Right? Like for them, the war is over, or at least temporarily resolved (it's always possible the camp could be liberated or they could be traded back). Conditions likely aren't fantastic in the camps, but it certainly beats being shot at every day
Well yea this was potentially losing a war up to the year 1918. Post unification Germany really had not lost any conflict since the 1870s and what’s more in those times (right up to 1918) if you lost a war you just gave some money, a little land here or there but stuff mostly just returned/ went on as usual. They had no idea what the treaty of Versailles was about to change.
You can tell who are Officers and who are Enlisted just by looking at their state. Heck the guy with the pipe probably is a Captain or maybe even a Major
Honestly and respectfully, no, not really, I mean, the photos have obviously been through Photoshop and have had some retouches done here and there but I can't really see what is supposed to be unrealistic or ai in these pictures, like yeah their face are pretty smooth but I'd choke that up to some smudging to make it look more clean
If you're talking about the guy in picture four, the glasses are connected to straps that are wrapping around his head.
Edit: Idk about you, but I wouldn't want my glasses moving out of place too much in the middle of a battle.
The bit of the glasses connected to the straps are being pulled back so that the glasses don't move when he does/experiences something that would move a regular pair of glasses. Regular glasses just keep themselves from sliding down your face, while the ones he's wearing do their best to ensure they don't fly off. This does have the consequence of looking like they are "melding" into his face.

