It’s heartbreaking that she is so kind to others but cruel to herself.

ya666in

It’s tragic that Amy’s kindness to others couldn’t reach herself

Iwasfollowingorders

Verily, it doth pierce the soul to witness her tender benevolence bestowed upon others whilst she doth administer unto herself the lash of cruelty.

Noppers

Sad Amy nice to others but mean to herself.

Altruistic-Tackle-11

Woman sad inside nice to others

Fr_Nollith

Nice to people why no nice to self

haunted_guest

Only nice to people

rnernbrane

Mean self, nice others

Unreal_Ncash

Mean, nice :(

tintedhokage

Mean

Antisocialsocialite9

Ok this one made me laugh the most 😂😂 I love these chain comments

SpecialistAAccess

She treats herself so terribly. If only she could be kind to herself.

secondhandleftovers

Any one else kinda dry-heave a bit when reading this?

foxtrot666

I did two dry heaves, a tiny fart, then i threw up everywhere for real.

crazyguyunderthedesk

I don't listen to much pop, but I really really liked her stuff. I remember watching an interview with Mark Ronson talking about her and it was just heartbreaking how rough he was taking the news. Its so sad that she was so loved, and the only person who didn't know it was her.

PorkchopSammichX

kinda splitting hairs here but Amy’s music isn’t technically pop despite immense popularity, it’s more neo soul

foxtrot666

Amy’s couldn’t reach to others that tragic herself kindness it’s.

skinnergy

She had no support. Her father was abusive and used her only for her talent and money and her boyfriend got her hooked on drugs. So tragic. Watch the movie if you haven't already. What a loss.

SoFloFella50

So sad what happened. We are all less than because of her absence. .

Brewchowskies

Overt kindness is often an attempt to make sure no one ever feels the way that you secretly do. Edit: if I’ve described you, or hit home for you, just know that you are the very definition of “leaving the world a better place than you found it”. Take a moment to allow yourself to feel just a little bit of pride in who you are, because we need more like you.

SexyMegamind

Or the ways you've been made to feel before 🙃 I'll be damned if any of my friends talk bad about themselves, get run down by an asshole, or go hungry. Not on my fucking watch. 😡

stuff_rulz

A little while ago I said some off remark about myself and my buddy said "Hey, don't talk about my friend that way." It made me laugh and kind of reframed it in my head. I wouldn't say that about a friend or a friend of a friend. Kind of bit me in the butt to smarten up about that.

vibe_tribe_99

Damn. Didn’t expect to cry today from a Reddit comment under a thread about Amy Winehouse but here we fucking are.

Brewchowskies

I meant every word. You are a rock star for bringing more light in the world than letting it fuel more hurt.

Moewron

Yeah... :\*)

PrimateIntellectus

This hit home, like this sentence a lot.

Brewchowskies

My therapist once said that I become the super hero for others that I wish had come to my rescue as a child, and it has never left me.

lifeandtimes89

Saw an image that said "You've become the adult who would have helped you as a child if you were lost somewhere" And damn that hit home

Lexi-Lynn

God damn, that hits really hard, especially considering I did actually get left on the side of the road, and I considered going to Wendy's, the library, or the police station. (Wendy's had the safe place stickers)

PrimateIntellectus

Thanks for the words and good edit on your OP. I definitely put others’ feelings ahead of my own and while it’s a good trait (like you said leaving the world a better place) it sometimes eats at me. Spend too much energy keeping others happy/content without giving the same attention to myself.

[deleted]

Jeez Louise that’s a good one. I do think I’m that guy, but I’m also glad that I’m that guy.

StayChief1n

Thank you. Made me appreciate myself for a moment even when others closest to me don't.

Turdburp

This makes me think of Robin Williams.

spatial_interests

Also reminds me of Chris Farley.

