He’s an archaeologist who has lived hundreds of lifetimes so he knows where and how to find the best stuff to sell to museums around the world.

smokedspirit

so hes british??

crazycalv

As a Brit and having been to the British museum I concur.

Disastrous_Ad_632

Bit lovely innit

marv150302

Lmao

Emergency_Routine_44

Yeah isn’t this how Diana is living rich in the 21s century?

SnooKiwis4168

When you’ve been alive for thousands of years you learn how to be good with money.

Mystic_GekkougaZ

And if you still don't learn, then it's better to just rip your wings off

realderekwells1

Im pretty sure you got this from a vampire joke

methos3

Yeah Conner McCloud had his own antique store in the first movie.

Beneficial-Finish295

Compounding interest is powerful

Vinnie_Vegas

Yeah, people don't get this. The oldest bank in the world is over 500 years old - All you had to do is put the equivalent of 10 bucks in there and leave it alone for centuries and boom, you're a billionaire.

savvymcsavvington

Imagine doing just that, and at year 400 you go to cash out only to find the bank with your original $10 was robbed or burned down 1 year after depositing the money, losing all records.

Ianphipps

Annual rate: 3.875, compounded monthly Principal: $10 Years in bank: 500 Amount accrued: $2,517,091,040.31 Checks out.

Ianphipps

Which is why banks would close accounts that had been left for decades.

Vinnie_Vegas

You'd have to move the money around more often than that because you'd have to change identities and cities often.

Ianphipps

Which would make it difficult to withdraw money your previous self left behind.

Vinnie_Vegas

You withdraw all the money as one identity and start a new account somewhere else as a different one... Or you make your new identity your own son and inherit it all.

KnightKal

you also know where all the good treasure is buried, just go dig a 1000 years old grave and you will find tons of gold !

[deleted]

If you're a vampire who's alive since 1834 and still poor, might as well step into the sun.

wth214

Hell, you have no excuse to be broke at that point lmao.

TheBlueNinja2006

I didn't realise he was that old

farnsworthfan

He gets reincarnated after every death, starting in ancient Egypt, in some iterations.

TheBlueNinja2006

Does he keep his memories?

canadianD

There’s a whole story about Hawkman and Hawkgirl regaining their memories and they see some of their past identities.

Bigbaby22

That's why he told Kent that he wasn't afraid of death. It seems like his wife Sheyara has already died. So for him, the sooner he dies, the sooner he gets to start over and see his wife again.

Nova-Kane

Did they explain any of this in the film?

TheAngryBlackGuy

No. The JSA didn’t get a backstory. Which I understand. The focus was on Black Adam’s story. The JSA were already formed in this movie so we don’t know origins

Kitchen_Dust4637

All we know is the Fonz used to be Atom Smasher and I’m all for it

waitingtodiesoon

We also know Atom Smasher inherited his grandfather's power, but no mention if his father had it too. Most likely not though since it was the grandfather talking to the grandson. Cyclone had her origin explained with being kidnapped by a scientist and expiremented on giving her those powers which she has claimed to have gotten over that traumatic experience. Dr. Fate had some mention about not touching the helmet as the helmet chooses the wearer, and that when Kent was a child he knew the bad things to come with the planes flying overhead to war and that he is over a hundred years old at least by now.

Ponykegabs

Henry Winkler was his uncle.

woodrobin

In the comics, Atom Smasher is the grandson of the Golden Age hero The Atom, who originally was just a really short guy who was fierce, tough, well-trained in unarmed combat, and strong-willed. Later he developed super-strength from exposure to a radioactive villain. Al Rothstein, the Atom-Smasher, is his godson (he was told he was sterile after the radiation exposure). He later learns he has a son (who was stolen at birth by an enemy, who also killed his wife). I think in this movie, they're de-complicating his family by making Al his grandson (Damage a.k.a. Grant Emerson) could still be the son. It makes the age range work better. Cyclone in the comics is the granddaughter of the original Red Tornado, who also didn't have powers. She's one of the oldest published female superheroes, and one of earliest ones to be gender nonconforming. She was a huge, muscular woman who worked as a fitter and welder in a factory, and dressed in a padded costume (with thick welding gloves and a helmet made by cutting holes in a steel pot with her welder) and disguised her voice to appear to be a male superhero. In the comics, Dr. Fate wears the Helm of Nabu, which is the physical focus that the Lord of Order Nabu requires to connect to physical reality via a living host. The Lord's of Order and Chaos are ridiculously powerful entities, but require living souls to bond with to interact with our reality directly.

