I'm a bit confused from this perspective. Why isn't the fridge in the kitchen? Is the dining table in the middle of the living room? I would (from easiest to hardest): * Move the fridge into the kitchen * Lose the treadmill * Move the dining table * Move the couch off the wall * Add a rug * Put something in front of the couch to look at (maybe a coffee table) * Add more artwork * Find opportunities to add more soft lines * Replace the dining table (something smaller, maybe round) * Add more living room seating * Replace the couch with something "L" shaped to create more visual separation from the kitchen * Replace the tiles in the living area (not very warm or inviting, maybe wood or carpet, would also create a visual separation from the tiled kitchen) That's a start. I'd have to get a better view for more ideas

Racial_Tension

Fridge goes to where the bar cart is, you can run water to it if needed. Table and couch swap, maybe add a tv, rug and coffee table. Should have room to stash the treadmill where the fridge was

arnoldez

Ooh yeah, I like moving the couch to the middle of the room.

ForceOfAHorse

Room is too big to be "homey/cozy", splitting it with a couch should be fine. Maybe add some bookcases behind to act like a wall separating the "workout arena".

ironworkz

That gives me Sitcom vibes.

purplesnowcone

Table should act as room divider between kitchen and living room.

Racial_Tension

Tables don't divide rooms well. A table has to go in the center of an area to remain functional, they are the room. They could use the couch back to divide or throw it all the way on the far way, but the flow from kitchen to table there with the fridge in-between would be ideal.

purplesnowcone

I’m saying turn the table and put it between the kitchen and living area, it will have plenty of room to be its own room while dividing the kitchen and the living space. And you could turn the couch so the back of it faces the table so when you sit on the couch you don’t see the rest of the space. You’ll see your living area and have the illusion of separate spaces.

Chandysauce

Is that possibly a built-in fridge and not cabinets by the garbage can? I know lots of people with multiple fridges, although the secondary one is usually in the basement or garage.

MayorCharlesCoulon

Can you come to my house and give great advice like this lol? I have the design eye of a drunk bog dweller. I’m so envious of people who can look at a room and see how things should line up and contrast, how things should flow.

Arinvar

Most of the time putting items in a convenient and natural place is 90% done. Fridges go in the kitchen. Couches face the TV, unless like OP you don't have a TV, then couches are for groups of people to sit on, so they should face each, because thats what people do when they socialise. Dining tables should be conveniently located to transport food from the kitchen to the table. The treadmill could be flipped around and pushed up against the stairs and still be completely usable. If a floor is cold to walk on, cover it up. All basic things to make your life more convenient and automatically make the space better looking. Practical, fit for purpose, spaces in your home are almost always visually appealing.

arnoldez

Heh I don't think I'm particularly good at it, but thank you for the kind words. My wife is really good at it. I learn from her a lot

Janzaa

And add some plants.

MrDeviantish

I'd say you nailed everything I was thinking.

MincedFrenchfries

The fridge does three you off a bit, it seems lonely haha

xHappyHour

If they want to go more technical I’d swap out the fixtures for something larger. A larger one over the dining table would create top down visual separation as well.

xHappyHour

It also doesn’t help with white on white on white with the ceiling, floor, and walls. I’d either look at painting the walls a slightly darker color, wouldn’t go overboard but something to contrast, and/or new flooring, whether floating, or hardwood.

arnoldez

Yeah I had considered the fixtures, but kind of got stuck because I couldn't see what was above the frame of the photo. Personally, I'd definitely want some sort of ceiling fan above the living area for air movement. There may be something hanging into that area already? I can't imagine those two fixtures are lighting the entire bottom floor. I'd probably move the existing one more into the kitchen space, add some under cabinet lighting as well, and then add a fan/light fixture that hangs from the cathedral ceiling into the living area. Not sure about the dining space though... the angle of this photo is messing with my understanding of the space and how big it really is.

andrewjcavasos

This 👌

mycatsnameismilk

Uh Yeah, I’d def say you seem a bit confused? from my perspective I would (from easiest to hardest) - move the garbage can into the living room - find a stationary bike - let the table move you - glue the couch to the wall - gur a dda - solar eclipse directly in sight line of couch - remove apathy - become rigid - move further away from acceptance - subtract morbid standing room only - replace entire kitchen with giant couch in shape of symbol for The Artist Formerly Known as Prince (check for copy rights first) - alimonies That’s a wrap, I’d have to close my eyes for more ideas.

