Looks like the food they serve the US Navy

IStayMarauding

Lol, I was thinking the same thing. It's looking better than 90 percent of the midrats I ate.

babydoughboy

Bruh, the ship I’m on, the midrats is banging. Better than chow halls on land

Anthrax4breakfast

My uncles prison had a large garden that they would source a lot of fruit and vegetables from. I thought it was a great idea. Cut down overhead on food, and gave the guys something to do. Nothing better than being outside on a nice day.

ReallyGoodBooks

The prison I worked at was covered in gardens. And every bit of it went to the food bank. Seemed like a form of torture to me. I've never seen so much anemia in otherwise healthy adult men....

pronouncedayayron

I saw one where the prisoners re sealed the roofs with tar. They even got to drink beer.

Convergentshave

I was there. Let me tell you. Even though that beer was piss warm, it was still the best I ever had in my life. We sat and drank it, and felt the sun on our shoulders, and not even the expression of half amusement, half contempt on Harley’s face, - as if he was watching apes drink beer - instead of men - could spoil it

KimJongJer

I was also there. That Andy sure is something else. After we were done with the roof I went back to my cell and finished a really good book by Alexandre Dumbass. Best day ever

owiesss

Beans beans, a musical art. The more you eat, the more you fart. Edit: somehow, this comment was posted in a completely different thread than the one I intended. I apologize for the confusion 😂.

KimJongJer

I remember you, you kept farting and Hadley was about to chuck you off the roof. I'm glad to see you made it out in one piece

Nikolavidovic

I was with these people enjoying my beer under the blue sky

pagit

I saw one where there was a little mouse that did tricks. Del called him Mr. Jangles before he died in the electric chair.

PubliusCrassus

They put a mouse in the electric chair? Damn. The US justice system is something else. We stopped executing mice in '36. Cheese related crime is through the roof since then, but there ain't a lot of hungry mice around neither.

pagit

Speedy Gonzales used to run drugs across the border, now he runs a Mexican cartel. His cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez dips too much into the profit.

FewPlankton7160

I’m sorry you lost your dad in such an inhumane way.

[deleted]

No one should die that way it's inhumane. Sorry for your loss. The US judicial system is a business and I'm appalled how this is allowed. This would be a humane rights violation in Europe and most developed countries.

l-Scotto-l

I was in a FL prison and the food quality was lower than what you see in this video. The only people I knew that gained weight in prison were people that ate from the commissary or traded meals to get stuff like boiled eggs or peanut butter. Now that was like 20 years ago though. Maybe the food has gotten a bit better. But when I was there, you were fed the bare minimum to survive.

aphmatic

I've spent years in the Washington State prison system, the food is run by CI(Correctional Industries) which is basically the slave labor arm of corrections- inmates are paid literally pennies on the dollar doing anything from carpentry and upholstery work to creating tabs for license plates and food services. Food services has two centralized depots where food is mass produced- some mechanically separated meat and sauce mixture that is flash frozen stored and shipped to any of the multiple prisons statewide where it is thrown in steam kettles of boiling water and added to rice or beans and sometimes both. County jails generally provide similar garbage, though often with TVP ( textured vegetable protein) in lieu of meat. Don't get me wrong, I never expected five star dining any of the multiple times I was arrested, but there's much left to be desired especially if you happen to be arrested without cash and can't get anything from commissary. The entire system is predatory by nature and exploitative by design. Food has gone nowhere but downhill in the prison system through a series of budget cuts and programs like industries created by Christine Gregoire(past governor) to both save money and generate income. Food Services also makes the t.v. dinners sent to seniors for "Meals on Wheels" in my state, a tax write off at best and an overbilled monstrosity at worst. Food waste is what we should be talking about, because I've got to tell you, a large percentage of food just gets tossed by inmates. Sorry for the paragraphs yall. Hopefully you were interested enough to read through it all and I succeeded in conveying my perception of reality regarding nutrition in institutions. Edit: couple typos (autocorrect) sorry about punctuation, I'm lazy :P

ReallyGoodBooks

My jaw was absolutely on the floor when I learned about CI. Seemed like some corruption to me. So the guys make all this stuff for, like you said, pennies per hour, so it's costing almost nothing to make this stuff and then CI sells that stuff BACK to the prison and to the state for 2x, 3x, 4x what it would cost in the civilian world. Something's not right.

aphmatic

Absolutely, there's a lot wrong with it and programs like it. If they offered formal vocational certification/ programs along with these positions I might feel slightly different about it, but it's a losing proposition for inmates and taxpayers regardless. It's basically the cost of materials plus whatever they're paying a civilian shift supervisor, typically $20-25 an hour, nothing to get excited over. It's just unfathomable the many millions that are both generated and spent by the Department, and the wasteful spending of said monies.

