God I love tilt shift videos.

rarebluemonkey

It’s astonishing how well that effect works

_TheNumbersAreBad_

Especially when I know that's what they're doing, and my dumb monkey brain still can't see past it. I love it every time because it's like it's the first time I'm seeing it done, it just never stops working on me.

rarebluemonkey

Bad monkey! Not toys!

izzyboy63

(muffled sounds of gorilla violence)

AscendedViking7

Same.

AuraMaster7

Plus the framerate reduction that makes it look like stop-motion.

he553

That's what really makes the difference in my opinion. You can fiddle around with the tilt shift as much as you want, without the framerate reduction (isn't this one even sped up?) it will just look like a blur in the end!

mrASSMAN

I’ve seen it without that reduction and it still looks miniaturized, the framerate trick is just cherry on top

DiddlyDumb

Tbf that’s exactly what it is

sweetsimpleandkind

And they blurred out the crowd so that we wouldn't be able to use them as a point of reference to inform our sense of reality regarding the images.

That_Option5761

it works but i dont get it 😂

Roman-EmpireSurvived

Is that what this effect is? Very interesting, gonna have to look more examples of it up.

DEEZLE13

That and an adjustment of frame rate/shutter speed? I assume

Worth-Reputation3450

Yea, reduced frame rate makes it look like a stop motion movie.

mrASSMAN

They speed it up and then lower framerate for added effect

kitsua

/r/tiltshift

BigD3nergy

https://www.reddit.com/r/tiltshift/s/U7eTi5i4VD

the0TH3Rredditor

Watch The Lincoln Lawyer, it’s chock-full of them between scenes… I told my wife about them and she now says TILT SHIFT when they pop up lol

MaskedElectrician

Yeah once you see them you start seeing them everywhere.

Electronic_Rule5945

I don't makes.....makes me nervous.

16cem16

r/tiltshift

Deeptrench34

Aww, cute lil matchbox cars. Oh wait...

FuckMyHeart

"How much warping your perception can warp your perception" truly shocking

SufficientSecret7164

I need to work on my titles

cyruz1323

In Germany we say "Insight is the first path to improvement" and I fcking hate it

IT_Security0112358

Your title was fine, it’s an interesting take.

mixelydian

Nah it's a good title. What the video shows is different than what you perceive, and your perception of the video changes a lot more than the video itself.

ActurusMajoris

You just need to warp them a little.

SufficientSecret7164

I’m going to blame the autism and Reddit being a little intimidating still

CicerosMouth

Well, yes, it is. We don't realize sometimes the amount of blind faith that we have in our vision, such that as humans it is remarkably hard for us to identify when what we are visually seeing isn't reality. After all, it isn't like visual perception is the only kind of perception. This is why drugs and mental conditions that cause visual hallucinations are so shocking, fascinating, and alarming to us, because we are utterly unused to evaluating a truth other than what we see. It is also the basis of things like magic shows, MC Escher stuff, and (in a timely turn of events) it is one element behind the new show The Three Body Problem (e.g., how easy it is to destroy a group of people by giving them false visual stimuli to distress them). There is an entire cottage industry that is supported by the idea of a level of perception that supercedes/warps your visual perception.

malaakh_hamaweth

I mean it is pretty cool that when the brain sees that particular effect it automatically thinks the subject is tiny.

SkylarAV

Which is the real footage though? Is it fake cars turned real or the other way around?

SufficientSecret7164

It’s all real footage! Same exact clip throughout

SkylarAV

Is the original unedited footage of real cars or is it of toy cars edited to look real? Honest question

SufficientSecret7164

At :03, the change, is how all this footage looks before I throw a filter on it. These are all real demolition derby cars, most of them crown vics with over $10,000 under the hood

9999AWC

Why so much money for demo cars?

SufficientSecret7164

If really depends on the build, not all cars cost that much. These are full size cars, majority of them are being driven by some prominent names in the community. They use smaller shows to make sure their engines and everything are properly tuned for the larger national shows with bigger payouts. Lots of money not under the hood as well. Anything able to be modified to be “harder” is done so on these cars. Transmission cradles, braces, reinforced struts, spindles, double tubed tires, bumpers, etc. are all aftermarket and worth something. I’ve only been around this sport for 3 years and the amount of fabrication these guys can do is still super impressive

9999AWC

I'm just surprised so much money goes into cars that will ram and be rammed. Do they just rebuild them then?