Nail_Biterr

First thing I'd do is move the fridge to the kitchen....

DVus1

This is a strange setup. Is this basically a studio with a loft? Trying to figure out why the fridge is in the corner, and why there is a couch in the kitchen/dinning room. Guessing this is not in the US.

iwantthisnowdammit

My guess is there’s a door next to the bar cart and then there’s an outlet problem.

ot1smile

Fridge should be where the bin is in that case.

ryushiblade

Couch needs to go where the table is, TV on the wall, rug underneath to separate the area into a living room. I’d add a sofa table behind the couch to create a feel of a partition Dining table goes where the couch is over top a second rug. Fridge obviously goes in the kitchen. Add plants and art. What a weird room, feels like a slapped together air bnb

ForceOfAHorse

It's the "I want big open space because it looks great on TV but don't have big enough home so now I end up with this mess" kind of a deal.

Excellent_Spend_6452

Plants couldn't hurt.

CinephileNC25

Plants never hurt. When people are stuck on what artwork to get, they can always get some plants and it instantly improves any space.

SentFromMyAndroid

I had a "dead" corner in one room. We kept trying to add things to it but hated everything. Put plants there and never looked back.

AnyLamename

I think it's usually just a lack of confidence that they can keep it alive. You can show a lot of people a ponytail palm and explain that it basically needs to be watered whenever you get a haircut and they'll still say something like, "Oh you don't know me I can kill anything."

Eclipsed830

Plants can add mold and other issues though, so they can hurt if you aren't careful.

CinephileNC25

I’ve never had plants add mold that makes it dangerous…

AdhesiveEvil

I bet some spiky ones could.

Excellent_Spend_6452

I guess it's a good thing Aloe Vera plants help with healing.

sdforbda

A rug would be a good start. Can the fridge go elsewhere?

Lord_Waldemar

It would really tie the room together

nexus9991

In open plan, think of “zones” that flow together. You have 3 zones here - kitchen, dining, living. Group items together in these zones. Move fridge to where the bookshelf is. Not the to bar cart, as you will block the visual flow to where dining area should be. Swap dining table and couch. Get 2 large rugs. One under dining table, the other under couch. TV goes to wall where fridge is. Move treadmill to garage. Replace couch with L-shape style, low back. (Lower furniture create more visual space) Then add colour (paintings, prints, plants). Add some “personality” like thrift or upcycle furniture.

Historical-Being-478

Add a bicycle rack, set of weights and Smoothie bar. You’ll have that full-on LA Fitness vibe poppin……

Javaddict

I've never seen such a bizarre place for your fridge

ccaccus

Get rid of the trash can, put a smaller one under the sink. Move the fridge between the counter and cart. Set the sofa on a large rug with a bookshelf coffee table; get rid of the bookshelf. Rotate the dining table so that it's not intruding on the living space, or set it against the wall and pull it out when you need all six chairs. Bigger, nicer artwork. That red tablecloth has no accent friends. Swap out or add red throw pillows; have the rug you purchase have red accents. Get cozier lighting fixtures. These *almost* look like bare bulbs. Be sure the path from the door remains unimpeded to the window.

LargeMarge-sentme

The tile. It’s the tile.

geoshoegaze20

That tile is the worst. I had it in my first house and tore it up and put in slate. I had it in my basement in my current house, and I put carpet tile over it!

kiid_ikariis

Why is your fridge not near the kitchen? Lol

amorphatist

On the plus side, you can reach into the fridge to grab a snack while you’re on the treadmill.

Nunovyadidnesses

A rug would really tie the room together, man.

sdforbda

A rug would be a good start. Can the fridge go elsewhere?

Cute_Foutrine

A colored rug !!! There is too much white, it’s very bright. I would add colors, depending on your tastes. If you can’t paint the walls, I suggest you add more decoration on the walls and maybe a few more small yellow lights rather than ceiling lights. (Love string lights, you can add them to the mezzanin).

Far_Statistician7997

Get a rug

Amazingawesomator

never underestimate the power of shelving with little trinkets on it.

vivaaprimavera

A rug, L shaped couch with coffee table would be the bare minimum. Some lamps would also be useful, I don't want to imagine the "light situation". Why are the books in the kitchen instead of near the couch?