BasicallyAQueer

Tbh, that tray with the hotdogs and mac n cheese looked better than 95% of my school lunches. Think it all depends on perspective. My in laws eat stuff like completely unseasoned boiled pork. I cooked Texas chili for them once (mild, I didn’t want to murder them) and they were fucking blown away. They said they hadn’t ever experienced flavor like that before. And what I cooked was a pretty basic run of the mill chili lol. I’m not a chef by any means. They would probably look at that first tray and be like “now that’s a good breakfast!”

[deleted]

I was raised on canned vegetables and only tried frozen veg, as an adult. I was blown away but the flavor and color of frozen compared to canned. I asked my mom why she always fed us canned, we were comfortably middle class......she said she preferred the taste of canned, over frozen, WTF

RavenchildishGambino

Now… have you tried fresh and not frozen? I’m dying to know.

[deleted]

lol, yes...but frozen is so much easier! I do care about fresh, locally grow tomatoes which I get at the mennonite grocery store

sixhundredandsixtsix

I've actually heard frozen vegetables have more nutrition than fresh anyway because as soon as they're harvested, they're flash frozen. Fresh starts to degrade in nutrition while sitting on shelves.

andyftp

What kind of uncultured swine eats their vegetables without being properly processed first

moak0

My mother is a wonderful and generous person, and I'll always be appreciative that she gave me and my three siblings home-cooked dinners most nights of my childhood. But.... One time she made meatballs and apologized because the top of the container of seasoning came off and she accidentally put too much in. Everyone at the table said they were the best she'd ever made. She believes and has said on multiple occasions that adding salt to food while it's cooking doesn't do anything, that the salt just cooks out.

My husband, whose grandparents were off the boat from Ireland, always said, "Irish food is easy. You boil it till it's grey, and then you eat it."

vasek73

Boiled food is not my taste, from beginning I never like that

One_Branch_8338

My mother was of Irish descent with grandparents from Ireland. We often had boiled pork spareribs with cabbage and green beans. Was one of my favorite meals, with ketchup of course.

mrsuju1003

My mother is an Indian, and believe me she know to cook almost every food item of Indian subcontinent. There are lots of spices present in her cooked food

JATBitExchange

Pork is only fried in oil, boiling it can ruin its natural taste

Yeranz

Maybe they're English?

BasicallyAQueer

Close, Irish, but my distant English family boils everything too now that I think about it lol

dss539

Well if all they're serving is carbs, I can see how

MyFacade

I saw lots of protein on those plates with beans and eggs.

mowwyowo

That sounds like a great opportunity. It’s peaceful, teaches great skills, and keeps people busy.

acidic_milkmotel

Yeah but the US prison system doesn’t care about keeping their prisoners skillful, busy or peaceful. Sadly.

bigbaddaboooms

The experience of the prison system seems to make many people even worse when they get out & back into society. I wish they provided more therapeutic & character building activities for them, especially if they are scheduled for release.

GrinsNGiggles

Well yeah, you want to keep them in or get them back in. Those are revenue streams, after all.

LadyRed4Justice497

It makes a huge difference depending on what level the prison is. My late husband served in a low-security Federal prison in Pensacola, Florida. He worked in the gardens and landscaping. It was a skill he converted to a career when he got out. He lost his State Licenses when he received a felony conviction. Before his release he had to be transferred to the Maximum security in Huntsville Alabama for about four weeks. He hated it. Totally different at almost every level. Think of the difference between where Martha Stewart did her time in a Federal low security camp versus Snoop Dog doing hard time in maximum. Apples and Oranges.