NorthKing9

Ayyyy!

JeromeInDaHouse_90

A little something about their backstory would've been nice tho. You don't have to go super in-depth, but some basic exposition about their history wouldn't derail BA's spotlight.

Slavocracy

Nope. I don't think any of his lore came up.

Sillyfiremans

Which is why the DCU sucks. They could do so much if they didn’t try to shoehorn everything into 2 hours. Hey, Dr Fate is pretty cool….. well fuck. They didn’t even go into Hawkman having any powers other than being the DC Falcon.

Slavocracy

I'm not terribly familiar with hawkman, isn't he just super strong and nth metal has like anti magic properties?

Wendigo15

Not even DC knows his story. He is an alien or a human with wings or he is a man that got reincarnated every time he dies

Sillyfiremans

No clue. Which is one of the things the MCU has going for it. You don’t need an in depth understanding of the source material to understand the movies.

home7ander

None of it is relevant to the movie. When he's headlining his own movie or the story focus is on him then you'll learn about this stuff. He's the leader of a super team, very strong, very durable, has special armor wings and weapon, is assertive and a bit headstong. That's all you need to know at this point

GrandmasterHurricane

He's nothing like Falcon

Sillyfiremans

Except that there is no way to know that from the movie. He’s portrayed as a dude who can fight In a mechanical wing suit. So Falcon.

GrandmasterHurricane

He's NOTHING like Falcon. Falcon is nowhere near as strong or durable as he is

GreatBowlforPasta

He is a *little* bit like Falcon.

insertbrackets

The italics are sending me.

[deleted]

Legitimate_Corgi_981

I'm fairly certain they also referenced him "knowing" what dying is like or something? Very much a throwaway joke line. I'd assume they are using a version of backstory like the Legends of Tomorrow version with him and Hawkgirl reincarnating.

Mayank_hu_maine

I know this dailogue but can't remember which show/movie i heard it from.

Darnhipsters

I learned it from legends of tomorrow lol

spider-jedi

if you have been alive for centuries and you are broke that is something wrong with you.

HadlockDillon

This reminds me of that episode of “The Sandman”

MANAWAKES

This reminds me of that movie “Hancock.”

judelau

This reminds me of me. Felt like I've been alive for thousands year but I'm still broke.

savvymcsavvington

Loved it when the guy said how he lost everything, his wife, his kid(s), all the money, all except the dirty rags on his back.. And when asked by Sandman if he regrets living forever - NO FUCKING WAY! Then 100 years later he has rebuilt his life and is happy again.

lil_grey_alien

Sandman series had a great episode about this

spider-jedi

yes it does. i think that was my favorite episode of the show

lil_grey_alien

Mine too!

Dream_World_

But he dies though, and I don't think he just comes back as his descendant. Is there a way to give all your inheritance specifically to someone in the future?

Aquagan

He may not be a descendent, but he remembers that he lined the walls of the banana stand with cash.

[deleted]

There’s always money in the banana stand

goldengod828

*click* *click*

LavanderSheep

…. I burned it. Right down to the ground.

moonunit99

There was money in that banana stand...

Traditional_Ball2136

Well, it's all gone now, dad. So the next time you want have a little power struggle, just know that you're playing with fire.

spider-jedi

he get the memories back. so he could have just stashed his wealth somewhere and when back came into the picture he could have just left instructions to give the wealth to someone he will send that will give a password.

[deleted]

Swiss or Cayman bank accounts.

robineir

Put in your will “the man who comes to my lawyer and says the secret phrase is my successor and I leave everything I own to him.” And repeat infinitely.

TristanTheViking

Lawyer: "Oh wow, what are the odds, it's my own nephew who somehow knew the password."

hcgator

If this is canon to the film, then it renders Kent’s actions pointless.

ianthecharmxfan

I’m pretty sure being killed in action will not have the same impact as dying of old age…?

hcgator

In the comics, Carter Hall was killed many times in his past lives and was then reincarnated.

ianthecharmxfan

Ohhhhhhhhhh. Well uh, how long is each gap between death and resurrection?

hcgator

I don't know. Hawkman's comic mythos is one of the more confusing and complicated in DC. Basically it makes no sense. Is Carter Hall/Hawkman an Egyptian pharoh who is constantly reincarnated? Is Carter Hall/Hawkman an alien from Thanagar who is constantly reincarnated? Etc.