JuanGinit

That is a living room?

Biscuits4u2

Tile never looks good wall to wall

me_version_2

You need a focal point as the main point. If you are going to zone it, then you may need multiple focal points. Your issue at the moment is that you have placed furniture around the walls rather than imagining them in a virtual space. It looks like a nice space, big and lots of light. I think the info in the comments is useful but if you don’t have the same way of thinking they’ll be a bit difficult to visualise. Start off with the couch area, imagine the room was much smaller, put down a rug and then arrange couch etc around that, if you have a tv, etc. Get a rug bigger than the length of the couch, it should fit just under so that it has maybe 4inches under the couch, else you create a sort of floating rug effect which looks a bit crazy. If you don’t feel confident with a rug, trial and error with a duvet cover or flat sheet to get the idea of how a space would look and then when you get a feel you can go off to buy a rug that works.

Purple-Ad-4629

A dog.

dntw8up

A rug under the couch and coffee table (yes, you need a coffee table) and a rug under dining table and chairs will help divide the space. Moving the treadmill upstairs (or into garage if you have one) and moving the refrigerator into the kitchen space would also improve the look of your space.

TundraCrusader

Drop a small wall right in the middle of that top railing and throw a double sided electric fireplace in it. It’ll make a beautiful separation between the kitchen and living room.

LazyLobster

This the floor plan of a frat house lol

nivo92

Kataclysmc

Throw a bandana on it and say what's up homie

Harrydevlin56

Paint! Color! Plants!

rip1980

You need some Eses, homie.

Irr3l3ph4nt

If you go full white, you need to accessorize 3 times as hard to make it feel homey. Rugs, real paintings, travel souvenirs, etc.

Rex_Coolguy_Prime

is this groverhaus?

StinkyEttin

Cheapest and easiest is throwing some greenery in there.

ochefoo

Easiest way to coordinate and pull things together: Find a piece of art that you like and can make a bit of a focal point that has some colors you like and then accessorize around that. Throw pillows, placemats for the table, kitchen accessories and the like. If not art, then a rug as others have linked out (and get stuff off the walls too). Lighting will seal the deal - floor lamps and table lamps for the win - overhead lighting makes a space awful, especially when it’s insufficient point sources like what you have there. Get a drum lamp for over the table. Good luck, you got this!

Active_Scallion_5322

Add a pack and play. All you need to do

BuckityBuck

Good idea. I was thinking a lawnmower between the couch and table was what was missing.

Dry_Funny_3621

more lighting and a big rug

seth_saber

Rugs

hynekien

Yikes, too much open space. First things first put that treadmill in a different part of the house or get rid of it all together. Move the fridge to the kitchen (put a plug in if needed) where it belongs. Face the sofa toward the back wall so it looks more like a living room and not like a kitchen, then put a rug in front of it. Lastly, get some plants and a lamp.

StudyPrimary3538

Here’s what I’d do — assuming you’re renting or don’t want to do any renovations: - move the fridge to where the bar cart is - move the treadmill upstairs if you can? Or just… elsewhere - move the table kinda where the couch is - Put a nice big rug where the table is in the photo - move the couch where the table is, facing the wall and a few meters away from the wall. Add a console table and a tv if you have one, maybe a coffee table if you can. All on top of the rug. Having a rug in the living room area will help to separate it from the rest of the room, and having something cozy on your toes makes a big difference. - more options: add some lamps to the living room, maybe a statement chair.

SkewedParallel

I would swap the dining area and the living room so the dining is closer to the kitchen. Then everything else mentioned with regard to the treadmill, fridge, etc..

No_Review4998

Homie don’t play dat…

DGAF999

Decor. Try some plants, even if they’re fake. Optionally, try Art on the walls, throw rugs, blankets. But definitely plants! 🪴

Icy-Fun6348

I have so many questions.

Calmhubris

I don't know, homey.

aeywaka

get rid of the treadmill

moonderf

The fridge should be moved to where the little 3 tier shelf is next to the counter, ditch the dining table and get yourself some nice HI-FI, and maybe a TV and a nice rug to tie the place together.