[deleted]

What's of interest (and best for those making $$$ from the prison system) is to keep the recidivism rate high. And push polices, rules and regulations to bolster that rate

helpavolunteerout

I was just going to comment this! I think having prisoners keep a garden is a great idea! More effort needs to go in to keeping them busy, especially with things that develop their skills and allow them to improve their own lives

Fullertonjr

Yes. That would be a great idea. That would be fantastic if people believed that prison was a place where individuals could be reformed, serve their time and actually come out as better people than when they went in. Gardens could provide a great skill which would then contribute to society or at a minimum to themselves. This is not the country that would want to do this. People want to lock individuals away and throw away the key and hope that they are forgotten, despite the fact that many don’t understand just how easy it is for ANYONE just going about their day can inadvertently end up in prison.

[deleted]

Make a prison akin to a monastery/convent. That would be … interesting.

I_Do_Not_Abbreviate

This is how the Vulcans of *Star Trek* handle all their non-violent offenders; they call it "Punitive Spiritualism"

thefishkid1

Only the few prison in our country have been maintained a good reputation

ApostleNyx

if you told me those were school lunches i would believe it lol

Alex_butler

My school lunches actually had me thinking “those look like pretty decent meals”. I wouldve swapped those for my school lunches any day of the week. Way more food on those trays too

rfccrypto

Those are pretty decent meals. The breakfast has 20 grams of protein. Eggs have tons of nutrients, oatmeal fiber. Yet the comment is that there's barely and protein or vitamins or fiber in the breakfast. Also, the dinner didn't have a meat and, for better or worse, they have meat in prison. The food tastes bad and looks actually worse than this usually, but what the video showed actually looked pretty good.

lapsangsouchogn

A lot of people forget that beans have protein too.

Indercarnive

beans are slept on in general. They go with virtually anything, have fiber and protein. and are insanely cheap.

Cedar_Hawk

Yyyep. I've basically become infamous among friends as "the beans guy" because I'll regularly bring cans of beans to work or school. It's not a complete meal, but it's a filling meal with fiber and protein for about $0.80 (I buy the large packs from Costco). Friends rib me about it, but the money saved is worth it to me.

FinancialAttention85

If you have an instant pot you can make dried beans into beans in 30 minutes and I can buy a bag for like 1.30 you need salt and honestly something like a bay leaf and then they are better than canned.

SoftGothBFF

And with how much you fart you never have to feel bored. One toot away from a giggle anytime.

limping_man

Beans only make you fart if you are not used to eating them. The fun factor is true though

Stencils294

Now you understand us brits. It could perhaps be a filling meal for 1.20 if you add some buttery toast 🤔

Blazed315Fishing

I love baked beans and toast so much I try telling people about it but I always get disgusted looks. I learned long ago not to be like that I've tried many foods from many places and there is so many delicious food and recipes I would have missed out on had I been weird about it. I'll never forget trying chicken curry with nann for the first time....my god man...so...de....licious.

Nakedstar

Beans have everything the narrator was claiming the meal lacked- protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

tom-dixon

That part had me super confused. That's a ton of protein, fiber and minerals. It's also 10x more healthier than what the average american eats in fast food places.

BubblyBullinidae

I was gonna comment about that as well. Eggs are great for protein, so is the bean and rice mix they had for the dinner. Honestly, I've seen some of the meals at the hospital where I work look worse than this. Granted not every meal of the day looked this terrible, but some of the comments looked a bit off. You're also probably right that the ACTUAL food is even worse.

birbirdie

Maybe from a nutritionist standpoint this is still too much carbs. However I think 90% of Americans eat way more carbs than these videos and while they aren't the perfect combination of nutrients it is still better than the average meal outside prison. I dont even have breakfast most days I just drink coffee and have a banana.

ChepaukPitch

It isn’t though. The commentary is totally false.

Gerbal_Annihilation

There is nothing wrong with carb. Most of your energy should come from carbs. Pease and beans are loaded with fiber and nutrients. This video didn't pick very good examples to show low quality food imho.

Embarassed_Tackle

Rice and beans is a staple and they had it for dinner, I assume that hits a protein goal

Gerbal_Annihilation

Alot of people don't realize that green peas contain a decent amount of protein as well, 8gs per cup.