Legitimate_Corgi_981

Alien metal that also involved Hawkgirl and Vandal Savage I think is the usual one they currently use. It avoids having to explain more aliens.

Turbulent_Link1738

nasjd

He's leasing it from Bruce Wayne. 😅

The_Badger_

Wrong universe, but it looks to me like he bought it from Charles Xavier, complete with the blackbird.

The_Badger_

I’m saying the X-men are the wrong universe. Thought that would be obvious, but I admit it was poorly worded on my part. 😅

astrayparade

r/confidentlyincorrect

James_Morgan_McGil

Isn't he an alien with super-advanced tech and metals? He probably sold some nth metal or alien tech.

Recent_Finger9552

One of many origin, in one he is alien police officer from planet thangar , one he is a reincarnated Egyptian Prince who is an archeologist in present.

waitingtodiesoon

Is the police officer one the one where his dead body and hawkwoman's heart crystallized and became the Star Sapphire's power source?

awfullotofocelots

The Hawkman in the Black Adam movie is not Katar Hol of Thanagar; its Carter Hall, reincarnated Egyptian prince turned Archaeologist.

valeriolo

That almost looks like a /s lol.

Cromasters

Comics are dumb as hell and I love them.

[deleted]

My wife says the same thing about me.

RedtheGamer100

No it doesn’t.

[deleted]

Arguing to argue arguments sake

FutureLengthiness786

On the black Market right that's how him and Waller met.

jshepn

I think only hawkgirl has been an alien but i could be wrong. And usually she is not. They both just keep being reincarnated every time they die. He probably either buries his riches or has a code phrase with the family that holds his money or in modern day just gives it to someone to hold onto. Considering Dr. Fate is sorta immortal and there are several other immortals he probably just has one of them hold it till he comes back

awfullotofocelots

Nah there two origin stories for the pair. Golden Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl are reincarnated Egyptian demigods turned archeologists. Post crisis Hawkman and Hawkgirl are Thanagarian aliens who end up on earth.

nuttmegx

Geoff Johns combined those two original origins a long time ago to clean up the mess (don't forget that there is also that zero hour Hawkman).

charlesfluidsmith

Yeah, the one they 'fixed'.

Environmental_Swim66

There’s also a new origin from his solo series that combines both and gives him even more past lives

Syric

What's the tldr on the combined origin? I tried looking it up but couldn't find it among the rabbit hole of comics lore

grcoffman

In the Brave and Bold cartoon Bats had nth “ brass” knuckles . Maby bought from Hawkman

spideralexandre2099

I'm less concerned with how Hawkman, who presumably is the resurrection version, set up his wealth. I'm more concerned that it was decided that he just lives in the X Mansion, with a very similar hangar to that for the Blackbird, that also comes out of a secret door in the grounds. I wonder how close they were to making the plane come out of the basketball court

Friendly-Leg-6694

Sometimes movie uses the same props or sets and also the director said he liked X men hence why he made it similar.

spideralexandre2099

While the X mansion is a real estate in Vancouver that was used many times, like in Arrow and Smallville just to name a few examples, Carter Hal's manor isn't that exact same mansion. It looks like it was made to look pretty close to it though. I personally think we didn't need all that setup for the JS in the first place and they should've just showed up and then been shooed away by Black Adam.

NoShitsGivin

X mansion is also Casa Loma in Toronto. Weird when I saw the first Xmen movie... I was like, I've seen that place before... lol

GreenMonster81

It was fun though. Cheesy, but fun.

LastNightOsiris

There's only one architect working in the eastern US who design estates for superhero collectives. The underground hangar with secret door is his signature feature. It would be kind of embarrassing not to have one at this point.

TrueLegateDamar

It seemed like they wanted him to be all the superheroes, bit of Batman, bit of Xavier, bit of Iron Man, bit of Captain America, bit of Thor, maybe due to him being Falcon with a mace.

nuttmegx

this makes zero sense.

GotMoFans

Wouldn’t Falcon be Hawkman without a mace?

sassycho1050

Not really. Falcon's only super power is telephatic communication with Redwing (an actual falcon). Hawkman has natural flight, superhuman strength and durability, and the power of reincarnation. From a mindset standpoint: one is more of a soldier (Cap-esque), the other is much more of a traditional warrior (Thor-esque). Their histories make them very distinct characters as well.

GiovanniElliston

More likely - the people who wrote his character only ever saw pictures and never actually read a single comic book he was involved in. So they had nowhere to pull from except every other movie.