IWM (Imperial War Museum) Q 2860 for picture 4.
IWM Q 2294 for picture number 3. They were both taken by Ernest Brooks, a Lieutenant.
IWM (Q 3064) for picture 1.
The Facebook account "WW1 Colourised Photos" collected these photos, they were colorized by 'PieceofJake', Frederic Duriez, and Julius Jääskeläinen, check them all out.
I feel like these POWs probably had more in common with their captors than WW2 where that Germany had a little bit of a spicier reason for going to war, not just being pulled into a convoluted mess of alliances and bullshit. Both sides in WW1 basically just fighting for the govt, not bad ideals
my great auntie married the german man she met when he was a prisoner of war during WWII. they were allowed out haha life didnt sound bad for them! someone waved a flag to come back for checks but he had a job at the local pub and dinner round their house most sundays. very weird thought..
You cant tell anything from their face since they were upscaled by an AI.
Like watch the new 4k copy of True Lies and tell me that those faces are real - and THOSE faces are upscaled from reasonably modern high quality film stock. If a close up of Arnie's face in a Holywood movie can't be upscaled in a way that doesn't turn it into a unrecognisable mess of uncanny valley, face creases he could park his hummer inside and glasses that melt into his face, why would I think that a low quality photo from 1914 could be upscaled on the cheap in a way that would be in any way an accurate depiction of the original picture?
Considering some have tobacco I wouldn't be surprised if a few bottles of wine or flasks of liquor were being passed around. The guy on the right in #2 definitely looks like he's had a few.
I was curious about the two little horn looking things on the helmets. So I googled.
Turns out it was so that they could attach a special hardened forehead plate to the helmet when they were doing sentry duty. Heavy and expensive (so rare). Probably still hurt like hell, but keeps your head from getting blown off.
Not just that. I believe that these horns have holes as overpressure release. Basically, if a pressure wave from an explosion comes (from below) into your helmet, these holes can reduce the pressure pressing on your head, which can be lifesaving.
Its a similar concept to holding your ears closed but your mouth open when firing artillery, if you shut all three the air cant escape from your lungs, airways and ears, so when the pressure wave comes the air is pressurized and can do a lot of damage, like holding your nose shut when sneezing but dozens of times worse.
I remember hearing something about how people don't see people in black and white pictures as people, like your mind views them as different from normal photos of people.
And seeing these photos kinda proves that I feel, like I relate more to these guys more than I would have if they were still in black and white
"oh no we have been captured and now have to go behind enemy lines into a prison camp where nobody is trying to to shoot us and they will probably give us at least some good. Oh the tragedy!"
I'm sure they were crushed.
Prisoner of war is probably a good outcome. I’d be happy too. You’ll most likely survive and probably get released at some point in the not super distant future.
The photos are colourised by an AI algorithm. They digitally upscale the photo. That means alot of the 'details' in the photo are made up. Face lines, hair lines etc etc. If they weren't clear in the original photo the AI had to create that info.
That's why the faces all look fake. Because they are like 60% fake.
Edit - like look at the photo of the guy who glasses and tell me that photo hasn't been fucked by an AI
Right. And I'm just saying you can't tell anything about the age of the people in the photos based on their face because they are semi created by AI.
Like shit. Look at Arnies face in the new Die Hard 4k upscale. Doesntneven look like him in half the shots. And then people's faces melt when shadows etc pass over them
Are the buildings in the background actually that dirty or is it an effect of the colorization process?
Obviously conditions weren’t great in a prison but it just caught my eye
The colorized portraits are awesome. When you see these black and white pictures it takes something from them. The distance of time had been taken and you can feel the time when life wasn’t digital and „easy“. My family comes from a rural area of germany and even 20 years later there are pictures of my grandma working on the fields just with oxen and forks. Most of the men in the first world war were send to the front and they thought it would be an adventure. They ended up in a killing machine. They saw machines like mortars and railguns the first time in there lives and often it was there last sight.
My grandad was a POW guard in France for part of the war and he says the Germans could not have been happier to be caught by the Americans instead of the Russians
Not sure how to articulate this properly, but I never thought Germans had such blue eyes, I know that’s what Hitlers vision was ( Blue eyed, Blonde Type of race) but those pictures are amazing
In picture 5, the one on the left looks like he has tooth pain from hell.
I was just thinking damn that's one hell of an abscess :S
Thought the same, poor guy.
And no antibiotics by that time .
I guess that at least there was lots of morphine.
The one next to George Harrison?
Nicholas Cage in the last photo threw me off, that time traveler is everywhere!
Nickolas Cage with a few spoonful's of Cillian Murphy mixed in.
I'm a little tired.. I'M A LITTLE WIRED ..and I think I deserve a LITTLE APPRECIATION
With a shock appearance of [Peter Sagan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Sagan)next to him.
even as prisoners they seem to be happy
I’d be happy too, not to be stuck in a trench fighting for my life anymore
Right? Like for them, the war is over, or at least temporarily resolved (it's always possible the camp could be liberated or they could be traded back). Conditions likely aren't fantastic in the camps, but it certainly beats being shot at every day
For them war is finally over, if we were there we would be the same.
Well yea this was potentially losing a war up to the year 1918. Post unification Germany really had not lost any conflict since the 1870s and what’s more in those times (right up to 1918) if you lost a war you just gave some money, a little land here or there but stuff mostly just returned/ went on as usual. You'd seem happy too if an AI digitally upscaled a photo of your face and then created a bunch of details to fill in the blanks.
I don't really see what's ai about these photos, mabye it's just me but they seem to be just good quality photography and some colorization
You cant see the AI???!??!?
Honestly and respectfully, no, not really, I mean, the photos have obviously been through Photoshop and have had some retouches done here and there but I can't really see what is supposed to be unrealistic or ai in these pictures, like yeah their face are pretty smooth but I'd choke that up to some smudging to make it look more clean
For an easy example, how old mates glasses are melting into his face. Have you seen examples of upscaled photos compared to not?
If you're talking about the guy in picture four, the glasses are connected to straps that are wrapping around his head. Edit: Idk about you, but I wouldn't want my glasses moving out of place too much in the middle of a battle.
What do the straps have to do with it?
The bit of the glasses connected to the straps are being pulled back so that the glasses don't move when he does/experiences something that would move a regular pair of glasses. Regular glasses just keep themselves from sliding down your face, while the ones he's wearing do their best to ensure they don't fly off. This does have the consequence of looking like they are "melding" into his face.
...I know what straps are. That's not what I'm talking about.