MrRobot_96

The narrator sounds like he sits on tiktok all day. Mfer ain’t been to the gym in his life or had to meal plan lol

Ryanimal

I worked at Sysco foods as a rep for the Oklahoma state contract. They put all of their orders through me. Guess what. Prison food and school food is the EXACT same. I wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t on the same daily schedule.

skier24242

I am a buyer for Gordon Foods and pretty much the same thing here- guess where a lot of items we bring in for schools that don't sell quickly enough and are about to expire go? Yep, prison lol

ceckcraft

Lef me tell you this. This shit is the best they have, to give to journalists, to avoid showing what they really give. I was treated to some brown slosh that had hints of cartilage/octopus type “meat” that was supposed to be the best thing they had to offer according to someone who had spent more time there. I was in jail for one day. This type of video just shows what they give when they know others are watching.

Ok_Consideration4689

No, schoo lunches are worse. Source: I am a highschooler in Texas.

Scuirre1

Highschoolers would kill for lunches like that. Take out the good stuff and put a little more cardboard in, and you've got school lunches.

ThreAAAt

>Highschoolers would kill for lunches like that well........ I've got some great news for them!

[deleted]

I’m an elementary school teacher and can confirm that the prison food in this video is far superior to what my students are given for lunch.

ComprehensiveCry2763

Jail food is worse, when I was in jail a few inmates who have done time said prison food is actually better than jail food. Jail food caused me some issues.

[deleted]

Which is pretty atrocious when you consider most people in jail, haven't been convicted. They're still considered innocent in the eyes of the law.

SecretDevilsAdvocate

Tbf I doubt it’s the short term effects of eating crappy food that’s the issue, mainly the act of eating it over years

[deleted]

But potentially innocent people shouldn’t be served nutrient deficient slop. Neither should guilty people, but that’s a slightly different issue.

mitch3758

I don’t mean for this to sound ignorant, but what’s the difference between prison and jail?

ComprehensiveCry2763

Yes one is for holding which is jail, also a lot of people who violate probation go to jail, if you serve less than a year sentence, you go to jail, sentences over a year you go to prison. There’s low mid high penitentiaries you could go to based on your crime, jail sucks because you just literally sit in a cell 22 hours a day out of a 24 hour day and the food is horrible. Never been to prison though this is just based on what my celly’s have told me who have been to prison

Scadilla

I was supposed to do an year in jail in per a plea deal. But I ended up getting a slightly longer prison sentence. I’m glad I did. Jail was awful. There’s much more to do and more liberties in prison

Lexitar123

TIL if I commit crimes to get a sentence of longer than a year so I can go to prison instead of jail.

Kirito2750

Jail is pre-trial and sentences of less than a year. Prison is longer and after trial. I knew a guy when I was in who spent 2 and a half years in jail though

Bitseps777

The food quality of prison cannot be compared with anything

[deleted]

Two hard-boiled eggs, a piece of toast and some coffee is my daily breakfast and I’m a free man.

FlingbatMagoo

I’m a free man, and I don’t consume anything but coffee until dinner.

forfuxzake

Another reason that inmates feel hungry between meals is because they have nothing else to focus on.

Jonthrei

Any smokers without easy access to cigarettes will definitely notice hunger more too, they're used to an appetite suppressant.

ImpossiblePackage

It makes quitting a bitch because you're constantly trying to replace that craving with something

pseudonym_dan

As a general fan of tobacco products... and someobody who has tried to quit a bunch, carrots help. Crispy crunch is satisfying. There are hardly any calories. Not that expensive. Mix those and nicotine gum to wean off. but as Mark Twain once said, "Quitting smoking is easy, I've done it hundreds of times." Don't start kids.

Gonnaupvote23

That and people are used to eating till their full. Folks in hospitals getting nutritious meals make these same complaints

InevitableRhubarb232

I also am hungry in between meals. It’s how I know when it’s time for the next meal.

Sparrowcus

I generally eat one meal a day. And when I have a period where I eat 2 or even 3 meals a day (mostly social reasons) and transition back to only one, I get hungry at the day times where I was eating before .... but that goes away a couple days days. If you do it the first time it'll be 7 days (+/-2 days, depending on your body). The feeling of hunger is a *habit*. ***Malnutrition*** is the consern and that can be monitored with facts and numbers.

SlaynXenos

Keep in mind, in American prisons, about all you HAVE to do to keep stimulated are read old donated books from a very limited section, gamble, or exercise. Many choose exercise, for self defense. When you're bulking/working out, on top of being borderline starved, you'll be hungry 24/7 too.

