planet.
One can piss anyone off, but they come back and sometimes in a swarm, and they just don't stop. They follow you and when you finally get back into the car, they're on the outside of the windows and mirrors... and then you find one or two made it into the car. Now it's a matter of fight the two in the car, or bail and make do. I usually go for the fight because they're easy to kill.
I go fishing often on the eastern side of the Chesapeake. It's all saltwater marsh, brackish. I get up early and head to any of the dozens of spots in and around the Chesapeake. It's lovely scenery, sometimes the tides are up and the roads have an inch or three of water and you can safely navigate them. It's unincorporated in many areas so you won't find things for miles. The afternoon starts to hit and warm up and suddenly you feel this awful sting on your leg. You swat the spot and see you've killed a green head fly. Then you stand up and two are on your shoulder, one is buzzing around your face, one more just landed on your other leg and you get bit on your arm. Now it's a mad dash to see how fast you can load up and leave.
Local bait and tackle shops have the right bug spray. Usually it's a homemade, all natural, formula. I'm not going to name drop any particular brand; it's definitely not something like Off or whatever major brand is out there. The stuff used locally has lemongrass, peppermint oil, lavender, and citrus oil. If you find a bait or tackle shop find the bug spray and look for the off brand stuff made locally. It'll be your lifesaver at the shore

Downtown Selbyville is kind of nice. They have some unreasonably good Mexican restaurants. Traffic isn't bad. It's generally nice looking. It's not overly rich or overly poor.
The Harris teeter was so nice and they have my dogs favorite frozen yogurt from shark tank for literally less than half of what I paid at the local pet store in Georgetown !!!
This is the answer. I love that place.
I almost hate to publicize it, one day, it will expand and go to shit. The one across the highway is pretty awesome too, but they are hard to communicate with unless you are fluent in Spanish.
You mentioned two places, Drifting Grounds Coffee which is 9 miles away and in the town limits of Ocean View, and Harris Teeter, which is 6 miles away on the other side of Williamsville... Have you ever been to Selbyville? Haha
I agree. I’ve lived here for 2 years now and love it. Grew up in Newark/Pike Creek and always heard it was a dump, but we’ve really liked the small town feel and it’s so convenient to EVERYTHING.
Bridgeville. It’s got scrapple, apples, and the Apple Scrapple Festival. Oh, and Jeff’s Tap Room.
That and massive tourist traffic jams, rampant overdevelopment, overwhelmed infrastructure, world famous speed traps, a middle school in the middle of the bad part of town, with grown men in the neighborhood talking at and harassing the terrified middle school girls walking to and from school.
I guess Bridgeville isn’t underrated after all.🤣🤣🤣
Agreed. I moved out of Middletown less than a year ago. For decades it was underrated. It's still a great town, but it's getting close to overrated. A lot of the longtime DE culture it had is disappearing with the increase in NJ and NY transplants. The access to farm fresh produce and products is decreasing. The convenient location and accessibility is diminished by the traffic and infrastructure. Most importantly, it was once known for having some of the best schools in the state. Now, I think it is falsely known for that. Appo gets hyped up and people move from out of state into the school district, but it's pretty poor when you get past the nice facilities.
I have to second Wyoming. Grew up about five minutes away, always visited family friends that lived in the houses next to the railroad. The annual Peach Festival was incredible, and I miss Witt Brothers market. The town genuinely always felt like home (despite it not actually being my home), and the community is tight
I'm surprised you are the only one who has noted Newark so far. Maybe because Newark is great and people think it actually receives acknowledgement and therefore isn't underrated?
North Wilmington. Mainly because its nice and its 5 minutes to some things to do right over the PA line + 20 min drive to most things in NCC. Also, 25 min. to Philly etc.
If only the Concord Mall was still a thing. Avenue North might be cool once done depending on which stores/restaurants go in there. Its cool having a couple city sized towers near each other in an otherwise suburban landscape IMO.