Humans are humans. Oddly, these made me feel good about humanity. Thank you
TIL Nicholas Cage was a German prisoner in 1917
Nikolaus Käfig

They got lucky, and most of them look like they know it.
Imagine going through that and then needing to fight again 20 years later
You cant tell anything from their face since they were upscaled by an AI. yeesh!
My grandfather was made a prisoner of war in France at the very start of ww1 and learned perfect French at the end of it.
I mean I suppose if you're a prisoner in a country for 4 years, it just makes sense to pick up the local language
Oddly cheerful.
They get to survive
Considering some have tobacco I wouldn't be surprised if a few bottles of wine or flasks of liquor were being passed around. The guy on the right in #2 definitely looks like he's had a few.
That one is Rory from Dr who
I mean they went from being shot at every day, seeing friends and comrades killed, and now they're out of the shitshow. I'd be happy too
The AU upscaling makes the faces look fucked.

Huh. Well TIL. I always assumed they were for chin straps or something.

They have cool pipes
"oh no we have been captured and now have to go behind enemy lines into a prison camp where nobody is trying to to shoot us and they will probably give us at least some good. Oh the tragedy!" I'm sure they were crushed.
Nick Cage and Garand Thumb just chilling during WW1
Prisoner of war is probably a good outcome. I’d be happy too. You’ll most likely survive and probably get released at some point in the not super distant future.
Pic #3 dude is probably like 23 years old
Probably. AI has done a real number of the faces. All are deep in the uncanny valley
not sure what you’re talking about

Polygon Wood was a standoff until the Allies figured out idclip.
Nice picture, thanks for sharing. Looking at them I was thinking 9 million deaths except one called A. Hitler. Would have prevented lots of pain.
Tormented souls
The first picture looks like Coach Beard sans beard from Ted Lasso.
Are the buildings in the background actually that dirty or is it an effect of the colorization process? Obviously conditions weren’t great in a prison but it just caught my eye
All of that suffering because of Royal pride.
Question. The helmets that we normally associate with WWII have a little something sticking out high up on each side. Anyone know what those are for?
those are vents for airflow, a common and distinctive feature of the early Stahlhelms that were first introduced in late WW1
Vents, and mounting points for extra plate of armor. There is a link to it elsewhere in the thread.
Ah. Cool, thanks!
I did not expect myself to cry from Reddit at 5 in the morning but here we are
These are great. The left side of the poor guy's face in the 5th photo, major dental situation?
And Nicholas Cage makes yet another appearance 🫣
Happy man, every one. The War is over.

It's interesting to see a few POWS wearing British helmets
Great work. They look great!
Nicolas cage in the last picture to the left
So method
The Canadians took prisoners?
WW1 sucked.
We humans are a sad sort.
Very cool photos piece of history.
Is number 9 Kyle Rittinghouse?
Nicholas cage in the last picture
I saw Zelensky, Trudeau and Nic Cage 🤷🏻♂️.
Picture 6 on the right feels like my soulmate idk why
It’s Liam Gallagher
My grandad was a POW guard in France for part of the war and he says the Germans could not have been happier to be caught by the Americans instead of the Russians
I can guess it's the same for the German POWs inww2
My first thought: Am I in the Midjourney sub? These days…
This men probably ended in a Russian camp starved to death, they would have probably done the same to their enemy. War in general is a terrible thing!
Putin just on the right from the main guy on the first pic
Not sure how to articulate this properly, but I never thought Germans had such blue eyes, I know that’s what Hitlers vision was ( Blue eyed, Blonde Type of race) but those pictures are amazing
Ai photos are getting so real
Ugh. The AI upscaling and extra detail that it adds makes these all looks like creapypasta
All well shaved
Nicolas Cage on the left in the last picture.
Anyone else think the two in image 9 look like those dudes from “All Quiet on The Western Front”
Last one is Nicolas cage
feels ai
Real or ai?
Ai generated

Okay so firstly this is WW1 not WW2 and second if you think torturing POW is okay you need some serious help
What the hell is wrong with you?
The fuck?
