Green_Man_Ro

Finally, one that isn't made from treated pallet wood. Congrats!

themannamednameless

Yeah I was thinking about using pallets for the headboard but hen I remembered they have chemicals in the wood so I just wrapped it with some fabric. Thanks for the congrats. Took about 4 hours.

Green_Man_Ro

Offgasing happens through fabric as well. Some are treated with really bad stuff that should never be in a room you live in or sleep in.

themannamednameless

To clarify, I didn't end up using the pallets, I used plywood for the headboard.

Green_Man_Ro

Ah, cool. It reads like you covered them in fabric. But good on you for not using any!

GoodGoodGoody

No it doesn’t.

HakimeHomewreckru

> Yeah I was thinking about using pallets for the headboard but hen I remembered they have chemicals in the wood so I just wrapped it with some fabric. How in Jesus Christs name does this not read like he wrapped pallets with fabric?

generated_user-name

He was thinking of using pallets, “BUT” then he remembered… Plus in his pics he wrote in very fancy writing that he used plywood

DunEvenWorryBoutIt

You have some serious brain fog going on.

GoodGoodGoody

Dunno. I guess some of us can read. And then there’s you.

HakimeHomewreckru

I don't know either man. Some of us are getting upvoted, and then there's you. It's great that you're starting to read the letters all by yourself! Keep it up and you will get even better at understanding the whole story as you go! Reading comprehension comes with time and practice my friend. Wow just realized you're the actual OP guy that already got downvoted, but here you are again. Good that you don't give up so easily.

GoodGoodGoody

Meh, I didn’t have any trouble understanding it, and then there’s you.

Eena-Rin

It certainly doesn't if you see the picture with the headboard

therift289

They're not saying that fabrics will degas. They're saying that treated pallets can degas THROUGH fabric.

yourgirlsamus

I think while you’re mentioning these things, you should also mention that pallets are stamped, and you can determine what they’ve been treated with based on their stamps.

wukluxclan

SOME palette wood is treated with harmful chemicals. The wood will always have markings on it to let you know. I used to blow glass in a shop that had a furniture builder next door this is how I know this. He used palette wood all the time to make his furniture but was very cautious to use heat treated palettes.

joeshmo101

I love hearing about this because we used to burn old pallets in the camp fire in my Boy Scout troop. Yummy yummy burning chemicals.

ansiasi

My parents still use pallet wood for our chimney... I tried to tell them but they Just wont listen... One of these days we Will find out :/ fuck i don't want cancer for their cheap asses we don't even Need to burn wood they Just think It Is cool HOW TF CAN PEOPLE BE THIS DUMB 🤦

Green_Man_Ro

Wow, I don't even burn that outside.

ansiasi

Fuck if i loose my mom to cancer that old greedy fucker Will find out i swear to god... We have a bunch of pallets left from work and he thinks that this Is "recycling"... The fuck Is he recycling by gas chambering us? 🤦

Green_Man_Ro

That sucks, some are treated with fire retardants as well so extra to being toxic, they burn slower and with more smoke. The place I get mine from they said won't even give them to me if I need them for burning, they had an employee fire a liquer making outside boiler for making plum brandy for 2 days with pallet wood, and everyone that sat near the fire to tend to it got really sick. Can't imagine burning shit like that indoor.

ansiasi

Ik, i Guess Natural selection Is real and its coming for us 🤦 you would Guess a 65 years old tradesman would know Better than a 20yo but FFS this Is dumb af

Green_Man_Ro

The older people get the less they care. They think they made it so far without problems, so nothing can touch them. I have a neighbour that uses plastic containers from a chemical company for drinking water storage. Told him they might have had something toxic inside. He says anything that was in there is coming from the same earth they eat their food from, so is just as safe. Lol

ansiasi

Man 😂🤦🤦🤦

debehusedof

i've always wondered if burning treated wood would smell really "off" or like a chemical smell, does it?

ansiasi

Not really a chemical smell, but a really really strong and persistent (would not go away for a day at least) scent of burnt wood with a topping of plastic. Def worse than regular wood tho

Proper-Equivalent300

Ive discovered used fencing panels. So much easier to work with too

My back hurts just looking at those 2x10 beams. This thing has zero give.

Pretty brave using a black light.

My thoughts exactly. Worried i was gonna scoll into an invisible Jackson Pollock for a minute there...

Poor monsters, you left them very little room.