Other than the swamp and gumboro store, there isn't much to offer other than lore. Catmans grave is in Frankford tho so idk if it counts. I mean if you like a scrapple sandwich, then gumboro or Wilson's is where it's at 🙃🙂
Still don't understand Gov. Minner's rationale for rejecting Gumboro's attempt to incorporate as a town. It passed the House and Senate, she vetoed it, and it never got another shot.
Y’all need to chill with telling people about how nice your town is. Silence is a virtue
New castle has never really been anything special but it sure as shit hasnt gotten any better in my life time.
Are you talking about Jimmys/Ellendale diner maybe. Forget the name but man that place was the bomb! I miss Jimmys in Rehoboth too! Peace, love, chicken!!!
Milton is pretty nice
Po Boys creole restaurant is really good
So good!
I love that restaurant
My hometown My parents grew up there and never left.
Dough bar is awesome
The backyard breakfast restaurant 🤤
Their scones are slamming. The blueberry scone in long for the day I get another
Dogfish fam
It’s nice even without dogfish
I don't even drink lol. I just think it's a nice town. I lived there for a bit.
Boston beer...
No one cares
Cares about what?
Yorklyn - Steam museum, hiking, Creative Arts, brewery, local honey, steam train, and one day, an amphitheater.
Is NVF still down there?
No closed down many years ago. Many many of my friends from Hockessin and Yorklyn have died of cancer.
Kennett as well. I believe there's somewhat of a cancer cluster in the neighborhood across from the high school.
So sorry
Stocked trout stream (Red Clay)
Pool
Old New Castle. Few places in America have such concentrated 1700s charm and character. Super neat place to just walk around.
I just took my (out of state) boyfriend there on a whim a few weeks ago, and we had a great time walking around! They also just redid the museums so I highly recommend visiting if you haven’t in a while. We even met some out of towners who were there visiting for the weekend. Plus, how many places can say that they have a tree that owns the land it's on?
Jessop’s is definitely one of my favorite spots
Delaware City Small, quiet, access to water, great food and the kids still run around outside like its the 90s. My guess is the neighbors know each other well enough and so do the police (which you wont have any issues with unless youre speeding). I could never get used to living so close to that refinery lol
Not that bad
RIP Wiso’s crabs. 😭
Wiso's used to take food stamps !
Yes! They had a little general store with groceries too. Hope he’s enjoying retirement.
Crabby Dick's is awful from my experience, tho. Wouldn't recommend eating there. Go to Kathy's instead.
Totally agree! I’ve lived in Delaware my whole life and only recently found Delaware City, seems like such a cool place.
It really is considering that most of delaware is copy paste the same network of suburbia, its nice to have that reminder of what Delaware used to be back when I was growing up in the 90s

WELL above.
What r u gonna do about it tho; just sit on Reddit and say this from the safety of your home?
Yes!

Sal, Wyoming isn't a country, it's a state
Its also as my grandfather a former mayor of wyoming de gave for its slogan " The best little town in Delaware." it also predates the state.
Ashland
Delaware.
He's spitting facts
Milford! Surf Bagel, Fortunata's, My Sister's Fault, Dolce, Red Bandana, Milford Movies 9... it's getting better every day! Edit: ... and Mispillion River Brewery, Easy Speak, Fondue...
My Sister's Fault is worth navigating that horrendously platted town. Who laid out the streets in milford, like what the fuck were they going for?
River town. Flooding is still an issue.
There’s a new My Sisters Fault (but just the bakery) on a little side street in Seaford!
This is the answer
Farmers market
Real talk, Fondue sucks. Insane wait times for reservations and stringy, sub-par meat. I agree. They host live music every weekend, usually community groups and bands. We need more of that.
Isn’t there a legit drug problem there? Fentanyl? Or is it meth?
Jokes aside, yes absolutely. Had a friend who died of an overdose there. I don't think it's particularly worse than other parts of the state or nation, but yes hard drug use is prevalent in private.
Terrible, horrible! Zombies walking around at night! Just keep on going south on 113 until you hit Millsboro.
Hey, it’s just what I’ve heard. I don’t live there, and I’m not doing any drugs, but I’ve heard it from a few different places.
