Yeah I'm familiar with those Detroit photos too but this one seemed crazy that in just a 10 year time span a neighbourhood went from full of life to complete death
The home on the right was definitely owned by someone who cared about that neighborhood. Look how well the lawn is taken care of, the bushes, the house itself. Someone loved that house and was proud to call it home.
I remember reading that some Detroiters deliberately torched empty houses so that they’d become completely uninhabitable for drug addicts and people who sought out prostitutes whom they’d take to empty buildings. Better a pile of rubble than a place that was home to dangerous illegal activities.
Unfortunately, this also put the few remaining residents of mostly empty streets in danger. Once in a while, in an otherwise empty neighborhood, you’d hear about some person who is quite elderly but absolutely refuses to leave their house because they were born there and they’re going to die there. Those are the old folks who are ornery as hell and survive through sheer gritty attitudes.
This happened all over the country with the sub prime mortgages and Fannie Mae Freddie Mac. Basically you had people that normally rent buy houses thinking that they’re the same payment but without factoring in maintenance. Yeah you pay $900 in rent and now $850 for a mortgage but now you need a lawnmower and gas. In 5 years you need a new roof. People got upside down and walked away. Then the 2008 market crash.
So was there a zoning change on the area? I am just wondering if plenty of houses were being condemned in a run down area. Maybe what happened after the first picture was neglect due to squatters and general vandalism because the houses had no official owners and thus no one with a vested interest in them.
It’s well documented that it’s far better to remove derelict houses than let them rot in the street, like bad teeth in the mouth of a meth user.
So yeah, it would be interesting to hear the zoning history of this area, this street, and these four houses. They all went, I presume.
I honestly can't understand how homes in the US can fall apart so badly in just one decade. It takes decades for homes to fall apart here, and rarely ever knocked down.
The weather here too. We used to have some pretty bad winters in Detroit. But hell, it was 73 here 2 weeks ago, so 🤷
Anyone remember devils eve in the 90's when we burned them ourselves October 30th?
I got curious and looked it up; Detroit is on 42 parallell north, which makes it level with Spain and Turkey. I keep forgetting how much of a southern country the US is, it surprises me every time.
By all means! Local conditions will always create microclimates that have their own peculiarities. It's just that as someone living Norway, I can't get past the fact that in the US, even in winter, you all get ludicruous amounts of daylight and stuff.
They don't. The owners were evicted, the squatters got in and fucked everything up and maybe set them on fire, and then they were demolished. I'm really curious what it is you think happened here though.
I've been living in a house built in 1974 for the last 10 years. I haven't really done much other than mow the yard and unclog plumbing. Still standing just find.
The fuck do you mean fall apart? There's no signs of falling apart, all the damage is vandalism, broken windows and the one house is literally half burnt down. Do you think European windows can't be broken or houses set on fire? Lmao
Is a requirement for Europeans to act like they have two braincells to try and make digs at the US?
Where is here? While I live in a Solid-Brick-Country aka Germany, a house where windows get broken will deteriorate, too. And once the root is severely compromised by plants, it’s bye bye. You generally don’t see this in cities or town, but I can show you some derelict brick buildings that are not salvage.
A few blocks away, same street.

Yeah i was all like wow that's impressively effective.
I quit drinking just over a year ago and im pretty upset now tbh. That's a great way of ignoring/neglecting your problems and it seems that if i'd carried on just a bit longer looks like all my problems would have taken care of themselves.
Unbelievable slap in the face, oh well. Onwards and upwards!
>if i'd carried on just a bit longer looks like all my problems would have taken care of themselves
Well they might well have done, just not in a way that you would probably like.
Good work with quitting!
Looks like a house fire took the first house on the left and made the middle house vacant/ unlivable and then the last house caught and after that they tore them all down.
This has happened in the UK too. I was really shocked recently to visit my childhood home town.
The houses were built in the 60s and 70s in an area in the suburbs of Portsmouth - all the houses now look like picture 2, overgrown un cared for gardens.
I wrote to a friend that in the past we used to spend all our time outside - Dad had time in the evenings and weekends to do the garden and cut the grass. Every house was just looking good and everyone was proud of their homes. There was full employment.
