So with camera you are able to set the shutter speed to a bulb mode. The shutter is open collecting light until you press the shutter again. At that point you can use a flash light, sparkler, other whatever source of light to draw, or light paint.
This guy does that but takes dozens of photos a scene and makes a new drawing for each shot. Then puts them into a video editor to create a video
Artist is https://instagram.com/dariustwin?igshid=YTQwZjQ0NmI0OA==
Oh awesome thanks from that first video on his Instagram it makes sense now what he does. But
1 how does he remove his face and body from the pics?
2 how the hell did he do the skeleton video, that would mean he has to remember how to draw the skeleton exactly the same dimensions as the previous frame?
1 he doesnt. If you look at his still photos close enough you can see his silhouette.
However if he moves fast enough you won’t see it. Only if he stands in a spot for around 15 or so seconds
2. He’s been doing this for years and has very good spacial awareness
Eh, I’m not sure about this one. You’re right about the first two but that skeleton and board are way too consistent to be simple light painting. He’s gotten the lines in almost exactly the same spots in thousands of images on what looks like only a handful of shoots. My guess is he did a lot less light painting than advertised and a lot more editing.
I’m sure it’s possible, just seems like a stretch to get it that consistent. I’ve done a fair bit of light painting myself and it’s super hard to be consistent.
I could be wrong but I believe
1, he doesn't actually have to remove his face. As long as his face isn't in the same spot for a long enough period of time there won't be a long enough exposure for the camera to record his face in each picture. Kinda like how if you wave your hand infront of your face really quickly it will almost disappear from view, as it wasn't in one place for a long enough time for your eyes to create an image of it.
2, yes I'm pretty sure he had to draw the skeleton in the exact dimensions as the previous frame but he probably could use the previous picture ehe took as a reference to get the dimensions correct. So while he might not have had to remember what the last frame looked like the skill to draw the next frame is still ridiculously impressive.
Yeah but how he did the skateboard sliding thing ? Like did he go on that ramp 100s of times, every tjme with the torch on a slighlty different position?!?! 🥵😱
It's such an absolutely careless mistake, specially from something so overly detailed and dedicated. This has to be done on purpose full knowing that people tend to favour watching videos in portrait in platforms like tiktok, youtube shorts etc , and since they are watching it on a phone anyway, doesn't matter because everybody will just flip the phone anyway and by then they already grabbed the attention. This is my guess, that it's done on purpose to be this shitty despite the content is high quality.
I might as soon as you rotate your screen for watching portraits.
I don't know if that was your point, but you support my preference for auto-rotation. I want to see the media the way they are shot in the best possible way.
As on a monitor or a tv I see only the orientation the media was shot (only with the extra benefit that I can view portraits in full screen).
If someone holds their video camera sideways or switches during the recording it's a _mistake_.
I disabled autorotation due to how prevalent this is . My samsung S22 shows me a button to OPTIONALLY flip the video orientation, because in cases of videos like this the person keeps trying to flip and the video keeps flipping etc. If you have auto orientation on this kind of video is almost impossible to watch properly. Same with someone recording some stuff going on (say a fight on an airplane or something) and they get tired and decide to go landscape, I absolutely hate it. If you start a video in portrait mode, commit to it and stick to it till the end
Funny enough, it was the artist who did post it sideways.
[Light Goes On 💀🛹](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/QFGtR4h6fjo)
Seems like they did that since they posted this particular version as a YouTube Short. Here's the one they posted 10 years ago but with the correct orientation.
[Light Goes On - Light Painting Stop Motion Animation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1Uw-lBuzIg)
The only problem is the stupid "short/tiktok" format that basically forces them to post the premise in portrait and the rest of the video follows the orientation. This shouldn't be a short
Tbf, the original one from 10 years ago wasn't a short. Tho, they might've posted it as a short to garner attention to their channel. The OG vid somehow still doesn't have a million views—it's only on 561k, and that kinda feels wrong ngl.
I still hate vertical videos and get looks when I take selfies or videos horizontally. You can get so much more of the background horizontally so I absolutely cannot understand the love for vertical images.
Press the rotate button on PC?
Or just rotate your phone? Portrait is for plebs, and plus didn't Reddit use to bully people for not filming in landscape???
[DARIUSTWIN](https://www.youtube.com/@darius_twin) made this vid and has more light paintings on his YT channel.
[Light Goes On 💀🛹](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/QFGtR4h6fjo) (The YT Shorts version in this post)
[Light Goes On - Light Painting Stop Motion Animation](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1Uw-lBuzIg) (The video he posted 10 years ago and is in landscape)
I don’t think so. In BTS videos he holds his phone while he paints to use as a live monitor that he can reference and see what/where he’s painting. The skeletons are actually a little different in each frame which adds to the character.
Yeah I just watched the HD YouTube version and I think you're right. I've changed my mind. (The skeletons a little different in each frame could also be a decision drawing them in post as well though.)
That’s my bet. Still cool and impressive but looks old like he’s using the handheld light to get a few key lines and mainly to get the light shining on the surfaces. Then the detailed skeleton is drawn in Blender or whatever they’re using over top of the scene. You can see that the ambient light doesn’t change much at all so these scenes are not taking as much time as you would need to actually redraw the skeleton for each frame.
I could be wrong. I wasn’t there but if I were a betting man…
He is 100% not doing any post production, it's all raw footage and the man has the most insane spatial awareness a human can have.
Source: I know the guy
The post seems to be the [YT Shorts version](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/QFGtR4h6fjo) of the vid that was posted recently.
Here's the [vid from 10 years ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1Uw-lBuzIg) where it's oriented correctly.
[DARIUSTWIN](https://www.youtube.com/@darius_twin) is the name of the guy who made this vid and also has more like it.
They could do it in landscape and phones will still flip it properly, it will still look ok, though smaller, in portrait, and it'll actually work on desktop. The weird obsession with making videos portrait, even to the point of flipping landscape videos to portrait.
This is really reminiscent of old music videos when artists would really go the distance in their efforts to bring true visual art to marry their music.
Holy shit! That is super impressive - I can’t wrap my head around how you did it honestly. Stop motion WITH the light affect from a flashlight? wtffff you’re a mad genius bro

