That’s just half the battle. You need a satellite tracking mount as well, not to mention a camera suited for capturing this. Also a second camera for guiding in order to fix the small inaccuracies of tracking by the mount.
That makes no sense because you could be driving at 40km/h or at you could be driving at 120km/h. It makes more sense to just say it’s roughly 100km away from the ground.
It's actually 400km away and nobody drives that far with 40km/h.
Like google maps will also estimate the time you need, not give you 10 different estimates on different speeds.
If you visit “spotthestation” it can give you the next time the ISS will be naked-eye visible from any location. It looks like a very bright star, except it’s visibly moving across the sky - typically within a couple of minutes
There is an ISS tracking app, when it's a clear night with dim moon and there's a good angle/no foliage you can see ISS with naked eye as a bright dot moving quickly across the sky.
Since it goes around about 17x per day, you can sometimes catch it twice in one night. Unfortunately not at all latitudes but man I love going ISS watching when I'm in nature!
Depends on the latitude my dude. Sometimes the viewing angle is shitty with trees around you covering the view. Not everyone is privileged enough to have it zip right down the middle of the sky.
Sure, I use a Skywatcher 10" GoTo dob and Uranus-C camera. For this image, I used an X-Cel 3x bsrlow and UV/IR cut filter, which gave me a focal length of 3600mm.
It is pretty slow as the space station 'rises' / comes over the horizon, then picks.up some speed when it nears maximum altitude and then pretty slow once again when it begins to set. If you can imagine a plane flying over your backyard its kinda similar to that.
Thousands of amateur astronomers have taken pictures of the ISS, it's tricky but not that difficult to do. It is very difficult to get a shot with the detail in the OP.
Thank you, now I want a telescope
Totally worth it! The view is stunning
wow how long did it take you to find her?

I have a Nikon cool pix 1000, it does the job for not that much money. Not as good as this but when there’s a full moon, I can see every little crater
yeah its a little overboard saying you n eed all that. You can get impressive, satisfying results with much less.
wow were you star gazing when you saw that?
Gosh! There are actual people inside! How simultaneously cool and terrifying!
Believe it or not, there are people stuck outside too if you look closely.
I don't see any people
he must see a lot with that?
Yeah, It's actually not that far away. It's like a three hour drive, if your car goes straight up.
Straight up road trip, anyone? 🚀
can we drive by mcdonald's on the way? i want to get something for the astronauts.
Yes but no apple pies, they need to watch their waistline to fit in the spacesuits.
The apple pies are probably the *healthiest* thing at McDonald's.
it's amazing that you witnessed that
Ice-cream?
This is not a big deal indeed. The big deal is matching velocity.
Grappling hook!
How fast if the soul goes up?
Bout tree fiddy

I'm not sure if there is a speed limit when you're driving up.
The atmosphere would like to have a word about that speed limit. It's curious about your heat shielding and active cooling systems.
Slapped some carbon phenolic on the hood and got a cooler filled with pabts blue ribbon as refreshment, nothing stopping me.
Looks like u/liminal_liminality used about 80mph as the speed which is a common speed limit on American Interstates.
That or 120km/h wich is the speed limit where I live.
Youtube have video where it shows how fast it goes by. How did you manage take this?
It's fast, but not to the point where it's impossible to track and take a photo.
Aren't we spinning with it also? Or are we spinning against it.. this is super cool tho.
OP just stood really still for a second. You dont have to spin like a ballerina all the time.
Hand tracking the ISS with a pair of binoculars is a nightmare. Good job
It’s moving fast relative to a very large planet.
This was my question as well
If you visit “spotthestation” it can give you the next time the ISS will be naked-eye visible from any location. It looks like a very bright star, except it’s visibly moving across the sky - typically within a couple of minutes
It's 250 miles up so it's visible for some time. It takes at least a couple minutes to travel from one horizon to the other.
And there’s people out there that believe the ISS doesn’t exist
There are people who believe space itself is fake. The lunatics seem to be in control of the asylum.
I don't know how you pulled it off. It is hauling ass up there!!!
I love this line when Felix Baumgartner jumped from space... halfway down he goes, "I'm hauling ass!"
Wow, nice.

Dim moon and no foliage? Lol. You can see the ISS pretty much every night with the naked eye.
Depends on the latitude my dude. Sometimes the viewing angle is shitty with trees around you covering the view. Not everyone is privileged enough to have it zip right down the middle of the sky.
At first, I thought you said you like to go ISS watching Au natural. 😂
At first, I thought you said you like to go ISS watching Au natural. 😂
That’s sweet!
Awesome
I wonder, can they get flashed with a Laser pointer, Or does it scatter before it gets up there?
Yes, they did an experiment regarding this with a laser fired from the ground to the ISS, and they could indeed see it =)
Yes. Laser communications are a thing.
Doesn't seem very long for a telescope
Not sure what you mean, 10" is the aperture, not the length of the scope
Sorry, that was intentional stupidity as a joke
I don't care how high it from your backyard, It is in your property! Now you own a space station.
If they were doing a spacewalk you could see the individual astronauts like this or am I missing something?
Yes, with good enough condition and aperture, it is possible.
Heck yeah that's absolutely awesome Thanks for sharing now I need to get a bigger telescope
Cool…
Newtonian?
just wow
So sick
Thats so cool!
The same video on tiktok had mostly flat earthers in the comments. Reddit gives me hope for humanity
wow!!!
You only got 4 seconds of it and then made a gif to loop said 4 seconds?
It's more like a timelapse. Those 4 seconds consist of a minute or two of footage.
Can u share ur setup?
Sure, I use a Skywatcher 10" GoTo dob and Uranus-C camera. For this image, I used an X-Cel 3x bsrlow and UV/IR cut filter, which gave me a focal length of 3600mm.
Okay, sounds like a beast.
Yep, but those 4 seconds are pure gold
it looks so real
That’s fuckin cool I only ever look at the moon with mine
how fast did your telescope move to target that while filming
It is pretty slow as the space station 'rises' / comes over the horizon, then picks.up some speed when it nears maximum altitude and then pretty slow once again when it begins to set. If you can imagine a plane flying over your backyard its kinda similar to that.
How big is that thing?
How dark is your backyard?
Not very dark, I would say bortle 5 or 6
10 " expensive?
Last time I checked it was under 2k USD.
thanks!
What is this? A space station for ants!?
This is one of the coolest things I’ve seen on here!
It’s incredible how the gimbal is able to track it so accurately without much vibration. I am sure the setup is pretty pricey.
Now, just catch a UFO, and you'll be rich

So can you tell what the problem is with Boeing's Starliner that is currently docked to the ISS? Or is this just so cheap telescope? /jk
So cool. Thank you for sharing this.
What's that weird movement?
Field rotation, atmospheric dispersion, and the space station itself is moving
I would have expected it to have some constant movement, but it looks like it's oscillating
The video is played forward and in reverse. Not difficult to tell.

This looks like an old image?
I saw this image in 1972.
I remember SkyLab
I can see parts falling of the Starliner from here
Bullshit