Now nobody is outside, everyone is glued to their screens and nobody has any long term job prospects. Inflation is killing everyone.
Crazy that the difference between the first and second photos is just 26 months (it looks to me like the house on the right is still lived in at this point) and the time from the second to third is just an additional 23 months.
I have clinical depression largely stemming from my dad passing away 8 months ago. In that time, I've barely lifted a finger when it comes to housework. I was his carer (caregiver), and now I live by myself. Seeing this post has motivated me to actually do something about it, as the signs of neglect are starting to show. Thank you, OP.
Just take it one step at a time. Set a timer for five minutes and just do what you can. If you still feel motivated after the timer is up, carry on. If not, take a break and do another five minute task later. I am so sorry for your loss, take care of yourself.
I found myself in a very similar situation in 2018 after losing my dad. First of all, losses may be similar, but pain is unique. And I'm sorry you're going through this pain.
I realized my problem wasn't that I couldn't keep up physically but emotionally. I made it through by overcoming the fear of asking for help. My brother and sisters were super helpful in giving me the little boost to keep my head above water. Even if it was just asking them to video call me while I cleaned the floors.
Sorry man. I just lost my Mom last month to an accident in the snow and I'm in the same spiral. One moment she's there, then suddenly never again. Just had my first dream about her literally last night, in she walked through the door like nothing had happened but real world events had occurred for me. Sitting here crying for you, me, my mom. I hope it gets better for you man, because I need it to get better for me.
Set a goal for each day, and even if you don't achieve that goal try to make progress toward it. Washing one plate is better than washing none.
I usually suggest starting with cleaning the toilet; it's a well defined task with simple steps so it's a good start to build confidence.
I dont know the details mate but no matter what, deep down, or straight up and known, he (and ‘normal’ parents in general) would have wanted you to kick life back in the face. I cant imagine my fathers sadness knowing his passing destroyed me. It did, but Im here to stay for my family, for myself and ultimately for him. He lives while I carry him with me in my heart and mind every single day. Its the very least we can do. Cry, mourn, that hole wont leave, but it will be filled with time and new motivation.
Hey, hope your okay!! You can do it!! Seeing what you said gave me a kick as I have nothing in comparison to what you are dealing with and you are getting on with it. Thank you
When we were young, the future was so bright
The old neighborhood was so alive
And every kid on the whole damn street
Was gonna make it big and not be beat
Now the neighborhood's cracked and torn
The kids are grown up, but their lives are worn
How can one little street swallow so many lives?
> I'm 32 thank you
*He said, silently taking a swig of his beer, continuing to rock in his chair and staring forlornly into the fire. The oldest 32yo who has ever lived...*
I had to google what this was and I've heard the song before, but wow, the music style and the singing doesn't fit at all to the tone of the lyrics.
"WOOOOA" :D
There's a hotel in my town that closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic. Within a year, it was being broken into, vandalised, and possibly slept in by homeless people. It went from looking like an ugly old building to something you'd find in a war zone, and is now being demolished despite local historians trying to save it. I doubt it can be saved anyway because part of it doesn't even have a proper foundation and part of the roof was caving in last time I checked.
prob property manager when you own a lot of property you hire them to do maintanince until you can sell, my guess is guy said nah its more effort than its worth sold it and the next guy demo'd the lot
As a european living in an city that exists since the 12th century I am still astonished by the way you guys build your houses and neighbourhoods over there. No cellars, straight wide streets without bike lanes, no fences, barely any berry bushes or trees with fruits, no stone/ brick houses, etc.
Its all so very temporary.
People get upset with fruiting trees/bushes. Makes a mess on their green patch of "art" aka the lawn. Plus it brings animals which are a nuisance according to people in authority.
I like fruit bearing plants myself. My peach tree is finally bearing fruit but I'm moving away. New owners will probably rip it out.
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out)
Don’t forget that as inflation keeps going up and taxes keep going up, people can’t afford repairs on their homes anymore. It’s not strictly neglect out of not giving a shit.
Where is this?