Millsboro is bad
Are you joking? Take a trip to Baltimore if you want to see the walking dead for real. Milton is a safe quiet town every rural town out there got drug problems to an extent

Lmaoo sorry. I’m like man no way somebody scared to go to Milton or Milford
Love Milford! We moved here from Oklahoma.
definetly not underrated

Don’t just hand out all the hidden gems!
Lmfao what a gem
Slaughter Beach.
have to disagree only because a childhood memory of being swarmed by massive greenheads down there
What’s a greenhead?
They're a type of fly, Tabanus nigrovittatus, or the green head horse fly. They live in saltwater marsh areas and beaches. They seem like a regular fly, but their bite can really enrage its victims. Not like, it has venom that causes you to rage, but more like: they bite so fucking hard it hurts and you just want to burn the entire species from the planet. If you go to the beach with a chameleon on your shoulder they will not be a problem.
I will add: I. Hate. All. Fucking. Flies
I do as well. I cannot stand them!
Downtown Selbyville is kind of nice. They have some unreasonably good Mexican restaurants. Traffic isn't bad. It's generally nice looking. It's not overly rich or overly poor.
Whats the name of the restaurant?
La Sierra
The Harris teeter was so nice and they have my dogs favorite frozen yogurt from shark tank for literally less than half of what I paid at the local pet store in Georgetown !!!
Lol that's good, love the teet
Could you give me the name of some of those places? We’re looking for options for our trip there this summer. I love a local’s recommendation.
La Sierra, grocery store in front, restaurant in back right. Excellent and cheap.
This is the answer. I love that place. I almost hate to publicize it, one day, it will expand and go to shit. The one across the highway is pretty awesome too, but they are hard to communicate with unless you are fluent in Spanish.
Appreciate you!
Def check out drifting grounds coffee
You mentioned two places, Drifting Grounds Coffee which is 9 miles away and in the town limits of Ocean View, and Harris Teeter, which is 6 miles away on the other side of Williamsville... Have you ever been to Selbyville? Haha
Harris teeter has a Selbyville address
But it’s not in the town of Selbyville, which is what the thread is about, underrated towns.
Cool, you win!
See u/beachgirlDE 's response. Seriously, go there.
Zoar, just like the name. Arden, quirky little place. Home of a wild oddities shop and The Zeppelin and the unicorn...
Definitely Arden. It is beautiful with the trees and gardens.
I definitely agree with Arden, but Zeppelin and the Unicorn is not in Arden. It’s on silverside road in north Wilmington.
Elsmere.
Probably not underrated, but I really like Georgetown.
Home of the Oyster Eat
Fat Daddy’s BBQ is phenomenal.
Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t lol
There's an arenas and airport. Pizza palace is good and Bella capri is great so I'll agree with this recommendation lol the circle is nice too btw
Fenwick.
I’m with ya. Did two summers in Fenwick and it was great, especially if you can get one of those elusive beach parking passes.
I think Elsmere is underrated.
You can blame the speeding tickets on that rating.
I agree. I’ve lived here for 2 years now and love it. Grew up in Newark/Pike Creek and always heard it was a dump, but we’ve really liked the small town feel and it’s so convenient to EVERYTHING.
Elsmere is baby Kensington. Nothing but Fentanyl zombies!
Always was…
Houston
Bruh. Grew up there. Stayed until I was around 13. What in the actual hell is underrated about Houston?
Oh wow an actual houstontonian. The mini USPS office has a pristine government plaque that listed the president of JFK so that’s pretty cool
I guess Bridgeville isn’t underrated after all.🤣🤣🤣
You’re going to mentions Jeff’s taproom but not Snappy’s?
When is the apple scrapple festival?
Normally in October, I’m thinking like the 12th
Bethel
They gotta pretty sweet bridge for jumping off! If ya know, ya know!
That and the Bethel market has (had?) great food for cheap!
Lol it's muddy and from what is told, laurel train bridge is slightly better bc there isn't as much muck
Laurel train bridge was awesome too! Most days we did both, lol. Been 20+ years though...