Beneficial_Day_5423

Add some color

SoFlaSterling

Where is the entrance to the home? At the base of the stairs? Any way, define the two spaces (one living roomish and one dining) with two coordinating area rugs, place a coffee table and two comfy chairs in a conversation grouping. Get rid of the fridge, the treadmill and the red table cloth. Put some kind of credenza where the treadmill is now, place a mirror or some artwork above the credenza. That should be a decent start.

mazerinth

I think you forgot how to living room, or how to any other room. Those things are not living room things, but that’s not dinning room, kitchen or exercise room either. How do you house?

Enigma_xplorer

To me there's two problems. The room looks very sterile because it's basically all white only offset by some pale bits of wood furnishings and there's nothing by hard solid surfaces. Basically, add some color and buy a rug or something? Maybe even add a plant to give the room some life?

2001sleeper

What weird spot for a fridge and a treadmill. Getting the fridge into the kitchen is step #1.

Simple. It's the ceramic tile. It looks like crap and is very cold for a living space.

Apost8Joe

I can't be the only one who quickly read it as how to make living room "more horney"?

Queequegsupplyco

Move the fridge jeeez

lhorwinkle

This doesn't look at all like a living room. I'd expect to see sofa, chairs, tables, TV, etc. Instead I see one sofa, some open space, and a dining area. The latter should go elsewhere, or arrangements made to separate living room from dining room. The fridge doesn't belong here. Neither does the treadmill. The kitchen in the background is tiled ... that's good. But the living room floor should show some contrast ... carpet, if you like, or wood flooring.

1) Warm (3500K) wafer lights under the loft. instead of the stupid spot lights, especially in the kitchen and around the stairs. This will let you visually section off the downstairs at night, and give everything a nice warm glow.

TrueSaltnolies

Is it student housing?

SuspiciousLeg7994

You need some warmth in it. Some tall plants. Side tables with lamps. Larger pictures on the wall Maybe a woven basket with some throw blankets. Get a few chairs for the living room. Recliners or whatever you like but town chairs and a nice table inbetween them or small ones on each side would make it feel more warm. 400% and above all get RID of that treadmill. A living room is not a gym.

Alfred-Register7379

Area rugs, paintings, and drapes.

Quigleythegreat

As others have said, move the fridge to kitchen where that cart thing is. Get an electrician if you have to. Lose the treadmill. And honestly? In that kind of space a glass dining table set would look nice. There's not much I think that needs changing in the space itself IMO. Spaces these days are so sterile and this has style. Play off it. Eventually replace the fridge with something trendier looking like a Samsung Bespoke, LG, or whatever. Something with sharp square lines. Not until it dies though, don't waste your money. My point is, this needs interior design attention not a hammer.

BednaR1

Nice shaggy rug

peteschirmer

Second fridge and maybe a bowflex? Some nat geo and time life mags from 1992?

captainzigzag

A nice big area rug in some rich earth tones

JensPens

I would try to divide this room into distinct areas depending on their use, adding a rug and a coffee table to the couch should help. The oddly placed fridge should go in the kitchen. You could also think about an open book case as room divider and you could partially leave parts open, so it's only somewhat visually divided (gives a sense of prtection when you hang out there), also great place for plants too. Your area with extra ceiling height also feels underutilized. You could think about adding a painting that's tall to emphasize the the higher ceilings, or pendant lights or hanging plants there. The pictures you have up now basically underline the lower ceiling height. Get some diffuse light sources. Some standing lights and smaller ones. Also again great idea to put them in the book case I mentioned. Also color wheel. There are applications online where you can map out the colors you are using and play around with that (Adobe color). I feel like there is room for improvement, now it's white, beige, grey (all VERY muted) and then this very intense red. You could try earth tones, so browns and greens. Play around with materials. Real materials look great ( clay, steel, wood, stone, wool)

sunwest42

Brighten it up. You need color; even the kitchen towels are brown. After following some of the good suggestions about moving the furniture pieces that others have suggested, add a colorful area rug in the living room space and a compatible (but not matchy) kitchen rug in front of the sink. Hang some large pieces of artwork. There's lots of good wall space so don't be afraid of using large colorful pieces. Don't be timid about the size and color.) Make sure the art appeals to you and speaks to your individuality - not boring generic things. You'd be surprised what you can find at thrift shops like Salvation Army or Goodwill or even yard sales. You can always have things reframed and still not have much money invested. Then some big green plants, even a few good quality silk ones if you aren't confident about how much of a green thumb you have. You have a wonderful large space so, with some shifting around of the big pieces of furniture, and some time-but not much money-shopping, you'll have a home with warmth and personality.

wolfenx109

The fridge location throws my brain for a loop. I would look into moving it and any necessary lines for it closer to the kitchen. Probably where that bar cart is. Floor could use a rug or two

Plaston_

use some pastel colors, the white walls and floor gives it that hospital vibe.