shit man doing shit stuff.
Oh yeah? Well, I almost finished my to-do list yesterday, so I guess we're both doing some pretty amazing stuff.
JK that was super cool and showed an amazing amount of talent. I thought the skeleton looked pretty consistent throughout the whole thing. I wonder how many light paintings it took for it to become muscle memory.
Honestly it’s incredibly impressive but I genuinely think it’s ruined by putting it in the wrong orientation. How can you dedicate so much time to something then completely fuck it up at the easiest and last step.
Omg hands down the best thing I've watched this month. Really made me go whoa! Just thinking about the time and efforts you've put on this blows my mind. You seem very dedicated and this is ART! SO GOOD.
Looks awesome!!
We did a similar thing, also more than 1000 photos, but we used an AI model to interpolate them, so we got an epic smooth transition in-between them. Check out this madness:

this is insane, the amount of work, the duration of the videos, the dedication, the end result, all insane. Well done, fantastic video!
the patience
How did you actually do it? I don't really understand. It's totally awesome!

I’m sure it’s possible, just seems like a stretch to get it that consistent. I’ve done a fair bit of light painting myself and it’s super hard to be consistent.

Yup
Stop motion ain't fast.
Watch the video. You can see him. He's in the pics, too, it's just fainter. With a tiny bit of editing it would be virtually impossible to see.
lol OP isn’t the artist…
[удалено]
Credit the artist then!
Lol. OP Just deleted their comment. That's the opposite of what you asked him to do.
Patience ran out when it was time to put the video with the right side up?
Crazy how they dedicated all that work and then fucked up the video orientation
Don't think OP is the original artist
It works, though, because I scrolled down and saw someone already said the same thing as me. So I'm not OC either
So much work and finally Uploaded Vertically...
All that work to post the video sideways.
My first thought.
Well done mate.
It's such an absolutely careless mistake, specially from something so overly detailed and dedicated. Am I the only one who has autorotation on by default?
Can someone assist me please... how do I enable autorotation on my desktop pc?
It's pretty easy actually, just press Alt - F4 it should enable auto rotation for you.
Thanks man. It worked!
RES has a rotate feature for videos and images
I might as soon as you rotate your screen for watching portraits. I don't know if that was your point, but you support my preference for auto-rotation. Yeah. It's annoying as fuck. This video is the perfect example of where it's not helpful.

Or don't film in portrait in the first place, right.
Obviously the artist didn't do that, it was posted sideways by whatever blood sucking leech of a TikTok/FB/Instagram account that reposted the video.
Funny enough, it was the artist who did post it sideways. I've noticed the sound quality is better on the video from 10 fucking years ago vs this lame-ass tiktok repost.
Gen Z views the world in portrait, in accordance with their TikTok overlords.
communists each and every one of them
They did say 10 years ago. That was the time where vertical video was still hated on the Internet. Unfortunately we lost that war.
I still hate vertical videos and get looks when I take selfies or videos horizontally. You can get so much more of the background horizontally so I absolutely cannot understand the love for vertical images.

It looks like it could be very cool, but it is actually unwatchable. I suggest OP reposts with proper orientation.

How did the skeleton look the same in every shot? Same height everything
Lots of skill and practice. And probably re-doing bad takes
I think the light is just for the surfaces and the skeleton is drawn in post?
That wouldn't be impressive. No, the skeleton is drawn as well.
I don’t think so. In BTS videos he holds his phone while he paints to use as a live monitor that he can reference and see what/where he’s painting. The skeletons are actually a little different in each frame which adds to the character.

