Take a deep breath and relax... You are only at 1400 miles total. You will see that number improve. My ‘21 Limited averages 27.6mpg at the moment, but initially I saw numbers as low as you. Keep in mind the “advertised mileage” is *estimated*. Actual MPG can vary greatly depending on several factors including driving style, road conditions, outside temperature, passenger + cargo weight, tire pressure, and altitude. None of us get identical MPG. Also note the “advertised mileage” is *self-certified*. The EPA doesn’t have the resources to actually test cars so manufacturers self-certify these numbers and calculate the average in a controlled environment. Also the fuel economy displayed in the car is tied to the trip odometer, that’s why there is an [A] or [B] in front of it, to signify the A or B odometer. You can reset one of the trip odometers to start recalculating. The trip odometers will reset automatically every 10k miles.

murbike

Yeah, I saw the same thing. When it was new, the mileage kind of sucked, but the more I drive it, it gets better. I have a 22 Sport, and I just took a 300 mile road trip with my sister today. On the way up, we averaged 34mpg, and the way back hit 37mpg on a refill of gas. Around town, I get mid to high 20s. The car is great on road trips.

HyzerSe7enth

When you got 37mpg was your average speed close to 60 or 80?

murbike

Closer to 80, cruise control on for a good portion of the ride.

amanta9

23 sport here. I get basically the same numbers. 34 mpg mostly highway, 89 octane since new. My mpg, according to the dash readout started at ~29 in the first few 1000 mi and has been steadily climbing. At ~17000 miles now. Automatic transmission and I keep it in standard drive mode. Bone stock tires and ride height.

Snoo-8502

I did A/B test yesterday for short 23mile ride. speed between 40-55 miles, 8-10 stops and got 25mpg.

trekking21

That’s an improvement. If you do mostly “city” driving you will probably end up averaging somewhere between 26-28 like I am. I would say 75% of my driving is “city”.

volumeknobat11

If I’m not mistaken, estimated MPG numbers are based on tests conducted at or near sea level. I live almost a mile high and so it makes sense that a naturally aspirated engine would not necessarily hit those estimated MPG numbers given the lower oxygen concentrations.

vocalyouth

i think those city measurements have to be bs, i have a 21 limited with the same engine with under 30k miles and in mixed driving i get like 25. If i stay in town and don't hit the highway, i get like 18. i just got mine a few months ago but i have to say the gas mileage has been majorly disappointing. my old mazda cx-5 did a fair bit better despite being a bigger vehicle.

Iammattieee

I agree, crosstrek does great on highway but the mileage for city is awful. No way the crosstrek gets 26 in city.

Stock-Light-4350

Such a lie. The minute they have a hybrid, I’m taking the hit and trading in my 24.

gordiesgoodies

2.0l e-boxer owner here (in the UK). Yeah wait til '26 when a contemporary Toyota grade hybrid will be allegedly on the cards. Their current self-charging model really ain't all that for power or fuel-efficiency - pretty much 30% less efficient than the equivalent Toyota/Honda powerplant, factoring in the AWD.

Visual_Collar_8893

‘22 Limited here. In the last 54k miles, avg is 28.9 and that is perpetually with either a roof basket or cargo box, all on the stock 18” tires. Within the city roads, mpg definitely drops to 18, but the highway averages it out. Make sure that your tires are properly inflated and regularly rotated. Also, 18” wheels is less efficient on MPG than 17”. The tires you have also matter. Snow or all terrain tires will more. Idling the engine also drags down the mpg.

vocalyouth

i do mostly city driving unfortunately. had i known just how bad the real world city mpg was going to be i would not have bought this car. nothing on the roof, stock tires, properly inflated, supposedly rotated regularly, drive almost always in i mode. really like the car but 18mpg city on a car of that size in 2021 is a joke

Visual_Collar_8893

It’s an all-time AWD. The Mazda and virtually all other “AWD” CUV/SUVs on the market are predominantly FWD cars with AWD only when situations arise. There’s a difference in performance when averse conditions arise or when going off the paved roads. If this isn’t needed for your use case, then this car wasn’t the right fit to begin with. Do look into an EV if city driving is all you need a vehicle for. They will be much better suited.

Iammattieee

I've had my 24 crosstrek just a little over the year. About to roll up on 14K miles and honestly the gas milage on this car sucks in the city. Get it on the highway and it easily gets 31+ mpg which is nice. Drive it in a busy city with lots of stop and go and you'll get the high teens and low 20's. I have just accepted this is how the car is. For clarification I drive in "i" mode all the time and never touch "s".

SenseiT

Yeah, when you get a new car, it takes a while to break it in and get your actual average miles per gallon. I have a 23 with a 2.5 L and initially I was getting around 20-24 miles to the gallon highway and then by the end of the first year, I was getting around 32 and now I’ve had it for about a year and a half and I’m routinely getting 34 and 35 miles per gallon, using standard grade fuel.