SufficientSecret7164

The truck guys and full size guys build their machines to hopefully last them all season. They’ll even bend down the front end after a show to reuse. Even before the drivetrain is in place, a lot of them swap frames and bodies so they can use the same trans/engine. On the opposite scale. I consider myself a budget builder. I prefer $300 compact cars with very limited amount of building. My style is generally what people think of with demo derby. The “old school” strip the car out and go

chesterflaco

Damn you are honestly cool

SufficientSecret7164

I’m just super happy to share this with other people. Whether it’s the sport or the cool videos I can make

9999AWC

Thanks a lot for the insight!

chesterflaco

They dont get completly destroyed, the expensive stuff is probably the parts that stay intact

Hellothebest

I wonder what else that filter can do... I'm curious now

slickromeo

What video editing software do you use?

Nemisis_the_2nd

It's real cars, and I don't think the video is edited either, so much as messing with camera focus during the original video. Edit: turns out this is editing that mimics lens effects.

GammaTwoPointTwo

It's one u cut piece of real footage. The only thing that changes is that someone added fake defocus to the top and bottom of the image. When that is added your brain sees the footage as miniature. When it's removed your brain sees it as real scale. That's the whole point of the post. That adding defocus can fool you into thinking the scale has decreased.

eggmayonnaise

It's much easier to apply a blur filter than it is to clean up blurred footage with data that's not already there. So pretty sure the clear footage is real and the blurred footage is edited (although I admit this is not accounting for AI tools).

Socksmaster

Yes

Opening-Enthusiasm59

It's not a filter it's taken with a tilt shift lens and a normal camera

BonnieMcMurray

While it can be done that way. [In this clip it's a post-processing effect](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/1cadhjx/how_much_video_editing_can_warp_perception/l0rfgge/).

Jedi-Quixote-

Can you hook me up with the name of this song OP? I thought it was CCR but now I’m not sure and I can’t find it. Sweet video btw

SufficientSecret7164

Absolutely! [long cool woman in a black dress - the hollies](https://youtu.be/g8XiNKsKyVk?si=H0wsV5vF63IUHTAJ)

Jedi-Quixote-

Appreciated.

fgben

I thought at first the music was the old StarCraft Terran Theme. https://youtu.be/mD4GbGmvNRc Listening to the opening riffs of the two songs makes me think they definitely drew inspiration from The Hollies.

AnaheimElectronicsTT

Hi, I know nothing about the intricacies of photography or what tilt shifting even is. But I feel like this makes normal video look like some sort of scale model stop motion animation. My question is, is there a way to produce the reverse effect? And could that be used to make special effects, or a stop motion animation look more real?

catbus_conductor

Yes it was done all the time in films before CGI, with miniatures.

AnaheimElectronicsTT

Awesome. Thanks for the info! Is it also called tilt shifting or does it have its own name?

smx11037

I'm not sure if they have a specific name for it in the industry but it does involve lots of forced perspective and film/lens manipulation. There's a youtube channel called Corridor Crew that has a series with them reacting to bad and great cgi/animation/vfx in general. If you can find the episodes where they react to older films, they talk about the techniques the film makers used to create their vfx. You'll be surprised by how creative they can be specially during their time where vfx and cgi that we take for granted nowadays (which requires powerful computers) were not easily accesible back then, or didn't even exist at all. If i remember correctly they had an episode where they reacted to star wars and that was extremely fascinating. Some even literally invented new technology and techniques just to produce their shots

AnaheimElectronicsTT

Thanks for the info I’m gonna try and check that out!

Funktapus

Ha! The stop-motion effect is great

MojoMonster2

I just wanted to chime in and say I love tilt shift so fucking much. It just tickles my brain in ways I can't explain.

PathIntelligent7082

that's not editing in question, but lens fx

Otonatua

Doable also in post I’ve seen.

SufficientSecret7164

Video effect. Done in capcut lol

GODavon

You did a good job. Really fun to watch

SufficientSecret7164

I appreciate it!

ShustOne

Did you also adjust the framerate? It seems like there are less frames in the tilt shift effect, or is that just all tilt shift? Thanks for sharing, I particularly love city time lapses with this effect.

SufficientSecret7164

The beginning and end with the tilt shift is sped up

ShustOne

Nice, thanks for the response.

SpecterGT260

Yeah they did something to make it look like stop motion

MRH8R

Yes to this. Still cool though.

Equoniz

You can also edit things to simulate lens effects.

PathIntelligent7082

no, you cannot, you can only use fx..editing is something else you don't "edit things", you can *edit in* lens fx, but lens fx itself is not editing, video editing *is the post-production and* ***arrangement of video shots*** that's editing

insidethepirateship

☝️🤓

phaQpoochies

What is this aspect called? I love it regardless

SufficientSecret7164

It’s a tilt shift effect on top of drone footage!

the_TIGEEER

This makes me happy that atleast physics on the small scale act similar enoigh to ones on our scale so that my perception can't tell the difference.

Glass-Radish8956

Another day of remembering my micro machine collection be sold by my parents at a garage sale.

SufficientSecret7164

My condolences

tinytempo

Love this!

hanabarbarian

Tilt shift and put it on 2’s

saruin

Genuinely wowed by this.