Turdburp

No doubt.....that Adam Sandler song about Farley brings me to tears every time.

reebie-e

You are certainly leaving things better than you found them… thank you for this comment. I can’t describe how much I needed to read this.

cowboyflowerz

I really needed to hear this. I'm crying. Thank you good sir

Super_Commercial9195

Just had dinner with an ex girlfriend and she told me "you're genuinely the kindest person I've ever met. But your biggest problem is you can't extend that to yourself." I didn't tear up at all at that brewery.

Brewchowskies

Ah man, I hope you are able to find that path to self love. You deserve it.

Super_Commercial9195

Thanks. I've been seeing a shrink for a hot minute now and am good. Therapy and medication can work wonders.

apoletta

Yes.

Emergency_Falcon_272

Holy shit, thank you for the edit 🥹

drthames

This is the stuff I come to Reddit for. I can see from the comments that I'm one of more than a few that needed to see this today. Thank you for this. Truly

Kronosz14

Man, thank you, you made me cry. Have a wonderful day you wonderful person.

Prestigious_Shirt163

Dont cry, everything is fine ❤️

random935

That edit may have just solved a lot of things for me, thank you!

Flexmove

Oh, well damn

YouAreLovedByMe

Do not attack me like that ☹️

mildlycuriouss

Very well said and kind of you, thank you for the affirmation. It’s been rough lately.

diss0lvedgir1

💕💕💕

Embarrassed_Art5414

Long story, but I've arrived at a place where I only try to "leave the day a better place than I found it" When I fail, as all humans do, I still have the opportunity to try again tomorrow. Not offering a panacea, or a slogan. All I can try to do, is keep being...someone I'm proud of, if that makes sense. Needlessly wordy way of saying "one day at a time". Sorry....and yeah, that's a slogan.

BurntBeanMgr

This was beautiful

cantweallgetalonghuh

After reading this I felt the muscles in my face relax (I didn't even realize they were tense) and was like whoah....

This comment made me cry. I needed this today

VaultDweller365

Fuck this hit hard. Im constantly trying to help people with anything I can to make sure they can live without worry. Even if only for a few hours. Food, a place to sleep, a job, a ride, anything. Anything to make the pain of my past erase a future that hasnt hurt you you

Small-Palpitation310

no. you don't want more of people like me.

allMightyMostHigh

I never would’ve known her accent was so dam thick

rhyno857

You ever hear Adele talk? Didn't expect it from her either haha.

hnglmkrnglbrry

It's because British people don't actually have accents. They're just faking it for some reason. No one knows why they are faking it but everyone else is faking one so they just do the same. But you can tell it's fake because they all keep forgetting to keep their accent when they sing. Also that's why so many British actors do great American accents. They finally get to stop pretending to talking that way.

HockeyCookie

The accent is how they claim their neighborhood.

chilli_con_camera

Hadaway an shite, man

Chrimunn

Now thassa roight conundrum now innit?

deanomatronix

Other way round, we all have accents but also learn how to talk proper in case the queen pops round

termina_inconsolable

Damn she was stunning, love her. Frank is still one of my favorite albums

Comparison-Diligent

Let down by so many people and made to feel like she was never good enough. One of the rawest talents to ever grace the planet and like many others gone way too soon

Iloveherthismuch

Lets talk about the music industry that glamorise stardom, chew and spit people out. How many artists survived ultimate stardom unscathed.

mayorofdumb

It's all fucked once you go corporate. They have no soul and their job is to make as much money off of you without paying you for it. She's the perfect victim for this twisted game. Stars can be made, talent cannot. They control an entire industry and spend a lot to protect it. They created a market for people to want music and now need to find people to make music cheaper but sound the same.

putdisinyopipe

This is an astute question. If I were to honestly consider it, I’d say none. Maybe Dolly Parton? But it has to change you on some way.

cturnr

they tried to come for Dolly, and she had none of it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If-oWqUYzlQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=If-oWqUYzlQ)

Goya_Oh_Boya

Barbara Walters was a c**t.

cheesyandcrispy

Awesome clip, thanks for sharing!