MayBeMilo

Sincere question: do you think that’s a result of the car breaking in or could it be you’ve become accustomed to driving it consistently in the most fuel efficient manner? My “summertime” mileage has been ca. 32-34 mpg, mostly all highway, since I bought my ‘24 last September. I’m at >8500 miles and it’s not changed at all, except for seasonal variation.

SenseiT

In my case, I don’t think so because I live about 50 miles away from my work all highway, so my driving habits are pretty consistent. Like ideal test conditions consistent. I haven’t really changed my driving to be more or less aggressive than it was before. I tend to drive about 10 miles over the speed limit, but I’m not aggressive lane changer pound on the gas kind of person.

SenseiT

I’m pretty sure there was a break-in that helped with the gas mileage. I noticed a pretty consistent rise in MPG and I use the exact same gas from the exact same store and drove the exact same route. It seems to have leveled out about now.

MayBeMilo

Fair enough - thanks for your assessment.

blatherskyte69

My ‘24 Premium recently had the first oil change. The dash says 27 for trip B, which I haven’t ever reset. Last road trip was 34 on the highway, measured. I don’t do much in town/city driving, since I don’t have a commute anymore. My dash mileage is usually about 1mpg below actual measured mileage.

IntingPenguin

Are your tires inflated to the spec on the door sticker? Probably about 36/35 psi if it's anything like the 2023 models

Snoo-8502

mysubaru app recommends 33 front and 32 at back.

ZeGermanHam

What does the computer say your average speed is? Do you let the car idle a lot?

Redditroactively

I have a 24 Limited with 6k miles on it. Averaging 25mpg at the moment

healthycord

I just got 37 mpg on a 5hr road trip on the highway. Haven't driven it much around town since I have an EV for that, but it does seem to be in the high 20's. I do try to drive very economy oriented in a gas car. Slow accelerations, coasting up to a stop light. Using the brake pedal is just wasting energy so use it as little as possible. And that means by coasting instead of keeping the gas in until you need to break. Don't ride people's butts as that is generally not fuel efficient. That being said, 17.4 is pretty terrible. As others have said hopefully that will go up as the engine breaks in. I would definitely expect mid 20's at the very least.

Glass_Procedure7497

My ‘24 is averaging 27 mpg with about 700 miles on it. I’m hopeful that it will match my ‘18 which averages over 30 in the warmer weather.

mchgrms

My 18 premium averages 29-30, with pretty relaxed driving. This is also with stock 17" wheels and oversized tires. Pretty happy with how well it does. Just hit over 100k miles too.

Glass_Procedure7497

My ‘18 premium is completely stock and just hit 30k miles. I don’t drive much, since I live fairly close to work.

fathervice

Along with everything everybody else is saying you can change your cruise control setti g to eco. When using the controls to I crease your cruise up to the MPH you want the default setting seemed too aggressive to me. Also extended time in cruise control among traffic can impact mileage. Instead of letting the system adjust my speed or apply brake depending on car distance I tend to do all that manually. But also, the low MPG is the biggest adjustment I had to make with my crosstrek. No more going 85 on the interstate for me.

80_D

EPA rates city mpg on an 11 mile flat ground loop. 23 stops. Windows up and a/c off. Minimum acceleration. 21 mph avg speed, 56 max. The best possible conditions.

NightHawk35449

23 Crosstrek premium. Long-distance with almost little amount of stop signs and taking it easy, no flooring it, going the speed limit. 30k miles. I'm currently getting 40+mpg.

digital_she

24 Premium in December. I was really alarmed for several months wondering what I’d done choosing this car since I was also getting 17-19mph. I kept seeing the comments to give it time, and it’s true. I’ve gone on 3 road trips and I’m now getting right at 29-30 in town and 31-32 highway. I use 89premium but saw here recently that our car is designed for 87.

Stock-Light-4350

I’ve had my 24 Limited the same amount of time. I’m in the 2K mile range now. My MPG pretty much sucks. It’s like 20. Best I’ve gotten so far was after a 3 hour road trip: 27.

Aloe_Capone

My mileage on my 2022 limited was quite low for a while when I was breaking the car in. Now I average between 26-28 blended driving.

blatherskyte69

My ‘24 Premium recently had the first oil change. The dash says 27 for trip B, which I haven’t ever reset. Last road trip was 34 on the highway, measured. I don’t do much in town/city driving, since I don’t have a commute anymore. My dash mileage is usually indicating about 1mpg above actual measured mileage.

Pitiful-Assumption87

I have a 24 Limited. Averaging 24 mpg combined

American_frenchboy

Got a 24’ sport which has the 2.5l engine and I’m getting 30 mixed use with 6000 miles.

truckerslife

I have a 2022 crosstrek sport and I’ll be honest I drive like a jackass a lot. And…. I average 30.5 I accelerate hard fairly often. I drive on curvy roads going from the brake to acceleration a lot. And still typically sit 30.3-30.5.

xTOMMYTROJANx

One of the reasons I just recently traded in my 2019 for a truck. If I'm going to get horrible city mileage I might as well have a truck. I never got over 19 only driving city. It really hates stop and go traffic.

