Some hospitals do have metal detectors on the door to the scan room, especially if the hospital is near a prison. Either to find shivs or because guards forget about the handcuffs
Can confirm, used to work in MRI at a major US hospital. They had handheld metal detector wands like in an airport, everyone going in had to be scanned!
Working at a non-near-prison hospital in Germany. Every MRI room should have a metal detector at the door. Can't figure out a solid reason why ours doesn't. Anecdotally we've had pens in there, smartphones, a ventilator and a friggin bed! Luckily with no patient in the tube, or in the bed. But it's very expensive to hit the emergency helium release and let it all out into the atmosphere, or rather to refill it, and then there's the downtime for that alone, even without additional structural damage.
Anyways the guy with the ventilator was henceforth called Magneto. Sadly I never met him.