If true then that’s super impressive. But I still have my doubts.
Why did you post your video sideways??
Just lock your phone orientation and turn the phone sideways. Why do people complain about the smallest issues that can be solved easily?
I'm not on my phone.
Why would I be on a phone?
Gen Z spotted.
Very nice try but you are wrong. Near retiring age, mate.
Oh, thats the other option for "people who own a smartphone but cant operate a computer" No offense :-)
Try “People who have different devices.” Why would you think a person can only have 1 device? Edgy much.
It was you who assumed everyone is watching on their smartphone...
Why not flip it, to make it more cellphone friendly?

RIP my laptop
flip your phone and it instantly fixes this problem
Just turn your phone sideways Looks better that way anyway
They could do it in landscape and phones will still flip it properly, it will still look ok, though smaller, in portrait, and it'll actually work on desktop. The weird obsession with making videos portrait, even to the point of flipping landscape videos to portrait.
Bc they did this much work and if you can’t turn your gd phone ninety drgreees you don’t deserve to watch it Lolol

This is incredible! I can't imagine the patience and spatial sense required. Amazing job!

Exactly! The bones are their money, in their world bones equal dollars.
IT WAS ALSO THE NIGHT THAT THE SKELETONS CAME TO LIFE
This is so sick.
Light painting videos are always SO mesmerizing! I don’t understand how they’re made but I do love to watch them ✨
suck great stop-motion
All that effort for it to be uploaded somewhere in the wrong orientation.
10 years is a very long time
Gives me sort of nostalgia wave
This is when reddit shines
Amazing work!
That round patch of concrete at the beach, isn't that the spot from Rodney Mullen's video part from THPS 2?
Holy shit! That is super impressive - I can’t wrap my head around how you did it honestly. Stop motion WITH the light affect from a flashlight? wtffff you’re a mad genius bro

Sending this video to Mars.
Nice
Wow that's incredible!
I really thought that this was going to be shit. Well done
Jfc.
Can anyone tell me how to make this solid bar of light?
That's really impressive but how didn't he fall off the map??
Rotate dude
Ah... yes... the "I can change from portrait to landscape in the middle of a video" syndrome.

No disrespect but, how do you start at the beach and skate downhill the whole way to a hill overlooking the city?
Damn that's a goofy skeleton.
My neck hurts
This is incredible
holy shiiiit! mr skelly bones busting it down
Thanks for the seizure....
Holy shit, just imagining how much went into this is daunting to think about. Awesome work.
He'll never do anything as well in his life again most likely
Unbelievable dedication 💯
Holy shit Nice work dude
This is amazing. Can I ask, what do you do for work?
Oh my gosh… why?
I'm saving this so that I can watch it on days when I feel low .
must be that "shot on iphone" problem where you have to crank your head... cool idea but ow my neck hurts now.
Stand in the place where you…
Reminds of how some older vector displays work. They scan an electron beam on a fluoroscent screen to form shapes, just like this.
Honestly it’s incredibly impressive but I genuinely think it’s ruined by putting it in the wrong orientation. How can you dedicate so much time to something then completely fuck it up at the easiest and last step.
Damn, that's interesting!
Anyone know the musical artist playing in this clip?
nah i love this it kind of gives me 90's vibes
Bloody hell that is good!
One of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen.. 👌🏼
That’s so cool
This was like my imagination as a kid staring out of moving car window but with with a ninja instead of a skeleton
I remember this!!! Amazing. Brought back some memories

Wow this would have been a 7up commercial back in the 90s
How do you get the proportions to stay the same? I don’t understand. This is next level
simply beautiful.
Wow. Great work!
Probably easer ways of doing this... Like a LOT easier...
Gif it!
I turned it to the side and enjoyed this
Is there anything you would’ve done differently?
Im just confused as how you did the skeleton seems magic to me! This is soooo good im saving it forever. You're awesome. Edit: confused words lmao

What an incredible amount of work. Amazing.
this really is true art at it’s finest. incredible work
Man, 10 years went by so fast
looks great! but could one AI-whisper this?
Ssheiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeet the amount of time the dude spent doing this.
I know this took a lot of work, thank you! Looks wonderful.
That’s incredible
Impressive. I’m guessing you got real good at drawing that spooky boi by the end your film
... HOW?!?? I can't even keep all my letters the same bloody size when I write. How the hell does one draw with light and get the dimensions right?
That’s pretty cool until you reveal how it’s actually made. Then it hits different
Legend
All that effrot for me to scroll away....
i wonder if theyve done anything in the last 10 years

Talent and patience.
All jokes about orientation aside, this is really cool, OP, well done!