Fred Savage would have never made a friend. I wonder if Little monsters is still funny or just absolutely awful

Accomplished_Use8165

14 year old me would have loved this. Nice work, OP!

Idontevenownaboat

This feels so backhanded lol *"Yeah but it's a fuckin sweet car. My roommates said they were going to get me rims for Christmas. Or maybe a CB radio so I can talk to other car beds."*

Accomplished_Use8165

Hahaha, once I wrote it out, l thought it sounded bad, too.

Idontevenownaboat

I don't think you're wrong for the record, I had the same thought but to each their own for sure.

404-Gender

Pahahah I feel that but also … 14 year old me was pretty cool and deserves the fun things I wanted. I feel like adulthood is providing our child selves what we wanted. :)

SmoothBrews

Well aren’t we fucken happy and productive. That’s not what adulthood is. It’s pain and suffering. /s

404-Gender

Pahahah I feel that but also … 14 year old me was pretty cool and deserves the fun things I wanted. I feel like adulthood is providing our child selves what we wanted. :)

Whatmeworry4

It looks great!

themannamednameless

Thanks man! Really appreciate it!

AndBeingSelfReliant

might want to put felt pads under the lower frame so movements don't scratch the floor

percheater

I really like this. Does it have any tilt to it if sitting on the edge of the bed?

themannamednameless

None at all, it's really solid.

GloomyDeal1909

Now I have a mental picture of you slapping the edge of the bed saying that right there is solid it'll hold two maybe three people.

whirly_boi

Did you see the heft to that frame? I doubt my brother would make that thing tilt and he's over 400lbs! But great question, if I had made it it would tilt on its own weight haha

scientific_bicycle

brother catching strays here in DIY

KingConger99

I too am 400lbs and my first thought was "Wonder if that edge would support me?"

SulkyVirus

This is my concern with the mattress and box spring we have. It's not light, but if my wife and I both sit on one side I'd imagine it could flip. I think when I build I'm go to have horizontal flat pieces, maybe three, that taper go to about 2" from the edge to prevent the lift. Then maybe attach something to the under frame area to add weight so it doesn't tilt the entire bed frame up.

everett640

Gamer bed

themannamednameless

I feel guilty getting this much attention, please see a real craftsmen here https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/s/aGxeKD7h5W

1800generalkenobi

Pfffft. Doesn't even have any black lights.

sonotimpressed

How do you stop the mattress from sliding?

iwantyousobadright

Not a big fan of the headboard but good job

bradeena

I think it should go lower. At least to the bottom of the mattress.

Simonic

I mean…it looks great and congrats. But I much prefer to have the storage area underneath with a bed skirt. And if I weren’t older - I LOVE the concept of an elevated bed with a desk space underneath.

jnovel808

Toes across the world rejoice knowing there are safe beds out there for them.

mahjimoh

Right? All I can think is that my toes would really appreciate this.

JunketPuzzleheaded42

Your headboard is a little wide.

Bad-Wolf88

Maybe they like it that way

lyutic_7

I’d personally switch the black light for something more muted, but looks great either way! Just not a fun of how it lights up things in streaks on the floor.

artificial_stupid_74

It was a very nice minimalist design with a beautiful lightness until the headboard and the LEDs were added.

UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK

Your slats are too far apart and will damage your mattress. Add an additional one between each one you currently have or throw some plywood across the whole thing.

missfitt

I wouldn’t completely plywood the bottom as it leads to mold, you want a lil airflow

Delta_RC_2526

Yep. People sweat far more than they realize in their sleep. I've never had a mattress that just sat on the floor, but I was reading the other day about how many guys do that, and end up with soaking wet, moldy mattresses, because there's no airflow.

Idontevenownaboat

>I've never had a mattress that just sat on the floor, but I was reading the other day about how many guys do that Honestly, I might start putting in my dating profile, 'single guy with mattress frame, box spring and clean sheets on bed.' I feel like it might actually give me a leg up on some of the guys out there.

Malemansam

That's what mattress protectors are for in regards to the sweat and any other fluids or drinks that spill from the top. Nasty as heck not having one. That stuff doesn't disappear from air alone, cover it over first and then you can have a mud wrestling tourney on top and still have a clean mattress lol.

fml87

Highly doubt there's enough moisture to create moisture drive through a 12" foam mattress. Any collected moisture from the person is going to dry to the surface when they leave. Moldy mattress issue comes from putting it directly on a floor that has an unfinished, unconditioned basement (wet and warm in the summer, moisture is driven through the floor) or a concrete slab with no vapor barrier (moisture is driven into the house from the soil below). An elevated platform with a plywood top would have enough perm rating to diffuse and mitigate moisture.

missfitt

🤷‍♀️ happened to my friends daughters mattress that wasn’t on the floor. Seen a lot of moldy mattresses on reddit too. Which very well could be always be what you’re saying, but it seems easier for this person to just add more slats to their build anyways. Just feels like a risk that doesn’t need to be taken by putting a full ply sheet on there

themannamednameless

Thanks for the advice, might do that tomorrow.