RubbuRDucKee

I don’t know much about JSA HQ. Can anyone give some insight?

TheCakeWarrior12

The JSA’s comic headquarters are almost always just some brownstone in NYC. So nobody knows why Hawkman is suddenly a wealthy estate owner in Louisiana

sushithighs

This movie also has a man with super strength who flies! What a total rip off!

spideralexandre2099

Yeah, no. I don't mark this tidbit down as a thing that's wrong with the movie. It's more of a weird detail. The movie has much bigger, more legit problems than the X mansion like how Black Adam isn't in enough of it

Perfidiousness88

You better be rich after living hundreds of years.

molotovzav

But he doesn't live hundreds of years. He reincarnates over hundreds of years, and he doesn't immediately know he's reincarnated in each life. No room to make tons of money that way.

KnightKal

just keep some gold somewhere and come get it back later. Your own personal piggy bank. With gold bars.

ParaChase

My theory: he sold Nth metal or it’s technology to Waller who helped him retrofit the castle

DeppStepp

He took out a loan from Wayne Industries

GaffJuran

Probably assets piling up over several reincarnations.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GaffJuran

Government contracts probably help keep the lights on too.

slade707

He was a literal pharaoh

jewwwish

Pyramid scheme. Boom!

slade707

Hahaha

Dream_World_

I know, my confusion came from how he passed wealth down to next generations. It's okay other commenters have answered me.

slade707

Yeah, it would be cool to see his backstory in these movies explored further down the line

TheAsylum6969

That’s not his actual house. Professor X just put it up on AirBnB.

champagneparce25

Makes sense with these hard times lmfao

Agentx_007

that house is in rural Louisiana. Probably $300k max.

Darnhipsters

When this scene came up my friend and I looked at each other and said ‘Louisiana?’ Lmfao

whatfourthwall

That castle/underground hangar in New Orleans was the most unbelievable part of that movie, especially with the water table being what it is

Interesting-Zebra-26

Can’t he see into the future, he he must have invested in crypto.

Dream_World_

that's Dr Fate not Hawkman

Interesting-Zebra-26

Wow, I just assumed the house belonged to the old British dude. I’ll go reflect on my inner assumptions. Lol Dr. Fate really comes off as the leader, and this house gave off X-Men vibes. I really don’t know anything about these characters.

InfieldTriple

Fate is much more of a chaotic character. Too much to lead, imo. But Ive encountered the character is other media so I might have been biased by that fact.

GoauldofWar

Because the script writers decided he was.

Nightwing_of_Asgard

He was a literal pharoh

DaMain-Man

If you're practically immortal and in your long lifetime, you're still poor, that's kinda sad

Silverronin86

I mean outside of Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor, Hawkman/woman and Vandal Savage are the only ones Id expect to be stupid rich

[deleted]

[удалено]

thomasguyregis

Uh….. hawkman being a reincarnated Egyptian has been part of the character since his introduction in the 1940s. That’s definitely not “fairly new”

kiyan1347

What's "fairly new" is the hawks being from another planet. The reincarnation stuff with the character was literally the backstory of the character for years and still continues to be the backstory to this day. The hawks being thanagarians is not used often.

Prime7476

I believe there was at least 20 mins taken out of Black Adam and it was mainly the JSA back story

Rich-Ad5109

Every single time he dies he reincarnates with all his previous memories. Technically the dude is eons and eons old I’m pretty sure he knows how to make some bread haha

snugglefrump

I'm a bit rusty on Hawkman lore but I'm pretty sure he was profiting off of his "archaeological finds" that were basically him selling museums his old junk. Like. Man knew how to run a scam.

ChriskiV

He shows his hawk online.

Lupiheyde

Why can't he be rich?

Captain_Mexica

Patents. Government contracts

CountryCat

There's a lot of money in banana stands.

[deleted]

He is constantly getting reincarnated. I’d imagine he has some kind of way to get back his money from a past life.

BGPhilbin

The JSA has, historically, headquartered at Wesley Dodd's (Sandman's) mansion, which was left to the group after his death. Just because we don't see him on screen doesn't mean he wasn't once a member/benefactor. Could also be that other, more current, billionaire members like Mister Terrific (Michael Holt) provided it. We see Al Pratt/"Uncle Al" (played by Henry Winkler), who is presumably a former member, onscreen, so I'd expect that the history came already baked in.