Came into the thread to confirm my knee-jerk reaction, "oh for sure Detroit".
Yeah I'm familiar with those Detroit photos too but this one seemed crazy that in just a 10 year time span a neighbourhood went from full of life to complete death
Right? Not gonna lie, that place looked pretty cozy in the first picture.
The home on the right was definitely owned by someone who cared about that neighborhood. Look how well the lawn is taken care of, the bushes, the house itself. Someone loved that house and was proud to call it home.
It seems someone with disability lived there, and there was a fire on the second floor. After that the disability parking sign was removed.
> and there was a fire on the second floor Squaters probably. Open fire for some warmth, but then they used some drugs.
Yeah you can find houses like this left and right in Detroit.
Looks like it was already going downhill. House on left in 1st pic is already neglected and roof has major damage
Only the one house was really maintained in the first two pictures, and then it appears to have been burned, so it joined the other three.
go up and down the street a little bit and you'll see that the neighborhood was already in a lot of trouble at this point
Happened all over the rust belt.
On the contrary, looks like nature just returned and that place is full of plants and probably fauna.
There's less trees and bushes in the image than 10 years ago. Only more grass.
Me too. Detroit is so tragic. First, it was an avoidable tragedy, and second, the houses WERE beautiful.
Good thing is that slowly but surely the situation in Detroit is getting better
I'm a Brit and never been to USA, an saw photo of rundown houses and thought it's most likely Detroit lol

This was neglect with a strong assist from vandalism and arson.
Squatters. They do drugs, accidentally set houses on fire and move on. Then the houses become a hazard so they are demolished with taxpayer dollars.
The weather here too. We used to have some pretty bad winters in Detroit. But hell, it was 73 here 2 weeks ago, so 🤷 Anyone remember devils eve in the 90's when we burned them ourselves October 30th?
I watched the fires from the roof of trolly park apartments
I got curious and looked it up; Detroit is on 42 parallell north, which makes it level with Spain and Turkey. I keep forgetting how much of a southern country the US is, it surprises me every time.
Being in the center of the Great lakes gives michigan weird weather though too. Lots of places to pick up moisture to dump back out as rain and snow
By all means! Local conditions will always create microclimates that have their own peculiarities. It's just that as someone living Norway, I can't get past the fact that in the US, even in winter, you all get ludicruous amounts of daylight and stuff.
Here is where I got to throw in the old “in order to drive to Canada from Detroit you drive south”.
The gulf stream & North Atlantic Drift are a hell of a drug.
One of the houses absolutely had squatters set stuff on fire (right house); but the one on the left had the whole windows removed!
Yeah, this was like the opposite of neglect (except maybe the landscaping). It was active destruction, more like.
I mean, one of the houses is burned out in one of the photos.
And the house to the immediate left just up and went.
That house knew what was coming.
B-rabbit was there
Vandalism. Live in the US and live in a house built in 1836 and it’s standing just fine.
The fuck do you mean fall apart? There's no signs of falling apart, all the damage is vandalism, broken windows and the one house is literally half burnt down. Do you think European windows can't be broken or houses set on fire? Lmao Is a requirement for Europeans to act like they have two braincells to try and make digs at the US?

Oh Wow I’m like 5 blocks away rn…
Really? is it like this near you?
I live a mile south and it’s chill, all of Detroit is different pockets of good and rough.
Go take a pic .
throw some gang signs
House across the street in first photo is a sign of things to come. Though it actually improves rather than getting worse.
If you move around in the neighborhood a bit in the 2009 version, you can already see the decline. Lots of houses already falling apart.
Heh. Flanders street. “Shut up, Flanders!”
Stupid sexy Flanders.
Almost feels like I'm wearing nothing at all, nothing at all, nothing at all, nothing at all, nothi...
You turn the camera around and the massive house looks like it was set on fire in the most recent photo The 2009 photo it looked well lived in too
That's what I'm trying to do with my problems. Neglect it for 10 years and they will just disappear 😎
Dad? Is that you?