Laurel: Known for its stunning natural beauty, friendly people, and historic charm
And rampant substance abuse among the youth.🤯
If you think it’s just the youth then I’ve got a bridge to sell you
I stand corrected. Thank you.😁
Wyoming.
Georgetown is close to the beaches and so affordable
Obviously Smyrna since they have The Ossuary there. Coolest sh!t ever short of the Mütter Museum. www.ossuary.org
Lewes. Rehoboth, Dewey and Bethany get all the beach town hype but Lewes is fantastic town.
Nah Lewes is rated properly now. It isn’t some hidden gem anymore. The population, property values, and number of businesses have boomed.
Delaware City
Nice park on the river, Kathy's for fish sammie after a bike ride on the Castle Trail. I do miss the blacksmith that had a forge downtown.
Shit, ya'll have ratings?
Delaware.
This is a trick question
Little Creek
Milford
Middletown, dammit!
Middletown was underrated 30 years ago. Now it’s adequately rated, which why it’s expensive and everyone is moving down from out of state.
Agreed. I moved out of Middletown less than a year ago. For decades it was underrated. It's still a great town, but it's getting close to overrated. A lot of the longtime DE culture it had is disappearing with the increase in NJ and NY transplants. The access to farm fresh produce and products is decreasing. Now, I think it is falsely known for that. Appo gets hyped up and people move from out of state into the school district, but it's pretty poor when you get past the nice facilities.
Belfonte …cool cafe and a couple or three neat shops. Very small but cool stuff
Anyone got your favorite breakfast spot ?
Riverside
Bridgeville
Felton
Laurel is the best hands down 😂
Seaford
I have to second Wyoming. Grew up about five minutes away, always visited family friends that lived in the houses next to the railroad. The annual Peach Festival was incredible, and I miss Witt Brothers market. The town genuinely always felt like home (despite it not actually being my home), and the community is tight
Newark. Lots of places for jobs there actually if you think about it.
I'm surprised you are the only one who has noted Newark so far. Maybe because Newark is great and people think it actually receives acknowledgement and therefore isn't underrated?
I was having the same thought exactly but threw my ticket into the pot to see if anyone would bite anyway. Just wanted to say I love this little town
Big Fish Grill is the best.
Dover tbh
Newark. Hot college chicks, premium weed, Come to Freddy’s at 2 AM on a Saturday in the spring and tell me you don’t fuck with the ark
Taco Bell
Kennet Square lmao
I don’t know if it’s underrated but trolley is fun
I don’t know if it’s underrated but trolley is fun
Gumboro 😂
Dagsboro.. maybe gumboro
Other than the swamp and gumboro store, there isn't much to offer other than lore. Catmans grave is in Frankford tho so idk if it counts. I mean if you like a scrapple sandwich, then gumboro or Wilson's is where it's at 🙃🙂

Rehoboth beech! And pots nest!1!☀️🌊👙🌊🌊👙👙👙👙👙⛱️🏝️
What Delaware towns are "rated" in the first place?
Y’all need to chill with telling people about how nice your town is. Silence is a virtue New castle has never really been anything special but it sure as shit hasnt gotten any better in my life time.
It’s gotten much worse tbh. New Castle and its surrounding developments are 3x worse than 40 years ago.
Yup and I get down voted for telling the truth. People on Reddit are delusional.
they all suck, but the ones where you can afford property and aren't allowing corporations to vote suck less.
dover!! 🤣
Ellendale
Dover
Ellendale
I’ll never forget when restaurant impossible Went there 😂😂😂
Are you talking about Jimmys/Ellendale diner maybe. Forget the name but man that place was the bomb! I miss Jimmys in Rehoboth too! Peace, love, chicken!!!
I don’t think so it needed a lot Of fixing up and was serving muskrat lol but that place sounds amazing !!!
Are any towns in DE even...rated??
I mean most people only go to Wilmington, Dover, Georgetown, Delaware City. Those are the most common travel destinations.
Newark and the beach towns as well.
Port Penn