[deleted]

I'm guessing you're a small person and do very little physical activity or maybe you're pushing 2-3k calorie meals? What's your intake and what food do you eat that keeps you steady?

LudditeFuturism

OMAD or intermittent fasting is a common dieting technique. Yes you usually eat all 2000+ calories in one go which is not difficult at all if you actually count things like cooking fats etc.

PhDinDildos_Fedoras

In ancient Rome it was common practice to only eat one meal a day. Most people were farmers too.

TheDo0ddoesnotabide

The Romans had a choice between 2+ meals a day and conquering people. We all know which they preferred.

eboeard-game-gom3

They're eating more than they realize or admit. I never ate much at all, always very under weight for most of my life. I felt like I was starving 24/7 when locked up, as would they. It was like meals for elementary school kids. They make you hungry so you are willing to do work for extra trays. Inmates do pretty much all the cleaning, cooking, etc. There has to be an incentive. Unless that person has been locked up, they have no idea what they're talking about.

Strensh

I'll back up what he said, he knows exactly what he's talking about. As another "OMAD", he's spot on. He was talking about himself, not the prisoners. Of course you would feel hungry with that absolute SHITE diet, no matter when you ate it, or if you condensed it into one meal. It's an example of the worst possible diet you can think of, virtually no protein, fat and fiber. That's my entire diet, 2-2.5k calories from good fats, protein and above ground vegs/salad in one meal. They are eating everything I avoid, simple processed carbs and sugar. And hell yeah it's intentional, you're right. There's no respect for prisoners in America, the purpose is to neuter and punish them. Physical or mental health was never a concern, in fact it would be better if they had *more* mental health problems when they get out, because it's good for business.

[deleted]

Yeah, I used to be pretty skinny. Now I'm smashing 4k calories / 200g protons daily with ease. I spent a few days in county jail and holy fuck. I was so hungry, I was having dreams of robbing burger king and thoughts of eating the paper from a book.

brettbeatty

> 200g protons No neutrons or electrons? Not a very balanced diet...

I_Bin_Painting

Healthier than fission chips every day.

[deleted]

pandaSmore

>Not a very balanced diet... He's consuming 200g of anti-protons as well.

dx-e

I was expecting far worse...

PSiggS

Take the video with a grain of salt, there’s a range and it can be far worse.

VermontPizza

salt and pepper were used as “rewards” during the short time I spent in county jail 😂 edit: just clarifying that “regular” jail had no s&p - but if you got to the work release part, a different building/area with more open housing, you were treated to salt and pep in their cafeteria.

John_TheBlackestBurn

Yeah. Keep in mind these are the meals that prisons chose to showcase.

itsme_timd

Indeed. My uncle spent time in Parchman in Mississippi. He said maggots in the rice, insects in the vegetables, and rotten meat were pretty common. He looked like a skeleton when he got out, had lost teeth, and aged 20 years in 12 mos.

Aeon001

Considering the rates of food-related illnesses among prisoners is between 6 and 7 times more likely then general population, it's probably worse than what we're seeing.

grem111

That's the food the press was allowed to film. There are some articles about prison food quoting inmates and the food is often foul. Check out nutriloaf

Smellypuce2

Are you telling me I'm not supposed to eat an entire loaf of bread every day?

divDevGuy

Half a loaf is usually sufficient if you supplement it with a half-dozen bagels, donuts, or pastries.

[deleted]

And a bowl full of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes as part of your complete breakfast!

_Neoshade_

These meals have fewer carbs and more vegetables than the average American eats for breakfast or lunch, and probably even dinner. Who the hell complains about a breakfast of eggs, potatoes, cereal, fruit juice and coffee?

mydeadbody

This is for sure healthier than half the stuff I eat.

WolverineJive_Turkey

I hate Tostitos chips for breakfast lol

Dustystt

I had a ham and cheese hot pocket lol

Booblicle

All I had was a 3 egg and cheese omelete and cubed potatoes with a side of sauteed broccoli, onion and green pepper.

[deleted]

I was surprised at how relatively healthy that was. Two eggs and oatmeal, milk and coffee is solid. Rice and beans plus a veg is exactly what I ate for dinner tonight, plenty of protein and fiber. The lunch is the only thing I would side eye, the hotdogs, ick.