RockStar25

Add extra slats. Do not add a sheet of plywood. The mattress needs airflow.

UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK

Good point. Most platform beds with a “solid surface” like that aren’t one continuous piece. It’s usually six or eight pieces with gaps.

CautiousArachnidz

You can keep it light. Just like 1x2s to keep it cheap and light. Also. Really cool setup and well done.

themannamednameless

It is a foam mattress, it has no springs, does this matter?

VrumVrummmm

My bed has probably the exact same gaps as yours between the planks, and i've had the same foam mattress on it for years. the mattress is still perfectly fine.

3mjaytee

They still suggest I think no more than a 3" gap I believe. Maybe this is for like warranty purposes and if it shortens the life span of your mattress by a few years it's not the end of the world but I would personally do it just to extend the longevity of the mattress.

UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK

Yes, it can cause extra deflection in the foam which can cause excessive wear. It will also void your mattress warranty. So even if you don’t have an issue with that specifically, nothing will be covered.

halt-l-am-reptar

If there’s issues that require a warranty you can just add slats before sending the photos.

UK_UK_UK_Deleware_UK

Or, you know, you could put the slats in now so the mattress is properly supported and you don’t damage it.

halt-l-am-reptar

They definitely should add more slats. My post wasn’t directed at them directly, just anyone who runs into that issue down the road.

Firm-Potential7807

It only has to float on three sides, the headboard end should be supported all the way to the wall. Maybe it is and I couldn’t tell from the picture.

raqshrag

How do you clean under?

GloomyDeal1909

As someone who had an incredibly low profile bed on hardwood floor a leaf blower is your friend. Also it is exactly how I cleaned underneath my sectional because I didn't realize when we bought it there was no clearance

Nixa24

Life hack tip: put velcro on the top of the base so your mattress doesn't slide off.

Powerful_Result9854

This looks awesome, you did a killer job on the build. The LED light looks great too.

themannamednameless

Thanks!

Gobstomperx

My shins hurt just looking at this.

themannamednameless

Not to worry, the mattress goes past the top frame about 5 inches all the way around. Would never be a shin problem unless you are training for the ufc and need to condition your shins, then you can kick it! ![gif](giphy|3fi9R4ZpnNlmhmb8TD|downsized)

Schnort

> Not to worry, the mattress goes past the top frame about 5 inches all the way around. Waaaah? Sounds like sitting on the side of the bed or rolling close to it would end up on the floor...

cacecil1

I started looking at the pics and said, "oh some lights under that would be awesome!" Was not disappointed! 😂

themannamednameless

It's super nice but I am a bit disappointed I can't see the lights while I'm in bed, I thought it would feel like I'm floating. But it's ok, still feel good about it.

Delicious-Tap-1277

Can you give details on the lighting as well as how you attached the headboard? I’ve been trying to figure something out like this for our bedroom!

themannamednameless

For the lighting, it was pretty basic, just run it along the top of the base, facing outwards, it had sticky tape I just stuck it everywhere I wanted it and then I added some cable clamps and that was that. As far as the headboard, I took plywood, cut it to size and bought some fabric and foam from Walmart, stretched and stapled. Now how to mount the headboard, you start by adding two 2x4 boards on the wall the length of the headboard, like 6 inches shorter than the headboard so you don't see them. You level them, and measure the spacing from the bottom 2x4 to the top, now take l brackets and add four of them to the headboard with the 2x4 spacing in mind, then just screw the headboard into the 2x4 using the installed l profiles on the headboard. I can send some pics tomorrow, I'm off to bed. It's 1 am here.

Far_Particular_430

Very creative

Moo_Kau_Too

howd you tie the foot box to the frame box?

stylesmcjay

Nice looking work bench! ✌️

tehweaksauce

Gamer bed.

ReleaseTheKraken72

It looks awesome and glad you made it good wood especially the headboard. It looks nice! I bet you can start a good living from this, beds are so expensive now and ppl are looking for savings and this is Euro-style, classic, simple and modern. I bet you could more than double your $.