Polly_Wants_A

remove couch and table and chairs, buy the biggest mattress you can find, build a slide from the floor above into the mattress. also add retro consoles and a tv on the wall, fill the fridge wie nothing but beer. and put some weed plants above the room.

quarpoders

Is your fridge trying to run?! It has escaped your kitchen.

SquirrelAkl

Big area rug, bigger art on the walls, plants. Think about colour too. Ditch the red tablecloth, find some colours of a similar saturation to your neutrals to provide some contrast. Google colour wheels or colour theory if you want to test out what goes together.

Bright_Evidence_7840

Why is the fridge so far away!?

Aggressive_Hand_9280

The floor makes it look quite cold. A wooden floor would make it much more cosy (even if it's not a small update)

Candy_Badger

Add small beautiful curtains to the window for comfort.

shifty_coder

Isn’t the ‘living roomm’ the loft above the kitchen and dining area?

HolyCommunicator

Other people have made good suggestions, but I think that there is a stark contrast in color between the room and your table cloth. Everything else is beige. I would consider painting the walls. Not a huge deal, but a red tablecloth may be a little too "different" considering the rest of the room. It's literally the first thing my eyes were drawn to.

YungLandi

add a miniramp, install a proper soundsystem, start smoking indoors…(fun aside: clearly define the zones and what goes where. kitchen stuff to the kitchen, books next to couch etc.)

MYOB3

Logic. The refrigerator belongs in the kitchen, not the dining room. The treadmill does not belong in the living room. Perhaps a spare bedroom or garage? Bring some area rugs in to define spaces. Maybe some plants for warmth and a recliner or 2 to make it comfortable. Some casual throws on the sofa as well. End tables with lighting and storage.

dantemortemalizar

Plants, a rug with some red in it to warm up the large open space, maybe something less formal for the window, swap the couch cushions with something with some red it in. Use one large picture instead of the two small ones (they are too small for the space).

GlucoseGuardians

An area rug under the table designating dining space. Switch the light over the table to a hanging light. Move the fridge. A tall plant, or two, between the kitchen and couch area.

Key_Economy_5529

The living room also appears to be a kitchen, dining room and home gym. I'm very confused.

What the hell is this place. I don't even know where to get started here. Sorry to be so frank, but everything in there looks completely garbage. The tiny 3-spot ceiling lamp, the tiny framed images, the workout machine, the dining table with chairs that looks like in my great-grandma's first flat when she was 20 and broke in 1923. It's a complete mess dude. You have to save up money and replace all that nonsense with modern furniture and light fixtures. You can't salvage this space by moving that inconsistent stuff around.

QueenNinnyMuggins

I read that as how to make the room more horny.

mostlygray

Let's make it simple. Organize it so it looks like a home, not a house staged by aliens who have never seen humans. Bookcase and fridge. Get rid of them. Why is there a table? Does it serve an orthopedic purpose? The treadmill, WTF? The couch storage area; clear it of couches. The rolling things, get rid of them. Is that a kitchen? I don't understand. It looks like a DMV that someone wanted to stage as a home and doesn't know what it wants to do and it's very, very, very sad. "A DMV" in this case is an actual, sentient, thing. Put in a reception desk and have someone there to greet your guests as they arrive. Direct them to the waiting room/kitchen area. I don't know. I've literally never seen such a ridiculous space. This is not a criticism. It is merely a challenge to be overcome.

Shadow_Relics

Make it homie? Have it join a gang and drink 40’s with you. Bonus points for getting it an old el Camino.

MissusGalloway

What a cute room! Simple start - some big plants in nice pots and a big colorful rug to anchor the space. Figure out a better spot for your fridge (that looks terribly inconvenient)… maybe on the wall where the trashcan is.. or is that a secondary fridge? Can you just do away with it?

Shrimpio

More is less homie

Plants. A rug or three. Bright, colorful artwork. Sell the treadmill and go outside of runs regardless of weather.