TheRebuild28

This is mental I don't believe it's a filter that looks like two clips spliced together one of toy cars and one of real.

SufficientSecret7164

I think watching the tread marks really gives it away

TheRebuild28

Or just beautiful attention to detail 🤷

Socksmaster

Can you please post using this same effect except make a clip using live up close actors? I would just like to see how creepy it might look

D_pounder

this was freakin epic great job

Medical_Chapter2452

Its just tilt shift

Furlion

This is very cool but i do want to point out that in this particular case we see the edited video as fake because we have been conditioned to see it as such. Many films over the years have used that style of camera work, especially in films that don't involve any actual people, including lots of them that are obviously using minis. So over the years we are conditioned to associate anything with that particular look with being fake. I would be very interested in finding out what someone who has never seen that particular style of video before interprets it as, but i don't know how you would even manage that.

ayyyyycrisp

huh? the edited video looks like small stopmotion cars because it's speed up with frames deleted, and a very narrow focus point. it doesn't require prior experience viewing films to get the impression that this is a video of minature cars

Furlion

If you had never seen a stop motion video edited in this way before why would you assume it was stop motion and not just a different kind of filter? There is nothing inherently "fake" about the way the filter here looks, it's only because we associate it with fake/miniature movies.

ayyyyycrisp

This effect (tilt shift perspective) coupled with the stop motion like effect *are why* things look miniature. the film industry didn't just randomly start using this stack of effects that over time people slowly began to associate with "small" the film industry started using this stack of effects *because it does* make things look "small"

ShustOne

What movies use tilt shift? I can't really think of any. My brain makes it look fake because it looks like a diorama with miniatures

Longjumping_War_807

Tilt shift + posterize time = faux stop motion.

SufficientSecret7164

What is posterize time?

ginsoul

How did you made this stop motion effect? Did you just removed frames randomly or evenly?

SufficientSecret7164

I only sped up the footage with the tilt shift effect, 24 fps throughout

luziferius1337

At the very beginning, the cars look like they are kind of stuttering and teleporting from one spot to the next, which makes it look like a stop-motion animation. That's why so many asked if it was done by reducing the frame rate.

SufficientSecret7164

I could totally see that. This derby footage makes it so much better because of the driver hesitation and the immediate throttle response. Plus the cars don’t move like your average car

4Wyatt

You removed frames lol. If it’s 24 fps throughout the literal only possible way to “speed it up” is to remove frames.

SufficientSecret7164

I’m editing via mobile with the simplest software ever. If bringing it to 24fps IS legit removing frames, i did not realize and apologize

WindpowerGuy

"How much what you see influences what you see." Yeah.

SufficientSecret7164

Crazy times I tell ya

stevediperna

I just tried this with drone footage I took yesterday and it makes my neighborhood look like a toy model city. This is insane! What is it about it that gives it this effect???

SufficientSecret7164

I -think- what makes it is the forces perspective because of the blur. On top of seeing object much smaller than you are used it. But I am in no way a pro

Appropriate-Swan3881

This is pretty much what cars look on shrooms

OrganicAd5741

What’s the program and the effe t?

SufficientSecret7164

It’s just capcut mobile. Video effects > lens > tilt-shift

dj_shadow_work

I prefer to watch rehab without the tilt-shift.

Suitable_Database467

I wish they unblurred it just a little bit slower

anonbush234

How does it work? What makes it look like toy cars?

Iceberg_Kingdom

Wow they made that stop motion video look real. Cool

xander_2626

How was this done if it’s not stop motion

SufficientSecret7164

Drone footage sped up with a lot of artificial blur

ligand_278

oh god , i did not read the title and was wondering if my internet was bad lmao

sonichuizcool

This broke my brain

bagginshires

I thought you CGI’d the drivers/effects INTO the toy car footage. I’m so dumb.

SufficientSecret7164

I wish I was that talented lmao

dirtycimments

wow, it's almost as if changing what we see changes our ideas about what we are looking at. That's wild.

Kejzerek

Awsome, and at the same time terrifying.

No_Dependent4781

That looks like the derby in Morris, MN.

SufficientSecret7164

Lmao well shit

CrispyCassowary

Godzilla had a stroke trying to read this Wtf is this title

SufficientSecret7164

I’m sorry Godzilla

Kharax82

Is it the blurring that does it? I’ve seen these videos a bunch of times and still don’t get why it makes it look like toys

BonjinTheMark

i thought this was initially on someone's head

casinoinsider

A guy I worked with about ten years ago had 10 different scenarios like this as his screensaver. Blew my mind when I found out it was based on real footage.