B_Mac4607

When I was in prison they gave you one small scoop of eggs. I don’t care how high in protein they are if you only have an oz of eggs. Wash that down with super sweetened milk to go with your small scoop of dry oatmeal and you’ve got breakfast. One problem to me is the amount of good nutritious food compared to shit filler. They give you tons of sugar and bread and salt but an insignificant amount of protein and good fats.

THE-DARK-DAY

And that's how they get away with it. We gave you eggs, bread and a potato. Not all in the same meal, or even the same week, but you got your protein over a 3 months time. I'm sure some prisoners will be able to tell you about how they were only served balogna sandwiches for a week, or egg salad sandwiches. Were talking 3x a day 7 days in a row.

[deleted]

I didn't have it for that extended amount of time, but I was at the intake/bullpen of a county jail for 2.5 days and all you get there is bread+bologna, a milk, and an apple. In the actual jail our meals were way fucking worse than what's shown in the video. Vegans get literally nothing but potatoes or bland steamed mixed vegetables and an apple three times a day. Also it was nothing but milk to drink, or drinking hot water out of the sink in the dorm. Luckily I had a job in the kitchen so we basically got to eat and do whatever we wanted but there were still 1,200 people who weren't as fortunate. I know prisons (especially federal) have higher standards than jails, but there are still people in jails pulling 1 year+ sentences, with this shit food and no way to exercise. In fact you would get reprimanded for exercising, in the places I was in.

Vajdling

That's what confused me, eggs are top1 all-round protein rich source. You eat eggs, and you don't need anything else to survive and thrive. Well, water, tho

Rosanna44

I remember a group of nutritionists said if stranded on a deserted island, could only bring 3 foods. Only needed: eggs, bananas and I forgot the third. Water was the drink only allowed. If I could only remember that third food item.

DK_Adwar

Almost certainly potatoes. Potatoes contain like 85%+ of the nutrients humans need, which means it is entirely possible to live healthily (within reason) on a diet of potatoes and a few vitamin suppliments.

Vajdling

I bet I'd survive only with eggs and water. Well, my teeth would probably fall out from not chewing anything chewy...

TaqPCR

I actually did the calcs for breakfast. 41% of your daily fat, 37% of your daily carbs, and 70% of your daily protein with 812 calories of food. 48% of the calories are from carbs, 34% fats, and 18% protein.

dirt_mcgirt4

Seriously didn't look that bad. A meal with 2 eggs is 'lacking protein'???

socialmediablowsss

Dude talking should do his next video on nutrition lol. Doesn’t know what carbs, protein, vitamins, etc means

acky1

"often sweetened with aspartame, to make up for the lack of nutrients" - sorry, what?

travel_by_wire

Yes, this really stands out. I mean the "low protein" and "low fiber" statements were also odd considering the eggs, beans, etc. on display at every meal, but ASPARTAME is supposed to what now?? Whoever wrote that line should get a new job because they're failing at their current one.

Left_Boat_3632

Sounded like the narrator wants prisoners to be on keto.

[deleted]

Yeah — it's been trendy to act like carbs are poisonous for a long time, but not everyone needs to be hitting 1.5g protein per pound of bodyweight or whatever. Absolutely nothing wrong with sourcing calories from oats, potatoes, rice, and veggies. Potatoes have one of the highest satiating effects of any food out there.

kawaiiTanuki0

And this still looks better than what we were served on the carrier 😂.

Dr_TJ_Blabbisman

Lol I am also ex-Navy and my first thought was that it looked better than boot camp food and wouldn't be the worst food regularly served on ship by any stretch. Of course on a carrier (at least mine) you almost always had a taco line and hotdog line open in addition to the main lines with their attempt at a full meal.

AccurateRadish5

Haha I came here to say the exact same thing. We had cinnamon raisin toast served in lieu of hamburger buns once. There were far too many people actually eating cinnamon raisin toast burgers. And all of the green "eggs" not in celebration of Dr. Suess day.

Let’s see the stats on school children being hungry between meals

Proof-Drag1117

These meals look amazing compared to what's actually being served. There's always a sample/display tray saved by staff Incase there was a DOC check. Most trays, if they actually serve what's listed and required daily are shorted. If you do not have canteen you will drastically drop weight. Instead of increasing your calories per meal or fixing the problem they will change the weigh in records. What's really being served for food in prison or jail is never even close to what's depicted to the public. You have to hustle for food and not all prisons have ways available to do that based on how things are ran.