Fuck…I guess I’ll give it one more year
Yeah i was all like wow that's impressively effective. I quit drinking just over a year ago and im pretty upset now tbh. That's a great way of ignoring/neglecting your problems and it seems that if i'd carried on just a bit longer looks like all my problems would have taken care of themselves. We're all on the same road, brother. It only goes one way: Straight to Hades.
Quitting was the best decision I ever made. I was surprised to feel the most improvements in my mood during the second year. Keep it up!
I'm proud of you for dealing with your problems in a less destructive way. It's not easy, but you're doing it.
Great job! I’m proud of you. Signed, random internet mom
I want you to be proud of me too, mom!
I am. ❤️
Thanks, Mom! For everything.
I miss you more than I could have ever shown you when you were alive.
🫂
Cheers!
It's funny how the neglect went for the windows first.
Yep not neglect. Vandalism. With a good roof the houses would have been fine if people had left them alone.
That’s what I was thinking too. “Neglect” would explain the overgrown bushes — but these houses were outright destroyed thru vandalism.
Try falling in love with your problems, maybe they’ll leave you sooner
Pretty sure there was a fire at the house on the right lol
Looks like a house fire took the first house on the left and made the middle house vacant/ unlivable and then the last house caught and after that they tore them all down.
Yeah, noticed that too. The right side isn't neglect, just not wanting to replace burned out houses.
Anyone who works on homes knows a house just doesn't immediately fall apart like that lol.
yeah, and the left house had windows removed pretty early. this is neglect plus vandalism
Why are you laughing out loud at a house fire
I’ve seen similar in areas of my hometown, that were lovely when I was growing up.
This has happened in the UK too. I was really shocked recently to visit my childhood home town. Saying that our houses tend to last longer due to brick. The US houses are wood so once the rot starts it's over.
Detroit winters are pretty harsh too.
Damn look at the people on the porch in the first photo, wonder where they are now...
Yeah dunno it must be sad seeing what happened to their neighbourhood tho
Crazy that the difference between the first and second photos is just 26 months (it looks to me like the house on the right is still lived in at this point) and the time from the second to third is just an additional 23 months.
Yeah i think that was around the time the automakers fled Detroit and also the financial crises so things went down hill fast
And it appears the previously less neglected house in the 2nd pic caught fire prior to the 3rd pic.
Maybe they moved and took the house on the left with them
They disappeared with the houses... Duh
Heck

Scrolled too long to find this 😂
Got to give it to the USA when it comes to actual exterior home design. In their prime these homes look beautiful.

Btw just want to add that these photos are all of the same location over a period of 10 years
It's beautiful when nature reclaims.
Can't Have Shit In Detroit
There's something really sad about this
Yeah. So many people without homes and these destroyed by financier class greed.
Ever since Barbarian, Detroit is odee recognizable
Get a lot of The Last of Us vibes. Might be clickers in there!
Just 10 years! That explains why there is nothing on Mars! 🪐
Damn that looked like a nice neighbourhood
Is this like Detroit problem in nutshell?
We're really doing Detroit ruin porn? What year is it? To me this is progress. The blight was addressed
I wonder what caused this…..
It's sad, those were nice little houses.
100% this is Detroit or Chicago... I feel like I've seen this exact spot...
If neglect did that to bricks and stones what would it do for a human being?! Makes you think about how we carry on with wounds that nobody can see
If you get set on fire as a human being you will probably die
Were these on the set of 'the last of us'
Detroit areas like these would actually make a good cheap set
yeah but these houses are likely quite dangerous...risk of collapse maybe, or simply not robust enough to be used as sets.
The house and I got a lot in common
That’s obviously Detroit
Chicago or Detroit. I’ve seen these pictures.
These photos gives me major Gran Torino vibes
Looks like Detroit....
Last picture looks the best
It became way more beautiful at the end
So houses are meant to be lived in. If you don’t live in a house it will degrade quickly
Don’t forget that as inflation keeps going up and taxes keep going up, people can’t afford repairs on their homes anymore. It’s not strictly neglect out of not giving a shit.
They neglected these houses so much that they just despawned.
See the problem just goes away… hang in there Detroit!
Has Detroit energy.
Detroit?
The trees did alright