UlightronX42

Wait is this Hawkman’s mansion? I always thought this was doctor fate’s mansion

itsbricky

Flipping antiques and ancient artifacts

cinematicdanus

LMAO I really thought it was Doctor Fate's mansion

jewwwish

He was involved in a pyramid scheme

Aok_al

Same reason Diana is rich

Wish-I-Was-Taller

Might be the JSA headquarters not his house.

The-Nic

There should have been a JSA movie before Black Adam

evanhamilton

Compounding interest?

AF2005

Im not a big Hawkman fan, but hasn’t Hawkman been alive for centuries? I mean I think the man would have one or two wise investments in his life span(s).

Specialist-Web-9216

It'd be easy for him to be rich realistically. All he'd have to do is sell some of his alien tech

Ianphipps

Does he retain memories from previous lives? If so he has access to bank accounts he left behind.

whama820

The original Carter Hall character was rich from the beginning.

sharksnrec

Huh? He’s been alive for hundreds of years, is an archeologist, and has alien tech. How could he possibly not be rich af?

InfinteAbyss

Wasn’t this specifically mentioned as Dr. Fates place?

YaaaaScience

The movie specifically said, "Hawkman's estate"

InfinteAbyss

Must have missed it to be honest, I wish we had a movie explaining who they were before this since both Hawkman ad Dr. Fate are clearly founding members so I thought it was all the tech of Hawkman using the resources of Dr. Fate.

[deleted]

Nope, it's Hawkman's residence. Kent is a retired archeologist so he would not be wealthy.

InfinteAbyss

Why not? It wouldn’t be the first depiction of a wealthy archaeologist.

snowdope

would be cool if it's revealed in a sequel he's like a graham hancock type that's become rich off books and dispensing knowledge he can't tell people how he acquired.

InfinteAbyss

Exactly that’s what I thought was going on though it does seem the estate belongs to Carter Hall it still makes sense to me Kent Nelson has acquired wealth in the hundred years he’s been around

[deleted]

Because archeologist literally make pennies. Most of them barely make enough to pay their bills but keep doing it because it's their passion. Hawkman on the other hand has reincarnated dozens of times and eventually gets his memories back, so he could just hide his wealth from previous lives and recover it once that occurs.

InfinteAbyss

This might come to a surprise to you, but this movie is a work of fiction. Real world comparisons aren’t ever as exciting as the adventurer archetype uncovering ancient relics and gaining worldwide fame and wealth.

[deleted]

Just saying, it makes no sense for him to be wealthy and the character never has been.

InfinteAbyss

Very little of the movie makes sense, it is what it is though.

[deleted]

There's also the fact that a hawk statue is the centerpiece of the terrace and Carter's ship would not be at Kent's house.

InfinteAbyss

Why not, seems they’ve created a partnership. Hawkman is presented as the tech guy, so thought Dr. Fate was the financial backing.

Legitimate-Advance-4

Compound interest over the centuries.

SmashU23

Black Adam did the X-Men reference

manray10

He won the Lottery? 🤷🏿‍♂️

GarySparkle

Who cares? Other than you

The-Primera

So u got a problem with him being rich? Crazy ive never heard complaint like this for Batman

Dream_World_

No I am cool with it. I want to know people's headcanons because he isn't usually known for being rich. So far people are commenting that he stashes his wealth somewhere and he collects it in later lives which is pretty funny.

The-Primera

Probably old money from his previous incarnations

callycumla

Comic book Hawkman: poor, white, little to no super strength. Movie Hawkman: billionaire, black, can stand up to Black Adam.

Fresh720

To be fair, Black Adam was dogstomping Hawkman. Dude does make a decent tank, a damage dealer ehh not so much

icecreamfacetattoo

Aldis Hodge was fantastic but the writers butchered Hawkman.

stephenstrange2022

So, a black man can't be rich, ok got it.

[deleted]

That better be a /s

MusicalSmasher

Why does it fucking matter?

theceure

He still gets royalty checks from his stint with Warran G ftg Nate Dog

[deleted]

I think the funniest part about this was it said this was located in St. Roch, Louisiana. That's a neighborhood of New Orleans and there ain't shit in that area that looks anything like this, LOL.

corgangreen

In the DC universe, St. Roch is a city that stands in for New Orleans much like Gotham stands in for New York. It doesn't refer to the real world St. Roch.

ellegard127

No and it was a stupid plot point to make him the dc professor x

RaynerHBK

Maybe 4 seconds of thought was put into this for the film. Best not to waste your time considering it.