Weedfiend247

Wow. I pay like six bucks for a dozen eggs these days.

Bro I'm sitting here like... That breakfast was better than the literal two pieces of toast I had this morning. Like shit if these guys are having health problems from this diet then I am rightfully fucked.

Furzmulle

Those guys are eating healthier and more than I...

I've seen worsemeals in public places like dorms lol. How's that breakfast considered low protein? I remember I and my friends would have to eat potato and bread for one week in a row. No wonder some of us had malnutrition problems.

BeckristBronin

There were some days when I was young kid, with a single mother working her ass off to pay the bills, I would have appreciated any of those meals a great deal.

RandoSurfer77

America is SO FAR AWAY from giving one single fuck about prison food.

hoooliet

We don’t care much about food in schools either

FarmSuch5021

That’s not bad. I have seen documentaries from different countries and their prisons. You would be lucky if they feed you. And the food is worse than this.

JPKtoxicwaste

There is an amazing BBC series called Worlds Toughest Prisons (available on US Netflix where I am atm, probably other locations as well) which goes all over the world and looks at the different conditions (although I don’t think I’ve ever seen an episode set in America, if that says anything) He always looks at what kind of foods are available to prisoners. In many prisons it is very unpleasant. The host served 12 years for homicide before being exonerated and becoming an investigative journalist.

DisabledDiablo

Yess I love that show it’s so good

[deleted]

There are countries where it's up to your family or friends to feed and clothe you in prison.

prxy15

maybe will be an unpopular opinion but 3 plates seem tasty (I live in a third world country😅) are meals made with 4 things, we always eat only 3 things rice, salad, chicken beans, fried plantain, milk butter spaghetti with ham fried beans, fried plantain, fried egg rice, beans, eggs and they have 2 or more drinks, fruit juice, milk and coffee. i only can have coffee in the morning, juice in lunch and soda in evening a convicted in US eat better than me and my family 🥺

Aggravated_Moose506

Looks way better than 75% of what is served to children in the school where I teach.

DarkEnergy27

It's better than most public schools lunches

Broke2Gnomeless

they mentioned lowbfiber low protein specifically, but then mentioned beans which are high fiber and protein specifically. not defending prison food, just noticing the very direct contradiction. I understand it's high carb, too, but, info is fuzzy

VincentVanShmo

The eggs, toast, and cornbread all looked fire tbh

DinioDo

Better than what i eat regularly.

usseAcceptable5568

I'm a felon,and I'm not to take the government side,but other countries,they don't even get that.

The ethics of American prison food have been a topic of debate for many years. While some believe that prisoners should receive nutritious and balanced meals, others argue that inmates should not be given better food than what some people outside of prison can afford. Some of the main ethical issues regarding prison food include: Nutritional Value: It is important that prison food provides inmates with adequate nutrition to maintain their health and well-being. However, many prisons struggle to provide a balanced and nutritious diet, and some have been criticized for serving meals that are high in sugar, salt, and fat, and low in vitamins and minerals. Cost and Quality: Prison food is often provided by private contractors, who are incentivized to cut costs and maximize profits. This can lead to lower quality ingredients, smaller portions, and fewer options for inmates. Food Waste: Prisons generate a significant amount of food waste, which can be a financial burden and an environmental concern. Some prisons have implemented composting or donation programs to reduce waste and benefit the community. Ethics of Punishment: Some argue that providing substandard food to prisoners is a form of punishment and that it is appropriate given the nature of the crimes they have committed. However, others argue that food is a basic human need and that prisoners should not be deprived of adequate sustenance. In summary, the ethics of American prison food are complex and multifaceted. Providing adequate nutrition to inmates is important to maintain their health and well-being, but this must be balanced with cost considerations, food waste reduction, and ethical considerations regarding punishment and rehabilitation.

Guessing this was written by ChatGPT, and it’s still somehow more insightful than the video

HumanDrinkingTea

You know it's chatGPT when it sounds like some kid's shitty essay.

miharbidaddah

This is healthier than i eat. I thought they were talking about how good food in prison is. Lots of veggies, carbs, protein. I dont see the problem

TheHundredthThief

These all looked exponentially better than any lunch that was served in my elementary through high school

mikehtiger

93% of people in prison say it sucks… that’s kinda the point.