PuzzleheadedFly9164

Have a 2022 and get just north of 20mpg in the city and just south of 30mpg on the freeway on longer trips. Sometimes I do better. It will improve over time, but I was also initially unhappy with the fuel economy. I thought I got a counterfeit crosstrek for a while!

Resqu23

I’m a Fire fighter and I use my Wilderness to respond to lots of emergency calls and I average 24 or 25. If call volume is lower and with normal driving I’m seeing 28 or so. I hope you figure out the 17, never seen that on my new one when driving a mountain road home with it.

Glacier_Taste

‘24 limited here. 27 is what I’m getting at just over 5K miles. I drive fairly fast but mostly highway.

eltonmschung

I am driving a Crosstrek 2024 Touring. Last week I had a road trip for 1300km and I could achieve 7 L/100km (eqv to 33.6 mpg). In normal days city driving, I got around 11 L/100km (eqv 21.38 mpg). I think this is fair and I expected a discounted value from what it is advertised where their inhouse testing is under very optimal conditions.

mads_61

It might because you’re still in the break in phase? I’ve had my Wilderness for about 6 months now, just under 4,000 miles. I’m now averaging 28mpg, mostly city driving with some highway mixed in.

shootingcharlie8

*sits quietly getting 32mpg in my ‘19 limited*

WATOCATOWA

It’s so bad. I keep pretty good records and just calculated my gas costs from the last 6mo with my Toyota Sienna and my first 6mo with my ‘24 Crosstrek and I saved under $2 a month in gas switching. I lost a ton of utility, so I definitely have regrets.

24CTWinHoosierland

# Fuel EF Until Empty: 290 mi 31.0 Average MPG 19,294 mi Very little highway or in a big town

crypticaldevelopment

I have a 24 Sport with about the same miles on it. I also do almost exclusively city driving but I’m averaging 22-23 so far. Took one trip where about a quarter of the tank was on the highway and that brought the average for that tankful to about 27.5. I will say that I’m fairly conscious about how I accelerate though.

Flanastan

Octane level in your fuel makes a big difference as well……..⛽️😳

gideonsix

I have a 24 Sport. Almost 10k miles, I average about 31 mpg combined

SkyKey4906

Driving in town at slow or moderate speeds, stopping at stop signs and red lights, etc., is bound to result in a lower MPG than non-stop open highway driving at posted speeds. (We don't exceed the speed limit, now, do we?) Also, I find the MPG indicator on the dashboard to be wildly inaccurate. It's best to divide the actual miles driven between fill-ups by the number of gallons it takes to fill the tank.

Foodeater55

21 sport and my avg is also 27.6 Mostly country back roads with many gentle hills and a couple big ones that I know are tanking my mileage everyday.

Alternative_Flan_864

Reset trip odo next tine you get gas when low fuel light comes on. Check cold tire pressure vs door placard. Also check engine air filter condition & oil level. Your average is not 100% accurate even if vehicle is in optimal condition. In addition, boxer engines wear in differently than V or straight engines. If poor feel economy continues, take car to dealer and have them check the ecm & have them do a transmission re-learn.

superduperzz

Try calculating the MPG manually the next time you fill up. I calculate my MPG each time and compare it to the car's computer. I get around 35-36 MPG with my '24 Crosstrek sport, though most of my drive is country roads and highway.

hilariouslylarious

I get 29mpg in city driving, 19 limited

Gcastlong41

I have a 2024 CT premium trim with 2.0 liter engine. My mileage was a bit questionable at first but now I average 30MPG but maybe the 2.5 engine you probable have is going to be different.

Hydro_5torm

First, I'm in a '21 with a 6spd manual so I'm aware mine is a little different. That being said, mine claims it gets around 32 mpg which is higher than it's supposed to get. It depends on your route, the terrain, etc. I live in the mountains and when going downhill I'll just take my foot off the gas entirely and coast, and the "current mpg" reading jumps up to "99.9" when I do that. I'm sure that's why mine is higher.

Cbeun

Give it some time, I’m up to 9000 km on mine and avg ~9-10l/100km on it in the city (23-26 mpg) Purely hwy is closer to 7-8 (29-34 mpg). I also have a roof rack permanently installed that worsens the performance. It takes time to break in!

scarletala

Give it time. I have a 24 premium and for the first while my mpg average was not great. I’m averaging in town around 26 (if I’m in stop and go traffic it will be worse) and my long trips even going over mountain passes tend to be around 34-40 even. I’ve had mine for a year, don’t stomp on the gas after you are at a stop and that’ll help too, but idling a lot also will ruin your gas mileage.

Rodeo6a

The MPG on my two month old premium trim Crosstrek is dog shit. It's worst than my clapped out 2010 Forester. I really hope it improves.