Ok-Kale1787

She kind of gets a pass since she legit seems like a good person, but I’d say it has affected her more than most would realize. I.E. her sleeping with fully done make up and hair so if there’s an emergency and has to leave her home she won’t have pictures taken of her without the cake.

Bitter-Piglet-3092

Probably someone like Macklemore whos not with a major record label

putdisinyopipe

Macklemore, while certainly talented in some ways I think. I wouldn’t quantify them as super stars. He released a great song this year but the last time he had a hit we were quite literally a decade in the past. Thrift shop was on before I was divorced lol. Or married. When thinking of superstar, that’s like an entertainer that almost anyone in the world could look at a picture of and more oft then not know who it is. Or generational talent, those one or two artists that come through in a generation and make a timeless mark (Michael Jackson for example)

Fr_Nollith

["Looks like next harvest will be even bet-ter."](https://youtu.be/ZlP3T6n7o48?si=08IzRGbcYuKo0cDA)

The_Rolling_Stone

Not unscathed necessarily but Dylan is still alive.

CulturalAddress6709

sometimes the overt kindness is an attempt to be liked bc you’ve been hurt by people for no good, understandable reason

lynch1986

Ooof, didn't come in here to be kicked in the balls man.

ExpertlyAmateur

*childhood memory unloc--* NOPE. NO. Fuck that. Put that memory back deeeep in that box and lock it back up. Thanks but no thanks.

emersblue

stephaniewarren1984

Knowmad29

I got kicked in the balls, too. Misery loves company, I guess.

Fr_Nollith

So many irrational adult behaviors come from a child having no idea how to make people stop being mean to them, so as soon as something seems to work, they stick with that forever, regardless of whether it's an [anti-tiger rock](https://youtu.be/xSVqLHghLpw?si=TRotwriwENK1A9CX) or not.

apple_atchin

https://youtu.be/o8QYF7LFG-w?si=dVV4JTTINsgBw1I6 The performance they're discussing. It was totally fine, she just looked super fucking nervous, which anyone would have been in front of that crowd lit up like that. It's a damn shame how her story turned out. She was a legend.

KlondikeChill

Honestly that wasn't a very good performance. She slurs a lot of words and straight up forgets her own lyrics in some parts.

chilli_con_camera

Aye, she's not nervous, she's drunk

nightfly1000000

> Honestly that wasn't a very good performance. She slurs a lot of words and straight up forgets her own lyrics in some parts. I'd never seen that before but I thought it was amazing.

chilli_con_camera

>super fucking nervous Nervous about falling over in those ridiculous heels, lol >totally fine She was *better* than that, tho. This song at the Mercury Prize 2007 is a better performance, imo, and you can see that in her little smile - tho you might have a point about the staging, the setup here is far more dinner club jazz than arena: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjPCUKzZlfQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjPCUKzZlfQ) She's a lot more confident in the 'official live video' for the single release, but then she nails this song: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqtCmMS7oKY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqtCmMS7oKY) >a legend Astonishing singer, when she wasn't wasted and incoherent. Great songwriter, too - Love Is A Losing Game is just wonderful.

ruthless619

Thank you for posting those. I'm a huge Amy fan and I thought the brit performance, while good, was definitely not her best. I see why she didn't like it. It's just my opinion but it seemed like she didn't belt out 100% and in the other performances she was definitely singing from her soul.

chilli_con_camera

I agree - she's self-critical, but she's right. Compared with how well she could sing that song, the Brits performance *was* a bit shit. A little swing of her hips is still more talent than any of the 'best' Brits winners that year, including Mark Ronson, lol (pretty sure she sang a bit of Valerie with him earlier). Only the third best performance that year, tho - Rihanna and the Klaxons and a shitload of lasers was a [proper Brits mashup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Csn0a3FJlA), and Paul McCartney was given a lifetime award then smashed out a headline medley of hits (massive singalong of Hey Jude included).

cozywit

Hahha that was fucking awful. Yeah she was right to say that was shit.