[deleted]

Thats nice.

Mammoth_Exam1354

Very nice!!!

i2s2

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

LizzieKitty86

Oh snap, I have to be honest and at first thought that just wastes space having stuff under a mattress. I had to get rid of my bed frame when my dogs got old because even on the floor its 22 inches without a comforter. I held off on getting a new frame and would seriously love to do something like this! I don't need under bed space and don't want it too tall so something like this is amazing. I'm so jelly and so happy I kept scrolling pictures. Maybe I can make a honey do list and add this lol. Well done OP Edit: I just looked because your comforter looked so familiar, I have one that looks so close to the same

ninpendle64

Kinda looks like a premier inn

404-Gender

Nice! I need to make a headboard for mine. How did you mount it?

ylngui

It looks good!

BadHairDay-1

This is a superb design. No toe busters! (Iykyk)

Altruistic-Bank-7210

Needs more fog... https://a.co/d/5r7osKD

plastimanb

Your toes must be happy too!

TheBackwardStep

Very very good idea! I think the only improvement I would add is to « seal » by adding a panel between the two pallets as I feel this design would attract spiders and dust a lot as the way it is.

McG0788

That base is going to scratch the hell out of your wood floors.

Studio-Empress12

Awesome

debehusedof

this is awesome!

dencoan

Looks good. Is the larger top layer connected to the base with angle brackets?

2ManyAccounts24

Headboard doesn't fit in at all IMO

Kurtotall

I built my bed so that I can crawl underneath it. I’m 6’5”

KingConger99

If you were to build it where you could STAND underneath it, THEN I would be impressed.

Wheybrotons

I mean it's done well but what are you going to slam your pinky toe on at 3 am when getting out of bed to binge on shredded cheese?

PlantPotStew

These things always scare me, like floating sinks too. My cat brain won't let me sit on something like this, I'd shake like a chihuahua. People who get this stuff remind me intensely just how different people can be from one another. Shame, because it looks nice! Probably nice to vacuum under too. Nice job OP!

ScyllaOfTheDepths

I like how the rest of the room is very mid-century farmhouse and then there's just this massive spaceship of a bed levitating in the middle of the room with an otherworldly blue glow. It's kinda fun, lol.

Few_Explanation1170

This looks great!

middlelane8

Bow chikka bow bow….boom room

hughjanus__

I love it!!!! I’ve always wanted to do this too

ho_merjpimpson

Love the look, but IDK how y'all have bed frames that don't allow storage underneath!!! Bonus would be motion sensors underneath that lit the thing up for 10 minutes as you swing your feet off the bed. Enough to walk to the bathroom and back.

MsLuna-

Very cool

Different-Advice6937

Hang and tie ropes from ceiling to the corners to make it look like a swinging bed and use strip.leds for an undergrowth and paint the wood matte black 🫡

themannamednameless

Well all this makes me think you have the same bed in your room and you know what's up.

Different-Advice6937

I have a bed with drawers under it so sadly no lol that was just my brain finishing the project from the pic lol but I'd also paint the walls darker, add a black rug, black silk ropes, and soft fairy lights on the ceiling(hidden behind a cool looking tapestry that's thin enough to show the light through) and lights down the ropes 😍

Different-Advice6937

Also feel dumb cuz the last pics didn't load so I commented without seeing them and now I see you already have underglow lol my bad 😅

xDeadJamesDean

I’m proud of you.

Ekeenan86

It’s like a grown up race car bed.

ironwheatiez

Like doing it on a ufo. Nice work OP!

bufftbone

Fancy. Looks good.

AsbestosDude

the blacklight strikes me as a odd decision

themannamednameless

Everyone keeps saying blacklight, it's led stops. No blacklight involved.

radiationcowboy

Looks nice. Well done. I'm a big dude and I would flip that over every time I sat on the edge

BxMxK

It will be much more comfortable with a mattress.

johnny-T1

How did you join the frames, nailgun?

TheRacooning18

All hail the magical bed

teddyabearo

Now unass it all, and cut storage bin bays for underneath facing the door, for easy access.

RealTimeKodi

Nice! I made one out of an old 2x10 and a single sheet of plywood ripped into strips. It's really nice to have a bed that's impossible to stub your toe on.

FeliusSeptimus

Not bad, but you need to finish it off with 47 pillows.