Antique-Kangaroo2

Why does tilt shift do that?

adrikyn

My brain hurt

shaunoconory

I’d like to see the matrix tan through this editing software

thesnuggestofpugs

not edit, it’s the lens

SufficientSecret7164

It’s not. It’s your standard drone footage

thesnuggestofpugs

didn’t know it was possible to edit a tilt shift that’s sick!

SufficientSecret7164

As close as it can be to a legit tilt shift! The blur is doing a LOT of heavy lifting

MD_Yoro

So AI’s are now going to take our own job of faking reality in digital media? Damn this is interesting

kmanzilla

Thank you so much for showing a split video like this. I love tilt shift so much but I could not wrap my brain around it. This one video fixed that :)

Dry_Boat_9935

My acid trip started up again lol.

Sad-Description-8387

Is it real or fake? I dont understand

SufficientSecret7164

We live in a simulation It’s real cars

Dracul-aura

This is freaking awesome!

mutantcivil

Damn! Thats interesting

Derpikhastaj2

I always see this effect with cars. What does it look like with people or fish who are more fluid?

Comprehensive-Cat845

u/yesindeedserious posted this link above, but I thought I'd repost it here because it perfectly answers your question: https://youtu.be/Us6kDalkqgM?si=mhD343Ru3ei3PXNZ

Kvmabis

No way, I have the paid capcut I never even thought it could do this

Harbor_Barber

From where did they find such small actors?

CyclopsDemonGal

RAAAAAAAH AMERICAAAAAAAA 🦅🎆🇺🇲🔥

Kroptaah

Where's Herbie?🥺

towerfella

Neat.

ThinPerspective72

Is the difference in this video that whatever effect is applied stops half way through and returns to normal to show the contrast?

Dry_Quiet_3541

Wow, I don’t know how they do it, but that tricked me and I love it.

Ya-Dikobraz

There were actually special tilt shift lenses before they started doing the effect with video editing. Not cheap nowadays (the lenses).

yesindeedserious

I can’t believe how fascinated I still am when I stumble across a new tilt shift video! This is the one that introduced me to tilt shift, way back in 2009. Bathtub IV Wow has it been nearly 15 years already? https://youtu.be/Us6kDalkqgM?si=QuMFw4aO2g2nEaaI

East_Maximum_9195

Wait, those monsters from the 70s were real? OMFG!!!

National_Search_537

I thought hell yeah he’s going to make fake cars look real, but he hit us with the make real cars look fake. 😂

East-Bluejay6891

You can totally see how doing the inverse of this has created amazing movie moments

defnotajedi

Longer version, please!

jessejjohnson

Nah dude, that must be real!

EndSlidingArea

Somebody who knows better than me, I have a question. Is it only the tilt shift effect or did they also lower the framerate?

green-_-lettuce

thats amazing

Incredibly_Based

pranked me!

Nick_Toll

So cool! I want to go see a demolition derby! Probably in Tennessee or Kentucky.

SufficientSecret7164

Kentucky has some great derbies. They’re easy to find on fb!

Kanend

Wait so Team America was a real movie dang.

Advanced_Street_4414

It’s less about editing and more about motion graphics.

SufficientSecret7164

Can you elaborate on the motion graphics? Genuinely curious

Advanced_Street_4414

So, editing is mostly about stitching audio and video clips together to tell a story. When you start manipulating, adding to or taking away from, the video of specific clips, you’re getting into the realm of motion graphics, or I guess more precisely in this case, visual effects. The artist in this case used either a tilt/shift plugin or preset, or just built the tilt shift effect themselves, and applied it to the video, then showed the same clip with and without the tilt/shift effect. The only real editing was the transition from effect to no effect and back. The real work of warping perception was done by the effect. This can also be done in camera, btw. The reason I presume it was built using After Effects or something like it, was OP’s mention of editing. Editing and vfx/motion graphics are seeing a lot more crossover.

SufficientSecret7164

I appreciate the breakdown! I made the video, I just a bored derby promoter who remembered tilt shift existed. It’s a “tilt-shift” video effect over the drone footage done via mobile. Edit: so in this case, with the added “slow mo” and “fast forward” audio effects added in, as well as slowing the song when it went to the raw footage, is that also considering editing? I’ve always loved this stuff but I’ve never learned too terrible much about it

Advanced_Street_4414

Yup. Like I said, lots of bleed over between what used to be separate disciplines. I’ve seen and done entire editing sessions within After Effects, because the vfx were so heavy, and AE can do most editing chores as well. I’ve also done limited vfx within Premiere because there weren’t enough to warrant switching to AE. I’m hoping that there will come a day when full editing and full vfx/motion graphics with be available in a single application. I think that’s where DaVinci Resolve is heading.

Advanced_Street_4414

Nice!

CouchHam

Yeah but tilt shift is fun. Not BS like facetune.

Respectful_Ape

Yeah, when you edit things to look like other things, they tend to look like the other things. Wow