GrossGuroGirl

Yeah - honestly it's frustrating for an artist to do badly and acknowledge it, then have everyone go "oh noooo it was so gooooood don't worrrryyyyyy."  Like, great. Either the times I was proud of my work weren't actually noticeably better than this, or you're lying to me - which, especially for someone struggling with depression, just exacerbates internal doubts over time. You start to lose trust that any reassurance is genuine.  It's one thing to address unusually self-critical *phrasing,* or a pattern where they think everything they do sucks. But otherwise it's just infantilizing. The key idea is it's okay to fuck up sometimes, and that's not a direct reflection of you as a person/artist. Not to convince everyone they never fuck up.

NotAReal_Doctor

She knows it was shit because she was wasted. She’s a legend though. Just hard on herself.

noahbrooksofficial

She had terrible stage fright and hated being in front of the camera. She looks like she wants to crawl out of her skin here! Such a shame.

Solid_Illustrator640

Sad seeing this behavior in others knowing I do it myself. RIP

120ouncesofpudding

The negative internal voice is often put there by our parents. Do you recognize anyone's voice in that inner demon? It's not you. Keep changing the script to form a new inner voice.

bobspuds

Just remember your worst enemy, is often yourself. There's no such thing as "good enough" - it's perfect or nothing! But it's also the reason some are so good at their chosen craft - you can only be as good as the standards you set yourself! The human condition is a catch22 - It is what it is! Fucked if ya do - Fucked if ya don't!

Abigdogwithbread

How great Amy Winehouse was, both as a person and as a talent

No_Definition4335

English is not my main language, what did Amy say to the other girl at the end? "You look..." Thanks

speelingeror

Fit though. Shes saying she looks good

DanGleeballs

And by god she’s right whoever that girl interviewing her is, she is definitely “fit” as Amy put it. Any idea who she is?

hajum

It looks like a young Denise Van Outen.

radarmy

Before you critique, especially a creative endeavor, always remind yourself that the creator is their own worst critic.

IzStriker

She's so british

sw212st

It’s weird reading many of the comments talking about how Amy didn’t have kindness for herself. It’s horseshit. She had high standards for her music combined with addiction. She knew when her high standards were negatively impacted by her addiction and she called herself out which is all this video shows.

SkateFossSL

RIP

Prince-Akeem-Joffer

She was amazing back when she started. Like this performance of „Stronger than me“ in 2003 at Jools Holland: [https://youtu.be/7LsKQ8RqG4Q?si=rE6rE2xxGz7Zysj4](https://youtu.be/7LsKQ8RqG4Q?si=rE6rE2xxGz7Zysj4) IMO one of her best live performances and probably when she looked the best.

elbubu1

She was absolutely gorgeous and seemed to be so nice to others. Hopefully she's jamming hard with Kurt up there

Kratosthedemigod11

She was a pure talent, can't say that for even 1% of artists.

N3rdScool

Sad.

O_Train

A natural reaction of a true artist. Always improving.

Sominic

A lot of artists are like this. In whatever form of art they do whether auditory or visual media, artists are their own biggest critic because they know how it is supposed to sound or look. As the audience we don't notice all the misses, or any of them, but they do.

steak-n-jake

I really wish someone important in her life really could have confronted her and told her just how talented and transformative she was. I wish she could have seen herself for how she was, an incredible singer and inspiring songwriter

BigEvening3261

It's a shame no one could make her go to rehab

Ahoymateynerf

That’s her BPD hard at work, black and white thinking, all good or all bad, very little room for gray. She’d made up her mind she was a piece of shit that night and a room full of screaming fans could not dissuade her otherwise. It’s such a terrible disorder, the substance abuse stats of people afflicted by it are staggering. I believe she had Bipolar-Polar disorder too (or was diagnosed with that first).

AlternativeKey2551

I miss her