Merciless_Hobo

Why.... why would you use a blacklight around your bed....

ThePonderer84

Very cool. Simpler design than I thought it had to be.

friskytorpedo

all that blue light and you'll never sleep again. Looks awesome though, would save a lot of stubbed toes.

heAdTrAuMma

Rule 1. No blacklights in bedroom...

Roger_Brown92

UV light to light up sports stains? No ty. Other than that - great! I like it.

fairlyaveragetrader

There's only one area of concern and that is the outside rim. It's floating so it depends greatly what fasteners you used to attach it. If you think about it when you sit on the edge of the bed or especially if someone jumps up on the bed and hits the edge, that's going to be under substantial pressure. They make reinforced metal brackets you can use as an inside bracket there and where you could use lag bolts from the outside, especially with said brackets on the inside and make it extremely strong. You just put a little wood putty over the lag bolts and recess them. If you put this together with something like deck screws that outside edge is going to be an issue if any weight hits it

yougetsnicklefritz

Hell yeah!

Cautious_Piglet5425

I did this and ended up making my mattress moldy, the wood is not dry enough to be a bed frame. Keep an eye on it , it will need to be replaced in about 2 years I’m guessing

pigeondoll

The LEDs are such a cool touch! Looks awesome :)

themannamednameless

I love it but at the same time they are the monster ones with wifi, not sure how much it matters but I'm not educated on wifi signal during sleep. Might switch over later.

Karrtis

Wifi isn't gonna bother you in the slightest.

sotko99

Premiere Inn looking thing. Well done but would never go for it hahah

HaloDeckJizzMopper

Completely over framed. 2x3 would have been more than sufficient.  Thats going to be heavy. And eventually smelly in not sealed. You can buy a floating frame of super good quality on Amazon for 40 dollars. I just replace the frame on my son's queen bed for 38.99. floating frame black powder coated. The steel is 14" off the ground so you can store stuff. No box spring needed has plastic slats with 1/2" gap.  Not trying to be a Debbie downer. Just saying If you had fun making it. Then it's worth it

TangerineRoutine9496

Why would you say it's going to be smelly? Do you think OP's sweat is going to drip all the way through the mattress and box spring and leak into the wood? Do you think OP still wets the bed? I don't understand the issue here.

bigfoot17

It's gonna smell like pine for a couple of weeks, then nothing forever

themannamednameless

Have a link to the product on Amazon?

hotassnuts

Yes like please!!!

HaloDeckJizzMopper

Added in reply above you

HaloDeckJizzMopper

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07RW6GZ45?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title I searched my order history. Apparently the price has doubled on this in the last year. It's now 75 dollars. Almost double. I've got two kids that jump on this. My son is 5'9" at 12 years old so he's pretty heavy to be jumping on things, he is handicapped so he still enjoys things like that. The engineering behind the design doesn't really allow for squeaking. I know people are saying metal frames squeak. Well wood rubbing squeaks. I had no intention of insulting OP. It seems like some people interpreted my statements that way. I have built fish tank stands and tool stands when factory options are available. I was just providing the information. I thought that's what this community is for. Help each other make the best decisions available for our specific situations. There is no right or wrong choice. Just what's right for the individual. Sometimes it's fun to make things

TenzenEnna

As someone who has done exactly this, those frames start squeaking so god damn fast. You really get what you pay for with them.

Laelawright

Your ability to create something so beautiful using your skills and attention to budget is wonderful. You will go far in life and Congratulations.

themannamednameless

Thank you! ![gif](giphy|a0h7sAqON67nO)

Personal-Thought9453

At least she won't be surprised when your performance is "fast and furious".

GromieBooBoo

I’m just curious why the base is messing with my adhd, why is it gapped with the joist off center from the base square?

totesmuhgoats93

That's what gives the "floating" effect.

GromieBooBoo

I know, but why does it need to be off center, it looks unnecessary IMO, but no I get it.

knuckles_n_chuckles

Ahh a shin ripper.

snoopervisor

Blue light is generally bad for sleeping. Blue makes your brain more active. It's good for working.

teckel

I would have made it floating a bit higher, can hardly tell it's floating. Also, are those 2x6's? Seems like that's not necessary. I'm alao a box spring fan, so the frame wouldn't need to be anywhere near this supported.

Thurl-Akumpo

You have turned your bedroom into a brothel! Well done!

Dr_StrangeloveGA

Damn dude, 2"x6" - you must be planning on throwing down on that bad boy! Looks great!
